One of my favorite teachers says this all the time; I used to think it was lame, but then I realized she's serious. You really do learn something every day.
Today, I learned about the name of that Kailua restaurant Amina Pizzeria. Turns out the owner's name is Amina. I also learned that Amina Pizzeria's a good, clean place with well-made food!
So, what have you learned so far today?

The sports radio station I listen to is having me put together and co-ordinate an episode of a contest they run called "Game Show Friday". "GSF" is a weekly contest, held of course, on Fridays, in which callers to the contest have their sports knowledge tested. My particular episode will deal the college basketball teams that are eligible to compete for the Div. 1 crown national championship..the "Big Dance" basketball tournament held every March and early April.
In garnering facts for this contest, I've learned:
1. That there were 332 college teams who were eligible to compete for the basketball crown at the beginning of the 2004-2005 season.
2. Central Arkansas will soon be eligible to compete for the b-ball championship. I believe they will be able to compete for the title beginning in 2007.
3. Quinnipiac College is the only Div. 1 basketball school eligible for the crown that has the letter "Q" as the first letter of its name.
4. Alaska is the only state among the 50 that does not have a college team in the Div 1 basketball ranks eligible to vie for the championship.
I just learned all of this yesterday!

I think that even if you're not open to it, you still learn something every day, whether you are aware of it or not; whether you wanted to or not.

The enormous LOVE and STRENGTH within me was there. It came through when it was needed, despite my own limitations. I stood strong for my grandson. I wasn't the weakling, the stricken, the mentally ill, I was his GRANDMA...tough to take care of him with his daddy and other grandma too!
Things turned worse yesterday.
He made it through the night and is recovering.
I'm going back to the hospital to be with him again.

So, what have you learned so far today?
I learned that I affect my students more than I know. One of my students has been coming to school for a few days now, having crying fits in the morning (4th gr.). This is unlike her. Come to find out, my flaring temper at a handful of students has really affected her and now I feel this incredible guilt. She has been feeling uncomfortable, is feeling totally stressed out, and doesn't want to come to school---partially because of me. Her mom even told me she's been having nightmares about school and her teacher (me)! I feel horrible. :(
I've also learned that initially "difficult" parents can turn out to be some of the nicest people. As a beginning teacher, I am constantly learning. It's a good thing to remember, Scrivener! I think this will be a new activity for my students---to reflect on what they've learned every day. What a great thread this is. ;)

Today i learned that i can help a friend come to grips with hidden sin. i fumbled & bumbled but was forced forward to confront her. When i finally did (days later) i felt like God gave me compassion, since i knew i had the same sin lurking in my forgiven past. IT WAS TOUGH. But she, me & JC got through it.
I gotta say, it's the first time i tried confrontation (major direct confrontation phobe) & it really worked out.
Lesson: Compassion paired with confession = Release & Restoration.
Lesson: The light we'll shine through this will be longerlasting than any choice made in a moment(s) of weakness.
Thank you to the powers that be for this great confessional! :)

According to www.plantithawaii.com, the acerola fruit was once grown commerically in Puna. The commercial plantings apparently ended when the vitamin manufacturers learned how to make synthetic vitamin C. I never knew this!
If your interested in reading about the acerola plant, go to the above site and follow the link to the acerola or "Barbados cherry". There are also links to just about any other tropical fruits and spices that can be grown in Hawai'i, including vanilla, cacoa, nutmeg, and cloves. Very neat site!

Tonight, on the way home from work, I learned that if you try to enlighten a teenage male driver as to the correct procedure for passing a motorcycle on a dark, wet downtown road by yelling into his car window as he blows past you *in your lane*, he and his equally butt-headed male friend are likely to then try to engage you in a shouting match. Then, when you end up next to each other at a red light and you smile and kindly observe, "If I borrowed my mom's Camry, I'd probably try to show off for my friends, too," the teenage male driver will roll up his window and get as far away from you as possible.

I've told the girls if they don't pick up their toys, especially the Barbie shoes or ANYTHING POLLY POCKET, it will be sucked up and I will NOT reach into that spooky tangle of dust-hair-lint-cat barf, etc., to retrieve it.

