I figure the "HT Photo Sharing Thread" in the Workshop section is really more about photography as a hobby, and perhaps folks were getting tired of seeing the boating photos there, so... this thread is for those who want to see 'em and also will post some of their own. And it seems more appropriate here in the "Player's Place" section, for obvious reasons.
The photos in this post (and the next few posts to follow) were all taken at today's race on Kaneohe Bay.

I get a chuckle out of the last one, where it looks like Keith (steering the boat) is ducking to stay under the airplane. :p
I'm curious to hear which one is your favorite.

Guess the second shot of Ho'okahiko.

I'd be salivating for sure.
Thanks for the Great sailing shots!

Guess the second shot of Ho'okahiko. That would be the last shot in post #2, with the closeup of the cockpit and Ron looking over and grinning, right? Ho`okahiko is a Bristol Channel Cutter 28, and Ron just returned recently from a cruise to Tahiti on it. Had one crew with him going down there, and singlehanded it home. 21 days each way.
I like that photo too, but I kinda feel my own favorite is the very first photo (Miki`oi) in post #1.
If I was a dog and my owner's name pavlov... I'd be salivating for sure. Ah yes, good old Pavlovian Response. But I think his training regimen involved food as rewards, not boats. That silly landlubber. :p
Thanks for the Great sailing shots! I'm looking forward to seeing boating shots from you and other HT'ers too!
Totally overcast and frequently rainy over here today, so probably will do some work on the boat instead of going out with it. :(
Which is a P-3 Orion, the aircraft involved in the Hainan Island incident (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-3_Orion). Right. And those are the planes they want to phase out and replace, as I recall.
That particular one was getting ready for takeoff. It's even more fun sailing right there when the P-3's are coming in for a landing and are maybe 100' over the top of the mast.
Wow. Awesome photo! Thanks. I saw that opportunity coming and just got lucky.

This was done by converting the image to grayscale, increasing the contrast (to make the meaningful lines of the boat more distinguishable), then converting the image again to bitmap and adjusting the output.

Dang, Pomai, I love that effect. Down the road I want to take some photos of palm trees and turn 'em B&W and graphically interesting, blow 'em up (well, you know what I mean!), frame 'em then hang 'em in my town condo. You're giving me some great ideas altho' I'm not a PS-slut...don't even own it! Possibly my beloved Adobe PhotoDeluxe (Mac OS 9!!!) will work. Should be fun.

LikaNui, I thought my reaction to the storm photos likely contributed to your moving your boating pics over here. That wasn't my intention and I hope you won't stop posting your boating photos in the Photo Sharing Thread.
You mentioned that you wondered if posters wouldn't tire of seeing the boat photos. I don't think that's the case. Since I started posting pics, I notice I seem to post more than others and I've wondered if I haven't overdone it, too. I find communication on the net to be a little complex without being able to see others directly. The emoticons help. They say the nail that stands up gets hammered down. I have a fairly limited interest in being hammered down, but I enjoy putting the photos up so I guess I'll keep posting till I feel that first thump on the head.:p
I don't have many boating photos, but I have a few from catamaran trips. Here's one coming up the west coast of Kauai toward the Napali Coast. I don't know where the kayakers came from, but it must've been the Northshore as it would've been a really long paddle from the South.

On that same trip, we came upon a pod of dolphins. The boat captain said he thought there might have been more than a hundred. Many came right up to the boat. The formations of the Napali Coast were amazing. These whale/dolphin watch/snorkel trips are a blast. It's money well spent and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for your thoughts, Jim, but I simply decided -- as I wrote in post #1 here -- that the Photo Sharing Thread was for photography as a hobby, and the boating photos are about a sport and have a limited audience. Ergo, anyone clicking on this thread will know exactly what they're getting, while the other thread is always a mixed bag full of fun surprises.

Hey, I was out on the bay that same Sunday! ...and a few pictures were taken of me, too. http://www.flickr.com/photos/poinographer/2421736981/ I saw you, Doug! I just didn't know that you were you. :p
I'd hauled ash up to "A" mark and was waiting for our fleet to round the mark, and saw your 14's get there first. Was it yours that broached, or the other one? I hope it was the other one, cuz I mentioned to the other folks on my boat that whichever 14 rounded first must be happy, looking at the other one lying mast-down on the water. They did a good job of righting it, but sure lost valuable time.
I told our R/C Sail that we should be coordinating with you guys on the race schedules, to avoid those kind of traffic jams. It was like the H-1 at rush hour out there!
I was blasting around at 22 knots taking photos after our start, but tried to make sure my wake didn't affect any of your racers (or ours). Next time, call me and I'll swoop up behind you so you can surf my wake. ;) And I'll get some pix of you too.
Those 14's are hot.
EDIT: Hey Doug, I'm in one of your photos -- the one at this link (http://www.flickr.com/photos/poinographer/2422549722/in/photostream/)!!! There are two sailboats way in the background, and just to the right of them, see the powerboat with two antennas? Dat's me.

