Anyone a fan of her artwork?
Can you recommend other Hawaiian artist?
I'm looking for some paintings (prints) for decoration in my home.

Can't say I'm a fan, but you could do a lot worse. My family has a signed print from DHY, framed at the store I was employed by shortly after high school. It's nice. Not especially thought-provoking, but pretty to look at and it doesn't dominate a room. I admired Hansen-Young for running for mayor several years ago because she felt not enough attention was being paid by the city to the homeless problem. She opened up her property for homeless people to stay at, temporarily, until something was worked out for Aala Park's tent city. Or something. Memory's a little hazy.
For art, a lot depends on what you're going for. If she turns you on, I might also recommend Gary Reed (http://www.garyreedart.com/) or Herb Kane (http://herbkaneart.com/), two other local favorites. I personally sold at least a hundred prints of Dean Howell's Chinaman's Hat, which Howell has since turned into a book, and while it's probably not great art, it's interesting and nice to look at. I'd hang that in my house any day.
But then, the most arty things adorning my own walls right now are framed album covers of Styx's Paradise Theater (front AND back, of course) and Journey's Captured. Yeah, I'm single. Ask me some time about my Root Beer Wall.

What art store did you work in? I was at The Art Board in the late 80s for a spell.
I found DHY art to remind me of Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony stuff. We sold a lot of Chinaman's Hat, and works by David Lynn Nelson and Kim Taylor Reece and I HAVE NO IDEA WHY! Well, art is very subjective, that's for sure.

Scriv, thanks for the link for Herb Kane! This is the first I've seen it; it's beautiful. I love the history recorded in the paintings.

I worked at what was then called Poster Express (Pearlridge, Phase II under the monorail) and later named Rainbow Art and Frame.
Do you know the name of that photographer whose subjects were the little Japanese kids? She did the Kanraku Imin poster and...a few others commemorating significant Japanese-American events. I can't remember her name. Joy something?

I wish I could help. I can remember greeting cards and smaller 5x7 prints we'd sell, with a little boy in a headband, others, and they were finished in sepia tone. Those seemed to be more to the point.

Darn it. Those sound exactly like the prints I'm talking about, only not in sepia but in b&w. Anyone else?

More important, cabanalane, is your impression of DHY's art. If you like it, go for it! I bought a couple of her prints when I lived in a home that really fit her style.
I also like Pegge Hopper (http://www.peggehopper.com/prints.html). If you like color and whimsy then you might like Rosemary Prussing. Hmmm...no google references. Maybe I've spelled her name wrong. Sorry. Another artist I like, again with a bit of whimsy, is Al Furtado (http://www.furtadoartgallery.com/). And another one is Yoshio Hayashi, a local artist who, once again, I could find no google reference except for the wrong name sakes! I, too, like Gary Reed's art a lot.

I personally like an artist whose first name is Carli (sorry, can't remember her last name - senior moment I guess). She does a lot of watercolors and also whats called "gicle" pronounced "gee-clay". Her pieces are mostly florals but they are beautiful and if I had the $$$, I would have them all over my house. Her originals are definitely not cheap but the prints are very reasonable.

She was actually a state rep. during the late 1960s, back when she was still "Diana Hansen."
Her artwork certainly looks unique, but not everyone's cup of tea. I personally wouldn't hang any of her works in my living room.
Surprised that no one mentioned perhaps the two most successful painters with Hawaii ties. Robert Wyland and Margaret Keane.

YES! thank you so much for filling in my blank spot - I really do love her work and used to have a screen saver program that she put out. Anyone who likes tropical scenes, especially florals, should take a look at her work.
you can check out some of her work at

Yes, that's it. Thank you! I hate baby photography, but those are some cute photos. Her website is here (http://www.denisemarieluko.com). She's apparently no longer living in Hawaii.

That little sumo boy card was a great seller. These were very well done. They really captured personality.
