My eyes are sticky, my nose is stuffy, my throat is sore, and my chest is feeling kinda hurty. I'm sick, i think!! Me and my Sven seem to have caught a cold!! Meh!! It's not fair - now that we live in the tropics, can't we get some sort of exemption from colds? Maybe it's because of the vog? I dunno, but regardless, we're siiiick.

My sweet Sven keeps pushing the TheraFlu at me, which I refuse to drink! He insists it will make me better, but I'm convinced that the only thing to make me truly well is to fight back with my immune system, not meds.

Anybody have a good recipe for food that will kickstart my healing? I might have to hurt Sven if he keeps talking about TheraFlu! So far this morning I had a bowl of miso soup that I loaded up with onions, garlic, and pepper. Feeling somewhat healthier from that, but its gonna get boring really fast...

Help!! Being sick is AWFUL! Oh, and is something going around? I noticed a few snifflers at work yesterday.

Awe, pua ting.

I was gonna' mention Miso soup, but see you already tried that. Onions and salt and pepper in it, though? Next time try putting tofu, kombu (sea kelp) and green onion. That's the proper condiments and also very healthy. Especially the kombu, which is rich in iron and folic acid (vitamin B).

Cliché, but Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup is also good. Works for me.

When I was kid and got sick, my grandmother would sometimes give me fresh poi with warm milk poured on top, which was effective at settling the stomach. Sounds weird and kinda' gross, but it's really ono!

ditto to pomai's post. i recommend the chicken soup. well, i very rarely get sick. but, the last head/sinus cold i had, i used saline solution. puff, puff right into your schnozzola (spelling). it worked for me.

Thanks, kids, para, yo soy vegetariano, so chicken soup is out.

I did just stir up some ramen with green onions, extra garlic, and thai peppers. Sven is drinking so much TheraFlu that I'm starting to fear for his kidneys (or is it the liver that gets it?)

Komba! Mmmmm yummy! What can I use it in besides miso soup and sushi rolls?

ditto on the miso soup and the saline spray. do not get the saline spray with meds in it; just plain saline. (get this (http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100095&navAction=jump&navCount=3&skuid=sku2629675&id=prod2630238) or this (http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100095&navAction=jump&navCount=4&skuid=sku2501403&id=prod2501966), do not get this (http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100095&navAction=jump&navCount=5&skuid=sku351388&id=prod351387).) it's the wierdest feeling spraying liquid up your nose (and the taste afterwards is ick!) but the relief for the hour afterwards is worth it.

you can try this this recipe (http://wanderingchopsticks.blogspot.com/2007/12/soon-dubu-kimchee-chigae-korean-soft.html) or try this one (http://bunnyfoodfoo.blogspot.com/2007/05/recipe-korean-spicy-hot-tofu-stew-pot.html); just leave out the meaty parts. ;) kim chee tofu soup is absolutely the thing i crave when i'm sniffly sneezy coughy achy and want to feel better. i should say that the recipe tastes better if you get good kim chee from an asian store, like marukai or queen's market or don quijote, versus the stuff you can get at safeway. we prefer the kim chee from palama market next to don quijote in town or queen's market in kalihi. then again, you're all stuffed up so your taste buds are kinda whacked out right now, so kim chee from the grocery store should do for your needs. you can use kombu in that, too. kochujang (http://www.trifood.com/kochujang.html), if you are unfamiliar, can be found even in regular grocery stores in the asian food aisle.

i should admit here that i've never made my own kim chee tofu stew. korean restaurants aplenty near where we live, so i've never bothered. but bcs of you, i've found the above recipes, so maybe i'll try them sometime myself!

oh, another really simple semi-home made recipe is to take any ramen packet (preferably something like this (http://http://tastyisland.wordpress.com/2008/01/20/ramen-quest-chapter-4-shio/)) versus your top ramen variety and add loads of hot chili powder or slices of jalapeno and chopped garlic.

tea with ginger is also a good thing. it certainly helped me the last time i had a nasty cold. i like this one (http://www.republicoftea.com/templates/detail.asp?navID=1563) since it's made with redbush, or rooibos, tea, which is caffeine free (got it at down to earth). or you can make your own with this simple recipe (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_2695,00.html) from food network's sara moulton. of course, the simplest tea for colds is hot water, loads of lemon & honey. add mint if you have it.

