View Full Version : Honolulu Mayor's Race 2004 - Chapter 2

July 21st, 2004, 07:36 AM
With the filing deadline passed, it's time to roll over our old thread (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=5) and start the conversation anew, this time with a poll that lists all ten candidates who have formally filed to run for Honolulu Mayor, and with an open invitation to voters andcandidates to share their thoughts on the race, and on the priorities and positions of those running.

Bainum will get my vote... despite the painfully ridiculous "broom" TV ad he's running now. Second choice would be Frank Fasi. :)
Of course, that's only my mood today... As we get to know the candidates over the next few weeks (notably Lillian Hong and Terrence Teruya, who've been kind enough to chat with us here), they may climb the charts.
The two things I'm pretty sure won't change in my mind, though, are that Frank Fasi would be too much fun to not consider, and that pretty much anyone else will get my vote before Mufi Hanneman.

What makes Bainum supporters want to vote for him? What are the issues that set Duke Bainum apart from the other candidates? Without referring to a Bainum website or newspaper link, I would like to know in your own words why Mr. Bainum is your choice for mayor? What are the major issue points that you and the candidate agree on?

A big chunk of my rationale for voting for Duke Bainum is not issue related -- it's a more subjective, personal evaluation of his character, intelligence, and relevant knowledge and experience. I think less about his position on BRT than I do his overall understanding of it, for example. That's not to say I'd wish he'd change his mind on something if he felt differently than I did, but more that I trust he'd give all sides a fair listen. If and when he comes to a decision, I'd expect him to be confident in it and stick to it.
Another big chunk is that he's not the other candidates. (Specifically, theother leading candidate.) Indeed, I'm not anywhere near a fan of Duke Bainum - I still can't get over those brooms - but have come to the same spot most do in deciding how to vote: he's the most palatable out of a buffet of at best mediocre options.
Both Bainum and Hanneman are saying the exact same things about returning to the basics, shoring up fundamental city services and priorities instead of vanity projects like Harris' ridiculous visions and fantasies, and about integrity, yada yada yada. All things being equal, then, I'm just more confident that Bainum will actually try to do it.

To pzarquon and Mel,
I am so happy you two are so fast on the speed to make the poll and starting the discussion.
I am very happy to find out some one, our member, voted for me. I can vote for myself, just like I can vote for myself in the real election, right?
As to the broom, I did a TV program on it. I specified it is not the city employees are doing all these wrong things. It is the boss. If Dr. Bainum
wins, Mayor Jeremy Harris will be gone when he becomes the Honolulu Mayor on January 2, 12:01 p.m. Dr. Bainum does not need a broom to sweep clean his own followers. What do you think?
I admire pzarquon's upfront straight talk. My TV program is called
Tili'i-Tell it like it is.
I am a veteran in making TV programs on Olelo channel 54, since 1996. That is the only way I know how with not accepting any campaign contributions. to spread my city issues and that I am a mayoral candidate on air.
I am in my pre-school stage for this e-mail thing. It took me so long to get to the poll to vote for myself. Ha!
If any one goes to Collectible Show-this Friday, Sat. and Sunday, at Blaisdell Center, will you please drop by and say Hello? I am a jeweler/crafter by trade.
Thanks.

Strange that the people who complain the most about all politicians being crooks don't vote. Todays paper said only about 53% here vote, thats why nothing changes. Taxpayers hear the same promises and get same..MORE TAXES. Where is the incentive to vote ? This year is a great year for choice maybe we can vote for the lesser of 10 evils rather than the lesser of 2. I was at Kaimuki NAPA yesterday picking up a timing chain cover gasket for my plymouth duster 340 when John asked the question. What do you hope to accomplish by running for mayor when your chances are none to none.(of course he said he would vote for me). I said even if I don't win I bring to the debate how I feel, how the public feels. Yes I have a hard time smiling and waving to people knowing that all is in chaos in city hall. I am not happy when permits expire to take care of our sewage. Politicians are set in their visions of oahu. I don't see how they can see when falling into pot holes on our streets. Even if you look into the magical waters of our ocean it is clouded with sewage. If this is the type of vision they have for our city, they better change eye doctors and THATS what I bring to the debate. Who do you call when your computer breaks, a technician who fixes the problem or a politician who talks about computer problems... the choice is always yours.

Just FYI, it was announced on KHVH radio this week that both Duke Bainum and Mufi Hannemann will participate in a question and answer session live on the radio on August 10. This will be on the Rick Hamada show, tenatively set for between 7 and 10 a.m. in the morning. It will not be a full-on debate but instead a Q & A session where the candidates will answer questions taken from emails sent in to Rick.

