So far, we've been talking about who should be the new HC of Warrior Football.
But who should be the new AD of UH Athletics?
Any takers?

If he doesn't get the HC job, I would hope that Dick Tomey at least receives serious consideration for the AD position.
Another name that has been bandied about is the HHSAA's Keith Amemiya. Judging by the good job he has done in securing corporate sponsors for all of the high school tournaments, I think he would be another quality candidate. If he doesn't get the job, then hopefully he's at least offered an associate AD post.

As much as I like to see Dick Tomey back, I don't know that he has any AD experience. Yes, he would have made a great coach. No question about that. Tomey's friends at UH are all gone, so I don't think he would be a good choice. Bob Wagner has AD experience, but at a different level. Remember, he was chased (fired) out of UH, because people were restless with a few bad years after the Holiday Bowl. If I was Wagner, I would be bitter toward UH. What did he really do wrong to deserve being fired?
Other candidates I don't know about.
But I think interim AD Clapp will get the job. Currently, he is the only one that has submitted an application, that we know of. It's just easier that way. Easier transistion. Easier on UH. Easier on the programs.

HHSAA's Keith Amemiya indicated that he will submit an application, as did Bob Wagner. My personal favorite, KGMB's Rick Blangiardi, will not. Ex-UH Associate AD and current Hawaii Bowl Executive Director Jim Donovan is another possible applicant.
Carl Clapp's major weakness is that he was brought in by Herman Frazier. There are many who do not want any holdovers from HF's regime.

What about Rockne Freitas, wasn't he an associate under Stan Sheriff?..or is he happy being a chancellor(?).

Any of the above would be good candidates. But if I had to pick one, it would be Amemiya. Out of all those guys, Keith had the toughest challenge in trying to secure title sponsors for all of the state high school tourneys and doing it during a rough time for the local economy.

There's a world of difference between being a capable asst. or associate AD vs. being a good head AD. Clapp may very well do a good job when it comes to things like office paperwork and operating athletic facilities. But it takes a lot more than that to be an effective head AD. For UH, the main thing is that the AD has to be good at raising money and drumming up support from the local community. He/she has to be an advocate for UHAD interests when it comes to legislation coming from the NCAA and the Hawaii State Capitol. In short, the ideal AD candidate will be a mover-and-shaker type of person. Someone can be involved for many years in athletic administration, but at the same time, not be cut out for the AD job.
Now if Clapp can prove that he has the attributes I described in the previous paragraph, then he should receive some consideration for the post. But if not, then the university needs to look elsewhere.
