Want to take the family to be with my Dad and future stepmom down Naalehu way for Christmas. Should I be buying tix now or wait a little longer? They seem to be going steadily higher week by week. I was hoping for some special offer as the holidays approach. Am I blowin' it?

Travelling at Xmas time bites. Go after the new year, and you can probably afford to stay longer - that should be a nice present to your family.

Now that's pretty funny regardless of spelling.

Generally speaking, I feel the earlier you book the better. With airlines going under left and right, though, who knows these days.

The only reason prices will drop close to the preferred departure date is if you start getting into last-minute sales, which aren't guaranteed. I agree, though, coming to Hawaii at the peak of Christmas season means just about everything will be overpriced. Give them the news of a trip for Christmas... but book for the off season.

Whenever you decide to buy your tickets (probably the earlier the better), also check out Island Air. They're supposed to be a little cheaper than the big boys now, and they still allow you to fly free on standby. Might save you some change.

Well friends sometimes things go your way. Got an email this morning from Expedia and was able to buy four roundtrip tix to Kona-Kailua from Los Angeles for $423/ea. Two non-stop flights with a redeye return. Perfection. I am so stoked. Haven't set foot on Hawaii since '96.