Bainum and Hanneman were scheduled to face off this very moment (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2004-8-3&e=85&c=1) at the Japanese Cultural Center. I wonder what media folks will bother to show up?
Meanwhile, there was a fun profile (http://starbulletin.com/2004/08/03/news/story2.html) of perennial candidate and former mayor Frank F. Fasi in today's Star-Bulletin."I'm going to win this mayor's race by a landslide -- that's how confident I am," Fasi proclaimed. "When people get all the issues out and start comparing all of the candidates, they're going to ask questions of those that want to be mayor, 'What have you done?'"

First of all, any real mayoral candidate who reads this, take it as a joke, OK?
Good.
Now. I am tempted to vote for Frank, not because I particularly like him, but because if Ann Kobayashi and Charles Dzhou think they have trouble with Mayor Harris, I'd absolutely love to see them try to get along with Da Mayor.

It's funny, and a little sad. I'm voting for Bainum but mostly because he's not Hanneman. But after suffering through more than a few godawful Bainum TV ads, and then seeing Fasi being feisty as ever on the TV news last night, I turned to my wife and said, "Ah, hell, voting for him would at least be better than 'none of the above.' I might vote for Fasi just for the hell of it."
She replied, "Me too."
Aha. A campaign strategy.

What are the positions of Hanneman, Bainum, and Fasi on forced leasehold conversions.Though my Google-fu isn't what it used to be, as far as I can tell, both Hanneman and Bainum have come up on the side of leaseholders over landowners in the forced leasehold conversion battle. Hanneman introduced (http://www.co.honolulu.hi.us/refs/bill/status/1998/r229.htm) one of the more contentious forced conversion bills at Kuapa Isle (though he punted (http://starbulletin.com/96/03/20/news/story3.html) on the same question a few years earlier). Bainum also voted in favor (http://starbulletin.com/2002/12/05/news/story4.html) of a forced conversion bill in 2002 (and protested when an activist implied that she'd put a curse on councilmembers).
Neither of their websites put this question front and center, that's for sure. And I'm bummed to say Hanneman definitely hired the better web developer.
Fasi, I don't know. Though by his history and the past battles he's chosen (opposing developers), I would guessthat he'd also align himself with those advocating leasehold conversions.

Re: leasehold conversion
Please remember one thing: Nobody forced anybody to sign on any purchasing contracts!
We mortgaged 2 leasehold properties a long time ago. Our agents explained to us very clearly. The info. about the leasehold conditions were very clearly stated on the contracts.
When you signed it. You know you are paying less the land. You know that.
You know they are going to take back the land at the end of the specific date! You know that.
A law is a law. You signed it. You pick up the consequences!
You need to honor what you signed.
I am, as one of the mayoral candidate, I don't believe it is a mayor's role to get involved with this. I am not saying it is not a huge problem now in this city & county of Honolulu. I felt very sorry for those really are being hurt tremendously when theeir final date of expiration dates are already there or are coming closer and closer to be actually scarry!
You're welcome to educate me.
Love, Lillian Hong
P.S. We no long have the 2 leasehold properties. They were foreclosed when we filed for bankruptcy in 1999. We paid out along the years, and we got 0 back.

Hi, M/M Bolted,
Welcome to hawaiithreads.com.
I jointed here around June/July, 2004.
I know you did not ask me to respond. I am one of the 10 mayoral candidates. A wise man once told me, if you really think you can stand on your two feet and head up and face forward to no matter what controversies are in front of you, then you are a real man, then you are a real woman.
Since you stated you favored forced leasehold conversion. It is your choice. I respect that. You must have a reason of your own. Please go to
August 13, 2004's item from lillian l. hong. I am not for forced leasehold conversion.
I am new and learning computer. I don't know how to pull my message so I can included into this e-mail. Sorry.
Hope you keep on corresponding here. People here are very friendly.
I open this site almost every night.
Have a nice day.

I'm puzzled by the Hanneman ads telling me the Campaign Finance people had found he'd done nothing wrong. It almost looks like a pre-emptive strike, since as far as I'm aware he's not been accused of doing anything wrong in the first place. Unless he expected a negative ad accusing him of such and started running these ads, only to be outsmarted by the accusation never appearing.

