Seen any clever ones? Strange ones? Do you have one? If you had a car and had to pick your license plate, what would you have it say?

Hawaii's six-character limit is somewhat confining (many other states give you seven to play with). But the especially creative can still come up with some fun things. I saw a hybrid Prius today with the plate, "CLN AIR."

I have two cars both with vanity plates:

WH--LS (two blanks) Buy a vowel

WH LS2 for my other car

How did you get two blanks on your plate? I thought they were unusually stingy with spaces and dashes and how they can be used. That's cool. I had a special plate when I had a collector's car... a 1979 Hurst/Olds W-30 with the plate "79 W30" (though I doubt many people knew what it meant).

Today's sighting: An emphatically expensive black Mercedes with the plate "NYSE." Guess he survived the dot-com bomb!

I don't have a vanity plate, and I don't really want one. Buf if I had to have one, I'd probably go for a Kikaida reference. DBLCHP, or maybe DNJEND. :D

When I applied for it (back in 1984) there were six blanks to fill, so I filled the first and last two. They accepted it then.

In Reader's Digest there was a quip about a middle aged man who was tired with his image so his vanity plate was to mean "18 Again" and it came out I8AGN. His son came home and told his dad, "Cool license plate...I ate again"

When I bought my BMW I wanted LOVNIT but it was already taken! So was 6BOYS, so I opted for a continuation of my Wheels plate WH LS2

The best I saw was on a Toyota when during the 80's it was a war between the VW Bugs and the Toyota SR5's. The Toyota's plate was "RAID" and underneath it said, "Bug Killer".

On a Porche tooling towards Kahala on the freeway was IXLR8. My friend's Turbo/Nitrous VW Rabbit was I8AZ28.

This morning, I just saw a Scion xB with the license plate "bntobx" (bento box)

I thought that was the perfect name for it, as that car is a box on wheels.

What other weird license plates you've seen on a car?

A long time ago (either in 1990 or 1991) while visiting the Bay Area I was crossing the Bay Bridge (the one that runs from Oakland to San Francisco) and the car in front of me had a plate that said SETPRV, which happen to be one of the privileges available to a username under the VMS operating system. While I took a picture of that car I didn't manage to get the license plate in the photo.

I thought it said Set Perv! Still didn't make any sense to me. The funniest one was one I read in Reader's Digest where this middle age heavy set man bought a new car and put on a vanity plate to say: 18 Again. It read 18AGN. His teenage son tells his dad, "Cool license plate...I ate again"

My two cars have license plates that read:

Car 1: WH__LS with two underscores between the H and the L. When people ask me what that means I tell them to buy a vowel: WHeeLS and this plate is on my AstroVan, initially on my Scirrocco back in 1988.

Car 2: WH_LS2 that is currently on my BMW.

My friend had a license plate on his Turbocharged/Nitrious powered VW Rabbit: I8AZ28

Another good one was on a Toyota SR5 back in the Toy Boy vs VW Bug boys days of the 80's and 90's: RAID as in bug killer.

I SWEAR. I saw it on Maunakea Street years ago, passing the DMV when it was over there. My husband and I discussed how incredibly stupid the bureacrat who authorized it must have been. It was on a 60s convertible outta Detroit, a big hunk of metal. ClASSy!
Now who would go out on a date with this guy? Who would marry a guy with a plate like that on his car? And yet, he advertises his sexual prowess. What kind of guy needs that on his plate?

But I don't get the No TIX PLS one. TIX as in ticks cuz I wouldn't want any either.

I saw a car pulled over with a cop giving the guy a ticket. His license plate said: EX CON yeah not a good license plate to have and getting a ticket at the same time.

But David Shutter's car (bancrupt defense attorney who got kicked out of jail because he was giving convicts free get out of jail advice) was a gold Rolls Royce with plates that said: SUE EM

It's how you justify the acronym. When I was in the Air Force, some guy got a license plate that said: FTAF. The base commander told him he had to replace it with something derogatory other than F@#K The Air Force.

The puzzled airman said it meant: Fly The American Flag

He got to keep his license plate even though it really did mean F@#K The Air Force. :D

Last night (Friday) on the way home from work at about 1:30 a.m. (OK, early this morning, in the usual heavy Friday night traffic), I pulled up to the stoplight in front of Zippy's on Nimitz. I heard a bunch of whooping and yelling and looked to my right -- a carload of boys drunk enough to be excited about a woman on a Harley. I grinned and waved, they whooped some more, waving their heads and arms out the windows in my direction, and when the light changed, they pulled away and I saw the license plate: DRY HEV.

I almost fell of my bike laughing, thinking about the guy filling out that form at the motor vehicles dept. and handing it to the nice lady behind the counter. Her wondering, "What does 'dry hev' mean? Well, I guess it's OK ..."

Two pointless plates I saw recently: SXY LXS and MINI C (on a BMW Mini Cooper).

The "SXY LXS" was the usual boring but functional Toyota sedan. Not a bad car, although a tad overpriced, but certainly not sexy in the least.

The "Mini C" was ... a Mini C. Cute car, love 'em, but why bother having a vanity plate if it just repeats what the logo says two feet to the right of the plate?

For my birthday many years ago, my parents bought me personalized plates with my real name on them. Well, you can't bitch about it. I drove 'em for a couple of years, cringingly embarrassed, and thankful I wasn't driving a getaway car, and then quetly changed 'em to something anonymous.

