I have a friend who is looking for a song, doesn't know the title or who did it just knows that it was on one of the Homegrown albums, now my question is how many of those where made and can you still buy them?

As far as I can remember ......four homegrown albums were made. IMO only HG1 and HG2 are worth looking for. For those of you on O'ahu ... the radio station who put them out is the best bet to find them( I can't remember the name).

Homegrown albums were put out by KKUA in the Mid 70's. This was during the Ron Jacobs era at KKUA. If you are looking to obtain those albums, your best bet would be to check out Jellys. They usually have an album or two. This is probably one example where you wouldn't get them cheaper than the original price of 69 cents, which is what the first album sold for back in the mid 70's. 69 was the radio frequency of KKUA.

Wow I was just thinking about the Homegrown album (the first one) just the other day. The only songs from HG1 that remember off the top of my head are Oh Why Leave (loved the riffs and it sounded so backyard jammy) and Makapuu (which sounded kinda corny but I believe one person played all the instruments and sang all the parts... which was a technical wonder back then.)

I still have the first 2 or 3 albums at my mom's house. if cannot get then someday I can try to make a copy on CD or something. so many great songs, not polished up but "pure" musical efforts. is this not where Noelani Cypriano (sp) got her start, signing that jazzy tune "Lihue"! check um out
how's the song go your friend like? one of my favs besides the ones already mentioned is E Ho'opili Mau I Ku'upu'uwai! Love it! Country Living Hawaii! Fujimura Store! oh so many good song.

I have those albums still, from the old days!
Got a quicktime clip of a gal buying the hibiscus cover Homegrown album from DJ's Sound City. 1977 film footage used in a tv commercial, I believe...
Sure looks like makai side ground level ala moana shopping center. or some other mall. Don't remember where they were located, tho i hung out there alot...
The clerk has dozens and dozens of 45's on the wall behind him.
too cool...
Talked with my buddy RJ today and he reminds me habilitat handles the album now:

Even though I grew up in Hawai'i, and presume myself to be something of a music afficionado, the only Homegrown I can recall is a punk-ska outfit from So-Cal that my old band played with here and on the mainland. They had a flash in the pan single called "Surfer Girl" or something. I'd love to hear some of the 1st Homegrown, if only to stoke the fires of a barely smoldering memory.

Just a thought... Do you think Homegrown could work now? I mean sure we have talent in the islands ...but how many can write an original song? Maybe Jack Johnson. I think the most bands in Hawaii are "wedding singer, cover bands". Speaking of feeling old, does anyone still have the KIKI Brownbags to Stardom albums? Talk about classic...Tia Carrae(sp) aka Althea Janniro(sp) on Brown Bags 2! :p

There are a lot more bands out there than cover bands, though those are the ones you'll encounter most often at weddings and festivals. Heck, just browse some of the scrappy, independent musicians in Hawaii who set up profiles at MySpace (http://www.myspace.com). Bookmark 808Shows.com (http://www.808shows.com/). I even feature independent artists on my dorky podcast (http://www.hawaiiup.com). I'm always amazed and impressed with the wide range of styles and sounds we've got out here... and I don't even go to clubs or gigs!

I remember going to DJs Sound City (Exactly where Kimo remembers it, and in Pearl Ridge as well) every week to pick up KKUA's weekly top hits pamphlet that had their tp songs listed inside and was printed on a different color paper every week. The wall of 45s was all I ever looked at, because that was a all I could afford at that young age.

Rj tells me he created 5 for the San Diego market, mid 70's, then came back to his home and produced 5 for the Hawaiian market.
Strangely and ironically enuff, 'homegrown' was the catchphrase thought up there in San Diego for the title of the original series.

I remember going to DJs Sound City (Exactly where Kimo remembers it, and in Pearl Ridge as well)
and here it is...
http://www.tikitv.com/djsouncity.html
...large inventory of fresh new 1977 Homegrown albums sitting in a dump display, being chosen by a hapa wahine in a boob tube and flaired jeans drawstring tieindaback pants at DJ's Sound City... wheah?! ala moana?
Looks like mauka side, like where Lida's is, cuz we see dabus going by and a building right behind it...
the dump display header sez:
KKUA 69 presents
Hawaii's own 1977
Homegrown Album
behind da wahine, spok em:
(wait; recognize em, before I tellya?)
Leo Sayer, thunder in my heart album
Kansas album; point of know return
http://www.tikitv.com/dakine!.jpg
then we have a ton of casette accessories, of course, (remember those?)
and then da wall o' 45's behind da clerk in the thick canvas Surfline subdued print aloha shirt complete with epaulets.
spotted;
The latest album from Olomana "and so we are"... color poster of that on the front of the blue counter.
3 yellowish DJ's sound city frisbees with a piece of paper showing the cost, on da counter.
plastic ashtray.
plastic display thing showing "Clear Sound" product
She rests her hands on a 10X12 speaker cabinet..
another Olomana 8.5x11 flyer on the way out, taped onto an Olivia Newton John standee next to the door.
clipboard with manila folder colored paper listing allll the 45 chart hits available on da wall.
same thing on white paper taped to the counter top. 3 panel cartoon taped to counter top.
It pays to wear a snug boob tube: She hands him da record, he rings it up, staples receipt to da bag, she walks out with it. No money exchanged. she got a freebie.
(had to create a small size version movie cuz da buggah woulda been much bigger than the 10+ mb's it is now...)

gathering details piece by piece.
thus far:
The first "Homegrown" album was released in 1973 in San Diego, when RJ (Ronald Jacobs to you) was a DJ there at KGB... The album featured local musicians performing their songs about the area. A San Diego resident created the cover art, a result of a citywide contest. The liner notes were written by a teenage KGB listener by the name of Cameron Crowe.

The KRTR Homegrown album did come out on a CD in 1998. Here is a link to a picture of the album cover:
http://kellyvillaverde.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/homegrown.jpg
Here is one of the artist's website who had a track on this album:
http://kellyvillaverde.tripod.com/
Look on the left hand side of his homepage. Click on recordings and a description of the album and the same picture shows up.
I seen this on sale at Jelly's a few times over the years. The album like the original Homegrown ones is probably out of print now.

After I made the post I found out the direct link to the album picture does not work with a normal click. Went back and made a tinyurl with it and this is what you have to do.
1. Do not click on the URL I post here.
2. Instead, copy the URL.
3. Open new blank browser window.
4. Paste URL into the place where URL goes.
You should see a large version of the album cover.

I know this is about a year late, but I've got a couple of the first Hawaii Homegrown albums. I'm getting ready to pen one to make a Cd copy of it because I had a song on it. "In The Old Hawaiian Way" We called ourselves Shakbait and recorded the track on a 4-track reel-to-reel deck in my apartment with one cheap Shure microphone plugged into it. I remember when I brought the tape down to Audio Media where KKUA was compiling the tracks for the album, I was horrified to find out that as I played the song I'd slowed down so listening to the end of the song then restarting it was kinda funny. It was a long song though. :P

I haven't heard "O Akua" since I was a kid. It would be awesome to upload all of those old homegrown albums onto mp3...