Well... so starts another week of scheduled debates with mayoral candidates now in mililani mauka. We are all hearing the same answers followed by who got what union endorsements and who accepted illegal campaign contributions. Same answers I guess people want to see the words come out of the candidates mouth so they can say they heard it themselves. I belong to 2 unions the HGEA and the Teamsters. I didn't ask for support because the leadership makes the choice for the members..the members have no say. I think it is important to have the support of the membership more than the leadership. It seems unions don't ask for members input on candidates, but always ask for union due increases. Don't get me wrong unions have their place...just dont expect to always have your way because you endorsed a candidate. Unions have no right to have a share in any profits unless the employer feels he can pay out if it was a good year. If unions wants a percentage of all profits...OPEN YOUR OWN BUSINESS THEN see if you can afford to pay more benefits or wages. Thats why we have collective bargaining...not pay us now bargaining.

Wow FORCED leasehold conversion....hold on now...when you sign a document stating that your property is lease...thats exactly what it is or you would look somewhere else for fee simple. Lets say you want to rent some of your property that has been in your family for generations, you draft a leasehold contract which your lessee signed. Do you want to be forced to sell your property just because they want it and leased your land for 20 years? This land has been in your family 100 years...is this fair?? Of course not, anytime you sign.. it is stressed that you are fully aware that this land is LEASEHOLD not FEE SIMPLE. It would be nice if it were..we could pick out the most expensive land lease it for 20 years, then force the owners to sell it, then turn around and sell it for a profit... So I guess you could say I am not for forced lease hold conversion. I went to real estate school recently... lots of good stuff but cost me $500.00.

NOOOOOOO too much trouble road calls from dead batteries. Where did the extra money come from to pay not for only ONE BUS BUT 10 who knows I guess monkeys do come out of someones butt and pigs really do fly..I better find another job so I can pay more taxes for these projects. Well "normally"... some places say if it is under $50.00 just throw it away... can you believe that..taxpayer money in the rubbish...then I have to draw a new one from storeroom which cost $50.00 more to put in a bus.... go figure..This is why I have no faith in the mayoral candidates...they don't know what the heck is going on.. a few thousand here...another thousand there... it doesn't matter if all your appointees have degrees...they end up blinded by their own paper work and not concentrating on the main paper which is the green ones comming out of taxpayers pockets... :mad:

I'm puzzled by the Hanneman ads telling me the Campaign Finance people had found he'd done nothing wrong. The strategies of the "big two" candidates in this year's mayoral race just leave me scratching my head. Bainum, who always struck me as an articulate and straightforward fellow, gives us those most ridiculous, insincere "a broom is whatever" ads. And Hanneman? He's gone completely off the rails.
One, Hanneman's ads mention Bainum six times more often than their supposed candidate - "Bainum said this... Bainum did that... Bainum thinks... do you think Bainum believes... Bainum is... and vote Hanneman!" Um, what?
Two, even if Hanneman's ads are responding to some kind of accusation by the Bainum campaign, as you mention, their response is way disproportionate to the trigger, making them seem defensive with a capital D. Even worse, although the point of the ad is, "Campaign finance probe looks into Hanneman campaign and finds no purposeful wrongdoing," most folks stop listening after "Campaign finance probe looks into Hanneman campaign." It calls attention to something I think he's better off leaving alone.
Finally, any ad that says, basically, "We don't believe in negative advertising, unlike our dishonorable and funny smelling opponent" is doing more damage than good. (Lots of candidates fall into this trap... and it's less funny every time.)
Can't we just vote now and get it over with? Oh yeah... absentee ballots. Too bad filling one out doesn't block their ads with some sort of "B chip" (B as in bullpucky).

Bainum and Hanneman will go head to head this afternoon in a debate broadcast live on KIPO (http://www.hawaiipublicradio.org/kipogrid.htm).
Meanwhile, KGMB gave both candidates' television ads to HPU's Dean of Communications to dissect and critique (http://www.kgmb.com/local/show_news.php?show_n_id=3112):What we will remember from that ad, that Mufi Hannemann didn't do something wrong, that's not what you want us to remember from a television ad... In order to run a negative campaign you have to talk about your opponent. That means you are buying airtime and people see your opponents face on the screen.She gives Hanneman low marks, and I agree, but she also likes Bainum's ridiculous brooms.

The question came up earlier in this conversation as to what position Bainum and Hanneman held on the issue of lease-to-fee condominium conversion. Well, tonight's debates made clear that the question is one of the dividing lines in the race. Bainum supports the current law allowing forced conversions, and Hanneman is against it.
Hanneman's position was closer to Bainum's earlier in his political career, so depending on your perspective, you could say he "saw the light" or he's doing a "flip flop."

