There's a sport that has caught on here called Geocaching. Check out www.geocaching.com . It takes a GPS unit to find coordinates to where someone has hidden a treasure box. Many times it is an old army ammo box or a plastic container with toys or other swag in it. There are over 300 just on Oahu already. There's also a section of HawaiiThreads dedicated to the "local" cachers. Check out GPSHawai'i (www.lightfantastic.org/gps/). Have fun!

Now for a shameless plug of my hides...

1) Secret Menehune Fishing Spot - GCMFAC

2) Menehune Water Source - GCMNPJ

3) Ala Wai Peninsula - GCMMWZ

The GC lettering are called waypoints and you can find out the coordinates using them or the names on the Geocaching site. Happy Hunting!

I've been Geocaching here in Texas for a while and when i was on the Big Island in July did a bit there.

It's alot of fun for those of you who have not tried it, it's like an easter egg hunt for big kids :-P

Went for a hike with a friend up Mariner's Ridge in Hawaii Kai. There are 2 Geocaches along that trail called "Ancient Mariner" and "Sub-Mariner Rock Box". When we reached the summit, the view was above Waimanalo and all the way to Mokoli'i(Chinaman's Hat) Island.

Just had a terrific day of hiking and geocaching with a couple of friends. I bagged 7 finds today. We went up and over Koko Crater and the views into Hanauma Bay and towards Diamond Head were awesome. Then went to Makapuu Lighthouse area for alot more walking and talking while finding hidden treasure boxes. Check it out. Gets you to go to places you may not or haven't been for awhile. Aloha!

Went for a choice Geo-hike out Waianae/Kaena Point. Parked just past Keawe Ula (Yokohama's) Beach and walked out to the point. There's a really cool cave and some natural arches along the way. Then we rounded the corner and went a couple of miles on the Mokuleia side and found "Manini Gulch"- a beautiful little valley with straight up rock cliffsides about 150' and in some places less than 50' wide across the bottom. We saw a Pueo by the valley and some Albatross' by the point. Then of course we had to get back to the car so it was quite a few miles. Well worth the effort. Come soon it will be whale watching season too. As Arnold would say... I'll be back.

Nice to see other geocachers here! :D

We have a few on Kauai.

Welcome to Jurassic Park (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=d65d5cb6-6129-4909-88eb-9bced5578c35) gets the most raves and emails from people for the adventure.

The Way to Waialeale (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=c38b38d9-9b6c-437b-8587-816ee9cf6606) is a little more difficult and not as frequented but people seem to like it.

Tiny Bubbles (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=bac2597c-b6e5-400d-8a7c-7b98408541cd) is one people really like too not just for the location but the theme of the cache too.

Hope to see some cachers out and about!

I hope this LINK (165.248.141.16/~srohr/Geocache/TripleDogDare/01.htm) works. It was an incredible adventure up to the Koolau summit from the back of Kuliouou Valley. Check it out folks. This is Hawaii at it's finest!
Note: There are many pages of photos. Keep clicking next.

Wow Menehune Man. Very rugged, breathtaking and beautiful photos! If I were in my 20s again, I'd probably consider something like this. Today I just run out of breath walking over a speed bump.

I was thinking of geocaching as one of those flat-aiea-loop-trail type hikes, but man, I lost my breath while I was viewing those photos.

The link works just fine for showing the steep slopes and ridges at the back of that beautiful and lush valley where I grew up. I always loved to watch those tall Norfolk pines blowing back and forth in the wind way up at the top of the valley and still find myself doing so whenever I head back home.

Any thoughts of hiking back there by myself were discouraged by the many, many times I've seen the Honolulu Fire Department send their ground and air rescue squads back there to find hikers who, for whatever reasons, couldn't make it out on their own by nightfall.