Neat!
It was the other boat that capsized. In fact, that capsize gave us first place for that race! ...often the case in the I-14, haha.
By the way, next weekend would be another good occasion to take your boat out for photos. Saturday thru Tuesday is the Pacific Rim Championship for I-14s. We'll have about 20 boats with sailors from all over: Japan, Australia, Canada, Hawaii, Washington, California, and even one or two from the East Coast!
Unfortunately, I can't get Monday and Tuesday off, but the first two days should be fun enough!

Well, I never did see Doug on Saturday. There was so much VOG that I could barely see the front of my own boat. (Just kidding, but not by much.) Not much wind either, only about 6 to 8 knots.
Doug, those 25 International-14s sure looked great, even though I kept our race far away from yours so we wouldn't interfere. I hope you're doing well in it!
Meanwhile, I got some decent shots even with the vog and light wind. I like this series of three, especially the last one:

Are you talking about the first photo in post #32? That was taken just moments after the starting gun... and Miki`oi is already leading the race. :p But they had a new crew on board, plus they're still adjusting for new sails and a new mast, since they got dismasted very recently. Rig tuning is still a work in progress too.
They did have a near-broach yesterday on one of the runs offwind when they popped their 1.5oz. spinnaker. :o Sorry I didn't get a photo of it.
And yes, all the racers can learn a lot by seeing photos of their sail trim.

Actually, I was referring to first picture in post #1. Stepping a new mast explains the situation. My guess is that they need to rake the masthead a little more aft. That should take the weather helm out. Look at the last picture in post #4. You can tell that Miki'oi's mast is really raked forward compared to the boat in the foreground.
My favorite boat is the Bristol Channel Cutter. What a classy, classic look!

That should take the weather helm out. Look at the last picture in post #4. You can tell that Miki'oi's mast is really raked forward compared to the boat in the foreground. The one in the foreground is a Hawkfarm 28, with an adjustable backstay (manual, not hydraulic), while Miki`oi is a Ranger 33 with no adjustable backstay. You seem to know sailing rather well, so you probably know that Ranger 33's are very tender boats to begin with. Then add an owner and crew who are pretty new to the sport and make the common beginner's mistake of thinking that heeling the boat over really far means they're going fast. But they're learning. Their only previous boat was a Hobie 16 before they bought Miki`oi about a year ago.
My favorite boat is the Bristol Channel Cutter. What a classy, classic look! Indeed. Too bad they stopped building them last year, though I imagine someone will buy the molds and tooling and start building them again. Ron thought the closure might lower the resale value of Ho`okahiko, but I postulated that it might increase instead, becoming more of a collector's item.
Ron sailed her to Tahiti and back last year. Double-handed going, and singlehanded returning. 21 days each way.
Excellent pics, LikaNui! What a beautiful day. No vog in sight. Looks like it was a great time. Always is! The Ko`olau mountains look a little hazy due to the high wind blowing all the salt spary into the air, but it was still lovely out there, as usual.
You and your camera should come along some time.

I’m a big fan of The Marimed Foundation (http://marimed.org/), which works with troubled kids. Part of their program is ocean-based, teaching kids teamwork and responsibility. Marimed’s main vessel is the 96-foot Makani Olu, a three-masted staysail schooner. (See this link (http://marimed.org/makaniolu.cfm) for more info, as well as other places on their website.) Some of you may have seen Makani Olu on her mooring in the southeast corner of Kaneohe Bay, pretty close to Kaneohe Yacht Club.
When I came back in from the sandbar yesterday I snapped a few shots of her. All 20 of the photos are at this link (http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Makani%20Olu%205-26-08/). For all three or four of you who are interested, the photos from Memorial Day at the sandbar are finally available. You can see all 32 photos at this link (http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Sandbar%205-26-08/?start=all). Either click on Slideshow in the top right corner, or click on the first thumbnail to enlarge it and then keep clicking Next.
I anchored well away from the huge crowd at the high spot. The first few photos show the crowd from a distance, and those were taken around 9:30 in the morning when the crowd was still small. When I pulled up anchor and left around 4:30 in the afternoon, I went by the greatly increased crowd and took the rest of the photos.
The big news, of course, was the increased presence of law enforcement. There were two of these Coast Guard boats:
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Sandbar%205-26-08/100_0355.jpg
And two of these Police boats:
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Sandbar%205-26-08/100_0348.jpg
There were also two similar boats from DLNR, so a total of six patrol boats. I didn't get pix of the DLNR boats because they were busy citing people at the time and I didn't want to make them nervous by approaching too close.
Part of the reason I support the extra enforcement is because of idiots like the jerk in the photo below, who blasted by me on his jet ski at about 35mph while I was standing in the water taking a photo of my boat (behind him in the photo) and he almost hit kids swimming nearby:
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Sandbar%205-26-08/100_0313.jpg
I waved at him, but I think I may have forgotten to use all five fingers.
More photos of the crowds to follow.

