A great selection, all of which I'd be happy to hear again.

My own list:

Jefferson Starship: Blows Against the Empire
Rolling Stones: Aftermath
Fleetwood Mac: Rumours
Rolling Stones: Sticky Fingers
Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced
Woodstock
The Greaseband (self-titled, I think, the only album they did without Cocker)
Cat Stevens, but I can't single out one of them, so I'll just say all of
them and let it end my list

>> Jefferson Starship <<

MTV (or maybe VH-1) has been airing a show recently called The Worst Songs Of All Time, and the Starship's "We Built This City" came in as the #1 Worst Song ever. Go figure. I liked the hell out of it!

>> The Greaseband (self-titled, I think, the only album they did without Cocker) <<

Joe Cocker now runs a bed & breakfast in Crawford, Colorado!

I'm sure if I thought about it, I could come up with a thoroughly cool and colorful list, but off the top of my head over my late lunch break, I've got:

Debut by Bjork
IV (Symbols) by Led Zeppelin
Lincoln by They Might be Giants
Gordon by Barenaked Ladies
Play by Moby
40 oz. to Freedom by Sublime
Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins
Cross of Changes by Enigma
Smash by Offspring
Hapa (Eponymous)
These aren't in order or preference or anything, obviously. Hell, I had five more already lining up in my head. The "final list" would probably have a little more Hawaiian (older stuff), some old ska (Dancehall Crashers), and maybe techno (Prodigy).

I have a Top 30 List (http://macpro.freeshell.org/music/Top30Albums.html) of all time, but from that list here are my Top 10 albums... of all time... at least for now. The albums occasionally change on my list but not by much. Over the years I have enjoyed the following:

1. Abbey Road - The Beatles (1969)
2. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John (1973)
3. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac (1977)
4. Sgt. Peppers’ Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles (1967)
5. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac (1975)
6. Band on the Run - Paul McCartney & Wings (1974)
7. A Hard Days’ Night - The Beatles (1964)
8. Revolver - The Beatles (1966)
9. Parallel Lines - Blondie (1979)
10. Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin (1971)

>> Jefferson Starship <<

"MTV (or maybe VH-1) has been airing a show recently called The Worst Songs Of All Time, and the Starship's "We Built This City" came in as the #1 Worst Song ever. Go figure. I liked the hell out of it!"

I heard about this, was baffled. Not one of my favorite Starship tracks but ye gods, they had SO many other options. Little Richard and "Tutti Frutti", the Beatles and "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", etc. etc. But okay, my choice would be Sonny and Cher's "You Got Me Babe".

>> The Greaseband (self-titled, I think, the only album they did without Cocker) <<

"Joe Cocker now runs a bed & breakfast in Crawford, Colorado!"

I loved his band, but was not really a Cocker fan. Even so, seems a waste.

But then, I hear, we have Harold Kama, Jr. and John Feary, two of the most talented young local musicians in these islands, driving Budweiser delivery trucks.

[sigh deeply]

Can't argue with most of your suggestions. For me the Velvet Underground album featuring Nico(with the Warhol banana on the cover) would have to be up there.

Duran Duran, Rio (1983 US Remaster)
Kronos Quartet, Black Angels
John Zorn, Naked City
Cocco, Bougainvillia
Emmylou Harris, Wrecking Ball
Robin Holcomb, Robin Holcomb
U2, The Joshua Tree
Number Girl, School Girl Distortional Addict
Shiina Ringo, Muzai Moratorium
In Tua Nua, The Long Acre

Truthfully, the last five spots are up for grabs, because there's a lot of stuff I wouldn't mind sneaking in -- the Sugarcubes' Life's Too Good, Camper Van Beethoven's Key Lime Pie, Wayne Horvitz's Miracle Mile, Talitha Mackenzie's Solas, Midnight Oil's Diesel and Dust ...

I just realized ...

My mind blotted out the "of all time ..." in the subject title, and I went on automatic to post my desert island discs.

Because that kind of list would need to include Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, Nirvana's Nevermind, Henryk Gorecki's Symphony No. 3, N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton ...

My favs would include, oh no, do I have to have the proper names of single CDs? Moody Blues anthology, yes! Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the early stuff especially, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foreigner, and Kansas, man they are my religious rock, and then the Country and Western of the seventies! Then there's the Colours CD by Na Leo Pilimehana, can't hear most of the songs on there enough. Iz, the CD where he is in a pool on the cover, have that one and play it a lot, and I have a new Weldon Kekauoha CD, and saw them play live and they were so much fun.

Music...a variety, one for every mood or situation. I need the Skynyrd and Kansas to exercise to. Glad someone started this thread, and yes, I am 47 and a half. (G)

I wasn't sure where else to post this ...

I feel like I got a STEAL yesterday. A few of 'em, actually, before I stopped myself from spending even more.

First off, I must say that I'm a big supporter of Hungry Ear Records in Kailua, where I prefer to shop for new or gently used CDs.

However, I was shopping in TOWN yesterday -- twins had birthday money burning holes in pockets, so we went to Wal-Mart so they could look at video games. This left mommy dangerously unsupervised in the music section.

The spree made me feel as if I was spending money like a drunken sailor (or soldier, or dentist, etc.).

I got a Led Zep, enhanced (with video) 2 CD set with titled "Early Days & Latter Days," 23 tracks from "Black Dog" and "Immigrant Song," my first favorite tunes from the band, all the way through the 1970s to the In Through the Out Door LP. It's been out for years, but I'd never seen it -- and I got it for $15.88! Unreal.
I replaced my scratched and skipping "Classic Queen" CD (blue cover) for $9.72; I got an Aerosmith "Greatest Hits" (containing songs that have somehow escaped my collection) and a "Best of the Scorpions" CD for $7.50 each. It's one of those 20th Century Masters releases. I thought the "Will Smith Greatest Hits" CD at $12.88 was a good deal too, as my kids join me as big Will Smith fans.

