Coworkers introduced me to Spicy Ahi & BBQ in Pearl City. Tucked in back of a cramped strip mall next door to a pet grooming salon and Blockbuster and offering an unimpressive view of the parking lot, this place turned out to be quite a gem for bright, fresh, well prepared and great tasting food. I had the chirashi, pictured above, which was basically a beautiful bowl of deliciousness. I was in heaven!

Coworkers took me to lunch at Ideta Restaurant in Kalihi (620 Kohou St.). Considering my fondness for cozy, old-school, slightly musty Japanese eateries (I miss Wisteria!), I can't believe I've never been to this place. The sushi looked bright and fantastic, and the meal portions pretty generous for lunch. I went with the "Ideta Teishoku," with saba, chicken teriyaki, tempura, sashimi, shredded cabbage salad, Japanese-style potato salad (almost mashed), atsuyaki tamago (sweet egg omelet), and a round breaded something-or-other I didn't even have room to try. Delicious. Next time, I'm getting the tempura and sashimi combo.

half a superferry burger! or, at least that's what i'm calling them anyway. i got this email at work this morning:

Please join us today outside at the coffee cart for some Fresh Homemade Hamburgers made by Chef David Dixon. Chef David is the Manager for the Superferry and is helping is out this week while they wait for approval to sail. Stop by and visit and enjoy his creation.

the burgers were at least 1/4 pound, hand-made, with american cheese, bacon, your choice of fixins (tomatoes, onions, ketchup, mustard, mayo, bbq sauce, teri sauce), on a garlic burger roll. add your choice of chips or salad (i got salad w/french dressing) plus a can of soda...$6.25. yum! as i said--could only eat half. otherwise, i'd be asleep at the keyboard right now.

Jealous! Jealous! Did you get it with peppers and onions? mmmmmmmmm. Is that from the Ave? Or are there other locations, too?Just onions, then I added mustard and a bit of garlic Tabasco; the Ave location is still their only one (only it's in a bigger space, just down the block from the one they were in years ago - don't know if you went to the tiny original shop, where there was only room for maybe a dozen people, or the bigger one - which even doubled in size about a year ago, so they can hold quite a few customers now, with nice booths and all that.)In Hawaii?!Actually - I did have a couple folks on O`ahu offer me positions when I was first laid off, if I had been ready to move - but that's not in the plans just yet. But it was nice to know. Until then, I'm working even more on bringing Hawaiian musicians to perform in Seattle.

One boiling fowl, stuffed with sausagemeat and put into a pot with water, and simmered with onions, garlic, leeks, carrots, celery, cloves, peppercorns, thyme, bayleaf, parsley, ginger, alspice, and a piece of chorizo.

After the chicken is tender and falling from the bones, we eat it first as soup...today it's plain, but sometimes I add noodles or wheatberries or ptatoes. Tomorrow I might make chicken pie with the leftover meat, or maybe chicken and dumplings.

At the end, I threw in leftover rice.

Everything was homemade and included poi, rice, squid luau, lomi salmon, chicken long rice, kalua pig, poke, macaroni salad, laulau, custard pies from Lee's Bakery, etc., etc.. My own very small contribution was konbu maki.

Here's a picture of Auntie Lynn in front of the homemade laulau and holding my konbu maki.

I had the mochiko chicken, a coworker had the saba. The mochiko was definitely not the conventional recipe, but still tasty. The saba was great, and reminded me of my Japanese grandmother's thrice-weekly dinners. Most plates are $6.50 to $8.00 and come with miso soup, a salad, and fruit punch or iced tea.

