For those of you who are interested in A.O. Scott's comment to Richard Roeper, I think this (http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/ebertandroeper/index2.html?sec=1&subsec=5524) is a link. You have to sit through a commercial first, which I find annoying, since Ebert frequently talks about disliking commercials in movie theaters, but I guess one pays admission for movies in theaters, and we're not paying for the content at Ebert & Roeper, so...whatever.

Oops. I just noticed that's not A.O. Scott! Um...sorry! :) Nobody got it anyway!

Oooo....ya messed uuuuuup....

For that and in honor of turkey day and family feasting you have to answer this question (anyone else can play too if they want)

What cult films do these hints refer to?

1. "Gooble Gobble, gooble gobble......"

2. The drum sticks have such a kick to em it makes ya want to go live in the radiator! Or not....

3. Sometimes a good slice of meatloaf just hits the spot.

Oh, no. I'm good, thank you.

Some things came out at dinner tonight, after it was assumed that the witching hour had passed. Certain answers that I know for a fact are "money," were discussed, leaving the Goatly One shocked and amazed, and just a little perturbed!

I, on the other hand, had a jolly old time!

Happy Thanksgiving to all, and to all, a good night!

I was kind of, sort of, hoping for a break from the torrid trivia action over the weekend. I'm leaving tomorrow for Hong Kong, and as such, due to the extreme length of the flight, will be out of communication for quite some time. I'm going to have to figure out when the trivia answers are due while I'm in HK. If I've done my math correctly, I think I have until 4PM the next day from the time they are due in to Scrivener in Honolulu.

HawaiiThreads Trivia Contest!
Here are the answers for Day 19!

Category: Spicy Meatball Plop Plop
Each weird phrase below is two advertising catch-phrases stuck together, with the word that joins them removed! For 1/4 of a point each, identify the word that's missing and identify the companies, services, or products that are being hyped. In some cases, phrases might have been shortened in order that they might make sense, but the wording (and the order of the words) remains as it was made famous. You must get the missing word and both products/companies for the quarter point. Nothing for a partial answer!

Army Enough for a Man
Army STRONG Enough for a Man
U.S. Army; Secret Antiperspirant

It's the Only Way to the Friendly Skies
It's the Only Way to FLY the Friendly Skies
Western Airlines; United Airlines

Finger Lickin' to the Last Drop
Finger Lickin' GOOD to the Last Drop
KFC; Maxwell House

Let's Make Things Sound Through Research
Let's Make Things BETTER Sound Through Research
Phillips; Bose

Because You're Worth Takes a Licking
Because You're Worth IT Takes a Licking (and keeps on ticking)
L'Oreal; Timex

Life's Times Begin at _________.
Life's GOOD Times Begin at (the Fun Factory)
LG; The Fun Factory

According to the question, you get a fourth of a point for each item if you correctly identify the missing word AND the products or companies that are being hyped. Nobody got all six for the maximum of 1.5 points!

These people got 5 for 1.25 points: kiwidiva, liberty, Leo Lakio, InfinityProductions, Peshkwe, tutusue, Surfingfarmboy, Kalei99, and acousticlady!

Getting four right for 1 point: zztype! He is the only one who got the Fun Factory one, but he misidentified one of the airlines and the coffee! Ooooh...that seems like it could have been easily Googleable, no?

Getting three right for .75: helen.

Getting two right for .5: mel.

What comes immediately after "My name is Cinderella / I live across the street?"
"I wash and dry the dishes / for fifteen cents a week!"

This is part of a patty-cake rhyme I could only find evidence of in one place on the web, and it was a local forum. As with most folklore, there are variances "based on location and coinage," says Peshkwe, but I could tell if you knew it or not.

One point each to Mike_Lowery, liberty, zztype, Leo Lakio, InfinityProductions, Peshkwe, Surfingfarmboy, and Kalei99!

No points, but props for tutusue's answer: "And if you wanna meet me / You'd better kiss my feet!"

Category: And Everyone Will Love You Just as Long
In each of the music-related images below, something is missing.
For one point, what one word describes the theme of the missing parts?
For another point, what is each a picture of (be specific!)?

Here are the "answers" to the first three images:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2303/2058473019_4c773c5f88_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2119/2058473271_920ff2ef71.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2168/2058473177_54d272e4f1.jpg

In order, it's Motley Crue's pentagram (the star was removed), Paul Stanley of KISS (whose star makeup was missing), and a common Rush image, used on shirts and tour programs, with the star removed.

