Though it's a purely personal preference, I'm not a fan of animated GIFs. Fortunately, even with the present file size limit, there are lots of animated images folks have been able to use (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/memberlist.php?) here. If you can fit a whole web site in 5k (http://www.the5k.org/), surely you can find an avatar that can do the macarena in 19k! :)