We also had the tataki sashimi, which I'm told used to come with your meal for free. (It still can, depending...) Yum!

yesterday's lunch, after the big bum-out re the closing of imari bento (http://hawaiithreads.com/showpost.php?p=185596&postcount=296), was from another sam sung plaza tenant, elim bakery & juice. the name puzzles me bcs i've never seen any baked goods nor juice in there. the only dessert-y thing they have is a shave ice with fruit and azuki beans. we go to elim for homestyle korean food at a reasonable price. a former (korean) boss of mine introduced me to the place about seven years ago.

eric had the kim chee hamburger steak. it doesn't have any visible kim chee in it but it does have some of that flavor. maybe they use the kim chee pickle liquid in the mix. anyway, the gravy's quite good, and they give two nicely sized, tender patties.

i ordered the pork stir fry. it's made with thinly sliced pork belly, squash, cabbage, onions and ko choo jang/kim chee sauce.

they give sides of korean style takuan, which is a little tangier than japanese style, kim chee (korean strength and yummy!), pickled sweet/hot peppers and a bit of seaweedy soup with some fishcake in it.

onokinegrindz review here (http://onokinegrindz.typepad.com/ono_kine_grindz/2004/12/elim_bakery_jui.html).

yelp review here (http://www.yelp.com/biz/elim-bakery-and-juice-honolulu-2).

i also recommend their homemade man doo (either fried or steamed--they make it in store, and it puts the frozen kine you buy at the grocery to shame!) and their noodle soups. their kim pap (korean sushi) is also quite good and for less than $4.00, quite satisfying. those of you who are as picky about rice as eric and i are will find elim's rice excellent--it's shimmery, uniform in appearance, and slightly sweet.

I whipped out the crock pot yesterday and made a pot of slow-cooked ham bone soup for dinner last night. Today I had it for lunch.

I make all of my soups from scratch and this one was a winner. I started with one big ham bone (frozen from Thanksgiving) with some generous portions of meat and fat coupled with the honey glazing.

I added enough water to cover about two thirds of the bone and let it come to a boil. I added some Black-eyed peas that were soaking for a few hours, carrots, potatoes, celery, onions, and diced tomatoes.

Taking it down to a simmer I added garlic, alae salt, ginger, black pepper, parsley, oregano and a bay leaf.

About 15-minutes before serving I added corn starch to thicken the soup and added some maple syrup to give it a hearty flavor.

This morning I took out the pot and reheated it but this time adding some Rotini noodles and a bit more corn starch turning the left over soup into a very rich Ham stew.

So for lunch today it was Ham stew over rice and a nice bottle of Smirnoff Ice Wild Grape (http://us.smirnoffice.com/swf/main2.swf) malt beverage (flavored beer) under the Avacado tree with the sound of a nice breeze whistling thru my Ironwoods and the waves crashing in the distance.

Now that's how to have a lunch on a Tuesday. :)

Lunch was smoked salmon on top of a healthnut type of tortilla, some lowfat sour cream on that, sprinkled with three large bulbs of RAW garlic...burp....and that topped with fresh and totally raw salsa which has a bit of jalapeno and garlic in it, along with cilantro, tomatoes and onions.

An instant ramen thingy called "UFO" that was left by visiting ohana. Can't read Japanese, but ramen is ramen. Some rehydrated veggies, dark brown sauce to pour over after the hot water. Oh, and a tiny packet of what smells like seaweed. Quite tasty; has a Worcestershire taste to it. And the sizable chunks of cabbage rehydrated nicely.

That hamburger isn't, errr, ground beef intestine...is it? (j/k) Looks ono, Auntie!

For me today...another salad with bacon bits, various veggies, a little canned salmon and a little cheese. And, Craig? I love McD's salads. I tell ya, having a McD's on the lobby level of my building is incredibly convenient! Hmmm...too convenient! Still, when I run out of salad stuff or fresh fruit it's but an elevator ride away. I now have an Arch Card by my front door. :D

I'd like to find out.........:( I am waiting on an idiot from the pest control company who was supposed to be here b/w 12-1230 he called at 1230 and
said he was running 1/2 hour late. I absolutely hate this company but they are like the best of the worst.

Anyway if I ever get my lunch it will be leftover cilantro crusted shutome with sprouts and green beans with a lovely peanut sate' sauce that I made last
night......might be dinner by the time this whole irritation gets done.