I learned today that One-Ton Chips are available again online. After the fire the Maebo Noodle factory suffered a couple years ago, I kind of gave up on them...I couldn't find a single package during my 2003 visit home; I found some exorbitantly priced ones at the Hilo airport in 2004. I placed Maebo's and One-Ton Chips in the back of my mind, thinking that I'd look them up when I'm home this December..if they were to be had great, if not, well, I'll try again next visit.
I don't know how long Maebo's has been up and running, but it evidently has been for some time. I'm not waiting til December to get some...I'm ordering now! The folks at Maebo's have always treated me well. I've ordered from them via their toll-free line, and they've promptly filled my orders at a price LESS than their web-site quoted. I would query them why the prices they were charging me was less than the prices stated, and they would say something like "For you, a Big Island boy in RI, we'll give you a deal"..they have always been very casual about their pricing with me...they are the best!

Thanks so much for the advice, however.....it's a rental, they just sold it and we have to move. I am trying to get it clean so as to get our security deposit back, which I know is a joke. The place should have been renovated before we moved in nine years ago. The grout is not loose (yet) but has started to crack in a few places. Red dirt is stuck in the cracks. Scrubbing with a tooth brush does nothing. Having a new construction site near by does not help at all.

I've learned that strategically mounting a plastic owl (http://www3.shopping.com/xPC-Life_Sized_Hand_Painted_Great_Horned_Owl) will scare birds away from my fruit trees.
But not for long. Once the birds realize the owl is fake, it's back to the ol' status quo.
I've seen lots of those plastic owls covered with bird droppings.

Rough, rough day. Started off with a huge list of stuff to get done, and barely got through one of the big ones (got some of the small ones done, though). That big one was the assigned reading for my adolescent psych class, and in this reading, I learned that:
In the area of adolescent moral development, in recent years there's been lots and lots of research on adolescents' aggressive and antisocial behavior, but very little on prosocial behavior.
Adolescence marks a transition from (among other things) a self defined in nonmoral properties (bodily properties, material possessions, or typical behavior) to a self defined in social and psychological terms, and morality is the major regulator of social interactions; thus, it makes sense that this is where a lot of moral development takes place -- adolescents' worlds are expanding beyond their immediate worlds and into the world-at-large, spurring some need to evaluate their roles within this world-at-large, if that makes any sense.
Socratic parenting seems to result in adolescents who are more likely to engage in prosocial behavior (not to mention to avoid antisocial behavior). This means that parents who help their children understand, through reasoning and discussion, why their behaviors are unacceptable, seem to raise kids who stay out of trouble, as opposed to parents who only use the force of their authority. I was unable to tell from my reading if age is a factor here -- it seems obvious that you don't practice Socratic parenting with younger children, but then what do I know about parenting? :)
Strangely (if I read this right), a key factor in positive moral development is conflict with close peer groups. Adolescents who are involved in a moderate degree of conflict (that is, not overly challenging or dominant) with their close friends, perhaps in needing to maintain the relationships, establish a sense of moral justice that indicates positive moral development.
Don't know how interesting any of you find this, and I don't even know if I'm getting it right -- this textbook is denser than Rod Tam -- but this is some of what I learned today.
In the next couple of hours, I hope to learn something about a steak dinner.

The commonly-used terms addressing these parenting styles are 'authoritarian parenting' and 'progressive parenting', and I have found that striking a balance between the two is key. Parent progressively day to day; let this be the foundation of conversation, of "parent-kid debrief sessions" (these happen daily in our hale) of holding everyone in the household accountable for his/her choices (parents foremost!). But the goal is to develop within each of us the compass to discipline ourselves for its own sake.
And on the flip side.... it is an empowering thing if a kid knows that their mom who posesses a high IQ is also a tita. Or if push come to shove, their dad could (and would) easily take on a bully's dad and hash things out until it resolves itself. Learning how to fight and resolve. Fight and forgive. Stand up for oneself, someone in need, or the noble point. Doing so is rooted in authoritative behavior, and it takes a good deal of trial, risk and error to learn how. And not everyone does.
Yet every effective leader I know has struck this balance, but s/he doesn't get there soley due to Socratic (or Spartan) parents.
And my favorite e-fountain to quench my inner Warrior Mamma:

This also applies in the business world too, with managers and supervisors and how they treat their employees and workgroups, only there it's called "Micromanagement" v. "modern management" or "teamwork". :)
Supervisors who micromanage don't give their employees any credit for having brains and think they are the only ones who know how to do a job (wrong!). Supervisors and managers who believe in teamwork respect the skills and abilities of each team member as each adds synergystically to the success of a task. No one individual can be everything, and each team member brings to the table a skillset of strengths and weaknesses. The trick is to nurture the strengths in each person so that the weaknesses are overcome by the strengths of others.
OD people say if you watch what happens to kids as they grow up (as in child and adolescent psychology), you can extrapolate it into the adult world. Every relationship has at least 4 phases of development: forming, storming, norming, and performing. Forming is when the group first evolves. Storming happens when individuals in the group try to determine their position in their group. Norming happens when everyone in the group understands their place and agrees to work toward a common goal, and performing happens when everyone does what they committed to do to get the job done.
Same thing happens on the first day of school. :p

P.S. the same thing happens here on HT when newbies first decide to start posting. And some people never get out of the storming phase of development.

When making a post next to the insert picture/graphic icon there is the blue dots and 3 lines icon that says "Create List". I tried it a long time ago and it did not work. In my days of dating (and I've dated a lot) I discovered then that if you stay focused on who you are and be good at it, the kind of people you need to have a relationship with will gravitate to you. In otherwords, you will attract the kind of person you need simply because of who you are.
If you seem to be attracting the wrong person everytime, well it's time to re-evaluate your outward image and try to be who you really are instead of who you want to be.
How do you do this somewhat insurmountable feat? Just be yourself and the right person will find you. These aren't just pie in the sky words, this is from someone who yearned for a date in high school, dated women because I adapted to their attitudes (was used), then decided that I had to focus on #1 because if I'm not happy with myself how in the world would anybody else be? You be good to yourself, then other people will see the good in you and will want to be with you.
I focused on being confident and good at what I did and it was simply amazing at how I managed to get dates I never thought I could ever achieve. There I learned that women like guys with a positive attitude not guys that are desparate. I was so desparate to date a woman I scared them away. Now I'm so laid back my wife get's paranoid whenever we go out and a female looks our way. I look at my wife while holding her hand and kiss her to remind her that she's my #1

Hey. Make up your mind!
When I married her I devoted my life to her so she became my most important person in my world.
I know it's gambling a lot but for her I give her my total life as I trust her with it. She knows it and together we live our lives as one. Our children base their lives on our foundation we created together and depend on our stability to base their own foundations in relationships they encounter.
The success of your children are based on the foundations of the family. The strength of that foundation comes from the marriage of the husband and wife that forged it. It takes two to form a marriage, it takes two to form a family. You break that partnership, you break the family. My wife and I live for each other, the children see that and are assured that their foundations for which their lives are based on is a solid one.
From that our children see the love we have for each other and at the same time develop an independance from us so that one day they too can form their own partnership and family.
So maybe I should rephrase that previous statement and it should be that the marriage between my wife and I are #1. Everything else simply falls into line from that success.

There's a columnist named John Rosemond who says all the time what you're saying--that the family should not revolve around the children, that the marriage comes first. I've agreed with this and believed it my whole life, but nowadays it's hard to find others who also agree, especially in Hawaii. "I'd do anything for my kids," you often hear people say, and that just makes me want to scream. I find your words refreshing and encouraging.

I find your words refreshing and encouraging.Ugh. John Rosemond gets on my nerves. I mostly agree with his marriage-first-and-the-kids-will-be-fine approach, but I always get this ultra conservative vibe from his columns that sets my teeth on edge.

