This is the first (http://starbulletin.com/2005/08/18/features/story1.html) I've read or seen of these ugly things. Are they really catching on that much in Hawai'i? They've obviously been around for a while since Ebay's showing quite a bunch of listings (http://search.ebay.com/crocs_W0QQfromZR41).

Saw 'em at City Mill last week. Man, they're ugly! I don't care how comfortable they are, no one over the age of 10 should be wearing something that goofy looking.

Yes, they really are catching on. I've got dozens of friends and aquaintances who have been wearing them for a while now, and they kept trying to talk me into it. I don't like the looks of the Crocs, cuz to me they look like Birkenstocks and I'm not a big fan of those. (Did you notice in that S-B article that it refers to them as "clown shoes"?)
:p
But one day a friend demanded that I try his on... and I went to City Mill within minutes and bought two pairs.
:D

Now you've piqued my interest.;) So, how much were they selling for at City Mill, and were they located in the Gardening section? I'm wondering if our Home Depot might be selling those too. :p

They were $29.99 plus tax, on a big rack right behind the checkout stands, but they've now got two racks and are in the center aisle.
They've got a website, at the obvious URL: http://www.crocs.com .
And Lurkah... great choice of thread title!

According to the S-B story, City Council Chairman Donovan Delacruz says that "around City Hall he'll wear them with black socks to mask the telltale pukas that allow feet to breathe."

Donovan Delacruz is taking fashion tips from my (deceased) father! Aaack!

It's been a month since there were any replies on this thread, so I'm curious: has anyone else has tried a pair of Crocs yet?

I have, found them hotter and rougher on the feet than my $20 pair of sandles. And solid plastic shoes are just kind of creepy like tech-no-clogs or somethin

Ok, I clicked the link on. It took time. The first picture was of Mel Cabang...I laughed cause the man is funny! I scrolled down -- YIKES! Won't buy one. Nope, his legs scared me off. Doesn't matter if the rest of the promotional ad's were great. Nope, that going give me nightmares. Now what is CROC'S? :p

Yeah, I think they'd just be too radical of a change for me too. Not only would I feel self-conscious wearing them, but I'd also feel foolish spending $30 bucks for a pair. Rubbah slippahs still rule! ;)

They're ugly as heck, but I tried on a pair last weekend and I can see why people like 'em. They're comfy.

Ugly but comfortable. Ehh. Reminds me of Birkenstocks.

My dad has a pair. Of course they're obnoxiously bright yellow, rather than black. They feel kinda funky. Heavier than I'd like. I don't think I'll be getting a pair... especially at the prices I've seen. Think of all the perfectly reasonable pairs of normal shoes that money would get you at Payless!

I won't be procuring a pair because everyone else has them.

I saw these at my favorite store, Down To Earth, months ago and wanted them. I still want them.

Are you sure your dad wasn't still in them?
:p
Nah, I understand what you folks are saying about the looks, and that's exactly what I said for a long time... until I wore a pair for a couple of hours.

So Lika, how often and for what occasions do you wear your Crocs? For just around the house, or for doing yardwork? For a trip to the grocery store, or maybe to Windward Mall?

Also, are they just left on the front porch, or do they rate higher inside or backdoor security due to their relatively high cost?

So Lika, how often and for what occasions do you wear your Crocs? Probably a 50-50 split with my slippahs, including for work.

Also, are they just left on the front porch, or do they rate higher inside or backdoor security due to their relatively high cost? Outside on the lanai by the front door.
No Birkenstock addicts in my neighborhood.

They were $29.99 plus tax Well, I wrote that a month ago but was in CityMill yesterday and happened to notice the price had gone up to $39.99! Apparently a hot-selling item!
And this discussion reminded me that I hadn't worn mine for a while so I wore them to work today. They're still ugly, but they're also still darned comfortable!

Egads. If it's not the looks, then it must be the comfort. Or maybe this HawaiiThreads thread is escalating the demand. :p

Never say never. Guess I'll have to try them ASAP to find out.

