There's a pretty cool subscription insert by the Honolulu Advertiser with this structural theme:

In Hawaii, $1 can you (the daily Honolulu Advertiser) or...

almost half a can of Spam
Less than half a gallon of gas
Half of a single-scoop ice cream cone

What else can you suggest your dollar has in buying power here in the Aloha State? Be analytical (sarcasm is a plus!). ;)

:D

Things that can brought for $1 or less:

A 12 ounce can of soda.
The Monday to Saturday edition of the Honolulu Advertiser or the Honolulu Star Bulletin.
40 minutes of dryer time in my building.
A spring roll at U Choice In.

A 12 ounce can of soda..I heard Mountain Dew is gonna' begin charging a $2-dollar-per-can "high demand" fee on their product. :p Good ones Helen!

Well, you can throw the Marukai "99 Cent Store" out the window. Now most of their plastic, kill-our-environment, made-in-China, headed-for-the-landfill inventory will set you back $1.49.

Taco Bell still has their 99-cent value meal menu last time I checked. Hook me up with 3 crunchy tacos and I'm good. Oh wait..now that's $3.00. Ouch. lol

McDonalds has a $1.00 menu with lotsa choices. I find it a bit funny that the McDs in Waikiki (Discovery Bay...the most expensive McDs in Hawaii, I heard) doesn't post that menu in the store. But, when asked, they comply! Oh, and for those 55+...60¢ "senior" drinks! Burger King has the same drink deal. JitBox's senior soft drink is 85¢ but it's larger than the other 2 places.

What can one buy with only a dollar?

Someone already mentioned the best bargain of the year, a dollar ticket to any island on Go! Airlines, minus all the taxes and fees associated with airline travel. That offer expired long ago, but was good while it lasted.

For 99¢ and from the comfort of you own home, you can buy many MP3 downloadable songs from Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/).... and they don't charge for GET like Apple does at iTunes. Plus some of Amazon's MP3 songs sell for 89¢ each. And all MP3 files are DRM free! :)

You can get 2 tacos for 99¢ at Jack in the Box. I also like the taco offer at Taco Bell that someone already mentioned.

From McDonald's dollar menu you can get a double cheeseburger for $1, 2 Apple pies for $1.

You can rent a DVD from the Hawaii Public Library for $1 for a whole week.
Better yet, you can borrow books and CDs from the Hawaii Public Library system for free during a 3-week period. :)

Admission to most public state and county parks are FREE. The entry fee for walking into Diamond Head crater is $1 per person; drive your car in and you get wacked for $5.

Movies at Restaurant Row Theaters are $1. :)

Well...this thread isn't about having only one dollar left...it's about what $1.00 can buy in Hawaii regardless of how many one dollars you have! Just think, if one has a million bucks, one can buy a million side salads or almost 1,666,669 senior coffees from McDonalds! :D

With tax make that $1,047,120.

With tax make that $1,047,120.You are absolutely right Tutusue. Formulate the buying power of a dollar in Hawaii ANY WAY you feel makes it's more powerful to YOU! :D

Look at it this way: $1 in Hawaii (well, Oahu, anyway) will (hopefully) pay for 1/500,000th's of a home in Ewa Beach, to which $1 will also pay for perhaps about 1/3rd of a gallon in gasoline that you'll need to drive into town for work. So if your car gets (generously) 27 miles-per-gallon, that dollar will take you approximately 9 miles; less wear-and-tear and insurance expense make that 7.

Not bad. Good deal! lol

A 1.5 litre bottle (the biggest one) of water at ABC store in Waikiki is still just 99 cents. That's a damned good deal. Try buy that same bottle of water at a convenience store in Maui. There it'll set you back at least $3.00+. Maui ouwee.

So you see. $1 is different, depending which island of Hawaii you're on. Poor Kauai. :p

I have to mention that the last time I was in Honolulu, assorted bags of Shirakiku brand arare (sakura being my fav) were available at Don Quijote for 99 cents; 89 cents on sale. Also remember a small variety store in Chinatown on Nuuanu Avenue that had various bags of crackseed for a $1 a bag. I could really use a bag of sakura right now...my last bag of them (among the many that were sent from home in a care package) were consumed about a month ago.
