Maybe it's because I have access to free movie rentals through work that I haven't seen the inside of a movie theater in a long time. But most of my movie viewing happens at home. So ... what have you been watching from the comfort of you sofa/futon/floor/etc.?

Lemme start things off ...

The Triplets of Bellville -- I don't remember which animation award it won -- Oscar or Cannes. A really interesting film, but not kid's fare, though.
Garden State -- You know you watch too much Law & Order when you can spot all the New York actors in this film. Zach Braff wears my hair better than I do.
Trembling Before G-d -- A documentary about gay Orthodox Jews. How does a person remain devoted to a religion that reviles them?
The Elegant Universe -- Actually, this is a NOVA documentary, but man is that string theory wacky!
200 American -- A no-budget film I saw at a film festival about two years ago. A pretty good screenplay, but I wish it weren't shot on digital.

We love Netflix (http://www.netflix.com). With three kids, it's our only infusion of cinematic anything outside of animated features. We fell off the wagon for several months when the latest baby came, but we're back to one or two weekly again. (You can see our 100+ movie queue online (http://www.lightfantastic.org/imr/extras/netflix/).) The latest discs:

Shrek 2 - Fun and overflowing with pop culture references. Probably enjoyed more by parents than kids.
Mean Girls - Not bad. Though I think the positive comparisons to "Heathers" are undeserved.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Enjoyed it a lot. Keeps you thinking even after it's over. Just wish there were fewer subplots.
If you include all DVDs watched, I'd have to add the Barbie "Princess & The Pauper" movie. Don't ask.

Recently watched:

Collateral (Jamie Foxx, Tom Cruise) - I was surprised that I liked it. Not so much the plot, but the characters were engaging. Two extremes evolve toward the middle.
Spiderman 2 (Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst) - They say it was better than the first, but I'm not so sure. Though I barely remember the first. It was a popcorn flick trying to be serious drama. It felt funny.
Ah, Netflix. Anyone else use the service?

I have a Blockbuster Movie Pass. My latest viewings:

King Arthur: Excellent action, medieval war drama movie. I liked the new take on the legend.

The Notebook: Sentimental movie that practiced some restraint with the melodrama. I loved every minute of this predictable, sappy romance.

The Simpsons: I'm not a fan, but the kids & husband love it. I pretend to watch it while secretly working on our tax return.

Vanity Fair: Better than the Masterpiece Theater version. Witherspoon was surprisingly convincing in the role of an English, high-society wannabe.

Cellular: Fast-paced, action-packed movie that entertains. The ability to suspend your disbelief is required, however.

This is one of the most underrated movies of 2004. I saw this at the theater when it came out last summer and am the proud owner of the DVD. Camelot this is not. It is way better!

* Short Circuit - Ally Sheedy ($5 DVD from Walmart)

One of my favorite movies of all time and one that I quote often. I am a librarian and can relate to the scene where #5 is scanning Stephanie's bookshelves and says: 'Need more input! More input, Stephanie!'

The sequel was so lousy I can barely remember anything about it, though.

I still have the Blockbuster Movie Pass. It's more expensive than renting online, but I have a better chance of getting the latest DVD rentals by going to the store on Tuesday afternoon when their new releases arrive.

The Incredibles: 4.5 out of 5
Intelligent, witty, and just plain cool--but should have been slimmed down by 30 minutes.

The Final Cut: 2.5 out of 5
A dud of a movie that had an interesting premise but did very little with it. And Robin Williams needs to lose that constipated facial expression he uses in dramatic roles.

After the Sunset: 3 out of 5
Decent entertainment. And if you don't care for the storyline, your consolation is 2 gorgeous actors to behold: not Woody Harrelson, but rather Salma Hayek and Pierce Brosnan.

Ladder 49: 4 out of 5
This is a beautiful tribute to firefighters, making clear that they put their lives on the line for us. Be clear, though, that this film is one-dimensional--all firefighters are saints.

The Shoes of the Fisherman: 4.5 out of 5
This movie shows its age, having been made in the 60s and released in 1968, yet it is a timely movie in that it explains the process of the election of a pope. I found it also inspiring, though, as it tells the story of an archbishop who has been a prisoner in a Siberian labor camp and is finally released and sent to the Vatican. He becomes a Cardinal, and then, despite the fact that he is Russian and not Italian, and due to his amazing piety, humility and compassion, is elected as the next pope. The backdrop of the movie--an impending war between China and the Soviet Union and marital discord between a doctor and a newsreporter--is a bit cheesy, but the beautiful story of Kiril Lakota made me forgiving. Also, the movie has an interesting cast: Anthony Quinn, David Janssen, John Gielgud, Oskar Werner, and Laurence Olivier.

The Shoes of the Fisherman is extremely hard to find. Count yourself lucky if you can find it at a rental store.

1. "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason"
Colin Firth and Hugh Grant who can ask for anything more?

2. "Flight of the Phoenix" (The recent one)
I haven't seen the original, but this movie was painfully awful. I love Dennis Quaid, but the dialogue was awkward and the storyline was choppy.

3. "Garden State"
I don't get it and it worries me. Does this mean I'm not young anymore and full of angst?

4. "Sideways"
I'm a new fan of Sandra Oh. Brilliant, brilliant movie. It makes me want to to take up wine tasting- except I don't like wine.

5. "Pride and Prejudice"
I watch this at least once a month. I'm a Jane Austen fan, and Colin Firth isn't bad either (see #1)

2. Shark Tale -- didn't hold my attention

3. Shaolin Soccer -- amusing, some outrageously funny scenes

4. Troy -- incredible eye candy

5. Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie -- very funny clean comedy

since you have free access to movie rentals, would you give me your list of top ten martial arts movies but without including titles that everyone's seen (like crouching tiger)???

i'm interested in the movies that most people never heard of but which are known by people into martial arts movies. not a great example, but i like ong bak, the movie out of thailand. the guy is awesome and did all his own scenes + no wires/special effects. great fight scenes.

i think you're in a great position to give me some advice on what to rent or buy online.

thanks!

Starting with most recent:
Coupling, Series 2 -- Funny and silly, but not as interesting or as fresh or as creative as Series 1.
Baadasssss! -- Fascinating, enlightening, and impressive.
Coupling, Series 1 -- Terrific. Hilarious. Edgy. Sexy.
The Office, Second Series -- Just as interesting as and even more pathetic (in the literal sense) than the first series. Sorta depressing, actually.
The Office, First Series -- One of the most original things I've ever seen on the tube. Nothing like it.
