Anyone got their's yet? Did you get it early or on time?
Our original due date is the 28th, but heard direct deposits were being issued earlier than expected. So far, not.

Okay, my question wasn't answered by that thread. Again, if you already got your check, was it early, on time or late? Now, according to the IRS website, direct deposit should have been made on May 16th. Came and gone. Either they're running behind or they've switched us to snail mail, even though our refund was through direct deposit.

I still haven't gotten mine, and after searching online and getting zero help from the IRS website, I found this thread:
http://www.consumerismcommentary.com/2008/05/02/didnt-receive-your-economic-stimulus-payment-yet/
I filed via TaxAct and it appears that disqualified me from receiving the direct deposit.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for that link, Tiabla. Now, that gave me what I was looking for. :D We filed with the Blockheads and paid their tax prep fee from our refund. That means we won't be getting direct deposit, but a paper check, according to the report. Gotta wait till the middle of next month. :(
Mahalo to everybody who reponded. Looks like some did and some didn't. LOL

Ho, Ho, I got one, even though I didn't qualify by any of the published technical standards. Another year of no bloody federal income taxes at all, Woo Hoo!

I was scheduled to get mine in the middle of this month because my last two SSN digits were last AND I was getting a paper check. It came on June 29th.
I also got more than I expected...$118 more! :D

That's a good question. I tried making sense of it by reading that mailing they send out prior to getting the check where they do the calculations and such. I still don't get it...but I'm not complaining!

I got an extension and filed my taxes early June. I received a letter a couple of weeks later that I should expect my stimulus check on July 5 (paper, not direct deposit). The check arrived on July 8 even tho' I stimulated the economy on July 2! :o

I received my notice in June, stating my stimulus check was scheduled to be mailed out on June 13. So far, I have not received my check. I did move last month, but I made sure I filed my address change with USPS and the IRS. I called the IRS' Rebate Hotline but I just keep getting that message that says something like, "we are experiencing a high volume of calls." You can only check two things via the Hotline right now:
1. Eligibility
2. Payment schedule and amount (if you are eligible)
Once I entered my information, the automated voice system tells me to wait until July 11th before contacting them because they cannot do anything about it until that date. This was 2 weeks ago. I called today, and I heard the same thing. hmm.

That check finally arrived, but was almost $600 less than expected. :( Don't know what they did, but they figured that's what they "owed" us. Oh well, it'll still help with next months mortgage. I'm not going to give myself a headache trying to figure out what the IRS did to figure out what's owed. Not worth my time. Alot of people thought it was going to be a "standard" amount at different income levels. Whatever........<sigh>

Oooooh, DRE...I think $600 is worth a little investigation time. IIRC, on the letter from the IRS showing the date to expect your check, there's an inquiry phone #. The IRS, like all gov't. agencies/businesses/people, is capable of making mistakes. Possibly one phone call might answer your question?

DRE, can I just second what Sue said? One phone call, and at the very least, it might set your mind at ease in figuring out why you thought you'd get more.
And at the very most - they find an error in YOUR favor! Either way, should be good for you.

Crap! No sense calling. No mistake on their part. I just read some info on their website. Basically, I'm a low wage earner. I collect non-taxable/non-reportable income and am self employed. I work parttime to fullfill my obligation for the Fed bennies I collect. My reportable income is way low. Oddly enough, our tax liability was also low so we got put into the "low wage earner" category and got paid less for it. :(
Well, it's in black and white and can't say much against it now. Go figure, eh. I had to liquidate a few shares of my mutual fund to clear some bills and that extra income basically ruined our chances of receiving our usual hemangous tax return, but it still wasn't enough to put us into a higher bracket for the stimulus check. <sigh>
Oh yeah, no worries. We're going to nail them to the wall next year. No extra income for 08 and this stimulus check is also non-taxable. We'll be getting back our full share, and then some, come next tax season. Bwahahahahahaaa!

Umm, guys. Which federal office or agency do I call with regards to a decedant's stimulus check?
Leo Lakio

The Internal Revenue Service. Are you the fiduciary for the decedent's estate? That's who the IRS will likely want to deal with.

Yes. So, I should call the IRS before I do something with the check, right?

If you're the designated executor, you don't need to do so and if you're not, you have no grounds to do so. The check doesn't expire tomorrow, why is it burning a hole in your pocket?

Speaking of executor, is the person seeking to be one must initiate the [probate?] court proceeding for such an appointment, regardless of the estate's value?

Nope, not burning a hole. I just don't know what to do with it.

Is an accountant currently involved in this estate? If so, ask him/her what to do. If the decedent had gone thru estate planning then the check would probably need to either be deposited in his/her appropriate bank account or, if the estate has already been distributed to the beneficiaries then the check would need to be evenly divided among them. If this is an intestate (no will and probate court takes over) situation you probably should get some advice.

Not that I know of. The closest the decedent have for an accountant is a tax service.
Perhaps I should start there. Or Legal Aid.

Yep...I'd call the tax service. If they don't know the answer then, at the very least, they should know who you should contact.

If you're the designated executor, you don't need to do so ...Though you can only do so on behalf of the estate, not on your personal account. If they left behind creditors, they may be entitled to that money.
Are you the fiduciary for the decedent's estate?Yes.Then you, as fiduciary, are the one responsible for the tax concerns of the deceased. That doesn't mean the money is automatically yours, however. Check with the deceased person's attorney (or your own) to find out whether or not it goes to you - there may be inheritance tax issues in that case.
You definitely want to c.y.a. when dealing with the IRS. They can catch you years after the fact, and hit you with cumulative penalties.
There are many variable factors here, such as whether or not the person who passed away left a will (which usually names an executor - so I'm assuming they didn't, since you seek to fill that role - they died "intestate"), whether or not they received the check before or after death, etc. You really need to contact a professional, such as an attorney of your choosing, especially if you wish to initiate court proceedings to become executor.

I just checked a photocopy of my check, Random, and it's void after one year...so you have time to determine what needs to be done with it.
Please let us know what happens, as long as it doesn't breach any confidentiality stuff!

Actually, the decedent left behind a living trust, of which I was named as Trustee.
P.S. I guess I should start a new thread regarding Probate Court and Executor for another matter.

Back in the days when the AF was active as an attorney (certified to practice in both Washington State and Hawai`i jurisdictions), she did pro bono work through them every year.

So, no will? Bummer. Heirs? Without a will you'll likely need help. My mother's will was so old it wasn't even technically valid anymore - I had to try to find her 20-year ex (because his name was mentioned, if only to exclude him from inheriting, I had to go through legal notification procedures) and the witnesses (to comply with changes in the law and validate the will) - the lawyer was disbarred and briefly imprisoned for theft from a client, yadda yadda. Usually if assets are small enough, there's a quickie way to settle an estate (I had to sell a house). I used a Nolo Press book that got me through all the intricacies of probate in California - the best $50 I ever spent. Will the living trust assets avoid probate? Yes, that's the usual reason for a creating living trust. However, most every living trust process includes creating a simple pour-over will for assets excluded from the trust, such as cars, checking accounts and assets like this check and prorated rebates on car insurance. Are you sure there isn't one? All accounts with named beneficiaries can be claimed by the beneficiaries immediately, institutions only require a copy of the death certificate. These accounts are out of reach of the executor (especially if they have been claimed before an executor is court appointed). ;) Only undesignated assets, such as that check, need go through any sort of probate procedure. Now, if that check had been signed and sent for deposit to an account with a designated beneficiary, even if it got lost in the mail for a few weeks, you wouldn't have had to worry about it. ;)