To be continued in the next post!

scrivener
November 23rd, 2007, 09:37 PM
Here are the other three images, corrected:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2140/2058473217_4e2e7d3938.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2114/2059258738_0b4acfa658_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2101/2058473305_484bd89b8d.jpg

In order, they are Arsenio Hall and his house band (missing Starr Parodi), the constellation Lyra (missing one of the stars), and the music of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" with the note for "star" missing!

Peshkwe and Kalei99 both made the Arsenio / Star connection by remembering that Arsenio was the host of Star Search (Peshkwe said that what was missing was Arsenio Hall from show business!). At first, I wasn't going to count this, but then I remembered that all you had to do was identify the photos, not say exactly what was missing. Kalei99 almost lost a point there!

According to the question, you get one point for identifying the one word that serves as the theme for the missing items; I'm hoping it's plain to you that the word is STAR!

Correctly identifying that word and earning one point are liberty, zztype, Leo Lakio, Kalei99, and acousticlady!

You got an additional point if you correctly identified all six of the images, as did zztype, Leo Lakio, and Kalei99!

-----

There were mulitple entries by lots of you, including THREE from Kalei99 (who finally got that RUSH one on her last try, but never corrected the Arsenio answer) and I think FOUR from zztype!

Here are the current standings, with appeals still pending!
52: Kalei99
44.75: Leo Lakio
41.75: liberty
40.75: Surfingfarmboy
40.25: zztype

32.5: lavagal

And that image question, Scriv. Gimmeeabreeeeeaaaaak!!! Kalei musta cheated! :DI figured the last one had a local connection, too, so we called the AF's parents, but they couldn't get it. I took a wild guess and said "Good Times Begin at Times Supermarkets." That was the only one that stumped me.

I thought the "star" link of those six images was one of the most clever questions Scrivener has posted; I started to recognize what was missing from about three or four of them, and when I made the connection, the rest just fell into place. The fact that they were all music-related was just a bonus.This is part of a patty-cake rhyme I could only find evidence of in one place on the web, and it was a local forum.Was it this one (http://forums.hawaiimoms.com/viewtopic.php?t=884)?

Ya know what? Folgers was my first guess, too, even after years of working on those commercials. But that was the 1960s-early 1970s and I knew better than to trust my memory. Thank goodness! ;) The brains cells finally allowed the voice of "Mrs. Olsen" to surface, complete with Swedish accent for "It's mountain grown..."!!!

The TV spokeswoman for Folger's Coffee, made by Procter & Gamble. Introduced in 1963, Mrs. Olson (Virginia Christine), was a Swedish woman who seemed to know all the young couples in town whose husband's never asked for a second cup of coffee.

DingDingDing!!! And, yes, very googleable!

Funny factoid (altho' my mother wasn't the least bit amused!)...my dad directed all of the Mrs. Olsen/Folgers commercials from that campaign's inception 'til he retired in the mid 1970s. Pop and Virginia were flown from LA to NY to shoot one round of spots. They sat together on the flight. As they walked off the plane a flight attendant acknowledged Virginia and asked for an autograph. Then she looked at my dad, held out her hand and said, "Nice to meet you, Mr. Christine."!!! My poor mom took to her grave her anger over the FA's innocent remark. I doubt it fazed Fritz at all!

'Nother funny factoid...I went into false labor on the set of a Folger's commercial. :eek:

I have a :30 mentality! :D

Here are the answers for Day 20!

Category: Node Out
Piers Anthony's (so far) thirty-one-novel series takes place in a magical land. To what does this magical land bear an uncanny geographical resemblance?
The state of Florida. Like many fantasy series, the Xanth series includes maps of the lands in which they are set (a convention begun by the inventor of the genre, J.R.R. Tolkien). It's hilarious to open a Xanth novel and see the state of Florida.

Category: A Pool of Inebriation
What comic-strip character spends his time getting drunk, participating in soccer matches (and their resulting fights), and engaging in the occasional game of snooker?
That would be Andy Capp. As a kid, I ever really got the humor much, but I am interested in checking it out now, to see if I'd appreciate it better. Did you know that Capp stopped smoking a few years ago and also stopped beating his wife?

Category: Tempe-rarily Down
In an episode of Seinfeld, George's father announces that he feels reborn, comparing himself to something rising from Arizona. What is the something?
The something is a phoenix, as in, "I feel reborn! I'm like a phoenix rising from Arizona!" Check out the audio clip submitted by zztype here (http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Studio/5280/frank.htm).