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Sandbar%205-26-08/100_0366.jpg
And then I pulled away, hammered the throttles, and got the heck away from all that. The photos don't give you a clue about the noise from 100 or so stereos cranked up to 11, but you get the idea of what it was like out there.
Thank God for the law enforcement that kept things under control and kept the crowds much smaller than in past years.
All pau.

Nice! Looked like perfect weather over there.
And I'm jealous glad that you got a chance to get out on the water today. I've missed the last two weekends due to mechanical problems, exacerbated by a totally unreliable mechanic. :(

The mechanic finally fixed my boat (bad starter on the starboard engine)... hooray!
I went out for a race last weekend, but it was pretty boring thanks to wind at a steady 0 knots, gusting to 1. (Okay, it was actually about 5 knots.) Photos were nice, but nothing exciting.
Yesterday's Channel Challenge race was better, with winds about 12 to 15 knots. I'll post some race photos a little later, or maybe tomorrow. But the race was long enough that I was able to spend a bit of time at the sandbar, so here are some photos from that part of the day.
I was in a bit of a hurry, and had my kayak along for the ride:

I drop in and take a look at these from time to time. I don't have much to say about them except they are all very good photos (except for maybe the ones that were taken on the very voggy days). Certainly your new camera has improved the photos and you capture the spirit and action on the open sea very well.

As for the bandwidth thing, I think if you are remote hosting your photos (like me from Flickr.com and other websites), the bandwidth usage here at HT is negligible. And even if you are hosting the photos here, I don't think they are using up that much bandwidth...

An absolutely spectacularly perfect day at the sandbar! Perfect weather, with just the perfect amount of wind, absolutely flat seas, and water that was just cool enough to feel refreshing every time I jumped in. I went way past the crowd and had total privacy and silence. Purrrrfect! (Friends came by after a few hours and stayed just long enough for us to share lunch.) Read a little, swam, did a few little projects on the boat, swam, paddled the kayak, swam, read some more, swam. Sweeeeet.
In this first photo at anchor, the water I'm in is only about 2-1/2' deep. You can see there are only a couple of waves breaking across the reef way out in the distance. And of course I had the kayak sticking out of the cockpit:

Notice the change in the color of the water, probably easiest to see on the left side of the photo and about 1/3 of the way up -- the light colored water is about 4' deep, then the darker water is a sudden dropoff to about 40':

Nine boats raced yesterday, with perfect winds starting at 12 knots and increasing to 15 to 18 knots. Here are three photos from the starting line:
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/MKYC%20Race%207-26-08%20Faves/100_0852.jpg
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/MKYC%20Race%207-26-08%20Faves/100_0855.jpg
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/MKYC%20Race%207-26-08%20Faves/100_0856.jpg
These are "beer can" races, which means they're more for fun and learning experience than for serious hard-core racers. With that in mind, I started the season with a very long starting line, to give the boats more maneuvering room and avoid expensive accidents and crashes. As the season has gone on and the racers have gained experience, I've shortened the starting line a little bit each time and tightened things up, increasing their learning curve.
The other part of the starting sequence is for them to learn how to time their approach to the line. (There are horns at 10 and 5 minutes before the start.) At the beginning of the season, some of the boats would be 2 or 3 minutes late to the line, but they're all improving now.
The shorter start line and improved timing is making for some fun starting shots, like the first ones above.

Taking these photos is lots of fun, and a good challenge, too. I've gotta drive the boat, get into photo positions without hitting other boats and without interfering with the racing, handle the camera in bouncy water, frame the shots, and take the shots of moving boats from a moving boat... all at the exact same time. It's fun!

So Lika Nui, are you racing at the same time while the photos are being taken or are you just keeping up to take the photos? These have plenty of action and captures the sport well.