It could very easily be your reaction to the vog, turtlegirl. My first experience with vog was the Jan. 1983 Kilauea eruption (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilauea). I was a mess...congested, sore throat, cough and the sinuses. OMG...the sinuses! I was casting out of the Ala Moana Hotel at that time and had to ask for the lowest floor available as the elevator ride put too much pressure on my sinuses. Yikes...the pain and the ear popping! Then, we were shooting in Kailua. I tried driving over the Pali but the pain and pressure even at that very low altitude were unbearable. I turned around and ended up driving around the east end of the island. Eventually we needed to fly outer island to finish the job. I bagged it at that point. There was no way I was getting on a plane!

I've not suffered from vog like that since. Thank goodness.

That's not to say you don't have a cold, esp. since Sven is sick, too. But all that sniffling from others while our islands are shrouded in vog may not be a coincidence.

Hope you feel better soon. I, too, would recommend chicken soup. Oh well!

oops! sorry! i forgot you were a vegetarian, turtlegirl. and, yeah, the kim chee/tofu soup that cyn recommends will do you some good. go over to the korean restaurant (forgot the name) across from the shack in enchanted lakes (your neighborhood) if you can't make the soup yourself. i really do enjoy their food especially the veggie buffet. i think it's served after 3pm?

go swimming at the beach? i used to see people getting out of the water and clearing their noses. must be the saline solution:eek:

This is a good suggestion. I remember, as a kid, when I'd get my annual, miserable summer cold, my parents always took me to the beach to bake in the sun (this was the 1940s & 50s...sunscreens, and the need for them, were unheard of) and go swimming for the theraputic effects of salt water.

Hot tea with plenty of lemon, honey and steeped with fresh garlic and ginger. The honey not only sweetens it, but helps to sooth an irritated throat.

Of course, if it gets really difficult to breath, gotta' bust out the nebulizer.

And I'll 3rd (or 4th?) the ocean. Salt water is very therapeutic. Works for me every time.

I'll 5th (?) the ocean as well. Nothing like salt water to bring all the nasties out of ya. I, too, would recommend chicken soup. Do you eat eggs and/or cheese? My famous get well soup - heat some broth (vegetable) and add a handful of orzo or rice. When that is done, pour a beaten egg into the boiling soup and stir with a fork. After you pour it into a bowl add a liberal amount of parm cheese.

Sorry to hear you and your hubby are getting sick, TG :(

I originally misread your topic title as "Get Well Receipts", like some sort of "pass it forward" thing :p

but I'm convinced that the only thing to make me truly well is to fight back with my immune system, not meds.

In general I dislike taking medication also. Sven just feels sad that you're miserable atm and he wants to fix you. If it makes the medicine go down any easier, the TheraFlu only treats your symptoms, and doesn't cheat your immune system out of a work out. Perhaps you just don't like the idea of chemicals flooding your body?

Anybody have a good recipe for food that will kickstart my healing? My mom used throw a towel over her head and breath in the steam from a pot of boiling lemon grass (cooled down to a safe temperature). Lemon grass seems easy to grow. When dry it makes excellent tinder for you pyromaniacs.

I always felt a bit naughty, puffing saline solution up my nose ;)

If you're feeling daring, you can try using a Netti Pot. *cringe*

Thanks so much everybody!!
I hope that we just have a bad case of vog, and will wake up feeling awesome tomorrow. But for now, we're crummy.
Kim Chee soup is something I've never tried but am looking forward to now that I know its in my neighborhood! Also checked out those recipes, Cyn, and once I have the energy to get to the store, I've got cooking to do!Can you believe that Sven woke up from his "sick nap" and made us JAMBALAYA with all the get well ingredients you can think of!??! With wild rice! I need to post this on "whats for dinner"! It was SO great! You're right MyopicJoe - he just wants to fix me - and he's really good at cooking!
Tomorrow, we're going to the beach, sick or well!!!!:)

2 oz. of rum(or your fav hard liquor) with 1 cup hot lemonade. Repeat every 4 hrs. Works for me. If it doesn't cure you, at least you'll feel good.
Also, zinc lozenges helps a sore throat, but suck on them after the hard lemonade, then pass out. All vegetarian, and no weird chemicals.

At the first signs of a cold I head for my very trusted naturopath. Here a needle...there a needle...everywhere a needle, needle! I become a human pin cushion! Accupuncture has thwarted 2 colds since I've been seeing her. Amazing.
