I'm in the process of having a complete make make over the "hard way!" No surgeries, no botox, etc. Exercising, walking, and running. Ladies, I need some major advice. When the transformation is done, what is the best yet affordable make-up that is available for one of my age that won't make me look like a clown but a refined woman. I don't want a make-up that is over bearing but one that enhances. I have been so used to without the finer things in life so long that I don't know where to start pampering myself again. I appreciate any advice you can give.

First thing is go to the day spa (SPA AT HONOLULU CLUB 808-543-3945
HONOLULU, HI 96814 ) in Honolulu (ask your kids to chip in and get that for you as an early Christmas or birthday present). You will be totally pampered from head to toe and will feel like a million bucks. After that, go to one of the best hair salons in town (anybody have suggestions?) Let them do your hair and they usually have someone who does makeup (the spa might also have a makeup artist). Whatever you do, don't go to the Macy's beauty counter and have them put makeup on you! It's not sanitary for one thing, and for another, they usually are only trying to sell you stuff.
I think the best off-the-shelf makeup is from Shiseido or Clinique, but other wahines might have other favorites. I rarely use makeup because it plugs up the pores.
Hope that helps.

The only things I really "splurge" on are foundation and concealer (I prefer Clinique), because I find that it's difficult to find properly matching shades for my skin tone otherwise. I also like Clinique's built in SPF and the slight golden shimmer (plenty available without the shimmer too!) that makes me look sun-kissed, even though I spend a lot of my time during the day in windowless ORs! It's very subtle, just enough to make my face look less pasty yellow.
As far as learning what works best for you makeup-wise:
Call Sephora in Ala Moana Mall (944.-9797) and schedule an appointment for one of their complimentary makeovers. They carry most major makeup lines and can help tailor makeup to suit your tastes and according to your preferences/needs.

Thanks Shelpa! Not yet, I still have about two months of work to do. Then I'll splurge on my new look! I want to experiment with the make-ups next month. At least I am getting a bit of information now. I can always count on hawaii threads.com!

I started using Merle Norman make up when I was still in high school and it really is good stuff. You can get a FREE make over done at any Merle Norman Studio. You do NOT have to buy a thing to get it....and if you do choose to buy any of it, I highly recommend the foundation. I like the water based one that comes in a tube. It does NOT sweat off for me and I do some serious sweating at times. They also have a foundation that comes in a little jar, which I used for many years, and I like it too. I like the loose face powder too. I do like their creme rouge, and have used their powder rouge, or blush or what ever they call it. *LOL* I know you know what is rouge, heh heh heh. I use different kinds of mascara, have never tried Merle Norman eye make up at all, so I cannot say any thing about it. I do not care for the cold cream......I just do not like cold cream at all of any kind. I cannot remember using any Merle Norman lipstick, but it was the only kind my Mother ever used and she loved it. I wash all my make up off with soap and water....of course they will try and sell you cold cream, toner, moisturizer, etc.
To sum it up I like Merle Norman foundation, loose face powder and blush.
Hope this helps.
PS they also will give you tons of samples to take home and use before you actually buy.

For foundation, test it on your neck near your collar bone. Your face gets the sun so you'll always get foundation that's too dark and hard to blend into your jawline if you test there, testing on your inner arm will get you a foundation that's too light. The neck gets a little sun but is still somewhat shaded by your jaw so it'll give you a good in-between and an earthy blusher will bring up the color for your face without getting too strong. You won't have to fight the jawline mask look then either.

Auntie Lynn:
If price is a concern I highly recommend you simply buy your cosmetics from Longs or Walmart. You'll find, in many cases, the same high-quality makeup you find at Macy's or Nordstroms. Also, if you keep your receipt, you can take back the product for a full refund or exchange if you find the makeup isn't right for you after trying it on at home.
Check out this article on the economics of makeup:

LOL! Hey! What did I tell you about telling things on me? I started to smoke last night plenty due to a broken heart...still, no excuse. You wouldn't understand yet, Adrian. Someday, you will...I hope not as bad. Hey, thanks again for the visit today.
About the soda's, I don't drink that too. I usually drink iced tea. I bought that for Mark who didn't show up. No sense going to waste. I drank that on Sat., I had a hang over. Uh never mind, you wouldn't understand that too.
I'd love the company Adrian. If you can be here in the morning. I usually leave around 7:30-8:00 am. I'll be taking a new route now. I'm taking the car to Ala Moana or Waikiki and see what happens. Let me know by email. Sure could use the company and your beautiful smile and outlook!

