Ho, it's Merrie Monarch time again already! I'll try to watch as much as I can but other commitments will probably keep me down to one night only - if I have to choose, it'll be the kahiko performances on Friday.

Love it. We tape it every year for my in-laws in Florida. I like the Kahiko too, but I'll watch everything if I can.

This year, a friend's kids will be performing, so we'll be watching specifically for them. (They're in "Halau Ke Kia'i A 'O Hula," led by Kumu Kapiolani Hao, performing both in Kahiko on Friday and Auana on Saturday.) Is there anyone you're specifically watching for?

KITV will be covering it live, starting tonight. You can also watch it streamed over the web through TheHawaiiChannel.com (http://www.thehawaiichannel.com/).

Did you get those scores from my Merrie Monarch Festival Web site? ;-)Nope! I was up at midnight like you, typing furiously, I guess. Though I did crib the halau names from another site... no way I was going to be able to figure 'em out between the emcee and all the screaming.

Now I know where to go for the fix next year... and save myself a few hours sleep!

Aue. Karen, now I see, it was from your site that I cribbed the halau and kumu names. I could follow Kimo's excited reading of the groups and scores on TV just fine, but I knew I wasn't going to transcribe the performers names correctly, so I "borrowed" them.

Bad form, I know, for both a "web guy" and a journalism grad. I should've known better, and at least given credit where credit was due. My apologies.

To all browsing through, Karen Sabog's Merrie Monarch Archive (http://www.kalena.com/merriemonarch/) is all you need. I shouldn't even have tried.

what was the halau with the small drums they tied to there legs in the middle? i thought they were the best. might have been the kahiko part, but i remember it was kinda modern sounding.

That was Olana A'i's halau. They placed 5th in kahiko.
