I'm not sure if many locals in the 'aina know about Bumpy Kanahele's (http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=hawaiians30&date=20050730&query=alex+tizon) work in trying to create a true Hawaiian village, but now he's starting to get the attention of the national press.
He's set up his own little ahupua'a in the backwash of Waimanalo. Even though it might not be the politically correct way for the kanaka maoli to gain independence, at least he's trying to do something for his people...he's teaching them to be self-sufficient.

Yep, we surely do. He and the village have had lots and lots of press covereage over the past years. Thanks for the link to the article, though. I believe the New York Times ran something just last week too.

I think they reprinted the story from the Seattle Times. The writer is Alex Tizon (Pinoy boy) from Seattle. The same story is in the LA Times today, too.

Bumpy's a distant cousin of mine. Da buggah promised to help me install some slot machines and poker tables in my "casino" here in Puna. ;)

Ian Lind points out (http://www.ilind.net/2005/august/jul30-aug06.html) that the figure quoted in the article -- 240,000 people with 50% or more Native Hawaiian ancestry -- is probably wrong, as that is actually the number of people in the islands who have any Native Hawaiian ancestry.

Whenever I saw Bumpy in Ala Moana I yell out, "Eh Bumpy...hows the compound" and give him one shaka sign.
Bumpy the true Hawaiian rebel! He da man!!