I believe the city council was wrong to enact a chapter 38 in 1990(?).
They had misused the word "Public domain".
We had 2 leasehold condos before. We were told very clearly by our realty agent that we are owning the homes, not the land. There were a time limit to the leasehold duration. There may be an increase to the leasehold rent, there was no cap. There was an expiration date. We understood what the contract called for. We signed the contract knowing very well that we owned the homes, not the lands.
I will, if I am your Honolulu Mayor, repeal chapter 38. I will not agree to declare any condo conversion for public domain.
When one signed the contract, one signed the contract!
You quote Dr. Bainum & Mufi's thoughts on leasehold conversion. What is yours, Pzarquon?

When I read your 1st note, I really LOL
I do video production using Olelo's facilities. I am going to use this LOL in my video. It is so funny.
May I ask what district are you in? Are you in outer island? Are you in Hawaii?
I am learning computer since end of June. I do not have a website.
I do have an e-mail: AskMayorHong@aol. com
Do you have friends & families in City & County of Honolulu? There is a profile of the mayoral candidates in 2004 election on www.state.hi.us/elections.
Can you help me by letting them know that I am also running for Honolulu Mayor? There are altogether 10.
Thanks. Love, Lillian Hong
P.S. There is a poll from Hawaii Threads, usually comes out at the beginning of my opening the government hall. Try to have a look. If you can't get that page, ask Ryan of hawaii threads to help you. He helped me before.

Mayoral foes talk trash — and lease (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2004/Sep/03/ln/ln11a.html)
Gordon Pang, Honolulu Advertiser, September 3, 2004
Leading mayoral contenders Duke Bainum and Mufi Hannemann traded jabs during and after a forum yesterday, with each chiding the other for making too many promises or flip-flopping on key issues. Hannemann said Bainum cannot keep his answer straight on where a new landfill should be located, while Bainum pointed out that Hannemann had voted 15 times to begin mandatory leasehold conversion proceedings against private landowners, a practice Hannemann now wants stopped.

On the lease to fee issue, I have to side with the property owners, as Lillian noted several posts ago. Reason? The property owners bought the land in good faith, developed the land by erecting the building (at least where condos are concerned) with the intention of leasing it out long term. When the leasholders signed up, they knew what they were getting into. Sure, back in 1965 that lease was like $90 a year or whatever... but today with property values as they are the leaseholders either have to re-up at the current market value or buy at the current market value, only if the property owner wants to sell. Government should never ever have forced property owners to sell to their tennants. I know this was done long ago, but to me, because Democrats were in control, this kind of socialism has prevailed. Whatever happened to private property rights?
As far as the mayors race goes, at this late juncture I am still undecided. The only thing I am decided upon is to not vote for Bainum mainly because he is so blatantly for the expensive proposition of fixed rail that will only benefit 10% of the population. Fixed rail and other forms of forced mass transit is only social engineering, the kind of stuff Democrats love.
If any of the mayoral candidates can step to the plate, and say "I am not for rail transit and it will never be built during my term in office," then that person has my vote.
The taxpayers cannot afford expensive rail. Our wallets are still aching from 40+ years of Democrat tax policy that will take several more years to correct, only if we get the right, fiscal conservatives into office.

I am for bus system. I believe all I have to do is keep the present city policy on adding more buses. Big ones, medium ones, & little ones. one regular bus will take away around 75 single driver of one single car on the road. I know it is not "as simple as that." there are other details I have to work on, If I am your Honolulu Mayor.
As you stated, even if I said I am not for rail transit, and I will not build one in my term of office, I don't think you are convinced to vote for me.
I believe rail transit, from city government & state government, it is a pay back scheme for favors, illegal campaign donations, etc. The non-bid or bid contract's have been jacked up by 5 folds or 10 folds. I don't have proof, just common business sense.
The rail transit, besides you have to buy the buses, with some modifications and some fancy names, it is building fancy trasit stations. It costs millions & millions. Then comes the developers eyeing the surrounding areas of the transit stations. They are going to build high rise condos and will make a lot of money! A pay back scheme from the city, to me.
I sensed that there is/are something in your mind for selecting a mayor,
what is it? Is it something you hope this coming mayor will do for your district?
I am for bus system. I ride TheBus. Yes, TheBus can always use some improvemnts. What do you think?

I am a very positive person. I do as much as I can do. I do as long as I am happy. I am still working on some more programs to put on Olelo. Now it is on Olelo channel 52 53 54 55 56. One day I have 3 programs at the same time on 3 different Olelo channels. I have done all I can do. The rest is at the mercy of the people in this city & County of Honolulu. I will be starting to walk the street and wave sign again from Sept. 6, on. I am going to the City Coucil to hear the current issues on 9-7, 9-8, 9-9. I have a Douglas Trade Show on 9-10, 9-11, 9-12, in NBC. I am very busy.
I just volunteered to-day for the Okinawa Festival, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fasi was on the stage. Mufi was dancing with the crowd. I didn't see Dr. Bainum. I was the video camera person.
Afterwards I hurried back to Olelo and put in some editing works. I go to-morrow again to volunteer for Okinawa Festival, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then I'll go to Olelo for editing till 10 p.m.
Thank you again, very much.

