"Can someone that lived on one come back after years and years just to *trip* down memory lane? I want to see Schofield again soooooo bad!!!"
Hi there! I shop Schofield Commissary every Saturday, and it is a new commissary since you were here, I am guessing, for it isn't even eight yrs. old yet, if I have my numbers right. I don't know the policy for letting visitors on base, if they aren't going to see someone by name, or of course if you have an ID card, C'MON BACK!
Schofield is just about being rebuilt, with so many new buildings, and older ones being refurbished inside and out. It is really looking great. Officer housing isn't changed, but is upkept looking really nice. I hope you get the visit back here, that you long for.

OMG!!! I lived at 1867 B Ekaha Circle, is it still there? True, I probably wouldnt recognize anything. No cards or much of anything as proof i was there. Getting to know someone that could let me on as a visitor is likely my only hope.

Hi there! I can't guarantee you that I can drive the whole base Saturday, looking for that address, but I sure can write the addy down, and look for it sometime, and honestly, I will try. HEY!! I could take the digital camera with me and snap a photo for you. Now if someone asks me what the heck I am doing, back me up, will ya? LOL...I need a base map, cuz I don't recognize that street name. Was it near the old commissary, or on-back, towards what I would call the back of the base?

Aw man, I have no clue! All know is I could *tour* the base on my trusty little ten speed. There were sidewalks running behind the housing and maybe a mile or less away, there was this deeeeeep gully. I remember going to the PX, the library, this huge pool somewhere but other street names, no idea. I did however put in that address in a reverse look up and found that as of 01, there was still an 1867 because *A* came up. It was a circle/cul de sac. Do you live on base? I did so much babysitting for the military families who of course were away from theirs and therefore didnt have granny or aunty to sit for them but other than our address and the music i liked, my memory is clouded my memories of my first *love*, a soldier whose family lived next door, lol. I'm pitiful.

P.S. I think i would have to say it was toward the back of the base maybe cuz we werent real far away from this road that led out to Kole Kole Pass.

LOL HI again, no, you aren't pitiful, as the memories are cool, and you were obviously very young then. I just read that it was near '81 that you lived here. No, I don't live on base. I live central Oahu, and the drive to base is easy, and of course saves SO much money doing all the shopping I can there. Prices here are absurd! If you don't get milk at walmart, you can pay EIGHT dollars for a gallon of milk.
I will post again if I find the street. You mention a gully, and I do recall the road going into base housing area going lower, and having something like that, sure. Will let you know if I have any luck. I am not the shy type, and if I find the address you lived at, I can knock on the door, tell them what I am doing, and if they mind if I snap a photo. Most people will understand, especially also being military.

So you are military? I'm confused, I guess I thought you would have to live in housing if you were but it seems like i might recall some people not doing so for thinking the provided housing was *so terrible* and they did have units were in bad need of re doing but ours was nice. If you are in the middle of the circle on Ekaha in order to get most of the building itself, I doubt anyone would ask ?'s Dont go out of your way!!!
Dang, I appreciate this sooooo much!!!!
If I thought Hawaii had any living expenses programs, I'd pack the kids and I up and come back but for now, it'll have to be coming for the memories, if even that.
Do you mind if i ask your age? Yes, I was 12, 13, and 14 then. If the phone directory covers the whole island, look up LUSK and give me the numbers if you would????

Hi again,
I am a 47yr. old housewife, & mother of a 17yr. old & a 20yr. old, as of this & next month. (their birthdays) My hubby & I married in '80, when he was just out of school in the Navy, & he retired Navy in late '93. (he had done 7yrs. in the Marines, for the total of at least 20yrs. needed to retire military.) He is a govt. contractor & we've lived in Hawaii since shortly after his retirement, so I have, of course, retired benefits, unlimited.
No, no one has to live on base. We never did, even when he was low rank, but chose to live off base, passing up that free water and electric, darnit. There are tons of military that live off-base, here. It is true some base housing is awful. When we first married, it was so small in Northern CA. that our corner sofa group would not FIT in the livingroom of tiny base housing. Here, they are building lots of new housing on just about all areas of the bases, and much of it is still pretty fine looking, on Schofield, with tons of new high-rise barracks for the singles, or couples.
Since you have kids, you are wise to just cherish the memories and not head back here unless you are worth a lot of money, or know you can make a lot, while here. A salary of 100K a yr. here, is nothing to brag about, with rent, houses to buy, electricity and all things costing sooo much. we have military shopping which is HALF what groceries are off-base, I kid you not, and I still am amazed at what it costs in total, to live here. remember, they tax you to death here! They have the nerve to tax groceries off-base, and even MEDICAL care, plus ten-percent state income tax! I am native Texan, where there is NO state income tax, and they do NOT tax food, or medical, makes a huge difference.
I won't go out of my way, as you say, only cuz I am a busy mom and wife, well you know life these days, we're all rushed to keep up, but it would be nice if I could find the street.
OH! the name "Lusk" doesn't come up, in the "Leeward/Central" Oahu white pages. I can check the huge island-wide white pages when I get the new one. I may have thrown the old one away already.
Hope this helps you some.