These people got all three: liberty, Peshkwe, Mike_Lowery, CranBeree, Kalei99, Leo Lakio, zztype, tutusue, InfinityProductions, and lavagal!

Category: Icy Dead People
For fifty-five years, a School Street destination known by its owners' initials kept us cool on hot days. By what name is it known today?
First, I want to apologize for that idiotic category title. I was being silly. And nobody complained about it or anything, but I look at it now and think it was in poor taste -- the Higas aren't even dead!

Okay, so I was referring to the former B&S Store, which zztype says is his favorite shave ice on the island (mine is Ice Garden in Aiea, with Baldwin's in Waimalu second). It's now called Shimazu store, and while the store itself has absolutely NONE of the character of the old B&S--remember the autographed shave-ice cones?--the shave ice is even better than it was. You can get it in small, large, bowl, and "the Larry." I had the bowl, and my mouth hasn't been happier in ages.

Extra azuki for liberty, Peshkwe, zztype, Leo Lakio, Kalei99, lavagal, tutusue, and kanahina for getting that one right!

zztype sends a link to a relevant journal entry (http://www.hawaiistories.com/eric/2006/06/20/aloha-bs-store/) by HT's Eric.

Driving to the coast, the sun warmed my arms and legs as I anticipated my dinner with Julia Roberts.

How should this sentence be rewritten for grammatical correctness?
First, here is what's wrong. The subject of this sentence is THE SUN. The action performed by the subject is "WARMED." You can boil the entire sentence down to those two parts: The sun warmed. Everything else only adds details. That first part, "Driving to the coast" is a detail that modifies part of the sentence. What is it modifying? Well, we like to put our modifiers close to what they modify: In this case, the sentence is saying that THE SUN, while driving to the coast, warmed my arms and legs...

The sun does not drive. To the coast or to anywhere else.

A more obvious error of the same type is "Melted and sticky, I forgot about the chocolate bar in my pocket." "Melted and sticky" is supposed to add details about the chocolate bar, but because of where it is in the sentence, it's actually describing "I." I suppose I could be melted and sticky, but that's clearly not what is meant in this sentence!

The most popular fix for the sentence was "While I drove to the coast, I anticipated my dinner with Julia Roberts as the sun warmed my arms and legs." Anything like that was fine, but if you moved a modifier to another place where it STILL described the wrong thing, you didn't get credit. An example: "I anticipated my dinner with Julia Roberts as the sun warmed my arms and legs driving to the coast." I suppose "my arms and legs" really are driving to the coast, but that's not at all what the sentence intends to say!

Shame on lavagal, a professional writer, for using "as" twice! Sure, it's grammatically correct, but come on! liberty had a comma she didn't need, but the case could be made for it where she put it, and it was grammatically still correct.

By the way, that error is called a dangling modifier. It's not important to know that; it's more important that you understand that it is one example of a modifier that is misplaced within the sentence.

Eraser-clapping duty (because that's a privilege) for Mike_Lowery, liberty, zztype, Leo Lakio, Kalei99, lavagal, and acousticlady for not leaving their participles dangling!

Dakota Fanning, Julie Hagerty, Kristin Chenowith (rowr!), Sara Gilbert, Bonnie Hunt, Mary Kay Place, and Lee Remick have all played characters in films or on TV with what first name?
They all played characters named FERN.

If you haven't seen Dakota Fanning in the most recent version of Charlotte's Web, you really must. It's very, very good. When I heard there was going to be a remake, my first thought was, "Who the HECK could possibly voice Templeton, after Paul Lynde did such an unforgettable job?" Then I found out it was Steve Buscemi, and I thought, "Perfect!" And he was. Julia Roberts was also wonderful as Charlotte. First time I've ever wanted to make love to a spider. The real show-stealer is Beau Bridges as the doctor Fern's mother consults. He brought me to tears twice!

:D

I have to say that I'm glad someone here in HK told me about the web site www.timeanddate.com. According to that web site's calculations I have until 3 PM next day from Honolulu, in order to get my picks into Mitchell at the 9 PM Honolulu deadline. A far cry from the time you suggested! ;) Not that it really matters for me at the moment, seeing I'm well off the pace set by leaders!

Hindsight being 20/20, I admit, at least at the moment, I would trade the remaining time on this journey for a trip home to the Windward Side in a heartbeat. I guess I'm suffering culture shock at the moment. I'm going to reserve my judgement on HK until my two weeks plus have been completely spent here. I have this feeling that by the time I'm ready to return to the USA, I will probably end up falling in love with HK. Just like every other place I now really love but said I didn't like when I first arrived.

