Here we go! 15 minutes to kickoff, and I know we're all jealous of those who are there in New Orleans to see it live and in person.
Pre-game show is on now, and Senator Dan Inouye embarassed UH nationally by noting that UH has a Barry Manilow Fan Club.
In spite of that...

GO WARRIORS!!!

I don't think that the Manilow fan club is an RIO, so it's not big of a deal.

Are the warriors gonna feel threatened by a Manilow fan club and get it banished, after feeling threatened by ROYGBIV 8 years ago?

Cable went out here in Volcano Village, too. Apparently, whatever the cable system is here, they're just retransmitting Oceanic's signal. I mean, literally. After a few minutes of snow, we watched as some mysterious force called up Oceanic's digital cable channel guide, then tune from Fox over to the college football channel (in the 1000s somewhere). Now the game is in widescreen with odd grey bars across the top and bottom.

And sadly, we're the ones paying for it, so far. Georgia is bigger and faster and they've played stronger opponents all season long.
I keep telling myself that miracles can happen, but I dunno if we'll get one today.

I think a good thing to do now that things are out-of-hand would be if UH just puts in all of the reserves as a thank you for a great season minus this game.

Maybe, assuming his O-line can protect him and give him time to make a decision and pass.

So what, the O-line going to complain they couldn't contain UGA's blitzing defense?

I don't care if we have Tim Tebow under center next season. We're going to need to get stronger and faster across our entire lineman inventory to earn back any kind of national respect. UH is packing it in already. Kinda sad given that they have battled through so much this year, so many times from behind.

With all of the turnovers UH had today + the sacks and penaties, it's actually amazing they have 10 points given that Georgia has had the ball easily 2x more than UH and scored on all but two drives or so.

Okay. So, the fact he conceded to Bulldogs' fans' argument is over the line.

But you have to face the fact that UGA were well-prepared for this game. They were prepared for our run-n-shoot offense. They were prepared for our 4-3 defense. They were prepared. We didn't get to show the rest of the world how great our offense team is ... until Tyler got on the field.

Right now I'm trying to let go of my grudge against #78 for not protecting Colt when he got slammed on an UGA blitz that converted into a TD.

As for the Defense. Come on! We already know that UGA favor their running game as much as we favor our passing game. Where was the gameplan for that?

Actually, the entire O-line was at fault...especially whoever is #65. But that's what Hawaii pays in going with the run and shoot--small running backs in the backfield to help out on missed assignments and picking up the blitz. But oh well, the season's over.

I'm wondering just how hurt Colt was. I mean, were his injuries so bad that he couldn't come back into the game? If not, he certainly deserved to finish. Colt is the main part of the reason we went 12-0 and got to the Sugar Bowl in the first place, so he deserved to go out playing instead of on the bench.
It's not like Graunke could've won the game. He had the advantage of coming in in the 4th quarter, when Georgia's linemen were finally getting tired. I wonder how Graunke would've done at the beginning of the game.
I'm not picking on Graunke. I just want to know about Colt. If he coulda finished, he shoulda been allowed to.

when your QB's been sacked 8 times (hurried, hit, and knocked down even more times than that), looking at a possible NFL career, the games out of reach, the O-line's beat up and getting outmuscled and run over, it's best to protect his body--a body doesn't heal as well as an ego.

Colt couldn't have won it either, so it didn't matter who was back there. UGA's front 7 was not tired, 'cause they rotated very frequently. And defensively, UGA is very deep like most other SEC teams. Good idea to put in Graunke.

I was there, yes, the last line in that story sucks, but the UGA fans were very well organized in all their chants and songs. They have got several. They have amazing school pride.

Watching Georgia was like watching an NFL team play. The other line in the AP story is 100% true. Those UGA boys were simply "too big, too fast and too strong"... It was like watching the UH play a NFL team. Oh and let me add to that, their band is twice as big and they have twice as many cheerleaders and what else... the list goes on... They have an amazing program. Lots of pride and apparently, lots of money too!

On the way out of the game, all the Georgia fans were very cordial to us. I only saw two rude UGA fans on the way back to our hotel which was about a 2 mile walk.

