No, but they're very brave to enter the "Bird's Nest" without a mask.

Yes, they called the stadium a "bird's nest."

With all the fireworks they burst at the ending of the opening ceremonies, I am sure that added to their air quality problems... at least for tonight and maybe tomorrow. Still the opening was quite spectacular, and generally I don't watch the Olympics.

My understanding is that they are no longer using 'waterboarding" as torture at Guantanamo Bay, they just make the prisoners watch the opening of the Olympic games in slow motion, time and time and time again. Evidently a few of them, the jihadists, have already cracked, and a few of the gaurds who were supervising the whole ordeal are undergoing psychaitric evaluation for over exposure to the opening procedures.....Yea, China, lead paint in kids toys, the whole deal with gluten and chemical additives in pet food, wonder how many people's pets died from that????? Another chemical they produced for a prescription drug, lots of people dead from that, K-Mart and Wal-Mart wouldn't exist without cheap Chinese made crap, none of the products made there are clearly labeled as being made in China, Communist China, but you can't buy a Havana cigar in the U.S., because they're communist........Am I missing something???? I'ld be willing to wager that these Olympics will be the worst ever, and something will go wrong......

Aloha, lucky you live Hawaii

When the history of the 21st century is written, the growth and modernization of China will, I believe, be one of the most significant chapters.

The 2008 Olympics in Beijing may be the opening paragraph in that chapter. It was spectacular.

The pollution, poverty, corruption and injustice of China today cannot be downplayed. But it will, I hope, be a contrast for how far they will have come 92 years from now.

They have a long way to go, but they are moving faster than any country on earth.

I think this is a low point in world history.
Few countries (policy makers/enforcers) today deserve to be cut out from society as much as China. To give them the Olympics is a disgrace and a stain on all who participate.
Shameful.
The games havn't been worth a damn for decades any way, and China is again getting away with exibiting atheletes that are underage. Cheating, at their own hosted events. Such class. Such honor. So proud they are.

Though not directly related to the Olympic, tragedy struck for one of the American volleyball coach.

A deranged 47-year-old chinese man attacked two of coach's relatives, killing one man and injuring an American woman as well as the female Chinese guide, before killing himself.

China's using kindergartens now? Not that I should be surprised but... what else do you expect from them when their concept of a "harmonious society" -- for which they emphasize the Chinese character "harmony" during their opening ceremony performance -- includes quelling and silencing any dissension the government do or won't do.

Sports related ... the first gold is given to Czech Republic's Katerina Emmons for the woman's 10-meter air rifle competition.

Spain captured their first gold in the men's 254k mountain bike race (Samuel Sanchez).

South Korea captured their first gold in the men's 60kg judo competition (Choi Min-Ho).

Romania captured their first gold in the women's 48kg judo contest (Alina Alexandra Dumitru).

And US captured their first gold and bronze in women's saber fencing competition (Mariel Zagunis and Becca Ward).

Uh, yeah. China won two gold in the 48kg women's weightlifting and men's 10-meter air rifle. Never bothered to know their names.

No one can dispute all the various issues about China, but setting them aside for just one moment... I totally agree with TutuSue's comments that the Opening Ceremony was simply spectacular!
Some of the segments used 2,008 performers, and I was amazed when they noted that there were no marks on the floor to indicate where to go; simply precision movements. Wow.
The drumming segment was my favorite (again, with 2,008 drummers). I'd watch that again, for sure. Anybody know if that's on YouTube yet?

I don't know. The ceremony reminded me of a 60 Minutes video segment where Ms Albright from then-Clinton Administration visited North Korea and were treated so such a "spectacular" show of mass synchronous movements. It eerily creeped me out.

The only spectacular performance is the women's volleyball match between USA and Japan. Japan was strong in the beginning and were steady in their game, but sluggish USA managed to squeezed out a win in the third and final game. A lot miscommunication between players and their defense need improvement.

I am a sucker for the Olympics. Give me any event; just put it on the screen and I'll watch it. I especially like the swimming, cycling, volleyball, and basketball events, but also dig soccer and track. I'm not into women's gymnastics, steeplechase, or synchronized swimming. Great opening ceremony; I didn't think the torch-lighting was as cool as the flaming arrow in Barcelona in '92, but this was probably a strong second.

The AF is, much like Scrivener, an Olympi-holic. She'll watch as much as she can (and agrees with Scrivener's flaming-arrow assessment), and while we don't have all the digital-cable multi-channel options, we can watch NBC and the Canadian CBC coverage - the latter being in real-time, and nearly constant coverage.

It appears to be at the stadium and was due to hazards from filming live from a helicopter. So is that considered fake? I dunno.....

The faked fireworks were actually set-off at the stadium, but because of potential dangers in filming the display live from a helicopter, viewers at home were shown a pre-recorded, computer-generated shot. It sounds dishonest, but I'm not sure it's such a terrible thing.

Great events in the pool yesterday, especially for the 4x100 Men's Free. That was one of the best races I've ever seen, and the final leg was a thing of beauty. This is one of the glamour events, so it was especially nice to see the gold come home. And Phelps's chance at eight golds is still alive.

As for the mistakes on the uneven bars in the women's gymnastics, I think they were just lapses. The ladies were very good otherwise.

I wonder if anyone can still make the case that the ages of their women's team are still questionable, especially under the new underage rule. Bela Karolyi once spillled that government can falsify documents for their prized athletes, a practice even used during his coaching period in Romania.

Kudos for swimmer Michael Phelps for winning a total of 11 gold medals, acquiring two tonight for the 200 meter butterfly and now the men's 4x200 medley.

