OK you American Rugby fans on the mainland - I hope you'll come out to support the USA Rugby Sevens tournament on Feb 9 & 10 at Petco Park in San Diego.

I've been to Sevens tournaments in Hong Kong (the original) and Wellington and I'm keen to see how the Yanks respond to the game and what kind of an atmosphere there will be in San Diego.
For those of us who love rugby, "sevens" is just another word for PARTY! and from the pictures I've seen from last year's event - the Americans seem to have grasped that fact!

Part of the experience is to come up with a clever costume then persuade your mates to wear it with you (safety in numbers?) The Wellington Sevens is this weekend and it's already been announced that they will not allow anyone into the grounds who is dressed in a Borat "mankini" - if the picture is displayed, you can see why - no word yet on whether the fashion police will be turning away Borat lookalikes in San Diego.
I like this description of the cast of characters that turned up last year in San Diego...
There was the Canadian Mounted Policeman, the gals in Stars-and-Stripes bunny ears (an annual fixture, one we hope continues), the squad of Islanders (we’re not sure which island) topped with bushy Afro wigs, the Elvis guys, an English gladiator, the ubiquitous Geico gecko (garbed in an “I Love Rugby” tee shirt), British men in face paint and, for some reason, sun dresses, someone with a horse head mask (representing which country?), and five shirtless men with their chests painted in red, white and blue to spell out GUPPY (Eagle James Gillenwater’s nickname) whenever they stood together in the right order.
And there was singing, in at least five languages.
I just have to remember to pack my "I love rugby" t-shirt and my Stars & Stripes bunny ears!