He's very conservative, so I understand. However, I like him. A lot. I must be very, very conservative in my views on parenting.
You know, so many of my fellow Christians come across as fanatical or just plain stupid; it's nice, I think, when some of them come across as reasonable and intelligent. I totally, totally understand why a lot of people dislike him, but I'm glad he's there. He gives me hope that there can be intelligent discourse from both ends of the political spectrum if enough respect is paid both ways.

When my mother and father were talking divorce recently (after 50+years of marriage) I told them that to each other they are different people with no biological connection other than the saliva they pass to each other when the kiss.
But to us as their children, they are our what binds us as their children. When they tear the marriage apart, they are literally tearing the children apart as well. I don't mean having to choose which parent to live with, but when the foundation crumbles so does the child's basis for existance. Their lives were based on the foundations of the family they grew up in, now that very ground has shaken and has left the children without something to land on.
This is why the marriage is THE most important element in any family. Biologically speaking, without the marriage there is no family unit. Without that unit how does one validate their existance anymore other than to boldly proclaim their own existance.
For kids who love both parents and have to witness a divorce, the trauma can be only described as being an astronaut out in space and seeing the Earth blown apart. What do you do now? What you thought was Mother Earth is no longer there. Your foundations for existance has been blown apart and there is nothing left to love. You literally feel abandoned.
So if one has to say it's for the children, then for the sake of them, keep the marriage solvent so they can believe their foundations will always be there to catch them when they fail...and in life they will over and over again. It's up to their parents to pick them up and tell them it's alright to fail but to get up and try again. How can a parent validate that advice if their own marriage failed and no attempt was made to keep the marriage a healthy one.
A solid marriage can authenticate the reality that life can perpetuate but only thru a solid basis for existance. Children need that comfort that their lives have meaning and their parents are there to nurture it whether they're too young to realize it or in adulthood.

Hah! Sure can! Sometimes I don't even remember why! Oh yeah, now I do: No raises, no vacation time, cuts in pay, increased hours without parallel compensation, a monthly tongue lashing for my inability to measure up! So maybe you've won him over! Maybe if you make it to the 2+ year mark, you get some respect. Wait. I worked there for more than 2 years. Not that you do, but I think it might have been my inability to suck up. I always thought playing soccer in the mud looked like more fun than playing on a dry field! (the mud helps soften the falls) I dunno how many times I ended up watching my friend's daughter playing soccer while standing in the rain. ...Mokoli`i, or Chinaman's Hat, was named for its resemblance to a lizard's tail!
And frankly I don't see a resemblence to a tail at all. It sure looks like a Chinaman's Hat (yes Kahalabrah!) and that is what I have always known it to be, other than the island's Hawaiian name of course.
And since I never watched the Muppets TV show, I never knew they even had a house band, less knew what their names were. So those are 2 things I learned today.

Yes, you can learn a lot of things over here, such as the detailed usage of the English language in the ongoing HawaiiThreads trivia game... Polish, Herb, Lima, whatevers.... it is interesting to know this especially since most of us don't take the time to learn this stuff on our own.... Here it is a much less formal area than say a school, so in a way learning is kind of fun, no matter how strange.
Of course like anything that is so easy to consume, take everything you think you learned here with a grain of salt. There are so many opinions here!

chinaman's hat is the end of the tail of a mo'o described by the ridgeline that towers above kualoa ranch...the head is pointed at the highway...the rest of the tail is under water...it takes imagination, but if you look at it long enough, it's there...

South Beach is a modified Atkins diet. Oddly enough, lavagal, within the first few days the desire for wine, along with the desire for anything that turns into sugar in the body, just goes away...gone...pau! The purpose of those first 2 weeks is to rid the body of carb cravings. I was over the cravings within 24 hours. The withdrawal headache took another 36 hours to get over! It was worth it. I had absolutely no interest in wine for the 8 months I was on Atkins. BTW...I was on it for medical reasons and not for weight loss. I lost a little weight, not much, but I felt like a million bucks. It's time to cut the carbs again!

