Born and raised in Hawaii, but can't swim for beans. Damn proud of it too. I never liked cleaning up the sand from my hair and car.

Well...so much for you and I getting married, Mike! :D
I've spent so much of my life swimming in the ocean then rolling in the hot sand, loving every grain! When I was a kid my mom made me rinse off the sand, including half the beach that was in my hair, with a hose in the garden. Brrr!

And my car? During the 90s I worked with a high profile celebrity who had not only an affinity for a certain make of car, but also owned 12 (I think) of 'em. I happened to have one...only one!...at the time. When I showed up at location his limo arrived at the same time and parked right next to me. He got out, and with a cheshire grin, asked if he could take a look. My car was the last year of a certain model and he knew that! How, I don't know, as they tended to all look alike to me! Anyway, in the back jump seat I had my beach chair, towel, fins and boogey board! The front drivers side floor had a layer of sand. It was old and was my beachmobile! His remark..."I see you're not a purist."!!! He ribbed me for the rest of that project, all in jest of course.

I won't sign in 'cuz I can swim...at least I used to be able to!

hahahaha...bummers. rejected twice in one day!

but since I didn't specify to where I mean local, you're local to wherever you originate.

born and raised, but can't swim well. i can FLOAT and do the back stroke (i guess this method could save my life?), does this count?:p

I can swim okay, but I don't really like to. I get winded after like 20 strokes, and there's nowhere to rest if in deep water. Float? Can't. For some reason, my legs sink and it pulls me down till just my eyes are sticking out of the water :o.

Funny, though, when I go scuba diving, my tank sinks (yeah, the big aluminum thingy on my back) and my feet go up. So all my friends laugh at me, because I look like a dead cockroach. :o

Turtlegirl try this...when you float on your back put your hands down just below and close to your hips. Cup your hands and make side to side figure 8 scoop like paddelings (mirror the motion of each hand so both hands go into the hips or circle out at the same time).

As long as you keep your hands up under your butt and do that paddle, it'll keep your legs from sinking.

Signing in! Born and raised here, but can't swim, though it's not without trying. I took swimming lessons in a summer program, in the Boy Scouts, in High School, and for P.E. at UH during my freshman or sophomore year, where my coach was Soichi Sakamoto, the former U.S. Olympic Swim Coach.

It seems that my form is OK (I look good for the first 10 to 15 strokes), but after that, when I get to the middle of the pool, my foot begins to drag me under. It's hard to swim in a sinking vertical position.

When I went to grad school on the mainland and some of my classmates discovered I didn't surf, they couldn't believe it. "Doesn't everybody in Hawaii know how to surf?" I explained: "I have a drowning problem." :D

Sand breaks down the fiber in carpets causing them to wear out before their time. Sand also scratches wood floors. Think sandpaper! I'm not sure if it negatively affects plumbing. I'd think it would just wash right thru a drain pipe...but I don't know for sure.

I don't really know, but my guess is there's no real damage to the pipes themselves. I worry about pipes getting clogged if there's a U-bend in the pipe, but who knows.

If we had a nice outdoor shower, it wouldn't be so bad. It would be nice to have a POS beach car too.

I'm not a local but I'm still here so that counts yeah?

I can doggie-paddle, and I can float and tread water, but I can't do the "real" swimming thing, and I don't like being where I can't touch land. I never liked the slides at the water park that would plunge you down into the pool of water at the end -- I tend to panic underwater. And yet I enjoy surfing and scuba diving and playing in the big waves.

It's definitely not from a lack of exposure. My family practically lived at the beach in the summer, my parents love to swim laps and such. I just never got it.

Or hold our heads under water until we bubble over.

I was raised on Oʻahu. So what's your theory? I want to see if it holds water. :)

Ok...back on topic...

Over here, kids go to the pool with the school once a week from about the age of four and nobody gets out of it without learning to swim.

Could it be a generational thing since today the young ones have so many activities to choose from where as before it was simply "we go beach"...even on Oahu.;)

My Oʻahu Theory about the Nonswimmerate:

Not enough accessible swimming shoreline per capita.

Not enough parking = not enough beach time.

Easier to stay home or go shopping.

kani-lehua
June 7th, 2008, 02:49 PM
hm? i don't know if i can agree with you, pm. small kid time we went to the beach a lot (dad's idea) because during that time PUKA shells were the rage. and, granny (mom's mom) would want us to gather limu down at 'ewa beach (that was when there was an abundance of the delicacy). i think i'm just afraid of the water. just like achow, i almost drowned, but only once. there definitely won't be a second time unless i'm on a flight to vegas and the plane crashes in the ocean--goners for sure--no can swim, but can float.:D

good theory about the shopping, though. love, love, love to shop. maybe that's why i worked in retail for soooo many years.

Were backyard swimming pools uncommon in your neighborhoods growing up?

There goes my theory about my sister being the only Hawaiian over the age of 10 who can't swim. :D

Kani, you better than my sister, she can't even float. She fell off a canoe once (small kid time) and almost drowned. Instead of wanting to conquer the water she decided she didn't like it no more. :p I, on the other hand, could spend half of my day in the ocean, everyday.

Born and raised on Oahu, can't swim. I even took swimming lessons. I remember my friend trying to teach me how to float on my back, and I couldn't even do that! I kept sinking.

I know it's all in my head, tho. I am deathly afraid of what's below the surface.

Born and raised on Oahu. My Nanny (maternal grandmother) could not swim, so she sent us to swimming lessons to teach her. It worked.

From swimming lessons at McCully pool, I followed my sister to the Hawaii Swim Club coached by the one and only Soichi Sakamoto. Although I earned some ribbons, I wasn't interested in competition swimming.

At age 8 I rode my first wave at Keyholes (Ala Moana) and was addicted to riding waves. That same year while swimming in Kauai, I almost drowned. My Dad rescued me, I cried on the sand next to my Mom and she told him to throw me back in so I wouldn't be afraid. It worked.

Noe was part of her high school swim team, and long boards at Kewalo's.

J is 4 and he charges the shore break, he's starting swimming lessons this month.

I too cannot sign because I can swim, but encourage everyone that it's never too late...besides ride at least one wave in your lifetime, even if it's on a bodyboard at the shorebreaks of Sherwoods -- just as exhilarating!

this hawaiian will be more than happy to stay on shore:p. nope, never did overcome the fear of the ocean. have mostly gotten over the fear of heights (pats self on back. well, someone's gotta do it;)).