One guy told a older Japanese couple to "go home" and another was serenading everybody with his chant of "Theres nothing fined in the land, than a drunk obnoxious Georgia fan" but they were the exceptions.

The thousands of other Georgia fans we walked past didn't say anything offensive. Some thanked us for coming and walked beside and chatted with us, asked us about the Ha'a & our ti leaves.

Of course we didn't go into the French Quarter tonight. Things are probably different in there but the NOPD has a strong presence. I hope all goes well in there tonight. I wouldn't want anybody to get hurt or give the Hawaii fans a bad name by getting into drunken brawls.

See everybody later. This is my last post from N.O. We hit the road early in the morning. Too much alcohol and not enough sleep in the past 5 days.

the newberry piece, as it originally appeared in the honadv, read thusly:

NEW ORLEANS -

There was no repeat of the Boise State Miracle. The Georgia Bulldogs were simply too big, too fast and too strong for the team from paradise.

...

Knowshon Moreno ran for a pair of touchdowns in the opening quarter and the Bulldogs' defense made life miserable for Brennan, a Heisman Trophy finalist and catalyst for the nation's highest-scoring team. He was sacked eight times, threw three interceptions and lost two fumbles, one of them recovered for a Georgia touchdown.

After getting slammed to the Superdome turf one last time by Geno Atkins, Brennan staggered to the sideline, his night mercifully done. The junior had the worst showing of his career in a game played to the finish, going 22-of-38 for just 169 yards - less than half of his 348-yard average this season.

...

Hawaii finally got to the end zone with 10 1/2 minutes to go and backup quarterback Tyler Graunke running the offense. He tossed a meaningless 16-yard TD pass to Ryan Grice-Mullen while Brennan watched from the sideline.

In all fairness to the Hawaii star, this wasn't really a fair fight.

Georgia was dominant in the trenches, on both sides of the line. Brennan rarely had time to throw, while Moreno and Thomas Brown, the Bulldogs' 1-2 backfield punch, found plenty of room to do their thing, especially in the tone-setting first half.

...

After Brown leaped into the end zone for a 1-yard TD late in the third quarter, the Bulldog faithful serenaded Hawaii with chants of "Overrrated! Overrated!"

No argument there.

forbes has it here (http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2008/01/02/ap4485011.html) if you, too, want to get your blood pressure up.

i sent their sports editor a scathing email:

What’s wrong with you guys over there? Don’t you read an entire piece before selecting it, or were you just going for column inches? What the heck were you thinking, NOT editing out Paul Newberry’s line about UH being “Overrated! Overrated!” Even ESPN’s online site had the decency and class to leave it out: http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=280010061.

Thanks for reminding me why I read you guys online for free but actually subscribe to the Star Bulletin.

i just checked, and the last paragraphs of the piece at the honadv now read:

In all fairness to the Hawaii star, this wasn't really a fair fight. The Bulldogs were so much stronger, so much faster, so much better in so many areas.

Even so, it was tough to be serenaded with chants of "Overrrated! Overrated!" by the Georgia faithful.

"They're a great football team," Brennan said. "I'm just really disappointed that we didn't show up and at least play our type of football. We're such a better football team than what we showed tonight."

clearly, it had been edited. it now has more quotes from brennan, none of which were there before. even if it wasn't my email that got the thing changed, i'm glad that our warriors were treated with more honor. it sure didn't seem like the advertiser was a hometown paper when i read the original piece!

Yeah, I know Tyler should start next season, though someone here (not me) want Bo Levi Mitchell.

The only thing I care about now is our hometown team. :D

Make that Hawai'i's team.

umm...oh yeah, you cared a whole lot when you practically agreed with newberry that the warrior football team was overrated by saying he was just being "brutally honest."

pfft.

it's either that you were just so caring, or that you were just so lazy in reading as the advert's sports bureau was when they posted original piece in its entirety with its "overrated...no argument there" part.

which one are you gonna man up to and admit being?

I admit I was lazy in reading the last part. Didn't I already said that was over the line?

I only cared for what seems to be an analysis of the game.

