View Full Version : Stupidest People Of The Day Award

Ron Whitfield

While down by OOOC today, a car comes wizzing by with the driver's little dog completely out of the drivers side window, balancing it rear paws on the door's top edge and it's front paws on the exterior rear view mirror.
The driver did have 'concern' for his pet, as he had a grip on the dog's tail.
Which means only one hand on the wheel and his mental, sight, and physical focus on somethings other than driving.

This is the kind of person that needs to be pulled over, arrested, car impounded, license revoked, and dog taken away for it's safety.
And maybe the driver pounded for being so stupid!

I hope this award can't be topped by anyone elses sighting of even worse stupidity.

The whackos are the ones who skip around naked protesting fur for PETA, the hardcore environmentalists who would protest an aluminum smelter, and those who would choose to do nothing if a vest bomber blows up a cafe full of women and children, as long as it's not in their town. Oh, and don't forget the folks who think racial separatism is a good thing.

Obama and Clinton do not qualify as whacko. And only a few on this board actually qualify. It's the fringe I'm talking about. The folks who cling to cognitive dissonance like religion.

Ok, maybe it was a few decades ago. But I think it's illegal, all the same.

Wow...whatta memory you have! If I'm thinking of the same horrific incident (I don't remember the dog), it happened during the early 90s. IIRC, the mom was riding a bike while "towing" her kids who were in a wagon. The roadside memorial was set up for at least a decade. It could still be there, for all I know.

Yeah, that's the one. And the mom was so messed up physically that she was unable to have any more kids. If I remember right, it was because of a lady who was driving with a dog in her lap.

(I'm not sure my memory is so good as is the urge to remember every single thing I can about Hawaii)

ed mcmahon was unable to work for a year and a half bcs of a broken neck. his home is hard to sell, not only bcs of the current market, but bcs his neighbors include celebrities who attract hordes of paparazzi. additionally, he gets no money from dvd sales of the tonight show eppies.

I think people's incredulity over Ed McMahon's problems are basically rooted in the expectation that he likely made millions of dollars way back in the 70's. I don't know if that's true, but I'd guess he did alright over all those years on the Tonight Show. After doing that well, to then be in financial trouble and needing to work at age 85? somehow suggests he may have been a poor money manager.

Work yourself to the bone and all you get is bony fingers. Didn't we used to pity the poor Russian worker?...and now the American one is no better off...tired, running just to keep your head above water, forgetting babies in a hot car from fatigue, being evicted after one month, no job security, no family social help....no disability insurance...

Didn't we used to pity the poor Russian worker?...and now the American one is no better off...tired, running just to keep your head above water, forgetting babies in a hot car from fatigue, being evicted after one month, no job security, no family social help....no disability insurance...Yeah, but you know what the American Character is often like - it's so much easier for us to be fooled into thinking we're the best at everything, that the rest of the world is somehow inferior to us, and that "they" all want what "we" have.

It's a colonial mentality that doesn't die off easily. And it's hard to remove the blinkers when you don't even know that they are on. But some of us know otherwise (I think you are among 'em).

The decline and fall of the American Empire is as inevitable as it was for all past empires, and it's hard to recognize that it's already here and too late to stop. So you grab onto your potato sack, sit down and hang on for the ride. It's somebody else's turn to be on top of the slide.

So to keep it on topic: might the "stupidest people" be those who refuse to see beyond their little fiefdoms, worrying only how the increasing gas prices will make it more and more expensive to fill up their gas-sucking hogs?

I was wrong to include Ed McMahon in my post, but his name was in the news recently. It sounds like he's getting screwed from receiving royalties from the Tonight Show DVD sales. He seems like a good guy after I read that he was a marine pilot who fought in the Korean War. He deserves only respect for fighting for our country. It's easier to change a no to a yes than it is to change a yes to a no. It's gonna be real hard for the world to downsize. And some of the world (ahem) has had it good for a looong time and has no idea.

Just look at those Spaniards...their truckers went on strike cause they didn't like the high gas prices (they pay just a tad less than we do, about ten bucks a gallon)...and already after four days of strikes their supermarkets are empty, prices have doubled, and, according to friends who went to Spain yesterday, 'people are acting funny'.

And this is in relatively 'good' times.

The Brits began their strike just this morning.

Now, i doesn't have to be so hard as all that, this downsizing. The first thing ya have to be able to do is to get rid of a few words or phrases...such as...

I deserve it
I earned it
It's always been this way
Nobody's gonna tell me what to do
But this is ....... (insert the name of your country here)
They can't do that
But this is our way of life
This is a free country

The second thing to do is to remember all those history lessons in highschool with just a bit more humility....yes, it CAN happen here.....and especially go back and review the notes on 'Manifest Destiny'. Hint: Good times move eastwards.

