As someone who lived with computers for basically all of his life, I can't stand it when people either double click on a link (then complains as to why its taking so long to load, and double clicks it again) or someone who pulls the power cord out from the back of the computer to turn it off either after their done with it or because it froze. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v81/adri1456/smilies/awcrap.gif

As someone who lived with computers for basically all of his life,

What are you, 15?

<smiley!> Yeah, I'm old.

I have a few peeves, but ... I'm afraid to tell about any of them because someone might be bothered by my (seemingly) negative attitude after a couple of my recent posts. Hee! So I'll wait on this one.

Well, OK, one peeve. I can't resist. It's my biggest peeve. It's ... people who refuse to use turn signals. When you're on two wheels (motorized), this stuff is REALLY important, not just polite, but life-saving. I need warning if someone going 65 in the next lane is about to swerve into me. Because they sure as heck aren't checking their blind spots, which brings me to Peeve No. 2. Then they get mad at ME when I blast around them.

OK, I'll go to bed now. But first ... virtual chocolate-chip cookies and milk for everyone!

It's even worse for people who ride nonmotorized bikes, like me. Some people feel like they have to play a game of chicken, see how close they can get next to you without actually clipping you and making you fall off. At least on a motorbike, you have a chance of stepping on the gas and avoiding some problems, but it really is open season on people on bicycles who only have their legs to keep them out of trouble. I've certainly become more careful when driving in the car and passing people on bicycles. People in parked cars (which a lot of times share the bicycle lane up here), never think to look in their rear view mirrors to see if a bicyclist might be coming up on them...they just open their door and BLAM...a couple of bikers were killed up here recently because they ran into car doors or were run over by people backing out of their driveways without making sure no one was coming.

You're right, of course -- it's much worse on a bicycle. Whenever I see a biciycle rider, I think, "I sure hope she/he makes it." It's really nerve-wracking. Some people just hate bicyclists; it's an absurd hostility. Now I'll worry about you, Miulang!

On a bike, I used to get blown off the road constantly by TheBus hurtling past an inch away. I was convinced the drivers were playing chicken with me.

Sometimes you have to unplug the computer to do a Hard Reset when the three finger salute doesn't work. You have to remember that just hitting the power button on your computer doesn't stop the power supply from sending current to the mobo. That's why when doing hardware upgrades is highly recommended that you unplug your computer.

I think it's prudent to unplug or turn off the power strip to a computer if you aren't using it simply because of the power draw even when it's off.

OK, I've got another peeve. I keep seeing it right here on HT.

It's "July 25, 2005" not "July 25th, 2005." Leave off the "th"!

Like when people say, "I'm going to the mainland on August sixth." No, you're not, you're going on August 6. Or you can say, "I'm going on the sixth," because that is shorthand for, "I'm going on the sixth of the month."

I don't mind so much when people *say* it, but it grates on me when I see it in print from sources that should know better, like newspapers and such. And message boards. (smiley!)

"or someone who pulls the power cord out from the back of the computer to turn it off either after their done with it or because it froze."

The (Dell) computers at Hamilton Library, UH-Manoa, are so screwed up, that's often the only way to get them to re-boot. The reset button does nothing.

Sometimes yanking out the power cord is the only way to stop that bad print job that garbled your document and has emptied out your paper tray, printing one... symbol... per... sheet. Of course, you also gotta run around and cancel the job in several caches and printer spools along the way.

People who have a bad experience in a restaurant and don't bother to tell a manager about it, waiting instead to complain about it to others with little influence.

If there's a problem, tell someone about it before you leave. Especially if you enjoy going to the joint and don't want to see it fail.

Constructive criticism works, especially in the restaurant biz.

then again, a public forum such as this may hold some influence and yield an effect... ya never know... Maybe the manager or employee or two reads and may chime in and discuss.