My husband the retired cop has a PT Cruiser, and I got him the plate that says COP OUT. In British Columbia we must stay with 6 letters, and no commas, or quotation marks allowed.

By the way, my VW Bug has cost me nothing but money, and I will NEVER buy another one! Hubby is happy with PT Cruiser....but that's all another subject.

Yeah, just like the Jews during the Hitler years in Germany. Better keep it hidden from the marching robots. You don't want to go around having all that freedom of religious expression, especially in a public forum such as HT. It could lead to multiculturalism, democracy, open exchange of ideas ... all kinds of dangerous stuff.

Very kewl!

That could mean several things:
1.) An obvious spin-off of Manapua (a.k.a. Chinese Hamburger)
2.) He's broke now from the car payments, hence mini---pua (poor)
3.) She likes mini skirts and she's "pua" from the car payments
4.) She drives a mini and her name is Pua (short for Pualani or Flower of Heaven)

There must be COUNTLESS vanity plate spins of "mini" on MiniCoopers around the world.

Speaking of MiniCooper, just seen they're gonna' introduce a Mini-SUV. Nice design!

After shipping my almost-brand new '72 Datsun 510 from Honolulu to the Bay Area, I got KIMO U because I started calling myself Kimo. Since then, that plate has jumped from that Datsun to a '92 Toyota pickup truck then to my latest car, a '97 Toyota RAV4. During my travels through NV, ID, OR & WA, I periodically get the shaka. The KCCN license plate holder probably doesn't hurt.

Oh, yeah, when I bought my '78 Lancia Beta coupe, I got RANCIA for my plate. I claimed to be Italian for so long that I wanted to reclaim my Asian heritage.

Okay OT but I was sitting in my car in the Home Depot Parking lot when I glanced out of my rear view mirror to see the emblem SUBARU on a Forrester. Backwards it read YOU ARE A BUS. Get it? URABUS. That would be an interesting vanity plate I'd love to see on a Subaru.

For some reason, we have lots o Hummers on our island. I saw a bright yellow one the other day. It reminded me of a school bus. Probably need a 7 letter plate to spell that so everybody would get it.

Easy...you don't. Actually you simply transfer the plates to another car that you own then transfer it back to your new car. Yeah right...easy for me as I own four cars.

But since we're on that subject, my kid hauler Astrovan has my WH__LS plates on it. I've kept that license plate since putting on my now defunct 1984 VW Scirocco where the WHEELS plate made sense.

Once I saw this Red Miata with the plates: L-L RED. The owner put a short vertical black line under the hyphen to make his plate read: LiL RED.

My WH__LS plate is actuall listed in DMV as WH LS with two blanks between the H and the L. I used black tape to make two underscores in the blank areas. When people ask what does my plate say, I tell them to buy a vowel like the letter E.

There's lots of advantages in anonymity vs. calling attention to your car. I once declined an offer of "free" gold lettering on my new car. The chrome lettering from the manufacturer was good enough for me!

Your car might not get stolen, but acts of vandalism are all too common these days. Often fueled by jealousy and envy.

Similarly, I don't favor cars like a Benz, BMW, Audi, or Porsche. I'm more inclined toward Japanese imports like Honda, Toyota, Mazda, etc. 4-door sedans with automatic transmissions - my five-speed stick shift days are long past.

so was it a 4runner or tacoma? either way, flip or not, if the owner meant to spell "your fart" in tagalog or ilocano, s/he spelled it wrong. should have been "utotmo," which, by the way, is still available for use, as is "obetmo" (your as*), "ukimo," (your err, flower, if you are female) "lateg" (peenie--or so i'd guess from how my mom & gramma used that word) and "urmot" (pewb).

Wait a minute. You're correct until that last step. Union means "or." Intersection means "and."

If set A = {abcde} and set B = {defgh},
Then AUB includes any item appearing in at least one set, so AUB = {abcdefgh}. In other words AUB means A or B. So 2BU-2B would be "to be OR not to be."

Boy, you Iolani grads. You learn it all for the test and then nothing sticks after graduation!

A coworker bought a Volkswagen Rabbit when they first came out. He got the plate “WABBIT” and above the plate he put the letters “KWAZY”.

In Colorado I saw a Corvette with the plate “55HAHA”. He was very carefully following the speed limit.

Spotted recently on H1; “H8MYEX”. That must have been a bitter divorce.

My plate just cuts down on the number of people that ask what kind of car it is.

Couple NH plates I saw recently..Mahalo and Haleiwa
Swapped shaka's with da couple in the car with Haleiwa plates!

This past weekend, I saw someone driving a Volvo station wagon with NOKAOI embossed on Rhode Island plates. It wouldn't be a weird plate in HI, but around here, not too many know the meaning of that phrase. I have also seen HAWAII as well on a RI plate.

I know a couple folks in the NE Hawaiian club who live in RI....hmmm...

I seem to remember reading somewhere (Reader’s Digest?) about a guy that had the plate “NONE”. When he received a parking ticket the officer dutifully filled in the blank for License Plate No. as NONE.

When he went to court he was hit with a fine for not having a license plate. Every time he tried to correct the problem it required filling out forms that ask for the plate number which in turn got the same response. Nobody could grasp the idea that a valid plate would have the word NONE on it.