Failing that (or in spite of that), you could go for the religious angle. Today's world does make the Bible and the Koran look a bit less like fiction.

Your choice. But something's gotta give, sooner or later. This is where I come in with my old faithful, perennial, prep thread, of course...of which parts will do for things other than a pandemic (like when shelves are empty and prices have doubled and people are acting 'funny').

Hint: Spain is not a backwards thirdworld country. We go there all the time and it looks just like an other modern country. No illiterate peasants or lack of proper sanitation (well, they do have Turkish toilets http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squat_toilet ).

we were driving on kapahulu towards waikiki when we passed a red chevy or ram blocking two lanes of traffic (including a city bus) just so he could turn left on kapahulu. said red truck then sped up to overtake four cars, including ours, to bully its way into the rightmost lane that turns onto ala wai boulevard (forcing the car in front of us to stop short just a few feet before the turn). we watched the red truck jerkily speed up, screeching its tires, while weaving through traffic without signaling many times, almost causing several accidents. his erratic driving was even more of a concern because there were both a motorcycle rider and a bicycle rider not far ahead of him. we feared he would cause a chain reaction accident resulting in some bad injuries...or worse.

i was just about to pull out my cell phone to call the truck in to the cops but then eric and i noticed a police car just twenty feet ahead of the truck, in the far left lane. the truck driver obviously noticed the police car too, because all of a sudden, he started lagging back and driving like normal people do, and made sure he stayed in the far right lane. in fact, he purposely hung out at the stop light before.

unfortunately for the driver, and probably to the chagrin of his two passengers, the driver of a mustang convertible rolled up next to the cop while we were at a stop light just before niu street. it was clear, by his hand motions, that he was ratting out the truck driver. we were right behind the cop as this happened, so i rolled down my window, cheered loudly and pointed to the red truck as the driver tried his best to continue slinking past toward the right turn onto mccully.

the cop put on his blinkers, and just like that, he crossed over two lanes to follow the red truck. we had to continue in the opposite direction toward ala moana so we didn't see the end result, but boy! it was such a satisfying relief to watch the blue and white tail that truck! what selfish dickwads!

Okay, it coulda been me or any of the rest of you who don't follow the rules of the road to a tee. Complain about dat guy, ignore your own infractions, eh.Hmmmm... first of all, if I was going to drive a Dodge Ram, I wouldn’t buy a red one. It attracts about 50 times more attention then say, slate grey. Secondly, unless you’re a fisherman hauling your motorboat to and from home daily, who needs a V10? I know they have smaller engines available, but let’s get real: you buy a Ram for the V10. Thirdly, you avoid being a road hazard when you drive a Honda Fit. It was made to actually fit in the lane of urban traffic, and weave much more gracefully then say...a huge @ss Dodge Ram. And guess what? I’d probably drive a lot more carefully, because of fear of who would lose in a collision...with a huge @ss Dodge Ram!

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mio5fTKqWgM) made me laugh.

you weren't there, so you have the ignorant luxury of dismissively minimizing the potential danger on the road at that time because of that driver's actions.

i was there, so unlike you, i'm not yammering out of my lower alimentary canal. approximately 60 people from kapahulu ave and ala wai blvd would have been or were darned tootin happy the truck driver, upon finding himself in the vicinity of a blue & white, got scared into driving like a normal, law-abiding citizen instead of the quisquilian of a jackanapes that he is.

:p i'm colorfully multilingual--i remember some high school russian, too. how's this: anyone who takes up the defense of the red truck driver = большое глупое дерьмо.

p.s. if that was a dodge ram last night, i can guarantee the guy wasn't driving a v-10. clearly, he didn't have the balls nor the brain befitting that kind of power. he was all about mashing the gas, puckering on the brake, and assuming everyone would give way out of concern for self-preservation. in fact, i doubt he'd be able to take a turn properly even given this lil thing (http://jalopnik.com/360018/2008-john-cooper-works-mini-cooper-s-revealed).

I wrote in generality to show how some people think that by yelling, it would cover their stupidity.
My example happened at a supermarket parking lot where a guy in a SUV with all tinted windows entered the lot without looking and almost hit me walking out of there. He rolled down his tinted window and started yelling at me. I was puzzled and didn't understand why that the person whose fault it was started shouting. When a guard came over and wanted to know what happened, he quickly walked into the market while still yelling stuff.

I can dig it. Some clown flew out of another parking lot the other day, straight across the sidewalk as I came up to a semi blind spot on my bike, lucky to stop in time, as I have no brakes..., and he was gone before I could get more than a few choice woids thru his window.

This is a common occurrance by drivers, like the crosswalk couldn't possibly have pedestrians.