Isn't it some co-incidence! I use only green pen to write. I do have to use black ink for official documents, such as the absentee ballot!
I am an independent. I have no party affliate.
Mayoral election is a non-partisan. Every registered voter in the island --Oahu, we called it the City & County of Honolulu, can vote.
If one of the 10 mayoral candidate receive 50% + 1 vote, he or she (I am the only she) will be elected out right to be Honolulu Mayor. Otherwise, the 2 top candidates will be facing each other to the November's General Election.

I was volunteering as a video camera technician at the Okinawa Festival. I need to go to the bathroom. The ladies' waiting line is around 15 -20 persons. Both the real restroom and the portable temp. restroom's waiting line about same.
The men's waiting line is 0. There were only few using the facility.
A gentleman decided he is going to help all these poor ladies. He told the men to go to the portables. He directed the women to go to the men's.
We all listened to him and split the long line into 2. One goes to the women's, the other goes to the men's. Inside the man's, one urinal, one handicap, and one regular. We used the handicap one and the regular one. We just looked at the urinal.
If I am your Honolulu Mayor, I want to "delete" all urinals in the city's facilities. During jammed time, with a special duty police officer, or a park employee, offer the men's restroom to women. It is a choice. Up to you.
I need to know:
1. What do men think of this idea of mine?
2. Do women mind standing in line with a man infront of her, or at the back?

Someone mentioned party affiliation on here, and it occurred to me that I do not know which party that Mufi and Duke associate with. They like to keep this out of their advertisements. I admit I am curious, while it matters most to me what they say they will do for the island, more than anything.

The Honolulu mayor's race is nonpartisan, which officially means no party affiliations. That said, both Hanneman and Bainum are/were active members of the local Democratic party. I would imagine take lunch with Democrats more often than Republicans, anyway.
Recall the flap over the Brickwood Galuteria voiceover (http://starbulletin.com/2004/07/16/news/story8.html) in an ad for Hanneman, which was recorded before Galuteria became the Democratic party chair. The Star-Bulletin article says it right out: "Both Bainum and Hannemann are Democrats, but the mayoral race is nonpartisan."
As an aside, with a Republican in the Governor's Office and with Republicans finally making a fair bit of noise in their own right, "Democratic control" is less indisputable. More and more often I've noticed campaign literature and ads -- even for partisan races -- leaving out the party affiliation entirely. Which, I suppose, is for the best... although for people for whom party links matter, it can be a bit aggravating.

Hi, Mocha,
Thanks you for your encouragement! Haha! Thank you to put me along side with the most famous Mayor Fasi. My goal result, up to to-day, is like a turtle, walking so slowly. I have done all my best happily since November, 2003. I only have, maybe, few more days, I can put programs on Olelo to tell people in the community that I, Lillian Hong is also running for Honolulu Mayor. I went thru the mayoral debate on Olelo on Wednesday, September 8, 2004. 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Time went thru so fast, Mr. Bob Rees did not have time to ask a single Q to Mr. Teruya. There were 8 of us. Mayor Fasi, and Mr. Gibson were not present. I was very nervous at first, then OK, later. I got up this morning (September 9, 2004 ) at 6, so I can have a cup of coffee and watched the re-run from 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. This was the first time, and I think the only time, all 10 mayoral candidates were invited to attend. I did OK. Olelo's crew had audio problems, time clock problems, camera switching problems.
To-day, I went to set up for our Douglas Trade Show in NBC for the week end show.
I picked up some Chinese food and rushed home just made it in time for Joe Moore at 7 p.m. I watched every minutes of it. It is very different from Olelo's the night before. Everything about the video production was fine. They are professionals! What do you think about Mayor Fasi?
Is he a character or not? He is still in demand, even Joe Moore had to yield to him! To me, Mayor Fasi does not look like 84, he surely does not act like 84, either. I do believe he will pick up some more votes from this program.

Mufi gets my vote;
he can think on his feet. he's well spoken. We need a real kama'aina in office.
Bainum seems too ill at ease.
fasi; been there done that.
saw the three in action one speakoff; Fasi had to read a list of his 'accomplishments" rather than recount them from his own mind.
Major point against Fasi for my money:
he had the Queen's Surf torn down. This was a major beautiful draw on Waikiki beach. To do anything to destroy the old style thatched tiki laden tropical bars and restaurants is criminal.
Why was this done?
Apparently cuz he hated Spence.
This is no reason of course, to condemn, eminent domain and turn a property into a park.
personal spite destroys a beautiful landmark, something that hundreds if not thousands back then came to Hawaii for as well as many of us locals enjoyed visiting...

