In betting circles (not that I'd know), the over/under is a number set by the bookmakers on a certain game; bettors wager on whether the total score of the game will be over or under the number.

I thought it would be fun to set a few over/under numbers in other areas of interest and see what others' predictions are. So just for fun, will you take the OVER or UNDER (for the period beginning today and ending next Monday night) on:

3: The number of times Governor Lingle's name (or title) will appear in a headline on the front page of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. This includes sub-headlines.

17: The number of points the UH Manoa football team will score against Michigan State.

10: The number of people who will respond with predictions as responses to this post.

$42.90: The value of Longs Drugs stock. (The symbol is LDG if you want to track it)

1: The number of deaths in car accidents on Oahu.

72: In degrees, the lowest low temperature in Honolulu, according to Weather Underground (http://www.wunderground.com/US/HI/Honolulu.html).

11: Number of games, not matches, the UH Manoa women's volleyball team will play (scheduled to play Cincinnati, UCLA, and CalState Northridge).

147: Number of replies in the What's For Lunch? (http://hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=5762) thread.

Let's see those predictions!

Interesting... Though many of these would be wild guesses, as I'm not an investor, nor much of a sports fan. So, between Sept. 6 and Sept. 12...

Lingle hed/subhed mentions on the Star-Bulletin's A-1: 9. I almost went higher. I think three is pretty low.
UH score vs. Michigan State (http://uhathletics.hawaii.edu/pr.html?prid=13661&p=3) on Sept. 10: 19. We got 41 last time, but I don't think anyone thinks that game was typical!
Sets of predictions (not just replies) added to "Over/Under": 11. I'll just go one over your guess, Scrivener, 'cause I can.
The value of Longs Drugs stock (http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=LDG): $43.50. Looks like they've ranged from $41 to $46 in the last three months...
Auto fatalities: 3. That's high, statistically, I know, but... these things come in waves.
Lowest low temperature recorded: 71. Things are getting cooler.
UH Manoa women's volleyball games: 10. We do tend to see longer matches with a couple of those teams.
Total posts in What's For Lunch - Chapter 5 (http://hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=5762): 155. Provided the isn't "rolled" in the mean time!

Just for clarity's sake, you don't have to guess a value ('though that's fine); you just have to predict OVER or UNDER the given number.

So we'd use your numbers as the benchmark and just say which way we'd go instead? I guess that's easier. In my case, then, you can just figure out if I picked "over" or "under" based on my specific guesses. I went "over" except in the last three.

You really think Lingle will be in a hed/subhed only three times in the next week? :)

Is equal a valid choice for the prediction? Or what happens if it is equal who gets it Over or Under?

The big front-page stories have been Akaka and Katrina; I expect the headlines to continue to be dominated by those stories;

plus, the goal of the line-setter is not to predict the number exactly; it's to draw equal numbers above and below the line.

"Equal" is a copout! The way the betting works, you have to bet over or under; if the result is equal, everyone loses. Except the house.

Reminds me of those Japanese gambling games in the old samurai flicks. The dealer would shake the cup, slam it down on the floor, and everybody'd bet on whether the dice added up to han (odd) or cho (even) before the dealer lifted the cup to reveal them.

Lingle: Over

UH Football: Under. MSU is looking for pay back. Some MSU fans (visiting from MI) who I sat with on the TheBus UH Football Express ride home to the Windward Side after the game last year said UH will pay dearly in '05's trip to East Lansing. The last thing they said to me was something like "E O Na Toa E this...MSU 63 UH 9 in '05". (Evidently they didn't take the "E O" chanting, or the UH victory, very well!)

Prediction participants: Over

Long's Stock Price: Over

Traffic Deaths: Under

Temperature: Over

Volleyball: Under. The UH Wahine will show the nation how volleyball is meant to be played.

Lunch Thread: Under.

Let's see how it worked out:

3: The number of times Governor Lingle's name (or title) will appear in a headline on the front page of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. This includes sub-headlines.
I didn't see a Star-Bulletin on Wednesday, but I saw it Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and unless I missed one, there were NO Lingle references in headlines or subheadlines. If there were three or fewer on Wednesday, which seems most likely, the winning guess is UNDER. Pzarquon, Moto, Helen, Miulang, and Surfingfarmboy all bet OVER. House cleans up on this one.

17: The number of points the UH Manoa football team will score against Michigan State.
It was 14 -- UNDER. Surfingfarmboy, Miulang, and Helen win this one.

10: The number of people who will respond with predictions as responses to this post.
The house sweeps this one too, as the correct answer is five -- UNDER.

$42.90: The value of Longs Drugs stock. (The symbol is LDG if you want to track it)
$43.77 -- OVER. Pzarquon, helen, Miulang, and Surfingfarmboy win this one. Sorry, Moto.

1: The number of deaths in car accidents on Oahu.
I'm not sure of this one, so please correct me if I've got it wrong, but I think that on Oahu, there were no fatalities -- UNDER. Surfingfarmboy is a winner.

72: In degrees, the lowest low temperature in Honolulu, according to Weather Underground (http://www.wunderground.com/US/HI/Honolulu.html).
Click here (http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/PHNL/2005/9/12/MonthlyHistory.html#calendar) to see the week's highs and lows, and you'll learn that the low for the stated time period was 74 -- OVER. Winners are Surfingfarmboy, Moto, Miulang, and Helen.

11: Number of games, not matches, the UH Manoa women's volleyball team will play (scheduled to play Cincinnati, UCLA, and CalState Northridge).
It took three games to beat Cincy and Northridge, and four to beat UCLA, for a total of ten games -- UNDER. Surfingfarmboy and Helen get winners. Pzarquon earned a push, but the push goes to the house, so it's a loser.

147: Number of replies in the What's For Lunch? (http://hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=5762) thread.
Helen tried, but the count as of right now is 143 -- UNDER. Surfingfarmboy and Moto picked winners.

Summary:
There were 40 predictions made, with a total of 16 winners, so the house would have cleaned up if this hadn't been for entertainment only! Surfingfarmboy was the big winner with 6 correct, followed by Helen (4), Miulang (3), Moto (2), and Pzarquon (1). Please let me know if any of my answers are wrong.

This was fun for me, so we'll do it again sometime -- just not now. However, if someone else would like to put up some numbers, I'd be happy to submit guesses!