Driving was one of those. It would've been different had he been an unsafe driver. So, it was easy to just let him make his own mistakes and pay his own prices! If I needed to be somewhere that was time sensitive...I drove. He was ok with that.

Last day to file.

Office of Elections is busy.

I checked the Website.

Candidate Filing Report (revised 7-21-2008)

My name is listed as VASQUEZ, ALYN LA

It's supposed to be listed as VASQUEZ-DELA CERNA, Lynn LA.

The woman was rude and sarcastic. She told me I must have initialized the papers when I filed. It is my "legal" name. I told her NO! It is not my legal name and I did not initialize that name to be on the ballot.

My legal name is Alyn L.A. Vasquez -Dela Cerna.

Eh...moa easy if they wen put Auntie Lynn like I told dem to put but dey neba like.:p

I dated a man for quite awhile who wanted absolutely no help with anything involving his driving. As long as I know up front, I'm fine with that. I can keep thy trap shut! So, one night we're headed to a party. I know exactly where it is which is in the opposite direction from where he's aimed the car. I start filing my nails! He's lost, getting frustrated and pays no attention to his speed. I decide to take a little nap! Within minutes he gets a ticket. A few minutes later he pulls into a gas station to use the pay phone. Yep...he called the host to ask for directions! It was best I didn't offer and it's a really good thing I wasn't in labor! :D
It depends if it's his friends or her friends at the party. He might pretend to be lost because that cuts down on the "yapping" that will go on with her friends. It's called "yapping" when he's not fond of the people talking. That might be an example of a clever guy who plays dumb. Women don't play dumb to get their way. Do They?

True, but as vehicle operators, we have to yield to them. After all, a car can be used as a weapon so easily.

What if the weapon is in the car in the form of Danica Patrick? Danica Patrick had a girlfight with the other sultry, long-haired ex-model race car driver after a near-hit accident on the racing track. That's Hot.

You called that a fight? There was no bra-snapping, clothes-tearing, face-ripping smackdown.

Just some uptight supermodel wannabe throwing towels at a legit racer, albeit female.

Those were OUR friends who both hosted and attended the party! That said, I met the hosts thru my BF, however they'd moved and I'd been to the new house once while BF hadn't! In addition, I was willing to look at a map. BF wasn't!

BF wasn't the type at all to pretend to be lost to avoid yapping or to play dumb. Do I play dumb to get my way? You betcha. That's how I get so much help with my computer! Oh wait...that's not playing dumb. That IS dumb! :D

The setting - yesterday at Honolulu Hale
The reason - last day of primary voting
The scene - in line at the elections window, waiting to verify voter eligibility, behind one woman endlessly blabbing to the clerk about nothing/everything, I'm in a rush and the poll line is very short.
Cut to the chase - the gab fest finally ends, I'm eligible, and the poll line is now out the door...
Roll credits - censored

No vote for you!, Miss I get paid for nothing

That would be me a few days ago coming home from work. I had an episode of road rage.

There's a lot of road improvements going on at Kapolei near the Advertiser building. I usually carpool so I don't know all the lanes very well since I'm not usually driving, but the lanes are uneven and not clearly marked. I made a right turn onto the road leading to the freeway to Honolulu, but because the lanes aren't marked very well, I turned wide and the oncoming car on the left lane honked its horn. So I deliberately turned my head to look at the driver as he came up even to me and gave the driver 'the eye'. Good think I had my sunglasses on because I think it hid my eyes. Anyway, I sped away but the lanes curved so again I took the turn wide and the car honked its horn at me again! I was mad so I made a gesture and sped off.

First of all, I know I am damn lucky that nothing happened. The driver could have been a crazy person that could have chased me, and I thank God that he wasn't. He just continued on his way to the Leeward side. Secondly, I know I was wrong. I think that's why I was mad. I was mad more at myself because I knew better, but I have no idea why I did this. Its not my nature to look for trouble. Must have been the long day at work or something.

So I deeply apologize to the driver. If you read these forums - I am so sorry for being stupid. :(

That area is a mess right now. I, too, had a driving faux pas last week-end when I tried to make a left turn at that Advertiser intersection where I've turned left many times before. 'Cept, this time, I didn't notice the no left turn sign! Directly behind me, the driver of one of those huge semi construction rigs gently tapped his horn! Thank gawd it was a gentle tap! :o

1) HT posters who put up trollish loaded-full-of-dung "questions" that are clearly intended just to stir up flame wars, rather than actually learn or discuss or debate something of value.

2) Other HT posters who take their bait, foolishly thinking they might actually convince those in category 1 of any other perspective.

So to those in category 1 to whom I never seem to reply - it's because I don't wish to find myself in category 2 again.
