Try driving a rental up to a full serve gas station (rarity) and when the attendant asks you to pop open the gas filler, you open the hood, trunk, disengage the parking brake before you pull off the cover to the fuse block, readjust your driver's seat and find your lost cell phone before that gas cap pops open.:D
That is hilarious :-P the same thing happens to me when I go to Lex Brodies' on Queen Street. It's not full serve but they are so busy, they pump your gas for you.

Another trick I learned recently is to take those direct marketing pre paid postage envelopes and stick them in the mail with nothing in them. If we raise the cost of direct marketing, maybe we'd stop getting so much junk mail.

I think Andy Rooney advocated this or something.

Better yet put that business reply card back in the mailbox with another business' address that sent you a business reply card on it as the sender.

Or put your boss' address on all the Playboy and Hustler business reply cards...you know that boss that suspended you for taking a Hawaiian Holiday on a Monday after the three day Veteran's day weekend.

This has to do with my Mom. Let me start off by saying she isn't very political nor does she know too much about the movements going on with Hawaiian sovereignty. She's a very mild person, too much aloha some would say, 100% non political, keeps to herself. What she knows about the issues going on and the people involved I or someone else in the family tells her.

Anyway, my husband, my Mom and I were sitting in my living room, talking story. We got on the subject of Kanaka Maoli. My husband and I start talking about Haunani-Kay Trask's book, From A Native Daughter. Upon my husband saying the name Haunani-Kay, my mother says, out of no where, "Did she go to Kamehameha?" I said, "Yeah." She asks, "How old is she?" I tell her Haunani's age. She goes, "Oh, I wen Kamehameha with her! How is she these days?"

I about died. She knows nothing of the modern day Haunani-Kay. :p

Their personalities are polar opposites. It's quite shocking for me to think of them all friendly back in the day. My mother is so passive. LOL! I'm lending her From A Native Daughter to read, to catch up on how a "KS friend" is doing. :D

Today I read this thread and learned oh so much.

I learned what a newbie I am to the whole forum thing.

I learned what the heck lol was (maybe....)

I learned that what you say here doesn't always come across in the same way it would in person. If I have came across as haughty-toity then I apologize. It was never meant that way. I am just geeky in real life.

I learned a lot more about all of you.

I learned Auntie Lynn should be put on a pedestal for her strength in overcoming so much.

I learned I am too ADD to be able to follow all the threads.

I learned that my husband is right and that I live in an ivory tower. President who?????

From the other threads I have read, I have learned that most of us here have a strong opionion on things and will speak our minds. That is so vital in getting to build an online community and I am enjoying everyones comments.

Keep it up.

I apologize if some of my threads seem like fire starters rather than the getting-to-know-you type of threads.

One of our state birds...the construction crane...has been perched outside my 19th floor window since I bought the place earlier this year. The crane is building a nest...a 42 story building across the street. What I've enjoyed seeing is the American and Hawaiian flags flying from the back end of the crane at night, illuminated by a spotlight. It's very dramatic against the pitch black sky.

What I didn't know but recently learned from a friend is that illuminating the American flag at night is a law (http://www.flagguys.com/etiq.html#night). How did I get so many decades into my lifetime without knowing that? :o

My upcoming New Years resolution is to keep a daily journal of at least one, new thing I learned that day...something to pass along to my grandkids.

I learned today that I can DL the KSDL lesson streams for later (offline) viewing with the following command...

mplayer -noframedrop -dumpstream "`wget -O - 'http://ksmedia.ksbe.edu:8080/ramgen/dl/kulaiwi/high/kulaiwi01.rm?usehostname' | head -1`" -dumpfile kulaiwi01.dump -bandwidth 999999999999

Now I'll have something to do during my 6 hour layover tomorrow in MSP. *AND* the quality looks way better than when I stream it with Realplayer.

Today I read a sports magazine for the first time; the article in ESPN caught my eye about Colt Brennan. Interesting article! I happened to be in the "necessary" room at the time. (Oops! TMI!) Guess I learned you can't tell a magazine by its cover, 'cept this cover had Colt's picture on it.

things i learned today, and it's barely 1PM:

1. if you have $10, a properly filled out application, and a picture ID like your hawaii driver license, you can get a certified copy of your birth certificate while you wait at the dept of health.

2. the line to get a birth, marriage, or death certificate is twenty times longer than to get a marriage application.

3. you can get your passport pic taken and your passport application filed at UH campus center.

4. cafe kaila is a really nummy, pleasant place for breakfast.

aw kani-lehua poor thing your kitty...

today I learned that you should always use a recipe when you cook a meal, even if you've made it a thousand times. Also, I learned that pouring salt in dishes to even out the extra sugar you dumped in doesn't work.

Next time, I'll leave the cooking to my hubby.

i learned this morning about gold bond medicated powder's cultish following, esp in the *ahem* netherlands (http://crankyprof.blogspot.com/2008/05/men-puzzle-me.html).

the reason i found out about this is bcs the baby version of gold bond powder has become my choice as an antiperspirant substitute. some years ago, my armpits suddenly developed an extreme dislike for antiperspirants. i switched brands many times; tried deodorants instead of antiperspirants, and even used the rock for a month--all to no avail. eric suggested cornstarch. i tried regular johnson & johnson's cornstarch initially, then switched to gold bond baby powder. it was like the clouds parted and angels started singing. i've been using it for months now and had intended to post about it on the best purchases of the day thread and decided to do some online product research beforehand--which led me to my "airmen-love-gold-bond-powder" discovery.

apparently, gold bond powder is popular with many men for its cooling, chafe-relieving, "humidity-preventing" properties. the tingling sensation (which doesn't happen with the baby powder version, so i'm unfamiliar) is seemingly addictive as well. it's been a go-to product for many in the military, as far back as the vietnam war.

gold bond seems to be capitalizing on this with its rather amusingly euphemistic "powder my 'equipment'" (http://www.powdermyequipment.com/)ads.

A dwarf planet orbiting beyond Neptune has been designated the third plutoid in the solar system and given the name Makemake, the International Astronomical Union said on Saturday.
Source (http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSN1935449620080719)

I never knew who Makemake was, before seeing this - I only knew the word as a lyric in the song "Kipu Kai."
