I work near Iolani Palace and noticed signs up a few days ago and saw a bunch of tents over there this morning.

I hadn't seen anything on the local news about what's going on over there but found this when I googled it online.

GMO engineering is very big news in NZ too. I wish I had known earlier - I would have gone over to join their march and try to kokua their efforts.

People protested the Salk Vaccine for Polio too.
Gregor Mendel was all wet when he tried to grow better peas.
Science is scary.

Boooooo!!

They pretty much do that every year around Legislature opening and anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

I stopped in during my lunch break to see what they're all about. I picked up some flyers and listened to some of the speakers. Took some pix and interviewed some key folks for my freelancing gig.

Interesting... science vs. culture...

I back the Kanaka Maoli on this one. Culture, spirituality, geneology and ethics win in my book.

Free the Taro!!! GE Free!!! Free Haloa !!! GE Free!!!

We've been doing genetic engineering from the dawn of agriculture - it's called cross-breeding and selective breeding.

We've been doing genetic engineering from the dawn of agriculture - it's called cross-breeding and selective breeding.

Hybridization can and does occur naturally and quite readily with man's intervention. Ancient farmers (including Kanaka Maoli) have bred new plants and animals for thousands of years but genetic engineering is different from traditional breeding.

In traditional breeding it is possible to mate a pig with another pig to get a new variety, but it is not possible to mate a pig with a potato or a mouse.

The GMO research being conducted on taro includes inserting portions of genes from rice, wheat and grapevine which would not occur naturally.

I like free-camp too!

Haha... yeah I thought about that too! Camping at Iolani Palace would really cut down on my commute to work! Plus, I'm always up for a march or a protest if it's something that I believe in. Unfortunately though, the tents are being packed up today...
