Lite-On DVD-Recorder

I got the DVD-Recorder today as a early Christmas present from my parents. It can record both from TV and VCR.
It can use DVD-/+R and CD-R/RW.

What is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R? Can both types of discs be played back on a standard DVD player?

This particular DVD Recorder can read and write to CD-R/RW, DVD-/+R/RW
by the way. It was on sale at Kmart yesterday for 159.99.