I would like to thankyou for the honor of finally meeting you. The mayoral debate was very enjoyable even if we ran out of time and I didn't have a question asked of me. I felt that I had enough to say but as usual Mufi and Banium were going at it again. Enough bashing already, lets talk solutions not bad stuff. Isnt it a shame this is the one and only debate we will have seen each other and presented real answers to the public. Well gotta grab some sleep with my two jobs I need the rest.. thanks again and take care.

Hi, Mr. Teruya,
Thank you for responding my note. I know you are younger than I am. I was not expecting this younger. Especially with your fashionable hairdo. You spoke well. Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday I will be in the strret walking, wearing my sign, and waving my sign also. Dear Miss Hong:
Thankyou for your comments, I am not that young... 45 years old... is that young? Only because I feel as you do that we are running out of time. Our city needs solutions fast. How many years do we have before we retire? We need crime, graffiti, infrastructure support and many other things taken care of now before its too late. Many times I too also felt why vote when the same type of leadership always wins. You know we can both run for office but I dont want to be handed the keys to a totally broken down city and people will expect miracles. You as well as I know that progressive action is what is needed to reach our final goal. If started now and the next mayor continues, then one day we will be caught up. Most people don't realize that the future is not tomorrow but it is what we do today that will shape tomorrow.... "get well soon" :)

Dear Ms. Hong and Mr. Teruya:
First of all, let me commend you both for your civility in what must surely feel like an uphill battle. Your courtesy and kindness towards each other in what has become an ugly battle of the titans (Hanneman and Bainum) certainly is refreshing.
I hope in the future you are able to retain your idealism and kindness and not become discouraged. I think you both speak for "the little guy" and I certainly wish you much aloha and luck in the future.
I once thought of running for public office, too, but then I realized what a fishbowl existence that would be and that maybe, just maybe, I could still make changes without having to subject myself to the mudslinging and namecalling that usually goes along with any political battle.
Please know that I respect both of you enormously, and send many mahalos to you for having the courage to make the sacrifices that you are making. Too bad I don't live in Honolulu...I would be proud to cast a vote for either of you.

