Hi guys just joined your forum.
This palace has got more security than fort Knox.:D LOL!
Anyway? I had a debate with a few Co-workers, on what exactly makes a person a Native Hawaiian?
Since no one really had a good answer I figured I'd google it. That's how I came across this site.
My co-worker claimed that their was actually no such thing as a "Native Hawaiian".
His basis was that, Everyone; even the first Polynesian on these islands were all immigrants.
They all came for somewhere else.
Now that being said.
I asked him, how long would a person need to actually live here before he/she could be a Native Hawaiian? (How many Generations)
By His logic?
At some point and time; everyone who lives here will eventually become "Native Hawaiian".
I do see what he is saying.
But there must be something I'm not seeing?
Any way, thanks for your assistance!

Question: How long would someone have to live in North America to be considered a "Native American Indian"? (And is the term "native" redundant?)
Think about that a bit while I explain something - I'm guessing from your questions that you're not too familiar with the history of the islands. Many people use "an" to denote a resident of the place. For example a "Californian" or "Texan". However Hawaii is like Mexico or India - "Hawaiian" refers to a race of people that existed on the land when western civilization "discovered" the islands.
You can live here as long as you want, but unless you can trace your ancestry to the islands pre-Capitan Cook, you'll never be a "Native Hawaiian". (Well, maybe if a new race of people "discover", conquer and start living on earth, then we'll all become "native".)
Edit: I'll add that it's been said that "history is written by the conquer". It's clear that Western civilization has conquered the islands. From a Western viewpoint, Hawaiians are native to Hawaii.

I don't believe this is a serious inquiry. But I'll indulge you anywayz.
The same anthropology that says Hawaiians "immigrated" to Hawaii, also say that all human beings evolved out of Africa. So by that logic (your friends of course, not yours :) ) there are no countries, no ethnicities and no differences between any humans.
That means you can get on a plane and go anywhere you want tomorrow and proclaim yourself to be Japanese or French or Nigerian and no one can argue with you. And by, ah, your friends logic, you would be right.
You can let all the silly few hundreds of artificial clubs who proclaim themselves to be distinct nationalities and/or ethnicities and or races know that they are just ignorant fools carrying on a baseless charade.
Please let me know what the Japanese and Chinese and Filipinos say when you educate them that they are really just transplanted Africans and have no right to call their current countries their own.
Seriously???? Is this Serious?

Thanks guys! Yes this is a serious question.
He made me wonder? He's portuguese and his family has been here for several generations. I think he is 4 or 5 generation.
I understand that if we actually trace human race back we would end up in Pangea? (I think that how you spell it?)
But? When was it? In the time line, that Polynesians people decided to renounce where they migrated from, and call themselves Hawaiians?
I understand that this is an odd subject.
Hell I don't even think my co-workers even really care.
But I am interested in this.
Because I see his point. And it makes me wonder?
He also stated that since he was a few years older than me. (Both of us born and raised here)
That he was a bit more Hawaiian than I was? (By a few years)
Although I'm only 1/8th, but he is pure Pocho!
I mean at the end of the day!
We are; who we are!
I'm more Jap than Hawaiian.
But in my heart I'm 100% Hawaiian! Born and raised!!
I guess to be honest! the reason I am asking is that some people who are 1/2 Hawaiian or more. Try to make it seem that they are better than me?
That my 1/8 is noth'n!
I was born hea! I live hea! And I will die hea!
That's why I'd like to believe that he might be right. After all we are the "Melting Pot!"
Aloha guys!

I understand that if we actually trace human race back we would end up in Pangea? (I think that how you spell it?)Pangaea. Existed around the Paleozoic & Mesozoic eras, during which time there were no humans.
This whole thread seems like an excuse to stir up a nasty discussion that has gone on repeatedly (on this site as well as any other that touches on topics realted to Hawai`i.) It's a loaded question, one that will never lead to an answer accepted by all. You'd be wise to tread with great caution - or drop it altogether.

Yes! I see what you are saying!
And you're right. I can see that there is no real accepted answer to this issue.
Both sides of the argument has valid points. And it is hopeless to look to the past. Because we cannot change it.
I know that in the big picture "what we are" doesn't matter as much as "what we do!"
Shootz!
I'm outta hea!
Good Night guys!
Aloha!!

Yes, part of my ancestry includes immigrant blood.
However, my Native Hawaiian blood is not immigrant or tourists.
There is only one people with the genotype and phenotype that is Hawaiian.
There is only one people with the language and the culture and the values and the physical features that are Hawaiian.
No reason for that to spark an unfriendly discussion. It's just a simple fact.
The main reason this discussion tends to degenerate into name calling is because there is an entire community who is doing its best, and somewhat successfully, to replace true Hawaiian people with their mostly Plantation people and culture.
Nothing I say is inflammatory. But those who have no identity and have spent their entire life trying to live this lie get real angry when some suggests that they aren't what they claim to be. The real anger is not from any Hawaiian like me, its from the Hawaiianwannabees.
Psychological genocide. Simple really.

I sort of see what you are saying?
But to a certain degree I must respectfully disagree!
I have never til this very day, ever seen a Hawaiian pop out of the ground?
I think to be Hawaiian it is in the heart! Not in the skin!
So on that note?
Yes! We all live on islands called Hawaii!
Yes! We are all Hawaiians!
and YES! All of our ancestors Immigrated here from somewhere else.
Some maybe Polynesian Hawaiian
Some maybe Caucasian Hawaiian
Some maybe Korean Hawaiian
Some maybe Japanese Hawaiian
But in the end? We are all immigrants to these islands. No one race should be considered better than another.
Like I stated before:
"It is not what you are that is important!"
"It is what you do that Matters!"
In this day and age to strive for "segregation" of a certain race? Is Predjudice. Stop the insanity! Stop the hate!
Like the title of this thread. "Melting Pot" No one man should be considered better than another. Simply based on race.
I am only speaking the truth.
"No reason for that to spark an unfriendly discussion. It's just a simple fact."
I think the simplest way to determine if you are Hawaiian, Or other?
Is by where you were born. If you were born in Africa then you are African!
If you were born in Germany then you are German.
I was born here in Hawaii So I consider myself Hawaiian!
( Well actually O.K. American from Hawaii!):D
Peace brah! Aurite! Shootz Den!
Latahz Hawaiians!;)