Sometimes you need to hear it in the public to do it. But to relieve your sorrows, just go running (like Forrest Gump). I hate to see you die early because of smoking. (and yes, I'll zip my mouth from now on)
And probably I can do it on Fridays or Saturdays. I'll see if I get up early on those days and make the trip downtown first.

Hi Ladies! I didn't want to start a new thread since this one relates to "MAKEOVER". BOTOX...I went to see my neurologist at Kaiser two weeks ago. Amongst other problems I suffer from very bad cluster headaches that requires me to use oxygen therapy at home. I had to laugh when my doctor, God bless her, offered me the use of BOTOX. Apperently, it has been found to be effective in preventing migraine attacks completely or severe ones in patients. It also has the benefits of which it is so widely known for. ;)
I opted for my oxygen re-order. I have oily skin. I don't have a wrinkle on my body yet...not even birth marks and I have three kids! :D :p

Using botox to treat migraines is still not an FDA-approved procedure for treating headaches, but some people have found relief when injected with low doses. Read this article (http://www.achenet.org/articles/24.php) and decide for yourself. Apparently if the botox works on your headaches, it could give you up to 3 months' relief. You might also ask your doctors if your cluster headaches are related to the hormonal changes you're going through, too. It's quite possible that once your system settles down again, the headaches might go way on their own.

I wish it was that simple Tita Miulang. I've been suffering from Cluster Headaches for years. I can have um' for three months straight. Don't have um for two - four years. Sometimes up to seven years. Out of the blue, BAM! It comes with a vengence. Emergency visits everyday at all hours. Screaming at all hours. Wanting to kill mysellf and busting my head wide open. Somehow oxygen therapy works and everytime I feel the slightest hint of one starting to attack, I go on oxygen. I usually catch um and I have been free of an Emergency Related Mirgaine Visit two years coming January.
I find it odd, that if it's not FDA approved why is Kaiser using it as a way of treating it's patient's. My doctor is a specialist. I also understood from her, as with any medication and treatment, there will be follow-ups and additional dosage as needed.
As far as my system settling down on my own...when? Please, Tita Miulang, when? Oh, I just came back from Longs and spoke with the cosmetic lady. They told me go to the expensive places and look what I like, don't purchase nothing. Come back to them...they get the same thing, cheaper. She'll also, let me know when the sales going be. Can mix and match too. Make-up is Make-up! It's how you apply it. Another thing, I bought,LOREAL Paris 5MM Superior Preference (Medium Mahogany Brown).

I wholeheartedly agree with what the Longs cometic lady told you. Other than my foundation/concealer, all my other makeup (eyeshadows, eyeliner, mascara, lip liner, lipstick) is from places like Longs/Walmart/Kmart. Nobody can tell...it's just a matter of finding out by trial and error which brands work best for you. I recommend Sephora for the makeover just so you can make notes on how best to apply the makeup and to find out what types and shades are best for your skin tone--then you can head straight over to Longs for the less expensive equivalents!

Aunty in this week's Midweek had one story about this place called J Salon at 1128 Nuuanu Ave. Maybe when you take your walk you can check it out. It said that the owner's name is Joe Randazzo...maybe his father is Teddy Randazzo, remember him? Go in and ask him for suggestions.

Wow, that name sounded so familiar that you made me go look (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2003/Nov/24/ln/ln28a.html).
Randazzo also was a major player on the Island recording scene, producing and arranging Keola and Kapono Beamer's best-selling song and album, "Honolulu City Lights," and composing such signature tunes as "I Love You" for Marlene Sai and "Salty Tears" for John Rowles.

Start off small. Walk around the complex, then probably around the block, or maybe through Chinatown.
If my schedule lets me, then I'll try and go to Ala Moana and walk around for a few hours, then probably join you in a few days.
And yes, eating healthy is a good way to start, but don't be like my Mom and go to Sams' Club and buy 10lbs of salad or the big box of the health cereal.
Oh yeah, don't forget to stretch, or else you'll be sore, and drink a lot of water while doing the walks.