10% state income tax??? Highest bracket is 9% and that is for those making over $40,000/yr. Most military folks should be able to get under that with deductions and all. Hawaii excise tax is 4%! A bargain compared to California's 7.75 sales tax! Can't compare either to Texas, but Hawaii does not tax military retirement. Plus Hawaii's property taxes are below the national average, and half what they are in California. If you can restrict your shopping to the Exchanges and Commissarys, you can do fine in Hawaii.

Just for the heck of knowing, do they even have government housing help or foodstamps?
Anywho, its only a dream as i know how unrealistic it would be for me to move the boys there with me especially. But coming there for a week or so IS going to happen!!
Thanks so much Karen for you help, you are a godsend!! My email is thankmel8r@hotmail.com but even tho this board is on the real quiet side, i will still be checking in a bit.

Hi there!
I have lived here more than ten yrs, and yes, our CPA did say ten percent once, but how many years ago was that? not sure..but even if nine percent, DANG that's still pretty bad, and the nerve, to tax FOOD and medical! I don't think CA. taxes those, and we did live there 13yrs., before moving here.
Right, they don't tax our military retirement, and that is a little blessing, but all said and done, it costs WAY too much to live here, unless one has family here, and then, home is where the heart is! Those that can't buy a house here are eaten up in taxes, as I know cuz we have only owned a home a tad more than two years, of our more than ten years here. This last tax season, we actually got money back for the first time, living here.

Hi memorylane,
Yes, there is plenty of welfare here, as there is a lot of need for it, with the high prices. Just now there is more affordable/govt. subsidized housing being built. One of the saddest things about this place is that native Hawaiians, and locals are moving in droves, to las Vegas, especially. Seems every May I meet or know grads that are going to UNLV soon after graduation, but even though you know they leave their hearts here, often they stay there, marrying, buying homes and putting down roots. I even know some parents that are thinking about following their two oldest kids, and moving there to stay, though they are many-generational Hawaiians. People being priced out of their homeland, that is so sad.
Just for the heck of knowing, do they even have government housing help or foodstamps?

That is sad , seeing how Hawaiians love and protect whats theirs. We would get so aggravated at all the military people that would be on a *tour* there and gripe and moan about being *stuck on this rock*......they couldnt just take off to see family and well, you know where you end up after driving only a few minutes in any direction. I will NEVER forget the beauty! I just came from my moms to try to find some pix of us but they were close ups of us in the backyard of 1867 so it wouldnt have helped you spot the place. My mom did say however that Ekaha was toward the back of the base.
And its off of Menoher.
Does it still rain there for a few minutes everyday? Thats where I saw my first DOUBLE rainbow. Wow.......*dreamy state*

We are planning on making the move to Oahu next year. I can see how not being able to itemize an interest deduction could really hurt. But all the "good" places to live have hefty income taxes. I grew up in Illinois, and have never paid state tax while in the military, but I sure as heck don't want to retire in Illinois??
I suppose too that everyone's perception of Hawaii's affordablility (or lack thereof) is a function of their standard of living. When we were stationed in Hawaii, we went out to eat once a week with 3 kids. We could never afford to go to a sit-down restaurant, so we packed a cooler with drinks and every Saturday we walked through Waikiki to the International Marketplace food court. Never spent more than $25 dollars! I'm making more now, but my earning power upon retirement is yet to be determined. I sure hope I don't need 100k/yr. I'll never be able to make that.
On a different note, would you ever consider living in Waianae?

