I've been searching for a place to hang out in. When I was searching.. I didn't even come across this on Google! Then I was on Hawaiistories and saw the link and came here and I'm amazed by how many people are here.. Why is a community this size hard to find?

Maybe because Ryan hasn't paid Google to put it at the top of the listing, or simply the meta key words are being used by every Hawaii website on the planet. Also other than my site, and perhaps the Mililani, Geocachers and Jeep sites, other than Ryan's own sites, not many other sites are linking back to HawaiiThreads... hence not that many links, not high up in the relevence hierachy does a site go.

That said, in time as more people find out about the HawaiiThread and more sites link to it, in the course of time (like 2 to 3 years) a site will eventually make it to the top or near top of the present Google indexing scheme.

Just using the Google "link to "HawaiiThreads"" trick in the search box yields about 4 pages with links back to this site, most by the places I mentioned above. I am sure if you try a slightly different word combination, your mileage will vary.

Another thing I forgot to mention, that this site is still fairly new having started only in April I believe. So in the scope of internet life, HawaiiThreads is almost just barely crawling in its long life to come!

That said, I do what I can... I amrunning paid ads with Google, and experiment now and then with more conventional advertising (seen the Honolulu Weekly lately?). And, yes, HawaiiThreads.com is part of a hodgepodge accidental "network" of Hawaii sites, and they all link each other -- so they bring in the most people so far. The irony is, sister sites HawaiiNews and HawaiiStories have ten times the visitors of this site, but this site is where most of the reliably new and fresh stuff can be found!

We'll get there, in time, in time... today Hawaii web wanderers, tomorrow, the world!

Hmm! I had never heard of MeetIn (http://www.meetin.org/) before. It's like a less structured MeetUp (http://www.meetup.com/)! (Here's MeetUp's various Honolulu gatherings (http://www.meetup.com/locale/us/hi/honolulu/).)

The Ohana Lanai (http://www.ohanalanai.com/lanai/) is great. I'm learning more pidgin there than I did in my many years of public school. :) Another up-and-coming space is Hawaii People (http://www.hawaiipeople.net/). There's also SpeedHawaii.com's ForumsHawaii (http://www.forumshawaii.net/phpBB2/), but I'll tell you, I'm too old and uncool for that crowd.

I love Craigslist, at least for the listings (the forums (http://forums.honolulu.craigslist.org/?i=) are a bit too scattered for my tastes). And I'm definitely collecting friends over at GPH (www.globalpauhana.org/), Hawaii's own "Friendster" site, although actual interaction through the site is pretty limited.

As for MSN and Yahoo! mailing lists, don't forget ye old "Hawaii (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hawaii/)" group... an oldie but a goodie. Sister site HawaiiAnswers.com also has one for helping people (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hawaiianswers/) with questions about the islands.

Hawaii folks are all over the web!