God, you wimp! You owe her no apology, and now you are training her to treat you like something less than a man. What, she's right just because she's the female? Puh-leeze!!
If a guy can't enjoy time on his own, doing stuff with his friends, without his wife getting ticked off, then ... jeez, how insecure is the wife? And why doesn't she trust her husband? No fault of his, I'm sure. She needs to examine her insecurities so they aren't repeated.
More guys need to spend time away from their wives/lovers. We women need time alone, too, ya know! Those few women who don't need time alone are fine and all, but they need to understand that sometimes a guy has to do his own thing, and so does a woman.

Edited to add this thought: If a man berated a woman for spending time with her friends, her friends (and the people on Hawaii Threads) would urge her to leave him and to file a restraining order against him, because obviously he's "abusive." Why is it OK for women to keep men away from their friends, and from other things that they love about life?
This whole thing really pisses me off.

He shouldn't "smooth (sic) things over"! He should demand an apology for her mistreatment of him.

And guys, stop putting up with that shit.
We tried back in the 70's and lost so many of us became gay. :D
The problem is that if we didn't take that shit we were considered insensitive and sent to some remedial group. If we did take that shit we were considered wimps.
So an entire generation of men had to be born into society to become sensitive without being a wimp and agressive without being the pig that we are. The result: Bill Clinton. Now here's a man that can cheat on his wife and yet not get his wife and the National Organization of Women on his shit list. Amazing yet true. He's the poster child on how to be a man. He got both and won and to think he went to church as well. How does he do it!

Both MadAzza and Alohabear are right! Yes I'm a wimp and secondly I just want to shut down the argument. ManoaSurfer123, sometimes there is some sort of wierd jealousy concerning HT. She'll be watching some movie on T.V. that I have no interest in, (I don't watch much T.V. of any kind for many years now) and strongly requests I get off the computer to join her, I usually don't. But relationships are give and take and I prefer "Peacetime" over "War". You know what I mean? Peace, Love and Alphalfa sprouts Man!
Some females as well as some males have very controlling natures. So even if what the other is doing does not adversly affect the first, but they don't like it they try and force their opinion upon them.
My Bestest friend James' place was my sanctuary. That's where I would go to be with a buddy, drink a few, play backgammon or cards and just plain laugh! He was single so I could show up anytime. I miss that guy! The rest of my friends are married or close enough to it that it's the same kinda situation as my place is, at times. I'm really not into bars so guess I'll just have to find a nice quiet spot up in the bushes someplace. Since it's not safe in many respects to go out the Helipad at Ala Wai Boat Harbor anymore. HaHa!

Today I learned that their are Glaciers in Africa...
I wouldn't have even thought about Ice Cold Glaciers in a country like Africa.
(I also learned that they will soon be gone)

Since you're on a roll let me school you a bit. Africa is a continent, not a country. Tanzania and Kenya are the countries with the highest mountains on the continent of Africa.
Btw when reports of snowy peaks at the equator first reached Europe they were dismissed as impossible.

Today I learned that in stage lighting, calcium oxide, or lime, is heated to incandescence to produce light. Hence the term, "limelight".

Good one. Next time you see a stage performance, look up at the lights. You'll usually two types: short lights with wide diamaters, usually closer to the stage and aimed at steeper angles, and longer lights with narrow diameters, usually much further back and aimed at more gradual angles.
The short ones are called Fresnels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresnel_lantern) and are used for area-lighting, especially with softer definition, as when only half the stage needs to be lit, or a specific spot in the back.
The long ones are called ellipsoidals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsoidal), though I've sometimes heard them called ellipticals (a name I prefer); they light areas with a more sharply defined edge and usually a much longer "throw."
Just a little bit of bonus info. I'll bet Helen knows a lot more than that.

I also learned on the same day that a raspberry, or the "pppttthhhbbtth" sound you make with your tongue, is called so because it evolved from Cockney rhyming slang. It's short for "raspberry tart", and "tart" rhymes with...well, you know. :)

I learned that GEICO (the auto insurance company) stood for "Government Employees Insurance COmpany"
I have yet to learn if its tailored towards gov't employees (raising the question why my parents have it) or the gov't is controlling it.

It started off as targeting government employees but branched out decades ago, which is why it's not called that anymore.