Hi Mark,
I haven't checked out waianae, but since we bought a house two years ago, it isn't an issue. I hope you are keeping up with real estate prices here. Www.hicentral.com is an excellent place to, it being the official website for the real estate board here. These prices are exhorbitant now, and making 100K a yr. here affords a nice, average middle class lifestyle. I certainly don't have a champagne taste on a beer budget or anything, and can say no to myself. We will move if and when hubby's job will or can transfer us.

Hi there,
it actually can go a few days without any rain, depending on the part of the island, but Central Oahu, the general area of Schofield does seem to get at least the really light showers more than half the nights of any week, than not, just enough to make things a little muddy, and help a person track stuff into the house. (g)
I do know that in the more than ten years I have lived here, I have seen more rainbows than I had in my entire life everywhere else I have lived.
That is sad , seeing how Hawaiians love and protect whats theirs. Karen,
Yes, I've been watching the prices in Hawaii increase for the last year, but I've also been tracking San Diego's market. Simply put, we've made 200K on an 800 sq ft home in 2 years! We like it here, but the problem is that the only way to get at that equity is to sell. I've noticed that there is quite a disparity in price between homes in say, Aiea and homes in Waianae. And somewhere in the middle, both geographically and in price is Wahaiwa and Ewa Beach. I'm thinking of either buying a small place in Waianae for cash and working my way up, or going a bit up-market with a small mortgage on the Ewa Plain. Either way, it will be a significant reduction in my current suffocating mortgage. Thanks for the link....I'm going to check it out now!
PS I'm Navy too. Mark

OH mercy, memorylane! I am so sorry to have been rude. Dang me, I really haven't posted in awhile, and I do need to be reminded and encouraged to do this, but I offered cuz I shop every week, usually the weekend.
I have a digital, and it just seems to be the right thing to do. Please just post or message me the street name again, and Ill bring up a map of base online, and go ahead and be familiar with where your old street is, per the gate I usually drive into.
Life is so dang busy as you know, and I just get self-absorbed, but I offered and it won't take a lot of time or anything, just the reminder to TAKE the darn camera and snap a few, then my teen can show me, AGAIN (ahem..G) how to email them to you. (shame shame on lazy me...having three puter geeks in the house, I always have let them do things for me, and I never paid attention exactly how to upload or anything, since I didn't have to, but...I know how SILLY this is.)
Please feel welcome to private message me here, or just post, and I, right now, am going to pay attention to which thread we are on, or I'll forget by tomorrow.

PS...memorylane,
my teen just told me that she'll be glad to run to commissary with me this weekend, or the next, probably this one, just you know, life being spontaneous, and we'll find that place, surely it is still there, and ON a map online, and I really do owe it to whomever lives there now to knock on the door, ask if I can snap pics for you, and then I can snap a couple of the street, and whatever you see FROM that address.
Yes, this all hinges upon there still being a house at that addy, but usually streets themselves can't disapear, so either way, we'll snap a few, and teen says we'll mail them to your hotmail. I won't disappear again, and I think I'll email you a test email so you will have my hotmail addy, too.

What a great thread! My husband was a sargent in the Army and stationed out of Schofield. We lived off post in the town of Mililani. We had a small townhouse and its still there. When the kids and I were in Hawaii last August, we drove by so that I could show them where we used to live when the oldest daughter was born. I recall shopping at the commisary and PX on base...I even shopped at the Navy commissary near Pearl Harbor and at the PX on Hickam AFB. We grocery-shopped only twice a month as that's when my husband got paid. We'll be in Hawaii again next August and I'll probably drive by the Mililani townhouse again to see if it's still there! :)
Yeah, I know about LV.....I have a sister and many cousins who have relocated to Las Vegas and Washington state. My parents and two of my other siblings still live on Oahu along with many of my ohana members.
I enjoyed reading this thread! Mahalo for the memories!