What Newbery Medal recipient tells the story of a boy forced to leave school at the age of ten who, through his own thirst for knowledge, educates himself and becomes one of America's most honored navigators?
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham. The cover is awful and the title even worse, but this is a surprisingly good read in the vein of Johnny Tremain. I really dug it and I wasn't planning on it!

Just for your information, the Medal goes to the book, not the author. Yes, the author gets the prize, but it is for writing the BOOK, which is the actual recipient. That's splitting hairs, I know, but I've been working on getting all of these read (29 of 86 left!) for my thesis, and I'm particular. You got credit for just giving the author's name, anyway.

There are twelve days of Christmas
Or so says the carol
But twelve days of trivia
Traversed at your peril

The past twelve nights (or days,
If that’s when you do ‘em)
You’ve sometimes scored big
And sometimes said, “Screw ‘im!”

Which wasn’t very nice
If you’ll permit me to say
Still, when the stakes are this low
I guess it’s okay…

But back to the subject:
Tonight’s trivia question
Has been hidden there in
Your nightly obsession.

Twelve consecutive clues
All the ones, twos, or threes—
A puzzle within the contest
Like a crust filled with cheese!

Is it all the twos? All the threes?
Could it be all all the ones?
Don’t mix ‘em and match ‘em
‘Cause that wouldn’t be fun;

Your task is to choose ‘em
Sort them all in your mind
Put ‘em all together
And hopefully find

That twelve days of questions
Can answer one more:
In what one place have you seen
All of these things before?

Perhaps you’ll be calling
For my instant removal
Perhaps you will gain
My seal of approval—

Either way there are two
Points ready for claiming
Or one if you’re close
To the sought-after naming!

So get yourself on it—
Good luck, goats and swine!
Your answers are due
Wednesday by nine!

It sounds, from the tone of that last question, like this is the end of the contest, but it's not. That's how it came out because I had to make stuff rhyme! We have about a week more...30 days or 31 days in all.

Okie dokie. Let's see who is right . . . and who is dead!

zztype was kind enough to collect the relevant clues and include them in his answer, so for those who didn't get it, here are the last twelve answers to the #3 questions:

blue, white, and red
rising sun
"Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono."
the shield
pulo'ulo'u, or "kapu sticks,"
Lady Liberty, or Columbia
Kamehameha I
star
phoenix
fern
taro
1959

In what one place have you seen
All of these things before?

There was quite a variety of answers here, so allow me to share a few of the wrong ones!

mel's answer kept with the sorta Christmasy theme: "Bah, humbug!"
helen: "google.com"
Peshkwe: "Of the last 12 sets of questions, the third question's answer has been referred to in some way on HawaiiThreads."

Surfingfarmboy: "The only common thread I'm finding among the what I suspect are the clues/answers you have in mind is: Oahu. That's my answer. Now I'm out the door and headed to catch the ferry to Macau."

lavagal: "It's all I can do to neglect my family long enough to answer three questions, so I'll have to sit this one out. I'm intrigued. I'm eager to see the results."

acousticlady: "I normally love this kind of thing - but it's late and it's been a long day. If I suddenly get it before 2 am (you know, wake up in the middle of the night with a eureka! moment....) I'll get it in. Otherwise - I'll have to say uhhh.... embedded song lyrics in the edits!"

[I LOVE this answer...makes me wish I'd thought of that!]

Hopefully, whether you answered correctly or not, you're now envisioning what zztype, Kalei99, Mike_Lowery, and Leo Lakio saw:

The best answer ever ever ever is from Kalei99:

The 12 Days of Trivia
has really blown my mind
I searched and I scoured
only to find

a bunch of crazy words
and some non-sense, too
I put them all together
and came up with the zoo??

I looked at the clues
and I have to confess
I thought to myself
Scriv's really made a mess!

I knew zoo was wrong
in my gut I could feel
The only correct answer
is the Hawaii State Seal!

I also admired the wit of Mike_Lowery's answer, which didn't hit me until hours after I first read it:

"I think the question is 'Where can you find a phoenix, 1959, Kamehameha I, ua mau ke ea i ka aina i ka pono, taro, ferns, and michael chiklis?'"

Which is super-funny, because a lot of people (including him, I think!) got the "shield" question wrong when they submitted "Michael Chiklis" as their answer. :)

Two points to each of the brave four.

OK, here's my (our) story of working this one out...

I have been very busy this week, trying to squeeze in as many home projects as I can in my final week before starting a new job (yes, I DID have six months to get these things done - of course, I put many of them off until the last possible week - so sue me; you know you do the same thing.)

