Just saw Jay Leno's monologue and he made a Zima reference. So, I'm trying to remember of any local products from the past which had its day. My dad gave me my first taste of Primo beer which I had to take the taste out of my mouth with Exchange grape juice. Has anybody been to the Hawaii's product and collectibles expo? Do they displayed products in mint condition from the Hawaii's past that would bring back memories?

There was an expo about pro wrasslin' in Hawaii with "Curtis the Bull" a couple of years ago. Was wrestling in Hawaii a topic on this board in the archives?
I have a Ripper Collins story. I heard Jim Leahey once say that behind the scenes that the bad guys in wrestling were nicer than the good guys off stage. As a small kid when I once attended a wrestling exhibition, and members of our club were putting away folding chairs, I saw Ripper Collins coming out of the dressing room, and he came over and was nice to me. Years later as a young adult, I met him again behind the counter at an adult shop. I was there because I wanted buy protection, and not at a busy public Longs. He talked to me like a H.S Health teacher. Here was this larger than life white guy in a loud Hawaiian shirt who played the bad guy of the condecending mainland tourist by purposely mispronouning towns in Hawaii coming to a gym near you. Talk about your completely different on and off stage image.

sorry, haven't been to the expo. but, your reference to "Exchange" grape juice got into my head. i mean their jingle is in my head and i can't get it out! "the exchange goes down, down, down and round, round, round in your tum, tum, tum, makes you smile...."

my first taste of primo was as a kid, too. dad, his friends and all the kids would be under the mango tree eating the green ones with shoyu, pepper and vinegar and chasing it down with primo beer while we were watching high school baseball from our back yard. ick. that's to the beer not the game.

dad would take us to watch wrestling at block arena. remember that? how 'bout the mighty midgets? sammy steamboat? the francis brothers and their dad? lord tally ho blairs (sp)? da missing link? whoa yah!

"the exchange goes down, down, down and round, round, round in your tum, tum, tum, makes you smile...."Indeed one of the catchiest local jingles of its time.

You know, there's a song out there that Exchange jingle was modeled from. I don't know the name, but it's really old. I'd say from the 50's. 99.5FM "The Jewel" plays it every now and then, but darned it, the DJ never says who it is!

My friend's nephew still has a gold mine of 1970's Japanese action hero toys, books, and other stuff. Kikaida, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Rainbow Man, Robocon. All of it.

He missed the "rush" when people were paying premium prices for the stuff on eBay in the early 2000's. At that time, he didn't wanna' part with it. Now the market is saturated, and it's not as valuable anymore. Maybe there'll be a second wave of demand for vintage Tokusatsu stuff a few decades down the road.

Well thank's for your time:oHi, this is Pomai.

Don't forget Collector Maniacs across the street.

I must say though, Toys 'N Joys has done a great job with their expanded Waialae location. Fantastic inventory, and an eBay'rs dream.

So much better than it was when they started as barely 2 narrow aisles of clutter to squeeze through, ala Tokyo style.

Thanks for your time. :D
