The old Waikiki III Theater on Kalakaua is being torn down to build a new retail center that will house a California Pizza Kitchen, Foot Locker, a Whaler's Market, 80 kiosks and an unnamed seafood restaurant.

It's sad when landmark buildings get torn down to make way for new construction. But at least the developers are preserving the theater's neon sign and grilles to reuse on the new complex. There are also going to be movie-related displays within the complex.

Oh boy! More retailing opportunities for the tourists in Waikiki! ;)

JUST finished reading that in da pepah.

One more nail in the coffin.
Many complaints over the years, and it just gets worse;
from visitors;
basically, Waikiki is one big mall. (maul?) Fairly indistinguishable from all the other malls in too many generic cities across the nation. Overfull with multinational mainland corporate chain presence.
Planners, developers, all continually aping the phrase; "we are creating a sense of place". But then simply erect more ugly modern temples dedicated to the gods of crass conspicuous consumerism and the pursuit of the Almighty... dollar.
And in the process, destroy any vestige of what is "outdated, old style, worn out" kill off completely, what spelled old Hawaii to many kama'aina and malihini alike.

Oh, but hey! They put Hawaiian style chevrons in the design. And as another concession, they are using the old Waikiki theatre signage!
whoopy frikken doooo.