Oh, Karen! No, you werent rude!! I know life can be crazy sometimes........I was actually hoping it was anything other than a bad turn of luck like a wreck or elsewise! I also figured maybe you got kind of scared away, lol.......it is kind of weird of someone wanting to get pictures snapped like this. Part of me just wants to say the heck and hop a plane out but the money i have at the moment is all i have in the world and when its gone, that will be that so........besides, it makes me so blue when i think of my life then compared to now, lol......i was *in love* with this guy next door and the cross from Kole Kole, I found out was removed, etc........someone posted the map link above, 1867 B (1867 is/was a building with 4 units to it) so B is the second one from the left. I'd love to see the whole building but whatever you can and will do will be great tho too!

Hey memorylane,
I will look for the map link above, and see how close the street is to the McComb gate, I THINK...is the one I use, it is the one across the street from a golfing store. anyway, will do what I can, cuz it just seems right to do, and NO, I do not for one sec. think it strange you want pics of your childhood home, good grief, perfectly normal, as I would LUV to see pics of the house I lived in when I was in elementary school in Austin, Texas.
Did you get my note to your hotmail account? The name on it should be Sunshine, I think, anyway, it is my hotmail addy, if not, I will email you again. Hotmail allows so much junk mail that you may have ignored the thing, not noticing it was a personal letter from me, well a note.
I will be in touch!

Nope, no emails from you........just do whatever you can, thats all you can do right. I would fail miserably if i attempted to lead you there based on memories over 20 years old, lol. Maybe a guard at the gate could tell you which way to Menoher which Ekaha is off of. ;)

Hi memorylane,
If Lyman is what I consider the "front" gate, if that is the gate where when you drive in, the gas station is on the right, then the map makes it pretty clear which way to go, EXCEPT they have actually made a couple of streets look like they wind differently, but again, you bet we will find it.
I have even had dreams of going back to the house where I was in elementary school, so I really can imagine how jazzed you are about your memories, and I offered to snap a few pics because of this, so wish me luck this weekend. I can be Edith Bunker when it comes to navigating, but that base isn't very big. I think daughter and I will probably have a couple of laughs as we drive around, and then I Hope there's still a fourplex there, either way, we're gonna snap SOMEthing.
I think I will send you another email right now, just to test. I will post this weekend to you, to let you know how it went, or email. I know we're going to Haleiwa Sat. night, but other than that, looks like a domestic weekend around the homefront.

Well, shot if i can pay you back by getting pics of your childhood home, just ask!!! I like taking roadtrips anyway, lol. Did you say how you come to be living in Hawaii and able to go on base at free will? I forget if so. :) Hey gal!
Yes, hubby is retired military and is a govt. contractor here on island, and he works on another local base, not Schofield, but we live Central Oahu, and so Schofield is my base for shopping and doing any business.
LOL well my childhood home is in austin, and actually I have relatives all over South Texas. I just haven't asked anyone to drive to the addy and snap pics. I dunno why I haven't, hmmm.
We HOPE to actually run to Schofield tomorrow, Tuesday, around noon with the digital. I am almost out of dogfood for our Aussie, and the price difference on and off base makes it worth the few minutes to run there, and today I got a lot of housework and laundry done, floors mopped, house clean, always orderly but its dusted, ya know, just looks ready for company, bathrooms and all...so tomorrow can be a goof off day. I will email you if we get some pics.
Hope all is well for you~

Hey Memorylane!
WE DID IT! LOL yee haw...drove around base for several minutes, and man I thought I had seen that whole base, well, I have now! LOL...it's bigger than I had guessed even after eleven years. Ekaha Circle is just one circle, but they do not number the addies as they did when you lived there. Nope, they have addies like "101" and short numbers, so we didn't have a clue as to which fourplex you used to live in, and there were cars home at all of them, though that isn't a large circle, so we went back to the start of the circle, where it meets Menoher, and turned around, snapped a pic or two. Then daughter snapped a pic of where Menoher meets Carpenter St. cuz that looks like it is where you used to leave your neighborhood when riding your bike, then snapped pics of the old exchange, new commissary and OLD commissary building which is now furniture store, and package store.
We will soon download the pics into puter, and attach to an email, and send. Oh gal, there is street after street of OLD housing near where you lived, and surely it looked much nicer twenty years ago. It is depressing, needing mowing, caring and just really run down looking. Not far from there the new housing starts and for example, the Foote Ave. gate, what I call a front gate,. as you drive into base from that, with the gas station to your left, WOW have they built the area up, with even high rise barracks, all brand new brick and very attractive. I drove along there thinking how you will not recognize about half the base or more, there are so many new buildings.
WELL...gotta get the digital out of the car, and let teen do the technical stuff for me. You'll have email soon. Hope you enjoy.