I thought a lot of the same things that others did - was it the song lyrics that Scriv used in his edit lines? Was it an anagram of the first letters of the first questions, spelling out something clever? Was it just his use of the phrase "...Good luck, and beat Kalei?"

So I printed out the question and the clues from the past 12 days, then put them aside until I knew I could study them late last evening. But first, the AF starts looking at them (mind you, it's now one hour and fifteen minutes until the deadline.) She eventually says: "You know, I'll bet the key is in the answers to one of the questions, and I think it's #3 - something about film, or music, maybe."

At forty-five minutes to deadline, I start reading her the answers to question three --- "blue, white and red" ... "rising sun" ... and she says, "flags?" As I continue reading the clues, some of which fit that idea (such as "shield" and "Lady Liberty"), I remind her of this line:In what one place have you seen
All of these things before?So she suggests the Hawai`i State Capitol building. Once I get to clues like "taro" and "1959," I'm ready to start Googling pages about the State Capitol, or the State Flag, when I re-read the most important clue in the poem:Perhaps you will gain
My seal of approval—DING! DING! DING! I search out an image of the Hawai`i State Seal, and even find a page (http://www.hawaiischoolreports.com/symbols/seal.htm) that lists most of the answers from the past 12 days.

35 minutes to deadline, and in goes the response. I don't know if I could have done it without the suggestions from the AF, so she shares the credit for this one (as well as doubling the applause for Scrivener - and also wondering how much time this is taking away from his Master's degree project.) Yet another reminder why she and I are together - between the two of us is one functioning brain.

Mahalo, Scrivener - well-planned and nicely presented. I had a feeling Blaine would get it, but wasn't sure about who else would have the time and inclination to tackle it. Regarding Kalei's poetic reply, the AF asks "Dang that goat lady! Wot, is she going for extra credit with da poem?" Unless she vanishes mysteriously (not wishing that, mind you) AND I don't miss any more questions, I fear she's got a lock on the lead.

Man, I need those two pending appeals to go in my favor, in order to slip away from Blaine - no rest for me yet. (Randy, how do you find stamina to go the distance, especially in the home stretch?)