When I take photos I'm on my powerboat, serving as the Committee Boat. I go out about 45 minutes before the start and set the marks for the start/finish line (which means anchoring large round inflatable buoys in about 30' of water). Then I run the countdown sequence -- blowing three horns at the 10-minute warning, two horns at the 5-minute warning, then one long horn at the start. Then I instantly drop the horn and raise the camera and start shooting (but I also have to watch and make sure none of the boats are over the start line early, in which case they have to circle back and re-start).
After the start, I blast off to take photos of the individual boats by pulling up alongside them, slowing down to their speed, then taking the photos with one hand while steering my boat with the other hand. (Oh, and judging the background, the lighting, and zooming the lens in and out too.) Then I'll slow down and drop back, go behind them, and speed up and get shots from their other side.
Then I'll blast off at full speed (22 knots) to a different boat and go through the same sequence, and so forth. But I may not get them all on the first leg of the race course. If the fastest boats are getting close to the first mark (the yellow buoys you see in some of the photos), I blast up to the mark to get the photos of them rounding it. Then I'll blast off to shoot the individual boats I may have missed on the first leg. Whew!
But wait. There's more.
As the boats approach the finish line I have to blast back there and get exactly even with the line. I blow a horn at the exact moment they cross the line, then I look at my watch and pull up my clipboard and record their precise finish time, accurate down to the second. (And I have to maneuver my boat to stay in exactly the same position, since the wind and waves are trying tp push me around.) Once all the boats are finished, I calculate their true finish positions using a handicap system. Then I have to pull up the buoys that make the start/finish line, then head on back into the marina and tie up the boat, put everything away, wash it down to get rid of all the salt spray, and then I get to go to the clubhouse for the post-race barbecue and announcement of the results.
That's all there is to it. Easy! :p
(And on the days that I don't serve as Committee Boat, I'll go out on various of the sailboats as helmsman and coach. No photos on those days.)
But wait. There's still more.
After the barbecue I go home, download all the photos to my computer, upload them to PhotoBucket.com, send them to all the racers, then post some here as well.
And other than a rare cropping of a particular photo, they're totally untouched. No PhotoShop tricks or anything.
You're still invited to grab your cameras and come along some time, Mel. Remember, this is the ride:

Out of all of them.... this is my favorite shot.
Love the vessel, angle of heel, position of camera relative to subject,
the fact that she appears to be sailing away from land for a "Blue Water" journey, ...

This wasn't intentional, and it wasn't cropped; it just shows why it's tricky framing photos on the ocean. My boat bounced in the choppy water just when I snapped the shot:

Here's a little better view of that Coast Guard cutter. The darkness on the aft half of the hull is from their generator's exhaust. The tall building in the background is the Pohai Nani retirement center. Maybe the Coasties are protecting them? :

It's been a while since I shot a race. Four weeks ago I missed one because I had a board meeting, and then two weeks ago the race was cancelled due to a total lack of wind.
We did get a race in yesterday, though. It was perfectly clear and sunny, but with light winds that never got above 8 knots. Not very exciting conditions and not the best day for photos, but I'll share a few of them.
I think this one is my favorite, just because it's different than most:

I found a body floating in the water yesterday.
I’d headed up to ‘A’ mark well ahead of the fleet, intending to get photos of everyone rounding it, but shortly before getting there I saw the body in the water a ways off. (After a couple of decades of doing offshore search-and-rescue I was pretty sure of what I was seeing.) Hammering the throttles, I blasted toward the victim and prepared to call the Coast Guard and the police.
Getting closer… yep, it was a body.
But getting right up to it… it was a plastic mannequin!
Turns out the Coast Guard Auxiliary was doing a man-overboard drill. They were way off in the distance but came over when they saw me near the ‘body’ to tell me what they were doing and congratulate me for being observant. I reminded them that it would have been appropriate if they’d broadcasted a message that a drill was in progress, then I radioed the racers to advise them of the fake body near ‘A’ mark.
Here's a shot (taken afterward; that's the CG Auxiliary boat in the background) of what I'd seen at first:
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/MKYC%20Race%209-27-08%20People/100_1208.jpg

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/MKYC%20Race%209-27-08%20People/100_1209.jpg

Last Sunday I served as the Safety Boat for the Hawaii Youth Sailing Association. (This is the sixth year I've been involved with HYSA.) There were four races that day, in two classes of boats -- El Toros (a 7' boat with a logo on the sails that looks like a mushroom) and Lasers (slightly longer and more complex, and the sail logos look like an asterisk).
There were about 40 kids participating and they came from all around the island and from the Junior Sailing programs at various local yacht clubs. The weather was just perfect for the children, with no rain and with wind at about 10 to 12 knots.
Starting at 11am, we ran two races, passed out lunches that we'd prepared for the kids, ran two more races, then had the awards ceremony and a big barbecue afterwards and showed videos from three different videographers, including one on my boat. In the next week we'll make CD's for all the kids, with the videos and with my still photos.
Here comes some of those photos, starting with a pre-race preparations at Kaneohe Yacht Club:

Back in the day, I too enjoyed sailing the little 7' El Toros like the ones in the two photos above. There used to be an event called the Iron Man Race, where we actually sailed them out into the open ocean... for about 200 yards. Well, I felt that was too short to qualify as an Iron Man, so I sailed one across 32 miles of open ocean, about the distance from Molokai to Oahu. Good fun, though I was glad I had an escort boat, just in case. :o
Anyway. Pau for now. Hope you enjoyed seeing the kids.

