Hmmmm...just a note of interest.

Regarding the ferry as a viable means of inter-island travel?
IMO, I don't think so. It'll be too much of "roughing it" for us jet-spoiled locals. And I speak from experience when I say, "It's dang choppy out there!"

Our very own mel got a first-hand look, and posted his own set of photos here (http://macpro.freeshell.org/superferry/).

I wouldn't immediately discount their chances of survival. Four hours from Oahu to the Big Island with room to relax and move around (and for kids to play)? Compare that to the disaster that is airport security (conceivably four hours of your life, total, wasted anyway), cramped planes (no fun for kids... or fellow passengers near said kids), and interisland fares ($180 round trip), and you have an attractive alternative... for the right price. Hawaii SuperFerry projects their fares will be about half of what an airline ticket would cost. And bringing your car with you would cost just about as much more. Try that with a 737.

There are some excellent questions and answers (http://www.hawaiisuperferry.com/faqs/default.html) at the official site. I love that the Big Island port is Kawaihae, actually, as one of our primary destinations during our regular pilgrimage is Kapa`au (the northernmost tip).

We have to wait until 2006 to experience it for real. And I hope to!

Me neither, actually. I really hope that it's successful.
I guess it's "sink or swim." :p

Ouch. Bad one...
