  • Ethnic humor still PC?

Recently at my workplace Hilo High on the Big Island we had a workshop about what can be said at the workplace and can't(this came about when some football coaches used ethnic slurs at a player). The DOE specialist speaking to the entire staff said comedy like "Frank deLima and the Braddahs" is not funny and hurts people's feeling nowdays. Frank used to deliver messages to Hawaii's school children and meant no racial harm...are we as a society so uptight that we can't take a joke anymore?

I know racial and sexual harrasment in wrong anytime and doesn't belong in the workplace...but in a wonderful place like Hawaii's melting pot can't we laugh at ourselves?
BTW...for you O'ahu people what kind of act does Frank do now?

(Rolling on my kitchen floor!) Thanks for this thread you started! I live @ Mayor Wrights (as if nobody knows already), it's not like before but sometimes it can be worse. Talk about being in a melting pot? I'm smack in the middle of Micro Dots (Micronesians), Sole's (Samoans), Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Potoricans, and a few Local's. I use ethnic humor all the time as this is what they seem to understand. They laugh, I laugh, things get done. Our section is clean and our area the safest due to all our watchful eyes and ears. I grumble about living here when I get upset at things, like the Meintenance Crew not respecting our rights as tenants and nothing gets done about it. Still, Living @ MWH has given me the opportunity to learn first hand the various ways of the people that make our islands unique. Yep, big big difference in ethnic jokes vs racial slurs. One you laugh, the other you can die! As far as Frank Delima, he's always playing somewhere. Braddah never runs out of funny things to say. Hmmm, maybe he visit's all the housing areas for ideas! I use to think he went to Kalihi and Waipahu for his Filipino jokes!HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Have a great week everybody!

Far as I can tell, his act hasn't changed much in years. I imagine it's been "cleaned up" a little, but jokes and gags based on ethnicities and racial stereotypes still constitute 80 percent of his material.

The other 20 percent, sadly, is unrelenting and somewhat depressing shillling for his CDs, T-shirts, and other products, which will be available for sell outside after the show!

I recently saw a show by Greg Hammer, and I thought it was interesting. He did a lot of great impressions, and made some good music, but even he spent 20 minutes joking about Filipino and other cultures. I don't think you can make it as a performer here without ethnic humor.

It should be noted, though, that there is a difference between what comes out of the mouth of someone who is hired to entertain and is known for this kind of humor, and what might come out of the mouth of an educator or administrator in the heat of passion.

Eh 808, at least you're not like the newcomers from the mainland who got really scared when they saw the following sign: HAUOLI EXTERMINATORS...

              Hahaha!

As a little kid, I remember seeing a business with the name "Hauoli Cleaners". It made me wonder whether they were that much dirtier than other people that they needed a special cleaning service.