I know a lot of folks, military and otherwise, now living away from the islands are curious about what their old stomping grounds look like today. Setting such a fun example, I'll definitely want to see if I can do some "on assignment" photowork if another similar request or question comes in.

Thanks for saying so, and it does seem like it's the least we can do for anothe person. Our childhood memories are a huge deal.
Let me give you a laugh....I am so glad my teen went along to help, or I would've been like Edith Bunker running around on base, with a digital. LOL..she helped me not get turned around on oh so many little residential streets that I didn't recognize, and she made sure I used the digital properly. (G) I know, I have to stop relying on my daughters for technical stuff, and learn to use it all properly myself, but anyway, I was also glad that with all of our tighter security concerns, I didn't have to explain to anyone why I was snapping pics all over base, while it surely was the right thing to do.
Dang, can I talk a lot, or what? I'll rest your eyes now, and stifle.

Everyone!!!! KAREN ROCKS!!!!
Yes, Karen, those old run down places are still leftover. There was some old stuff when we moved there that was yucky then. There were alot of snotty high falooty types that wouldnt even live in housing, even the nice stuff because they felt it was beneath them, lol.
Another thing I would love to see is this hotel i guess it was that we stayed in when we first got there until our housing was actually ready. I'll have to ask my mom about that as far as its name. We knew before coming that we had a 4 bed, 3 bath waiting tho and went crazy with excitement.
I still have the scar on my knee from coming off the bleachers at the pool and gashing it open. That pool was humongous!!! I wonder if its still the same.

They were like Dr. Scholls only the part you walk on was a chunk of wood and thicker and the outer part of them were painted with amazing tropical type scenes. I cant even imagine what I would have done with the ones I owned after we moved away and obviously my foot would be bigger but seeing how I still have seashells I collected on the shores of Haleiwa....... :( Since the 8o's are coming back into fashion  , I am hoping maybe they were a product of that and might show up somewhere.

Was the inn or hotel you stayed in, upon arriving on island, on base? There is an inn that isn't even eight or so yrs. old, it is quite modern, like an eight days inn or something. I didn't pass it the other day, but if I can recall, it isn't far from the swimming pool.
I haven't seen the pool since I hear they remodeled it, and made it huge. Our daughter's scout troop used it for their swimming badge a few years ago, and not long ago, but she went to the most recent outing, and I didn't attend. She said it really is bigger, and professional like, but I can't describe it since I didn't see it myself.
Wow, did I understand you that you have housing that was four bedroom, three bath? or was that the hotel/inn you were describing?
I am so glad the pics tripped your trigger and are fun to see. Glad some of them do see familiar.
I can't help you with the shoes. There seem to be a zillion types and styles here, now, and I wear the slipons only in my house. I wear SAS shoes when I go anywhere. Maybe someone will read your post and have a suggestion about the shoes of your childhood.
Oh, you mentioned people that thought they were too good to live in base housing. Oh man, stuckup people, the arrogance just turns me off badly! Their bathrooms stinks as badly as anyone's, if you know what I mean, LOL. ( was tempted to say that a lot worse, but kept myself in check) Base housing gives you free electricity and water, even though you actually pay for housing by losing your housing allowances for off base.

THEY WERE CONSTANTLY GRIPING ABOUT THAT AND BEING STUCK ON *THIS ROCK*, THEY COULDNT JUST DRIVE OFF TO SEE MOM AND DAD OR WHATEVER. I MADE A KILLIN BABYSITTING THERE DUE TO THE MILITARY BEING W/O THERE FAMILY TO FILL IN. :D

Aloha howdy, gal!
LOL on the KIX, oh junk cereal leaves one wanting, still so hungry for real nourishment. Thankfully, there are good cereals on the market now.
I understood your previous post, and that you replied fully, thanks. I am guessing that they tore down the old temp. housing, but not sure, unless it was behind Burger King, wait, you may not have seen where that is, sigh. Anyway, the new inn is very nice and modern. I bet people really appreciate it.

