I have my own email server which runs on a Sun Ultra 10 running Solaris 9. I mainly use the ones above for spam buckets

LavaNet, of course.

I do have email accounts at Hotmail, Yahoo, and some other places but very rarely use them.

Strange thing is, I have one email account which I have NEVER used but it gets hundreds of spam mails each week.

Hmmmm, if you create a UNIX .forward file to dev/null, does that work?

Eudora 6.1. I have others set up as personalities within it, and gmail forwards to it.

Yes, that should work just fine.

Anybody know how to get around or work with Verizon Business E-mail's authentication requirement for SMTP? I've set up a new personality in Eudora, but I can't seem to send/receive. I keep getting authentication required errors.

It's weird. I have another Verizon DSL account and I have never had any trouble with it, but this new one doesn't work. I've tried creating a new mail personality by copying existing settings from the other Verizon account, but it still doesn't take.

That's kind of cutting off the nose to spite the face. Maybe you should consider setting up greylising instead. It's cut the spam on my mail server to almost nothing. If you're not familiar with the concept, it works thusly: the SMTP specification mandates that an MTA should attempt to retry after a certain period if the remote mail server rejects the message or is down. Most spam clients won't do this, as it would make them too easy to track down. With greylistng, the MTA rejects the first delivery attempt from a new mail server, deferring for 300 seconds. An RFC compliant mail server will attempt to re-deliver, and when it does, the mail is accepted, and the sender address is added to the greylist. Future messages from that sender are accepted without delay. It's pretty groovy. I'm implementing this with postfx + postgrey. The installation and configuration are pretty trivial.

That's an interesting approach. Sure boosts the size of the queue and increases network traffic, but versus the mountainload of spam, it's probably insignificant.

I have addresses affiliated with each of my two dozen or so domains, though only a few are real mailboxes and the rest just redirect. My primary online e-mail address is Gmail, and I'm slowly converting most of my Hotmail and Yahoo! friends. My primary "real" address is on my server and allows IMAP, which is great for checking mail from different locations (including my phone).

Has anyone tried Windows Live Mail Beta? Is it any good? There are so many email provider options now, I'm confused as to which one to use (I have several). Which email provider do you think is best and why?

iav.com (first ISP account, 12 years of e-mail)
hcc.hawaii.edu (seldom checked ... 1st 90s Internet e-mail account)
yahoo.com (for all my Yahoo stuff)
hawaii.rr.com (for "important" stuff)
opihi.com (my own domain, which is spam filled)
work
gmail.com (primary now)

Although people do send me PMs here, on Ohanalanai, via myspace.com. Never had a hotmail.com account.

Microsoft Live Mail is basically their replacement for Hotmail, right? Full of Ajax-y interface goodness? It's their answer to Gmail, I'd imagine, and if it's coupled well with Outlook/Outlook Express, I'm pretty sure they'll give Google a good fight.

Since I posted last August, I've definitely fallen completely into the Gmail camp. I check it most often. I still have my "main" addresses on my own domain, for important correspondence, but most conversations now flow through the hungry maw of Google.

I'm also happy that UH has so far let me hold onto my account there. Not counting a long-forgotten all-digits Compuserve account, it's my oldest e-mail inbox. It mostly overflows with spam until I remember to clear it out, but every so often an old contact will reach me there.

I wasn't sure if Microsoft Live Mail was a replacement for hotmail or just an alternative. Right now, they are giving us an option to sign up for Live Mail (as opposed to dead mail? ) not saying that we have to convert. I have a couple of gmail accounts but have always been wary of gmail since it admits that it scans email content for targeted ads. I know, not that I say anything that interesting anyhow and the other email providers probably do the same but aren't as up front about it, but still... :p

I hadn't been aware of Live Mail till now. Apparently it's what used to be start.com, which was bought and then retooled by Microsoft.

Hotmail users can stick with their addresses, but Microsoft is giving up on the Hotmail brand and new users are being pointed to Live.com (where free webmail is only a small part of the overall picture). That's where most of the development is being focused.

I didn't even know about some of the improvements made to Hotmail in parallel with Windows Live Mail development. I guess making it look more like Outlook makes for a more consistent user experience, but for me that's not really a plus.

Oh my, Outlook is so 90's :), you really need to upgrade and get
Mozilla Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/)

I've been using Windows Live Mail beta for about 2-3 months. It's fairly neat and user-friendly, but you might have some lags if the computer specs are not so high. I wouldn't say it's an upgrade from Hotmail, but next generation of Hotmail (just like the iPod?)

The e-mails won't show any type of images unless you allow the sender (or add them in your contact list).

You can always opt out if you don't like the beta, so give it a try.

I use it with MSN and Live.com, it's pretty good. If you do get to try live.com, it's really useful.

Because you can see everything from your daily horoscope, your Hotmail, stock quote, local news, international news, tech stuff, sports news, your favorite sports team scores, cooking recipes, etc on one page. (you can set it up to as much tabs you want, just like the new Internet Explorer 7)

I know yeah? I'm already using Firefox and got my feet wet in Ubuntu, so why should I use more open source software? I'll play with it soon.

Anyway back on topic, my primary e-mail through Hawaiian Telcom.

I've got HT. But Verizon ticked me off my selling. From what I've read, I'm thinking the owners are going to do their "business magic" and sell out. So I moved my primary email to GMail. Now I can change ISPs (or have them sold out from under me) without any more hassle.

Thats how I survived when the Verizon/HT transition happened, by using Gmail
during the interim