It was a dark and stormy night, and somewhere a dog barked.
Well, kinda.
Yesterday was pretty dark and stormy, and I'm sure a dog was barking somewhere, but it wasn't "night." It was daytime, and the final race of the series. Very cloudy and rain squalls all around, but none hit us. Winds were about 15-18 knots at the start of the race and increased to 22-25, with a few gusts measured at 33 knots at the very end of the race.
That made it a tricky day to take photos, with bouncy boats (including mine) from the wind-chop waves and also with salt spray trying to attack my camera, but here we go:

How windy was it? This is what's left of my RC (Race Committee) flag yesterday, at the end of the series:

Pau.
The next boating photos will be sandbar trips, or Secret Cove, or perhaps Molokai or a trip around the east end to haul the boat out of the water in Honolulu and put on some new bottom paint, and maybe a series of photos of old junked and derelict boats around the island... but best of all would be seeing any kine boat photos from you experts who contribute to that other photo thread!!!

Great shots again Likanui! Do you know what the significane of "Bucket Tom" is?
I was down at Aloha Tower today and took some pics of the ships and boats. I dont know that these exactly qualify as boating photos, but here's few.
I found this big propeller to be interesting. As I studied it, it became clear that it took some amazing skill to create. Apart from being functional, it's a work of art.

I was amazed at how they were able to park these three ships so perfectly.

Here's the same boat, "Star of Honolulu", from a different angle. Falls of Clyde is to the left.

This big cruise ship is "Radiance of the Seas".

Here's the side view.

The Captain of this ship turned it around in a pretty short space in the little harbor there. I didn't see any tug boats pushing it.

Great shots again Likanui! Do you know what the significane of "Bucket Tom" is? Thanks, Jim. And the "Bucket Tom" was because of a prank that our friend Tom pulled on Miki`oi at the race before this one -- Tom, who owns one of the other boats, had tied a bucket off of Miki`oi to try to slow her down. :p
I was down at Aloha Tower today and took some pics of the ships and boats. I dont know that these exactly qualify as boating photos, but here's a few. Sure they qualify, and thanks for posting them! Nice shots.

I was amazed at how they were able to park these three ships so perfectly. Finding three identical buildings at which to park them is pretty amazing too!
The Captain of this ship turned it around in a pretty short space in the little harbor there. I didn't see any tug boats pushing it. Boats and ships with twin engines can easily do 360-degree turns in their own length. Ships also usually have bow thrusters and (sometimes stern thrusters) that push them sideways. Verrrry easy.
A basic explanation of bow thrusters is at this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bow_thruster), with some photos too.
Thanks again for the pix, Jim!

The next boating photos will be (...) and maybe a series of photos of old junked and derelict boats around the island. So today I ran some errands that took the 15-mile drive from Kaneohe to Hauula, and along the way I hopped out of the car a few times and snapped the shots below. Not all of the boats are "junked and derelict," but.

And right across Kam Highway, on Trout Farm Road... is that what I think it is, hiding deep in the rainforest? :

She originally was powered with twin 454s. That's sad to see such a fabulous boat abandoned like that, isn't it?

They aren't really great photos, just quick snapshots from today's 15-mile drive. Imagine what you good photographers could do!

I tried to reply to this earlier but hit some button and seemed to have lost it. If two post show up, I apologize.
I love the pics of the abandoned boats. Reminds me of back in the day when my husband and friend would salvage abandoned boats, fix them up and re-sell them. But not before we had our fun on them. Always have to re-christen them, ya know.........;).
Once, they brought up a 16 ft from the bottom of the bay. We named her Baby. Many fond memories. She ended up sinking again in a hurricane. They brought her up again and revived her once more. Another one that was salvaged was a 14 ft we named The Red Baron. My son learned on that boat. Somewhere I have a picture of him docking it all by himself. I think he was 10.
Jim - love the propeller pic. When we sold our last boat, my brother took the old propeller and made a clock out of it for us as a Christmas gift.