Auntie Lynn . . . . (preface - well fed liquor well)
I myself as a man prefer an "undressed" woman. Not in the sense of clothing. Every woman has a natural beauty - that beauty is all too often buried under eye liner and mascara and other crap that you ladies paint on your face. I say fly au naturale (that's my stab at French) - show the world that you have a beautiful face - without the artificial dressings. I wish that women were as confident in their appearance as men (we get a wrinkle or a pimple or whatever (whateva? - I can't pull that one off yet!) and we fly with it - women are/should be allowed too.
Phew. Pardon my ramblings. Just let us see your true beauty (you are not going to see it - it's a natural flaw for women to overlook their own beauty.)
But I guess if you would feel more comfortable with a little assistance, go for it, but I bet I would rather hang out with you without make-up than you with make-up. But we have to wait 18 days for that - I"m coming to Mayor Wrights (is that right?) and we're going to dinner baby - I'll leave the wife at home!

What a load of bulls**t. Guys who say they like women without makeup are either lying or they're idiots. That "natural looking" woman with no makeup you're admiring? Yeah, guess what? She's wearing makeup! You can't tell because she doesn't have it slathered on with a trowel, but trust me, honey, it's there. Sucker.
I've heard so many guys say that same line, and then when I one day showed up wearing makeup after not wearing it for awhile, these same guys are all falling over themselves telling me how good I look (well, comparatively).
"Natural beauty," my ass. Idiot.

Heehee! The only problem with even a "little makeup" to dress the package up is that it's all gotta come off at night when you hit the sack. So what do you do when you fall in bed and the guy on the bed next to you says, "Hmmm...this ain't the package I bought"?

The real secret is to gently exfoilate every time you wash your face or take off the makeup and to use either a light moisturizer or witchhazle as a claifier or both depending on your skin type (oily, dry or a combo). Get one of those stretchy scrubby glove things to use gently, it'll take off the dead skin cells and stimulate your skin to make new fresh ones. Avoid claifying products with alot of alcohol in em 'cause they'll dry your skin out too much or burn you, and if you have oily skin shrunk pores get blocked really easy and cause blemishes. Witchhazle will cut the oils but not damage the skin like alcohol will...plus it's alot cheaper than some of the name brand products.

That's why I keep a pair of knitting needles next to the bed. To stab the guy's eyes out the next morning.

Is there any special brand of "witchhazel"? I think I'll like this product matches with bitch! LOL
Auntie Lynn
No not really it's pretty much a generic type product like 'rubbing alcohol' or 'peroxide', it's found alot where those are located in the drugstore. It's sometimes called Hamamalis water too.
Here's a site with some info on what it does:

Erm...I wouldn't advise using anything internally unless you know what you're doing.

I use Thayers witch hazel skin toner, contains NO alcohol. It comes in different varieties. The one I am using now is Rose Petal with aloe vera and vitamin E. I get it from Down To Earth. Under ten bucks for 11 and half ounce bottle.
I wanted to add to the post about exfoliating the face. Our entire skin needs to be exfoliated. The best way I have found to do this is by dry skin brushing. I do it with a long handled natural fiber brush, also bought that from Down To Earth. For information on how to do this dry skin brushing, google it. You will find tons of information of the benefits of dry skin brushing. Way too much to post here.

Wow! Mighty interesting reading Peshkwe and Duck! It's not easy being a Lady! It's worth every bit of being one. I like pampering myself. I've been taking care my kids all these years...it's time for myself now. Yep, I'm gonna get myself back in shape and beauty, it might not be the young and vibrant one I use to be twenty years ago but I'll be glowing! ;) :D
Thanks for you advice! I'll invite all the ladies out for Tea when the transformation is complete at Nuunau Tea! :)

Aloha Auntie Lynn,
Can I make a shameless plug here for Physicians Formula makeup? The company never advertises, nor has ever had the need (imo). They make great makeup, all hypo-aller-everything, and its geared for timeless, classic looks, not trendy "I-Can't-Believe-Its-Not-Butter!" colors. The packaging has gotten spiffy over the years, but the stuff is still tried&true and drugstore-cheap.
If you want to indulge in something high-end and you are over 40, laurenhutton.com has a whole line aimed at this market.

Like everything else, I'll check it out. Infact, I believe one of my sister's uses this product, her skin is sensitive. Mahalo for the advice!

Wait a minute!!!!!! I've been out of town for a few days and it looks like maybe you took my post the wrong way. I wasn't actually being serious - just a little joking. If you (and everyone else who disapproved of my post) haven't noticed, I'm very rarely serious - besides, I'm very happily married. I apologize if you took offense to it.

Hi, Stephen. I'm sorry if I offended you with my ranting. I usually don't use smileys, so sometimes I come across as being much more bitchy and rude than I intend to be. It just my odd sense of humor, I guess. (smiley!)

No worries MadAzza - I was referring to the negative feedback that I got on the post. (Insert Shaka)