I didn't know there was such a thing as a transparent png.Also from Wikipedia:
PNG offers a variety of transparency options. With truecolor and greyscale images either a single pixel value can be declared as transparent or an alpha channel can be added. For paletted images, alpha values can be added to palette entries. The number of such values stored may be less than the total number of palette entries, in which case the remaining entries are considered fully opaque.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is an open source solution to display transparent PNGs in IE, Firefox, and Safari without the use of filters, PHP, or complicated Javascript and CSS – PNGPong. The solution uses a combination of Javascript, Flash, and simple DHTML.Look here (http://apps.everamber.com/alpha/).
Go ahead, Leo, and explain your deepest thoughts here in this thread. Take all the time you need. (Hi Lovely Lori! Mahalo for helping!)
You should put your answers in riddles, too! That would look cool! (And take HOURS to get just right!)
Me? I went down the list, copied all the 12 days' answers to one document, minus the questions and commentary. Then I looked at them.
There were some that obviously could not be related in any way. Instant elimination. By the third answer, I had settled on No. 3 as the target.
Each set of answers, I looked at No. 3. It started looking like "Pearl Harbor" (Dec. 7 coming up), with mention of "Arizona" in the Phoenix answer, "Rising Sun," "taro," (Aiea and Pearl City taro farms), "star," and "red, white, blue," looking like some military (Navy) reference.
But some of the answers didn't fit that idea. Then I saw "1959" and "poloulou," "Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka Aina I Ka Pono," and immediately settled on the Great Seal of the State of Hawaii.
All in all, I spent about 15 minutes copying all the answers to one document and about 5 minutes to figure out the answer and to submit it to Scriv.
Blaine
P.S., Drop your challenges and compete like a MAN! I have dropped all mine and will play confidently based on my talent and knowledge. I won't rely on bullying the proctor to raise my grade!
Like I said, I figured you'd get it, with your knowledge base and experience in working with major Hawaiian institutions. Twas a bit more twisty for this Mainlander, neither born nor raised nor ever resident in the state of Hawai`i, to suss out. I suspect more people could have figured it out if it had been in a simpler form - but that Scrivener's creative presentation scared off a few participants, thinking it was just too complex to decode. (A good play, that.)
Having worked at the Hawaii State Capital when I was in High School, I saw the seal all the time. I used to think it was so "podagee" because it contained so much "stuff" on it! :D I think it's pretty, now.
Here are the questions for Day 26!
Category: Anything He Wants!
What does a Boy Scout do with steel wool, cotton, and a six-volt battery?
Start a fire, of course! Forget everything you've heard about sticks or about flint and steel. The best way to get a fire started quickly and with no matches is with this method. I've started cooking fires with these (and other, much more dangerous!) methods and the battery/steelwool/cotton method is the best. Once you get the hang of it, you have a wonderful fire in just minutes.
Someday, remind me to tell the Pine-Sol and chlorine story. :)
These people are excused from KP this week for getting that one right: zztype, helen, Kalei99, Leo Lakio, Surfingfarmboy, Peshkwe, liberty, acousticlady, lavagal, Mike_Lowery, tutusue, mel, and InfinityProductions.
Category: "I am NOT drinking any *&^%^%$ Merlot!"
What does it mean when wine is aged on its lees?
Of course yeast is used in the fermentation process. As the yeast eats the sugars, it creates two products: alcohol and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is cast off as a by-product (except in sparkling wines, where it is trapped in the wine in order to give it that fizz), and the alcohol stays there in the fermenter. The trouble is that yeast die when the alcohol levels reach about 15%. Then the dead yeast cells sink to the bottom. When almost all of the cells have died, the fermentation process is mostly complete, so the wine is then "racked" (or siphoned) off the dead cells into a new container. Those dead cells (which are mixed with other solid pieces of the grapes, such as bits of skin, seeds, stems, or whatever) are called "lees." That's why the alcohol percentages in bottles of wine tend to be between 10% and 15%.
"But wait," you say. "Brandy, madeira, marsala, port, and sherry are all much more alcoholic than that!" True, but the way they get it that way is by adding more alcohol to the wine after it's been racked. These are called "fortified" wines. That's why you like them so much!
Sometimes wine is aged on its lees in order to introduce yeasty flavors. I like those flavors. Do you know I'm a novice winemaker? I've been making wines at home for about seven years. I've done a few batches on their lees and...well, let's just say I've got a lot more learning to do!
A toast to zztype, Kalei99, Leo Lakio, Surfingfarmboy, Peshkwe, liberty, acousticlady, lavagal, Mike_Lowery, tutusue, mel, InfinityProductions, and CranBeree for getting that right! Actually a couple of you defined the term by giving its French equivalent, but from a linguistic point of view, you did answer the question and I must therefore award the point! But you're getting the dregs, and you know who you are!
Category: "Waipahu Must Be Empty Tonight!"
Waipahu's historic Plantation District, whose soul was Waipahu Depot Road for the longest time, is mostly just a memory now, but what neighbor of the Arakawa's store is still in business, run by the sons of its founder sixty years after its founding?
*sigh*
This is what I get for trying to keep the answers as difficult to Google as possible. These people got credit for these answers, but stick around for a little explanation!
zztype said Waipahu Bicycle.