Hi, Miulang,
I am still learning computer. I didn't know these threads are really interwining all over the places outside of Honolulu. Mahalo very much for your encouragement to me and to Mr. Teruya. Did you know Mr.Teruya is a very handsome man?
I am a business woman. I always believe in intrade competitions. If your competitors are no good. They are no good! I do not have to worry, right?!
If my competitors are good, and especially they are better than I am, I should take a good look at myself, learn from them, and improve my shortcomings, as soon as possible.
I always believe knowledge can be taught and learned. I always believe experience can be achieved by participating and learning. I do believe kindness and kind heart come into you within, when you make your first cry when you are borned. This kindness will stay with you no matter what you encounter in your future life!
I was lucky I have not changed my heart, even with the almost broken marriage in 1990, filing bankruptcy in 1999, I am still with the same heart.
The problem I have is: I am unable to convince most of ThePeople in this community, whether they are voters or not,(They still can make a difference by talking to others) I will be the same person without changing my heart when I become their Honolulu Mayor. Their experiences, and including mine: once the candidates were elected, they showed us, ThePeople, their true colors. They, the elected officials, were good people from the community. Now, some of the famous ones were in jails, disappeared, fined, etc. Some of the unfamous ones, still in the state government & city government, are still doing harms to ThePeople who elected them into office to do good thing for The People. Most of the elected government officials told ThePeople, they will listen, they did. That's all they did. Left ear in, right ear out. Most of the government officials told ThePeople they will put people's needs first, their own's last. What we, ThePeople, saw, were, theirs first, People's last!
How can I convince ThePeople I will not change my heart that was borned into me? I can learned whatever it takes to be a good People's Mayor, with the help from ThePeople in this community to solve their urgent problems & their urgent needs!
Can you help me? Will you help me? I know you are not from Honolulu. If I saw your note, I always believe, there are many others saw yours also. You have already made a difference for me. Can you, will you, put in another big & last effort to help this little people, me, Lillian Hong, to run for Honolulu Mayor? As the newspaper stated that: the rest of the 7 mayoral candidates will probably garnish ~1%~ of the total votes on Saturday, September 18, 2004. I need a helping hand. Will you lend me yours?
~~~Calling for voters, vote for: Hong, Lillian Lai Lam Wang~~~
Love, Lillian Hong
Mahalo again for the HawaiiThreads, I am interwining with YOU also.
I am still learning computer. I didn't know these threads are really interwining all over the places outside of Honolulu. Mahalo very much for your encouragement to me and to Mr. Teruya. Did you know Mr.Teruya is a very handsome man?
I am a business woman. I always believe in intrade competitions. If your competitors are no good. They are no good! I do not have to worry, right?!
If my competitors are good, and especially they are better than I am, I should take a good look at myself, learn from them, and improve my shortcomings, as soon as possible.
I always believe knowledge can be taught and learned. I always believe experience can be achieved by participating and learning. I do believe kindness and kind heart come into you within, when you make your first cry when you are borned. This kindness will stay with you no matter what you encounter in your future life!
I was lucky I have not changed my heart, even with the almost broken marriage in 1990, filing bankruptcy in 1999, I am still with the same heart.
The problem I have is: I am unable to convince most of ThePeople in this community, whether they are voters or not,(They still can make a difference by talking to others) I will be the same person without changing my heart when I become their Honolulu Mayor. Their experiences, and including mine: once the candidates were elected, they showed us, ThePeople, their true colors. They, the elected officials, were good people from the community. Now, some of the famous ones were in jails, disappeared, fined, etc. Some of the unfamous ones, still in the state government & city government, are still doing harms to ThePeople who elected them into office to do good thing for The People. Most of the elected government officials told ThePeople, they will listen, they did. That's all they did. Left ear in, right ear out. Most of the government officials told ThePeople they will put people's needs first, their own's last. What we, ThePeople, saw, were, theirs first, People's last!
How can I convince ThePeople I will not change my heart that was borned into me? I can learned whatever it takes to be a good People's Mayor, with the help from ThePeople in this community to solve their urgent problems & their urgent needs!
Can you help me? Will you help me? I know you are not from Honolulu. If I saw your note, I always believe, there are many others saw yours also. You have already made a difference for me. Can you, will you, put in another big & last effort to help this little people, me, Lillian Hong, to run for Honolulu Mayor? As the newspaper stated that: the rest of the 7 mayoral candidates will probably garnish ~1%~ of the total votes on Saturday, September 18, 2004. I need a helping hand. Will you lend me yours?
~~~Calling for voters, vote for: Hong, Lillian Lai Lam Wang~~~
Love, Lillian Hong
Mahalo again for the HawaiiThreads, I am interwining with YOU also.
Dear Ms. Hong:
I hope you prosper after the election. Sometimes I wonder if politics is meant for honest, decent people who want to make changes. I have seen many people in elected office start out with high ideals and honesty and yet along the way something happens and they end up, as you pointed out, in jail or in the headlines in an embarrassing manner. Someone once said, "Power corrupts" so that even well-intentioned people get sucked into the money, power and influence-mongering of the special interest groups. After all, once elected (if you can get that far), it will take money to stay in office and before you know it, you end up being beholden to some faction or other. If an honest politician were to stick to the high moral ground, I think that person would burn out before long...there are not enough honest politicians around to even form a support group...everyone has some skeleton in the closet.
Yes, Ms. Hong, there are many people who were born and raised in Hawaii who now live up here on the Mainland. We are concerned as you are about the deterioration of a life in Hawaii that we fondly remember. And there are quite a few "expatriots" who also come to this forum to check out the pulse of the islands. For us, being away from the islands doesn't mean we don't care what happens to it. Maybe someday some of us will return to help you and Mr. Teruya in your cause...if we could afford to work and live there!

reminds me; a gal who we knew in our church, small keed time, entered politics, thinking she could effect a change.
As friends, ohana and backers, we did da sign wavin' funky chicken thang on the side o da road many times.
her name was
Diana Hansen.
She gave it her all.
As I recall, politics was just too much of a snakepit for her.
I give her an "E" for effort tho.

I believe in fate. I believe in fun reading of our Chinese zodiacs signs. How on earth you mentioned a snakepit in your story? I do not know Diana Hansen.
I am borned in the year of the snake. Going into a snakepit is rightfully my home. Maybe I am the right person? It depends solely on your trust in me, an unknown person to you. Because the snakepit is my home, I will clean up, and make it the best home for me, my family. my friends, my co-workers, & my neighbors to live, and to visit.
As in real life, to me, the snakepit is the City Hall. If I am your Honolulu Mayor, I'll take good care of your city hall as the best I can as if I am taking care of my home. Can you trust me? Will you have me?