Are you going to keep hounding me that I'm not fan enough now? You want to measure me if I'm a Warrior fan now? You still want to keep this going? I'm trying not to hate you, fan to fan.

You sure you want to end the thread this way? Going at each other's throats?

Or do you want to call peace?

KGMB Liz Chun reported that despite the loss, the fans stayed and gave UH a standing ovation and altogether sang our state song, Hawai'i Pono E.

Then as appreciation, the Warrior team danced the Ha'a. We hope that won't be the last performance there.

I'm still proud of them, no matter what anyone tries to tell me OTHERWISE.

Watching Georgia was like watching an NFL team play. The other line in the AP story is 100% true. Those UGA boys were simply "too big, too fast and too strong"... It was like watching the UH play a NFL team.

Thanks for your insight. Well, you seen it in person. I only saw it on TV. And while Georgia is no doubt talented, I just don't think they are THAT good. In other words, I think our O-Line made the Dawgs' D look like Pro Bowlers. Right off the bat, I knew something was wrong. Maybe some our boys were being "party hardy" before the game. It wouldn't be the first time its happened. Still remember some of the stories about more than a few key UH players painting Waikiki red on the night before a Hawaii Bowl embarrassment against Tulane a few years ago.

Wow. It's one thing to compare the UGA to an NFL team, it's another to compare them to a Pro Bowl team.

How come you can say that and NOT get hounded by ericncyn? :(

thank you for admitting you were lazy. thanks also for editing your post to offer an olive branch. this was never a "going at your throat" thing--how can it be, when all i've done was point out what you've said or implied?

whether you hate me or not for any other reason doesn't matter to me. regarding the sincerity of your warrior fandom, it's not for me to judge that. after all, i've admitted elsewhere on HT that i myself am not usually a UH fan because i don't usually pay much attention to sports of any kind.

however, even i have the prescience not to go adding insult to injury by agreeing with someone insulting brennan et al with jeers of "overrated" when the whole state is rooting for UH to win on a national stage. i'm glad you admitted that your seeming in concordance with that opinion was merely the result of your apathy.

easy. they didn't agree UH was "overrated."

i'll wholeheartedly agree that tonight, UH didn't play the way they should have played--the way we know they're capable of playing. the warriors made mistakes and missed opportunities. they were soundly beat by a team that was bigger, faster and stronger.

but no way is UH "overrated!" they deserved the ranking they got, and they deserved being in the sugar bowl.

The craziest things about this game was:

watching 3, 4 even 5 guys pour through the Hawaii offensive line looking almost untouched.

watching the offense for the most part not really throw any kind of pass more than 10 yards.

seeing how bad UH's defense was against the run. We were lucky that Washington for some unknown reason, gave up on it in the second half of that game.

why UH didn't call a series of timeouts before the end of the first half and finally called their first with :30 seconds left when they could have had at least 2 minutes on the clock and the ball had they used them.

Who's the huge running back guy? He looked like a good candidate to block from the backfield to me.

Oh well, we have next year. First game is @ Florida versus "system" quarterback and Heisman winner Tim Tebow, so I think the guys who are still around should start training ASAP so we don't get killed again to start next season.

Just putting in my .02 here.

UH Warriors should be proud of their season, I believe the die hard fans, new fans and anyone that followed the UH Warriors alike sure are. This team has shown the nation what Hawaii is all about. We have heart and we BELIEVED!!! They accomplished their dream and has done the State proud!

I was in a heated argument with a GA fan on one of my hobby forums while the game was on, & boy did I let him have it. Talk about no class at all. Sure we were losing, Hawaii just wasn't in their game tonight and sure the caliber of the type of team GA is surely out performed HI, but for him to dog Colt the way he did just set me off. Not to mention he decided to quote the GA chant of "Overrated", man I wanted to reach through my screen and *****! So, HT, I let him have it, hawaiian "tita" style, lol. He backed off after awhile though...

I am so VERY proud of them, of their season & for all they have accomplished!

** Will JJ be back next year?? What about Grice-Mullen and Bess will they enter the draft?? hmmmmmm:rolleyes:

Somebody mentioned the GA contingent with tons of bandmembers, cheerleaders, and organized fans. I would like to comment that that is the way it is in many parts of the mainland.

