I saw this on Tuesday and wasn't sure whether I'd read it correctly:

Nude camper tries to deter car thief

A nude female camper jumped on the hood of a rental car to try to stop a suspect from stealing it yesterday morning in Mokuleia. Police said a man was trying to steal a silver four-door Chevrolet sedan from Mokuleia beach at about 8 a.m. yesterday. Police said the woman, a visitor from the mainland, was inside a tent when she heard the car starting up while her boyfriend was swimming. The woman, in her 20s, ran out and confronted the man, police said. The man allegedly drove off with the woman on the hood of the car. Police later found the car in a Waialua cornfield, but the suspect was not found. Police have classified the case as a robbery.

(Star-Bulletin, 8/23/05 (http://starbulletin.com/2005/08/23/news/briefs.html))Then it showed up again today:

Man who allegedly stole car is arrested

Police arrested a 28-year-old man yesterday for allegedly stealing a car while a naked woman jumped on the hood to try and stop him. Police said the suspect stole the car from a Mokuleia campsite Monday and was driving away when the woman, 21, who was camping nearby, jumped on the hood. Police said the suspect swerved violently to throw the woman off the car, rammed a vehicle that was following him and then abandoned the car and took off. Officers found the suspect yesterday near Kahalewai Place and Kamehameha Highway near Haleiwa Beach Park and arrested him for investigation of first-degree robbery.

(Star-Bulletin, 8/25/05 (http://starbulletin.com/breaking/breaking.php?id=3725))Oh boy. Just picturing this makes me laugh. :D

From what I understand, it inspired poetry in the newsrooms (think bawdy beer-drinking songs).

I have a question. Couple were staying on the beach camping. Women walking around finding her things missing and suspect starting car. She jumps on to stop him.

My question, what the hell she walking around naked night time in that area? Is it a nudist camp? I'm a local Auntie. I wouldn't go around walking in the nude in any beach...then again, nah. Neva mind.

I believe she was sleeping in her tent, nude. I believe she was homeless, or a permanent camper who heard her own possession start up and possibly be stolen. Gotta say I feel for her.

That's not what was reported on the news tonight on Channel 4. They said the lady was coming back from a walk and saw her things missing when she saw the suspect starting their rented car. The tourists are from Washington. She suffered bruises and cuts.

This is my source for my statements that led me to believe she was in a tent, and GUILTY ME, I assumed from this story that she was a permanent camper, as no indication was made in this report that she was a tourist, or it was a rental vehicle: Here is the item as it ran in The Honolulu Advertiser, Tuesday, August 23, 2005:

Cops search for suspect in thwarted car theft

Police are continuing to look for a 28-year-old man suspected of stealing a car yesterday morning from a naked woman at Mokule'ia Beach.

The woman told police she was in her tent about 8 a.m. when she heard the car's engine start.

The woman ran out of the tent in the nude and jumped on the hood of the car to try to keep it from being stolen, police said.

Police said the car swerved back and forth and made a series of sharp U-turns in hopes of dislodging the woman, who was finally dislodged from the car near Camp Erdman on Farrington Highway.

A witness who saw what was happening followed the stolen car and driver in his own car until the suspect used the stolen car to ram the witness' car before fleeing, police said.
As mentioned in this thread by Glen, the Star-Bulletin also said she was in her tent when the theft was made.

So mea culpa, 1stwahine.

No problem! Who's surprised when all our news outlets in Hawaii each give us a different story? Not me! But it certainly colors how we perceive and understand current events. If we all had time to read everything about everything, then we'd know it all and be experts. But when even the media outlets have tunnel vision, editing out this and that, what can the rest of us do but SHRUG?

Sounds like both print and broadcast were right...

Woman is walking back to tent, notices something is fishy. She goes inside, notices stuff is missing, then hears the car start.

Woman runs out of tent, jumps on hood of car.

My question is still the same. WHY WAS SHE NAKED?

And was the boyfriend naked too? A little morning nookie out in the ocean, maybe?

This is the sort of thing I do. Wonder about this or that. Then I devise these hilarious theories in my head about why she was naked. Was she impressed with the complete peace and freedom that she shed her clothes for an early morning walk by the sea? I mean, it's quite beautiful up there! Was there some morning delight triggered by pulsing waves? Then my husband tells me I should just write some best-selling soft porn so I can buy us another car, LOL!

I can't help but have the image of the thief trying to get away, and then suddenly have two large breasts smeared up against the windshield!!

Maybe the woman secretly believed she was SUPERWOMAN and ultimately used her powers as only a naked woman could.

She came back from the walk, saw the car being stolen, ran into a random tent (no phone booths in the area), stripped down to what she believed was her Superwoman suit.. (a birthday suit!).

Then of course she ran back out and flung her self on the car, and the rest is Hawaii/Superwoman History!

But let's face it...if she were fully clothed, this story would have been ho hum...

So we can come up with a ton of suppositions but let's look at the more obvious one...the couple were having sex and the guy went into the ocean to wash up while she ended up having to save the day.

One good thing about being naked is that skin tends to adhere better to car hoods than cotton or synthetic fabrics so being naked may have saved her life.

Who Knows!

It could've been slicker on that hood than a surf board on Bligh Reef...

Yes, but... it was at the beach. Sand everywhere.

This is true.

The imagery just keeps getting better and better...

A pity the woman apparently didn't want to play a part in the story (beyond what ended up in the papers already). That would've been an interview I would've loved to land.

It's true! At least, in my experience. Of the 12 times I've had to chase down car thieves, I was naked nine of those times. In all nine times, I was successful in stopping the theft. In eight, I was covered in sand and therefore adhered to the car hood. The ninth, I had rolled in dirt just before the theft, so I was still able to stick to the car's surface. The other three (unsuccessful) times, I was wearing clothes, and I slid right off the hood into oncoming traffic.

So I always make sure I have an extra set of lack of clothes with me in case I need to jump on a moving car.

Oh the truth bears it all...yeah and if anyone ever brags that sex on the beach is the bomb...well they've never had sex on the beach because the sand can get pretty painful on all them sensitive spots when doing the bump and grind.

Just bring a beach towel... you know, one of those that are the size of Lanikai, and won't bunch up completely when you're doing the horizontal mambo... An old bedsheet works in a pinch, too.