Mahalo, Menehune Man, for allowing me to finally take that hike, albeit vicariously, with you. :D

The neatest thing about Geocaching is the hides. They range from anything like a small magnetic key holder hidden behind a sign Dowtown, short walks from your parked car at a scenic lookout to where the treasure box is, or mellow but wonderful hikes and just off the trail is an old ammo box full of toys and then of course there are the insane treks up the sides of mountains to find an old peanut butter jar (painted green) with a log book and pen. Too much fun I tell you and it gets me off the couch. :D

This weeks MidWeek has an article on Geocaching. It was written fairly well and Islandfever covered the various aspects to the game. Of course I'm Menehune Man. Check out both pages of the story. Here's the article (www.midweek.com/content/story/midweek_extrastory/geocaching_geo_what/)

If you make it to Los Angeles, I have several hidden here. I also have the only physical cache hidden on the strip in Las Vegas. I love hearing from people all over the world who find my caches.

When I went to Hawaii, I made sure to find one so I can eventually find one in each state.

Look me up in geocaching. Dru Morgan (http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=ddc7573e-2e4b-4b48-b9ca-2d86bf49041a)

I just found This Post (www.hawaiithreads.com/showpost.php?p=83970&postcount=1) by Manoa! Yeah, that's where I've been hiding out. At GPSHawai'i (www.hawaiithreads.com/forumdisplay.php?f=42)

It was fun being interviewed for the MidWeek article, seeing my picture and the other shots were taken from a few of my Geocache hides. It's really a fun hobby.

I've been missing your regular posts on HT....Yeah, I'm back. Missed all the laughs too!

Where you work... you guys gonna participate in any part of the pbs antique show?I really don't know?

Manoa...

P.S. so what's the cheapest most functional thing I can get to get started w/ this Geocaching thing?I bought my Garmin Etrex Legend for $170 at Office Depot almost 2 years ago. sounds kinda cool...It's a Great time and a Great bunch of "Local" cachers! although I think I need to buy different shoes to join excurssions. A good idea. I use football cleats for the tough ones and just old sneakers for the rest.

I hope you do try it out. I've truly been to places on this island that I've never been before because of Geocaching. ;)

I've got a Geocache hide named "Menehune Island" on the little man-made island near the Kahala Hilton / Mandarin Oriental or whatever it's called now. I took my God kids today to see the Dolphins and Sea Turtles there along with a swim out to the cache site. We had a Blast! Check out the Cache Page (www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=eeb75caa-7ed8-4e0f-9747-f8ad1397e72c) to see some photos. Cute yeah?!

There's a travelling exhibit about GPS use, called "GPS Maze".
I've contacted many higher ups at the Bishop Museum to see if we can bring it to Honolulu!

"The GPS Adventures Maze is a hands-on traveling exhibit that features GPS technology-its history, current uses and future possibilities; and simulates geocaching by leading visitors through a 2,500 square foot maze rich with interactive experiences."

You can learn more about the maze here: http://www.gpsmaze.com/

Right now the exhibit is in Indiana, but it will be traveling. In fact you can request that it come to your area here: http://www.gpsmaze.com/location_request.html. You need to enter a zip code and if I enter our home or work zip code, the suggested venue is the Bishop Museum.

There will be a total lunar eclipse on Monday night August 27th. Hawaii is a perfect spot for it this year, with the moon high overhead and during dark skies. I'm also the head of a Geocaching Event that night at the Bishop Museum.

I just want to show you a wonderful experience that over 150 people shared!

On Saturday 4/19/08 we(Geocachers, UH Travel Industry Students and Nuuanu YMCA Staff) gathered at the Allen Davis side of Sandy Beach. Lots of planning went into this of which I was a small part. I go by Menehune Man in that circle too and was wearing the Land Rover Flag! The City&County brought out an excavator and large dump truck along with the DLNR having a truck and driver there all day.

Some folks painted out the graffitti. Big job!
Some folks combed the mangroves for trash. Big job!
While my group scoured far and wide from Kaloko inlet back to Sandys. Big job!

Here's a link to the Event page.