I realize Hawaii loves its football. But the level of involvement by HI fans is nowhere close to the zeal that can be found in many High School programs around the nation. This is most especially obvious at the local high school level where teams often have 8 cheerleaders, no flag girls, no rifle squad, no band, and the stands are filled with stoic, silent, parents. No chants, no interplay w/ cheers, very little cheering, no noisemakers, and, with the exception of Konawaena HS, a very dismal snackbar.

I been here 15 years, and coached for a few. It was by far my biggest frustration. Outside the 30-40 guys on the field, it's hard to get anybody else involved. Maybe that is what they call Polynesian Paralysis.

Very funny, not ENOUGH interest in football. I've always seen it from the other perspective, that is, not enough interest in academics. Watching sports is among the greatest wastes in our society - it's an activity designed to appeal to bored, lazy sheep. Finding pride in having a winning team is similar to having pride in your appearance on the basis of what you're wearing. Go Warriors!

Georgia played better than UH in last night's game. Could we have won the game? We certainly would have had a chance if we had played smarter, been more disciplined and faster. Yes, Georgia was "bigger, faster and stronger", but that does not a winning team make. Proper execution makes a winning team and we failed to execute. I am proud of the Warriors accomplishments throughout the season and I am not ashamed that we lost. You gotta play those who are better than you or you never get better. Sometimes you'll lose and that's part of how you learn.

Watched the game as well. I was rooting for Hawaii the whole way and it was sad to see that game eat Colt's soul. He did what he had to do, unfortunately it was not enough. He has bounced back through worst though. He'll need some time but he will be OK getting through this.

Purely from a football point of view, notwithstanding who was playing and the emotions that go along with it, you have to give it up to Georgia. Hawaii did not establish a run so Georgia's D line was teeing it up on the pass rush. They did not try to match up beef for beef on the outside. The pressure from the ends were with smaller, quicker people, with a whole lot faster feet. When you get an O lineman leaning (not moving their feet) and pushing with their hands, you pretty much own them. Plus the defensive coordinator cycled people in and out almost every play, that will start to wear on you. All of that disrupts rhythm and 'the system" relies on rhythm for it to work.

In the pregame, I really liked the commentary about how the UH players dealt with every game as it was a do or die game. "Lose and the dream ends" or something to that effect. They were not happy just to play in the Holiday Bowl and is testament to the fortitude of the entire team.

No shame here. Georgia was one game away from playing in the big one and I trust that the exposure UH got from the nation (perhaps not the media) will help this program in the future.

What the future holds for June Jones, no one knows. He has one more year left on his contract and he is NFL material for sure. He did what other UH teams have never done, is there enough incentive for him to do it again, but win this time?

Anyone who has been following the Advertiser for the past couple of years knows that they make a desperate attempt to put random crap online, just for the sake of being “first.” What obviously occurred in this instance is, the webmaster put whatever was finished from the Newberry article online while the local writer was feverishly going through the tape of people he interviewed, selecting quotes, and editing his rough draft.

Why didn't Hawaii's offensive line use the crack back blocking or chop blocking scheme against a bigger and faster Georgia's defense? The Tennesee Titans used a legal crack back block to stop the Chargers' Shawn Merriman from just going straight ahead to get the QB. These were not your father's undersize Georgia Junkyard Dawgs. These were pro prospects on Georgia's team who would have been cautious against a smaller low hitting at your knees team. They would have been looking both ways before rushing the passer.

What the future holds for June Jones, no one knows. He has one more year left on his contract and he is NFL material for sure. Actually, his contract is officially up in just a couple of months, not one more year. And surely you know that he came to UH from the NFL, where he coached for a long time, and in coming to UH he turned down an offer to be head coach of the San Diego Chargers. So yeah, he's "NFL material." :D
JJ will spend the next 7 days in Kona, in meetings with his agent. So far, they haven't heard anything at all from Herman Frazier, but they have heard from SMU in Texas and from an unnamed NFL team.

from an unnamed NFL team.

I hear you, some coaches leave the NFL and never make it back, happy to coach at the collegiate level.