Thank you very much for your down to earth, straight forward note from far far away. Computer is so amazing! Because of running for Honolulu Mayor, because somebody told me to get into e-mail, here I am since June/July, 2004. I was told by the programming director from Olelo, one can pull the programs out from Olelo's on air programs,to "anywhere" from www.olelo./ org. So far I am unable to do that.
I do things one day at a time. I think things one day or more, at a time. I only have one more day to wave in the street, Thursday. As for Friday, I have to go set up my Woman's Expo in NBC for Saturday & Sunday's show for a living. The show closed at 9 p.m. By the time I get home, I'll know my status.
Just want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of you~HawaiiTthreads~for having me on your e-mail. Mahalo to you all for reading my notes. Mahalo also for your encouragements and kind words.
I saw the van with "HawaiiNews", in down town area one day last week, I am unable to open the site from here. I still have a lot to learn.
Wishing you all have a happy day. Please take good care of yourself, your family and your loved ones.
Love, Lillian Hong
P.S. Just in case, I am unable to open this site to-morrow and in the future.
I want to make sure you know my nahalos. Haha!

Interesting you should mention Chinese astrology. I am either an Ox or a Rat person, depending on which account of dates you want to believe. I like the traits associated with both signs, but I think I am more rat-like than oxen. Heehee! Maybe I should be a politician, too, yeah?

Just a short note:
Selling chinese jade zodiacs is one of my trade. The difference of me and others is I asked my customers to read the little stories as "fun reading". I also asked them to look into other schools of chinese zodiacs. There are many many others.
I was waving in front of the State Capitol around 2 hours. Then I went to Chinatown to pick up some jewelry supply. I went back to City Hall after 4 p.m. The absentee booths had closed. Restriction of no political activities within 200 feet had been lifted. I waved for about 15 minutes. Volunteers from Senator Dan Inouye lined up in front of me, and in the back of me. I kind of "disappeared" in the crowd. So I said good bye to them in a very friendly manner (one of the volunteers did offer me that they can move across the street). I figured, it will be easy for me to move, because I am just a lone person. So I went back to the State Capitol for around another 1.5 hours of waving. I am all done with my political life, for now. I am getting ready for my Woman's Expo. I don't know about my future, until Saturday around after 10 p.m.
I do believe, I always can dream. I always can hope.
Love, Lillian Hong
P.S. Surely this is not a short note. As you said, "Heehee"

Mahalo to whoever you are. I got 6 votes from HawaiiThreads. Hurrah!
Love, Lillian Hong
P.S. I read in the newspaper, 7 of the remaining mayoral candidates, including me, should garnish altogether with a 1% of the total registered votes. I hope the newspaper is wrong.

You saw my van, Lillian? :eek: Hope I was driving responsibly...
Good luck to you, at the expo, and in the election! The paper might have predicted you and seven others would share only 1 percent of the total vote, but I can tell you that you got at least 33 percent of the vote in my household (among registered, likely voters).

Dearest pzarquon,
I am crying as I wrote this note to you, and to all the others corresponding with me over the past 3 months. My tears dropped down on both side of my face. Few sentences from you on the paper, it means a lot for me. I always like to do things to others when they are in need. I was given back the kindness from you, whom I have never met face to face, when I needed a kind word the most, in this late hours. Every word you wrote in your note, was exactly what I need to support me thru to-nite and thru to-morrow until 10 p.m. Thank you.
Love, Lillian Hong
P.S. I only saw the van "HawaiiNews" imprinted on the outside. I did not see the driver. The driving was perfectly within the law. But, if I knew it was you, I would be following you all over the places until I got you. I might got a ticket for irresponsive driving! Haha!

Hello Ms. Hong:
I hope you are holding up under the stress of watching election return results this evening. I really hope you are not done with political life! You need to continue to be a voice against "same old-same old" government. You and others who think like you need to continue to question the status quo because if you don't and get discouraged and give up, much of what makes Honolulu and the rest of Hawaii so unique (the "aloha") will be diluted to the point where it just might as well be called a territory of LA County, California. Whatever happens to Honolulu will also eventually happen to towns all over Hawaii, unless thoughtful people speak out and start planning for a better future for the 'aina.
Although the thought of mounting another political campaign in the future seems daunting, I think you can still do lots of good by speaking to the people you meet at the trade shows about your ideas. Eventually, you will win over more people...one person at a time.
You know, that's how avalanches get started...one little pebble rolling down a hill becomes a wall of snow and ice that well, moves mountains!
Illigitimi non carborundum (Don't let the bastards get you down).
Me kealoha pumehana,
Miulang ;)
