Yes, it's true - they are totally horrible. They can be like 90dB @ 5 meters. I was house shopping rencetly, and (thank god) got to one place we were looking at just at nightfall. While we were looking around, they started chirping. Needless to say, I grabbed my girl and my broker and got the hell out of there.

Addenedum: forgot to mention, this was in town on the Hilo side.

Coqui, mosquitoes, neighborhood punks, etc. :p

Ok, I'm not trying to get funny here but when this came out, I was and still am personally upset, not because of the Frogs in general. However, the very next day our Legislators were spending time discussing in the practice of consuming dogs and cats. Now, am I wrong to be upset due to advocating against Illegal Activities and Drugs and find it appalling that frogs, dogs and cats take precedence over the elimination that is is rapidly destroying Hawai'i nei as a whole. There is no family that is not untouched by it's destruction. If they say they are, they're not telling the TRUTH! Frogs, eating dogs and cats? We'll be all eating them if the Drugs eventually take over the islands!

Just imagine a bunch of frogs that keep the iceheads up even longer. :pjust hit the news; iceheads, running out of drugs now and then as they do, have found a secretion from frogs that offers a mind altering narcotic effect.

and in other news, possibly related, no reports of any sound or noise, from any frogs of any kinds, anywhere, for some unknown reason.

one or two coqui isn't a problem, three or four is quite entertaining, 200 to 300 is enough to put a gun to your head!

I say we catch em all and send them back to Puerto Rico where they love the sound of them little pests, and we can send them our B-52 roaches as well.

Imagine a 3-year old saying Co-Key with an emphasis on Key then imagine an entire pre-school of 3-year olds saying that right outside your bedroom window from sundown to sun up. Pretty soon it sounds like a bunch of kids yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs forever and I mean Forrrrrreeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Then the sun comes up and the Myna Birds take over.

The only good sound out of a Coqui frog is the sound of their chirp when you squish one with your big black rubbah sliippah!

Lime OK’d for use against coqui frogs (http://starbulletin.com/2005/04/28/news/story4.html)
Rod Thompson, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Thursday, April 28, 2005
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved the use of hydrated lime to kill coqui frogs in Hawaii for the next three years... Lime costs about one-tenth as much as the next-best coqui killer approved to date, citric acid."That's good news," said Billy Kenoi, Big Island Mayor Harry Kim's anti-coqui assistant... A few people actually enjoy the high-pitched call of male coquis, but with coquis reaching 12,000 per acre in some places, others are worried about a biological disaster... Hawaii County is continuing to seek up to $2 million this legislative session to control the frogs, [Kenoi] said. There's also a sidebar about how a guy at UH found a way to trap the frogs with old PVC pipes (http://starbulletin.com/2005/04/28/news/story4.html#jump).

Where I live in Kona, the Coqui haven't invaded yet. Probably because of
there is a lot of houses around where I live and the environment is not conducive for them.

The Croqui frogs make noise. In Germany, the toads there are EXPLODING! per http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7654561/?GT/=6428

Maybe, we need to bring in some crows? ;)

Well it's getting pretty dry down by the ocean where I live. Recently you could hear the coqui getting closer to us with the recent bit of rain we were encountering, however we haven't had any rain in these parts for over four days already and things are drying out hence the coqui frogs have backed off as well.

Anybody seen a good water wagon lately? My tanks are getting a bit lean.

So I heard that the state legislature only allocated $200k for the coqui problem...FOR THE ENTIRE STATE. Looks like we're going to be living with the little bastards for a while.