Leo Lakio, Kalei99, acousticlady, Mike_Lowery, tutusue, and InfinityProductions said Ishiharaya, a cookie and candy manufacturer.
Surfingfarmboy, liberty, lavagal, and tutusue (yes she gave more than one answer -- again!) said Highway Inn.
mel and CranBeree said Rocky's Coffee Shop.
Not getting a point was Peshkwe, whose "the buggers next door" was at least good for a laugh!
The problem was this: There are a few businesses in the area that are still around for going on fifty-plus years (or more!). The other problem was this: "neighbor" is not a very clear term. If a business is located in the same town, as is Highway Inn, is it a neighbor? A wise man once said that your neighbor is anyone who needs your help! That could be anyone! Mr. Rogers called EVERYONE neighbor.
Really, though. Highway Inn is really quite far from where Arakawa's used to be, don't you think? And I did say the business in question was still run by the SONS of the founder, and I did say SIXTY years after its founding! That knocks a few MORE of the (albeit physically proximal) Arakawa's "neighbors" off the list. But perhaps all you TOWNIES wouldn't know about that!
So you all got the points. But I'm rewording the question and offering it again tonight, since NOBODY GOT THE ANSWER I WAS LOOKING FOR!
Here are the scores!
I guess the thing is Highway Inn used to be right next to Arakawa's on Waipahu Depot Street... so with your explanation, you're looking for a business that is still in that area. Gotcha. Also, the founder's son owns the business and his other son cooks (http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/stories/2005/05/09/focus1.html?page=2), but I guess a cook isn't someone who "runs" a business... although he's responsible for the taste of the food! :D Trying again right now!
You add "in bed" to the end of the fortune. Try it! It is hilarious. There are variants, such as adding "in my pants," but those lack the elegance of a simple "in bed." I think B&O Railroad is probably going to have to count, so if you only got half, stick around and see what unfolds!Hope so --- the B&O Railroad never went to Atlantic City.The Water Works is located in Ventnor, NJ...According to the "Monopoly" entry in Wikipedia: The actual "Electric Company" and "Water Works" serving the city are respectively Atlantic City Electric Company (a subsidiary of Pepco Holdings) and the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority.Further research shows it located at 401 North Virginia Ave, Atlantic City, New Jersey.
But was it located there when the original Monopoly game was released? Just curious! ;)Not that the question is phrased in present tense: What two properties in the game are actually located in other nearby towns and in what towns are they located?
Yes - I am a stickler for these kinds of details, as is the man in charge of the game...and I need every point I can get, with Blaine trying to get past me (and I doubt I can do anything about Kalei at this point.) Whee!!!
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain in Seattle!
If he gets this appeal, then I want an extra point for my complete answer.
Original question: The original game of monopoly is based on streets, utilities and railroads that are (mostly) located in Atlantic City, NJ. What two properties in the game are actually located in other nearby towns and in what towns are they located?
OOPS!* Not all of the properties in Monopoly are in Atlantic City!* Marvin Gardens is a misspelling of a housing area outside of Atlantic City, Marven Gardens.* The name of the area probably comes from a combination of Margate and Ventnor, two cities outside of Atlantic City.* The mistake stood until 1995, when Parker Brothers sent a formal apology to the folks of Marven Gardens.
OOPS #2!* Atlantic City does not have a Water Works!* Water is actually piped in from the mainland (Atlantic City is on Absecon Island) through two pipes.
And as far as the railroads go, the B&O Railroad did not serve Atlantic City.* The four railroads that served Atlantic City in the 1930s were the Jersey Central, the Seashore Lines, the Reading Railroad, and the Pennsylvania Railroad.* The Short Line railroad probably refers to the Shore Fast Line streetcars that served Atlantic City.
And yes, I can cite my sources.
Moi??? Not little ol' me! Really! I had to research like the rest of you! However, it did cross my mind that I'd better get this one right! I found the actual commercial and it didn't ring a bell at all. BTW, I have tapes of vintage commercials! :p
Hope so --- the B&O Railroad never went to Atlantic City.According to the "Monopoly" entry in Wikipedia: Further research shows it located at 401 North Virginia Ave, Atlantic City, New Jersey.
You know, I saw that too. My info is from family lore. The water works in Atlantic City came along later - or so I was told by my father and grandmother and neighbors. When I was real little, we lived across the street from the entrance to Marven Gardens and later, after I was married, I lived around the block from the Water Works. It was a pretty big deal to still have the original water works still in operation. So..... why does Wikipedia have a different answer? 1) I could be wrong..... or 2) Wikipedia is wrong. Just one little statement in my defense, we don't allow students to use Wikipedia as a reference in research papers because all the info is independently contributed and not verified....... But I fully accept that I could be wrong in this. And yes, you are correct in that the B & O never went to AC.
My info is from family lore...we don't allow students to use Wikipedia as a reference in research papersFamily lore is probably more reliable anyway.
I've recently been hearing some "experts" claim that, due to the amount of contributors these days, making more corrections and updates than ever before, Wikipedia is being considered more and more reliable all the time - the bigger the sample, the better the results - sorta thing.