So there I was in City Mill last Sunday, and as I walked past the Crocs display I noticed that Crocs now makes and sells... SLIPPAHS! Bought a pair on the spot and have worn them ever since. Love 'em!
And in reality they look pretty normal. Not quite as zoomy looking as the photo at http://www.crocs.com/consumer/product_details/~athens~/ .
They're extremely light, outstandingly comfortable, and when you get them wet you don't hear that squish squish.

Hey! Now that's more my style! :D Thanks for the heads-up! I'll be looking out for them at my local hardware stores. Were they cheaper than the originals?

I don't know what "slides" are, and I couldn't find them on the Crocs website.
However, for those of you who find you have to kneel down a lot (gardeners and Catholics, I guess) ( :p ), check out http://www.crocs.com/consumer/product_details/kneeler/ .

Thanks for the heads-up! I'll be looking out for them at my local hardware stores. Were they cheaper than the originals? You're welcome too. The Crocs slippahs were $29.99. Not a bad price. I looked all over for some new slippahs about a month ago, trying to find some with good arch support, and I saw prices from $20 to $50. I bought some, but these Croc slippahs are much better.
Hey, maybe next Christmas, for all the children at Mayor Wright's Housing... hmmmm...

I was looking at the Nile: http://www.crocs.com/consumer/product_details/nile/

I think shoes like that are called "slides" because you just slide your foot in and out. Looks like the category is pretty broad - these are all considered slides:

http://www.solestruck.com/slides.html

Hmm...I have a sudden strong desire to go shoe shopping! :D

Put me on the "Thumbs Up for Crocs" List. I bought some bubblegum pink ones a few months ago. THey were $25.99 I wear then to work! Don't panic  , I work in a hospital and since most of my scrubs have some form of pink flowers in them, they always match. They are incredible light, and very shock absorbing. They are also easy to clean which is a good thing since I work in labor and delivery (Sorry for any bad visuals that might evoke!)

I have been known to wear them when I have to go pick up the kids from events, but only if I am sure I won't have to get out of the car. :)

Put me on the "Thumbs Up for Crocs" List. Remember to look for the Crocs slippahs, too! And yes, I'm wearing my 'regular' Crocs at work today. Still not in love with the way they look, but the comfort... ahhhhhhh...

I've been in Castle Hospital a few times lately (Mom's a bit sick) and noticed that alot of the Nurses and Aides are wearing them. They're color coordinating the crocs with their scrubs! Crocs MUST be comfortable since those folks are on their feet for long shifts. Guess I'll have to try 'em out. Sheesh, last week I finally gave in and bought a pair of Vans. I like them and promised my wife I wouldn't ruin them hiking. :o

Excerpts from yesterday's Advertiser story called Ugly shoes pretty for investors (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2006/Apr/23/bz/FP604230343.html):

"The company, which made its first shoe in late 2002, saw sales swell to $108.6 million last year from $13.5 million in 2004. Crocs, which retail for $30 to $60, now sell in 6,500 U.S. stores and in 40 countries.
"At the beginning of 2005, Crocs could make just 100,000 pairs a month — and was selling all of them. By the end of that year, it had the capacity to make 2 million pair a month, he said.
"When the company went public in February, its share price quickly shot up 55 percent. The company sold 9.9 million shares during the IPO, raising $240 million, Snyder said. The company took in about $109 million while the remainder went to shareholders who were selling, he said."

:pFinally. It's taken just over a year since this thread first started and the model of Crocs that I've been waiting for have finally made their way to Mayberry. Picked up a pair of black ones just like these (http://www.shoemall.com/assets/product_images/613890L.jpg) a little while ago and yes, they are very light and very comfy and IMHO worth the $29.99 for their added rugged durability, which I could tell by the way my bumbucha luau feet punished them during trial runs in the store. :o I'm also glad that I waited for this Athens "rubbah slippahs" model to get here instead of buying the ones that looked like clown shoes (http://starbulletin.com/2005/08/18/features/art1b.jpg) in the beginning. ;)