I read that whereas Mark Spitz was viewed by his teammates as cocky and competitive, Phelps is very sociable and well-liked by all of his teammates. I'll confirm what you read about Mark Spitz. He was (and still is) an avid sailboat racer, and I raced against him dozens of times over the years in a regular Wednesday night series. He rapidly became very unpopular, because after almost every single race he would file an official protest against one boat or another, forcing them to go into a room with the race committee to resolve things. Competitive? Over the top. Cocky? Oh yeah. Popular among his fellow racers? Nope.
Except for the fact that he lost almost every protest. :p
(For you sailors in the group, he had a Hobie 33 monohull back then. Not sure what he's sailing now. Did you root for the one who look like a midwestern American or the exotic American one with the Eastern European name? Are you reading this Cokie Roberts?

Has anyone else noticed how many gastrointestinal problems suffered by the athletes are being reported by the announcers? It seems to me that almost every event has at least one or 2 athletes who either are or recently have suffered an "upset stomach"/"gastrointestinal problems"/"stomach bug"/"food poisoning". Dang...I can't imagine feeling that rotten and having to perform at Olympic levels.

I'm impressed that none of the athletes I've seen interviewed have made any excuses if they didn't win. None of them said they were injured or feeling lousy and thus didn't win or score in the top. A couple have said they were injured or not well but thems the breaks when you're an athlete.

Earlier today I heard one gold medalist mention that she had food poisoning 2 or 3 days ago. Within the last hour I heard mentioned that the Aussie swimmer, Grant Hackett, had awakened early this morning with a stomach upset. He had to swim the 1500m heat. Ouch! The announcers talked about his illness during the race. There was no post-race interview. Phelps wasn't feeling well during one of his events. That didn't stop him, needless to say!!! Adrenaline is amazing! :D

I agree, Adri, I've not heard any excuses either. I did hear, either yesterday or today, that one athlete dropped out of his event due to illness. Can you imagine? All that training and qualifying only to get too sick on the day of the event to participate? Whatta heart breaker.

I don't recall the plethora of reported illnesses I've heard about during the past week in previous Olympics.

That's why star pro athletes have their own personal chef. There have been cases of food poisoning by the room service for their home team against a visiting star player.

Travellers are always warned about the food and drink in China. The athletes no matter how careful are bound to get some sort of ailment from the water and food in China. Probably from brushing thier teeth or something. All the advancements the Chinese have made and they still don't have clean drinking water.

When I watch the gymnastics, I wonder about the spotters. Especially for the women in the high bars. What, exactly, would they do if one of the women fell off? It seems that the spotters would only possibly get bonked on the way down and not prevent the gymnast from falling.

Oh yeah. I wondered if he deliberately chewed her out in front of the cameras to try to humiliate her and if he was so unaware that he didn't realize that it would only document what a complete idiot and jerk he is.

Random: I don't claim to understand why gymnastics no longer allows ties when apparently other olympic sports still allow ties but as I understand it, the issue is not so much with the tiebreaking procedure (to determine the scores, drop the top and bottom scores for each gymnast, in the event of a tie, drop the next bottom score for each gymnast and hopefully that breaks the tie) as it was with the judging by judges who may not know what they're doing (to avoid the conflict of a judge from the same country as a contestant).

That could also add to the controversy. Still both issues should be reviewed so when the gymnasts gather in London by 2012, either the tie-breaking procedure be overhauled or eliminated, and qualified, tested, competent judges with no conflict of national interest are in placed.

...the IOC is going to investigate gold winning gymnist He Kexin's age.
If they actually do a true investigation, and find that she is underage and that the Chinese gov. is responsible for the deception, it will be the tarnishing downfall of these Olympics, and for what China will be remembered, all for needless cheating.

The Chinese gymnasts look sooooooo young it's almost scary. When I first saw them early on during the Olympics I just shook my head. There's no way on this earth many of them have even reached their teen years much less 16. But, how does one investigate a possible government deception if the government has knowingly issued new birth documentation and trashed the old, accurate documentation? Inquiring minds wanna know! ;)

And a HUGE WAY TO GO to Kerri and Misty! Whatta match. I was hooting and hollering so loud that I met my new neighbor! :o Ho, da cute! :)

It's not so nervous to watch when you know the score and isn't shown live. KHNL had the USA-Cuba women's volleyball match live after the late night news yesterday. Even though the match went 3-0 in games, the Cuban players all look like terminators.

I got this in an e-mail (and I actually heard #3 myself!):

Here are the top nine comments made by NBC sports commentators so far during the Olympics that they would like to take back:

1. Weight-lifting commentator: 'This is Gregorieva from Bulgaria . I saw her snatch this morning during her warm up and it was amazing.'

2. Dressage commentator: 'This is really a lovely horse and I speak from personal experience since I once mounted her mother.'

3. Paul Hamm, Gymnast: 'I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father.'

4. Boxing Analyst: 'Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them really that serious.'

5. Softball announcer: 'If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again.'

6. Basketball analyst: 'He dribbles a lot and the opposition doesn't like it. In fact you can see it all over their faces.'

7. At the rowing medal ceremony: 'Ah, isn't that nice, the wife of the IOC president is hugging the cox of the British crew.'

8. Soccer commentator: 'Julian Dicks is everywhere. It's like they've got eleven Dicks on the field.'

9. Tennis commentator: 'One of the reasons Andy is playing so well is that, before the final round, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them... Oh my God, what have I just said?'
