Exit polls indicate that Mahmoud Abbas, the favorite candidate of the US and the Europeans, has been elected the new President of the Palestinean Authority by at least 65% of the electorate. Abbas has pledged to renew peace talks with Israel and Israeli President Ariel Sharon is expected to meet with him soon. Israel today holds more than 7,000 Palestineans in jail for assorted reasons and will release them provided the Palestineans agree to stop launching rockets at kibbutzim.
Maybe after four years of bloodshed, peace can finally be restored to the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