But I would love to see the reactions of you Island folks to this snow. I suspect it would be something along the lines of staying inside (where it's NOT 36 degrees), and commenting on how pretty it is to see as it comes down.
Which is what folks around here ought to be doing, too. Naturally, we have tickets to an event tonight, so we're heading out (but we'll take the bus or walk.) Maybe I can find some time tomorrow to post some of the AF's pictures to the photo thread. (Anyone know how to post a movie - and not on YouTube? AF made a brief one when the flurries were at their heaviest.)
Jeez - I better finish up my trivia submission for tonight, before we head out...
Category: Volcano Whoa!
Here is another participant-submitted question!
A one-minute television commerical, with a distinctively Hawaiian theme, aired in the US (c.1967) that showed characters playing the roles of kanaka maoli throwing rice and brown sugar cane sugar (sic) into an active volcano. Moments later, these ingredients are transformed into an edible product that is explosively erupted from the volcano's caldera. What product did this commercial advertise?
Kellogg's Puffa Puffa Rice (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60585948@N00/2048790184/). I've never heard of this stuff, but enough of you did to earn Surfingfarmboy one point for submitting this interesting question! Spoons up for Mike_Lowery, zztype, Kalei99, Surfingfarmboy, Leo Lakio, mel, Peshkwe, acousticlady, InfinityProductions, tutusue, liberty, and lavagal! Surfingfarmboy thought the "younger" people playing the game (I won't repeat the names he offered) would have trouble with it, but everyone on his list got it right!
Also, Kalei99 says it was her favorite, and mel says he didn't like it much because it got soggy too soon after milk was poured upon it.
The cheesy-sounding commercials are on YouTube, if anyone wants to check that out.
What Honolulu restaurant has an enormous tree growing right through it?
I'm editing this to add that this is not al fresco dining...it's an indoor restaurant, and there is a huge tree growing right through it. In case anyone wanted to call one of the hotel lanais a restaurant or something.
I'm going to ask this one again, with better details. No points for this one, and I'm not saying who was right or wrong!
Category: "Waipahu Must Be Empty Tonight!"
What did Frank De Lima yell when a tire came off his car and rolled away?
"What? Loose wheel! You goin' leave me now?"
Man, I thought that joke was HILARIOUS when I was in sixth grade or whenever I heard it first.
Save a table at the Noodle Shop for zztype, Kalei99, Leo Lakio, and kanahina!
acousticlady says, "I don't know what he said but I had a blast looking for it. Found an old HT thread on local humor. I was in tears I laughed so hard. Spent too much time reading through the jokes!"
tutusue's answer was, "Dammit, I'm too young to retire!"
Someone wanted to know why the category title was the same two days in a row. Heehee. The first time I used it was in honor of Waipahu and something Frank says when he does the go-into-the-audience-and-ask-talk-to-people thing. When he's spoken to a few Filipinos in a row, he says, "Waipahu must be empty tonight!" That's too good a line not to use twice.
What a WEAK category title. Sheesh. Good thing this contest is winding down! The correct answer is, of course, the Hawaii Islanders. Since I just about always have at least one Hawaii-related question per day, and the other two really aren't very Hawaii-related, you could have gotten a hint just from the assortment here. S&S Saimin (my favorite thing at Islander games) for Mike_Lowery, Peshkwe, zztype, Kalei99, liberty, Surfingfarmboy, tutusue, acousticlady, InfinityProductions, and Leo Lakio!
http://mitchellkdwyer.net/stuff/reeses.jpg
I think this was tough to Google if you typed it in the way it appears on the cardboard tray that comes with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Only liberty, tutusue, and Leo Lakio got that right.
tutusue says, "Dunno whether that answer is right but I always lick the wrapper when the chocolate has melted!" Ooooh. Um, wow. Is it, uh, getting hot in here?
mel also sent me a YouTube video of...well, I can only imagine right now, because I can't look at YouTube where I happen to be right now. :)
Category: The Long and Short of It
What unit of measure is equal to five feet, seven inches?
That would be a Smoot. Easily Googleable, but if you have some time, read about other M.I.T. "hacks." You will laugh so hard you'll have to pee, I swear. mel says that five feet, seven inches is also HIS height, so I say that from now on in Hawaii, that measurement will be known as a "mel." How many mels is it from one end of the Hilo Humming Bridge to the other?
Surfingfarmboy says, "Oohh..I'm thrilled you have showcased something which is so much part of my life! I have been over the Harvard Bridge many, many time. In fact, one of my favorite running routes in Boston is to start my run in the North End, run over the Charles River Dam Bridge, proceed along Charles River to the Harvard Bridge, go over the bridge to the Back Bay, do a lap around Fenway Park, run along Boylston Street, (crossing and saluting the Boston Marathon finish line along the way), proceed through the Boston Common, and finish back in the North End. A beautiful run and common route for many local runners. Boston. It's a runner's paradise!"
zztype says one Smoot is also the legal width of stairs not needing handrails, the width of a queen-sized bed, Tom Cruise's height, and the height beneath which men are considered "short." It is also the height of Fred Lau, the San Francisco police chief who had been one inch too short to serve on the police force there until the requirement was changed in order to let him in.
lavagal sends a link to this lickable (http://www.candywrappermuseum.com/jesusmint.html) wrapper, which of course reminds me of these (http://www.testamints.net/). I know, they're lame, but believe it or not, I have had occasion to try them, and they were pretty good!