I believe only two NFL teams have head coaching vacancies (at this time).

Who is looking or has been approached at the NFL level (as reported):
Bill Cowher
Marty Schottenheimer
Jason Garrett
Josh McDaniels

plus all those college coaches that want to make the move to the NFL.

Too early to tell anything now, things will get clearer after the Superbowl.

doesn't matter if all they were trying to be was "first." they could have spent two minutes editing out the "overrated" part, like espn did. clearly, the webmaster or the sports bureau or treena shapiro or whatever dunderhead it was who posted the piece on the hondadv website, reads about as assiduously as you and random do.

Did you see the expression on Colt's face when Graunke completed that 4th quarter (and only) TD pass. He wanted to get back in so bad and when that opportunity was missed it looked as if Brennan's life was sucked out of him.

Whether UH didn't play smart enough or not, I just think they played their best...it's just Georgia played better and they should have because they were #3 Ranked vs UH's #10 position. You don't get that high by being intimidated by a team seven positions down.

But for June Jones, just to get the invite to the BCS was an achievement in itself! When my wife asked me how come this game is so important to Hawaii. I looked at her in disbelief! Getting into the Sugar Bowl had just eclipsed the UH's tremendous WAC title! That in itself was unbelievable but then to get into the BCS!!! Forget WAC...Hello BCS, and then we lost, oh how bittersweet that loss was.

Today at work we all wanted to talk about it, but we just couldn't bear to bring it up. But when we did...oh man the frustrations about what should have, what could have, why didn't we all came out like a bottled up genie waiting to explode. You don't just take a loss like that on the chin and say, "Oh well". But what do you do? You can't beat a coconut tree with your bare fists out of frustration. This was a big loss emotionally for our Warriors. Brennan definately was affected by that 4th quarter sideline watching Gruenke make that TD pass...the one he should have made and wanted to make but couldn't. You saw him, he was begging Jones to put him back in, he needed those passing yard stats for just this one game.

Now for my armchair analysis: I think Jones should have pulled Brennan in the 2nd quarter so he could watch the Georgia defense then come back in during the 3rd quarter and do his magic.

Georgia did was HPU's Tony Selitto did with his basketball team, constantly substitute, keeping fresh players in the game to wear down the opponent. My goodness, Brennan was on the field for three quarters and got sacked 8 times because of it! How in the world can you rally when your star QB is being turned into poi? By the time he was pulled, he was hurting so bad he had to be walked off!

Man watching yesterday's Sugar Bowl was like watching Rollerball. As if it wasn't a game anymore. Brennan came in smiling, left the press conference with a look of dispair. The hurt went deeper than his shoulder blades...it definately affected him.

Man what a loss...but there's always next season!:)

Very surprised and kinda sad....all these day prior to the Sugar Bowl, almost every person I saw around town wore a tshirt that somewhat promoted the Sugar Bowl or WAC champions. After Tuesdays loss, I went to work today, Wednesday, and to my shock, I hardly saw ANYONE in town wearing a shirt or at least something to promote the warriors...although I WAS wearing an older UH cap and green Addidas jacket, and WILL BE probably till after the BCS Champ game. I sure hope people dont just give up and walk away from these WAC champions....if they do, guess who just maybe are THE REAL losers...just my humble opinion.

How in the world can you rally when your star QB is being turned into poi?You may have something here. Taking Brennan out in the 2nd quarter when time wasn’t such a big factor, may have been a golden opportunity for Colt to catch his breath and regroup. It was obvious, at least to me, that the Bulldog pressure and crowd noise were causing him to lose synch with his receivers. Better to hear the headset breakdown while it’s happening, then between offensive sets?

Ultimately, UH needed an answer for Marcus Howard, which they didn’t get. Still, though. Interesting.

craig, good point about taking colt out for a breather/better perspective. the other thing that puzzled me (and mentioned by the announcers) was the late use of their timeout near the end of the half.

it's in the past now and there are some basic lessons learned that i think most sane people will agree on.

fortunately, i think most warrior fans are still fans and respect all that they've accomplished. it was great to see that small faithful at the airport welcoming the warriors back from their trip.
