Gotta love the new ad for Coca-Cola: "You put da lime in da Coke, you nut..."
:D
So the trivia questions are, of course:
What's the name of the original song being copied in the ad... and who wrote and performed the original song?
Bonus point for also getting the year it was released.
No prizes, but!
:p

Only 17 minutes until the correct answers! Good job, Kimo. Did you actually know it or did ya Google it? I'm betting you knew it was Nilsson and Goggled the rest.
As for cover versions, it's been done a ton of times. They're listed on the site you posted ( http://www.harrynilsson.com )
One of the covers was by the Muppets (which also reminds me of the Muppet episode with Harry Belafonte doing the "Banana Boat Song" with Kermit and Miss Piggie on a 'tropical' set... an absolutely classic piece of television!).
Anyway, props to Coke for using the song for the new spot!
:D

I disagree that this is a good commercial--it's clever, but it's annoying as hell.

I completely agree about that Muppets number. It is definitely one of the classics, especially with Kermit's distinct "Doctor!" leading the way (the song is sung as a round, if you're not familiar with it).

The Belafonte number was great, too, but the all-time greatest is the Paul Simon number, "Scarborough Fair," with Miss Piggy singing the "parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme" lines while a procession of Muppets in medieval costumes follows Paul through an elaborate stage-set of fruit carts, haywagons, and other assorted brilliance.

Additional Trivia:

While the song appeared on the 1971 "Nilsson Schmillson" album, it was not released as a single until the late spring of 1972. It charted the Billboard Hot 100 that summer I believe. The song was the second single off the album, the first being "Without You," which I think went to #1 on the Hot 100. That song was a cover of a song done earlier by the group Badfinger. The original album was released on the RCA label. Anyone remember the old "Dynaflex" LPs issued by RCA?

Dynaflex, wasn't that the thin, light and flimsy record that RCA released? I believe I have a couple of those albums in my record collection. I do have Neilson Schmillson album, was that done on Dynaflex? Now I need to go home and check...

Okay, Mel, I'm sure you'll get this one but maybe others will have to scratch their heads: What was the name of the dog in the famous RCA logo showing the dog listening to the gramophone?

Yes. Exactly. Dynaflex was that thing flimsy record. It was billed as the world's only warp-free disc at the time. RCA released many titles on this kind of vinyl in the 1970s. I think the version of Nilsson Schmillson was a late pressing that featured the record. I had several John Denver, an Elvis Presley, Jimmy Castor Bunch and David Bowie albums in Dynaflex. Most of them featured the generic yelllow-orange RCA label without Nipper the dog staring into the Grammaphone.