LOL, there were definately no fast food joints on base!! I remember riding my trusty ten speed to Wahiawa (to McDonalds) and going thru the drive thru lane on it!!!! :D :D
Their reaction was too funny!!

Okay, if you are in parking lot of the main PX, and facing it, to your far left, just to the right of the PXtra garden center, is a Burger King. Then...face the PXtra garden center, which is perpendicular to main PX, and to the left of the garden center, almost on the street there that ran past the Scout Hut, is a Popeye's Chicken. There is also a food court in the same building as the PX, nothing fancy, but has Dunkin Donuts, Ice cream, forget the name, Pizza Place, subsandwich place, and I think even something else, all very small and pretty old setting, but a nice selection for hunger, or the munchies.

Baskin Robbins and Robin Hood sandwiches. At least that's what was there when I was there 3 1/2 years ago. :)

Oh, i didnt buy tickets, just priced to find it is alot less than i thought. I have to find out how i would be able to get on base (if even possible) first because there would be no need in coming unless i knew that.......

No, he didnt retire. We went to Augusta, GA after a month at home for the holidays. Got a VA home in Augusta in 81 (someone somewhere else said she would find the place and snap a shot but didnt, lol) because housing wasnt available on Ft. Gordon. Grandma was diagnosed with cancer back here at home in 83, the army wouldnt transfer him back here somewhere so he got a discharge. I dont know what his *job* or whatever was but I remember they werent treating him real well anyway with some weight issues so I guess it wasnt a big loss. Grandma lived until 97 by the way.

After wrong numbers and calling the library and searching more online, i finally found a working number and was told it is as simple as handing them my idea at the entrance of Lyman Gate, letting them search me out/run warrant type thing maybe and off I go! I might be on a moped or motorcycle however, lol but we'll see!!!!!!! OMG, i cant waiiiiiitt!!!!

I was told all i had to do was show ID to get on base and if that is true then i am curious to know if i would be able to shop at the PX or commisary as a non-military person. Karen would know but I guess she is no longer visiting here.

I think it depends on the base and on what "alert level" is in place at the time. I know that I've been able to get onto "open posts" (i.e. Hale Koa) with just my state driver's license, and have driven onto Kaneohe with such an I.D. check as well. Heck, for major events, Kaneohe's been wide open, without even a cursory glance at the gate!
However, I'm pretty sure you can't make use of base ameneties - including the commissary and PX, and rental/use of facilities - without a military ID.

I used to watch them, they barely looked up sometimes.........i hope that it goes that way for me, all i wanna do is see the ole homestead, lol.......i have pics of the area that i will be carrying with me but my mom has this hilarious notion that i am gonna get pitched in jail when they find me walking along the sidewalk behind where we lived or whatever. I'm like *mom!* Good lord, its not like i am planting bombs.

Hi, Memory!
Been very busy this month, but glad I found your last few posts. Our 20yr. old daughter moved back home from California the first part of Oct, and I hadn't seen her in over a year, so I haven't been online much, except for email, news & the forum I moderate at, and then only enough to feel I contributed. Wow, life is good, we are a family of four again, and the weeks are flying by.
No, you can't shop on base without a valid military ID. You can eat at the fast food places, but nothing else. I am so dang glad for you that you get to come here. I know it'll mean a lot to you.
Glad I peeked in, and they say dinner is ready, so I best close the window here & put this thing to sleep. You are still welcome to email me if you still have the addy. Have a safe election and holiday season.
God bless~

I can strike up conversations with the best of them, lol.........then i'll ask someone if they'll just run my stuff thru with theirs and hand them some cash, tehhehe.........i'm only half kidding.
Thats cool about your daughter moving back! Most people would be saying there goes my sewing/rec/spare room, lol.
My brother kind of invited himself along but thats okay i guess, i'll have someone to rant about everything too. Oh lord, i cannot wait!!!!!!!!!

Hi I am new to this site. I use to live in Hawaii. I left the Islands in 1985. I lived in Makaha. I fell in love with Hawaii and its culture. I now live in El Paso, Texas. My husband is Navy Reserve. This is his 2nd tour over there. It is good to be intouch with people that share my same interest and love for the culture and aloho spirit. Once you have experienced this it never leaves your soul.
A hui ho,
Kenike