More music to cook (or post to HT) by -- woo hoo!

WalMart is a good place for selected bargain CDs. Sometimes they even have new, current titles on sale for $9.72. The last one I bought at that price was the new album by Jewel Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. Oldies abound for as low as $4.50, though normally around $7.50 to $9.72. Just recently upgraded my Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy with a new CD. My LP is fine, but CD is much more convenient, plus I could burn the tracks to my Mac and iPod. I saw Led Zeppelin II and one of the very first Rolling Stones compilation CDs on sale at WalMart for $9.72. I passed those up because I already own them on CD. Still WalMart is a good place to go for some bargain priced, new CDs.

For used CDs, I usually go to Jelly's.

I guess my age is in the range near Mel and Albert's, for my selections would be similar to theirs.

Albums that I would add to their list or be honorable mention would be:

Neil Young - Harvest
Eric Burdon and the Animals - Never the twain shall meet
Beamer Brothers - Honolulu City Lights
Santana - Santana
Santana - Abraxis
Three Dog Night - Golden Biscuits
Chicago - Chicago Transit Authority
Doors - The Doors
Doors - The Soft Parade
Doors - LA Woman

Three Dog Night - Golden Biscuits

Sadly, this album remains out of print.

However I found that 4 of their earliest releases have been repackaged and are now available as double CDs on one disc each. Check these out:

It Ain't Easy / Naturally (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ECXTAC/qid=1151991955/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/102-7432412-5110514?s=music&v=glance&n=5174) - Naturally is one of my favorite Three Dog Night albums of all time and this would have made it to my list had I expanded it out to a top 20. It Ain't Easy was a hard album to find on CD for several years. Now the 2 are on one disc. Cool.

One / Suitable For Framing (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001N6MP8/qid=1151991955/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/102-7432412-5110514?s=music&v=glance&n=5174) - I should get this CD. I already own the above as single CDs. This is their 1st and 2nd studio albums. Got "One," "Eli's Coming" and "Celebrate" on them plus a Lennon-McCartney song not recorded by The Beatles called "It's For You".

Perhaps the best reissue today is the double CD compilation called Celebrate - The Three Dog Night Story 1965 - 1975 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002OQV/qid=1151991955/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/102-7432412-5110514?s=music&v=glance&n=5174) which features all of their top 40 hits and several popular album tracks and B-sides. This compilation is a must for all Three Dog Night fans.

IMO, I don't think Sgt. Pepper deserves to be in the top 10 albums of all time. Sure the Beatles were brave in experimenting with sounds at the time, but so were the Beach Boys who also came up with unique (and way more harmonious) tunes. Anyway, here's my top 10:

1. MJ - Thriller
2. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
3. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
4. MJ - Off the Wall
5. John Coltrane - My Favorie Things
6. 2pac - Me Against the World
7. Boyz II Men - II
8. Dr. Dre - The Chronic
9. Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
10. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

And being a soundtrack, I don't consider it an album, but I would've included it in the top 10: Grease (original motion picture soundtrack)

6 Michael jackson - Thriller

I don't about "All-Time", but - in respect to their particular genres - here's a just a few of many albums that I consider monumental masterpieces and/or timeless classics, from cover to cover...

Al Di Meola - Land of the Midnight Sun
Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien and Time Machine (the live portion of it)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon & A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Van Halen - Every DLR-era album
Metallica - Master of Puppets and And Justice for All
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime & Empire
The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta & Synchronicity
Sade - Diamond Life & Love Deluxe
Bob Marley - Babylon By Bus (live)
UB40 - CCCP: Live in Moscow (out of print?)
Grease - The original movie soundtrack (since someone else here mentioned SNF)
Makaha Sons - Kuikawa
Kalapana - Back in Your Heart (out of print?)

I agree (for the most part) with everyone else here on their picks. I could never pick only 10 albums. There's just way too much good music in so many genres recorded up to this date for to limit that amount.

It was 40 years ago today, that The Beatles' landmark album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sgt._Pepper's_Lonely_Hearts_Club_Band) was released for the first time. Yep, 1967 was a long time ago and I was only a kid... but when I heard various tracks from it on the radio, I surely wanted to get it and eventually did! One of the best albums of all time. Unforgettable music including the title track, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "Lovely Rita," "When I'm 64", "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" and the epic "A Day in the Life" among others. Truly a classic worthy of iTunes play today, and everyday if possible! :)

Thanks for 40 years of great memorable music!

Like Alabama~ Alabama - Greatest Hits
Or maybe anyone else country who is a legend.

I must be the minority. Including country in my CD collection.

Hawaii, Honolulu in particular, is probably not very big on country music. If you look at the history of country radio in Hawaii, it has been only marginally successful through the years. Hawaii's had its moments in country music, but the genre was and has never been as popular as rock, top 40, Hawaiian, and lately reggae, hip hop and other forms of music.

For about 4 years Honolulu did not have a country music station until KHCM hit the airwaves on the AM dial about 2003 to fill the void. We had one FM country station in Honolulu, but it only lasted from about 1988 to 1991. Maui still has one full time FM country station which has been in that format for about 10 years now at 94.3 on the dial. Last I checked the Big island has one in the Hilo area too. So there are niches.

If you go out into the country like on the Big Island of Hawaii, possibly Maui and on some of the military bases, you will find an audience for country music. My mom grew up with the music and I have over the years listened to a lot of older country stars and legend to the point that I have a small collection of LPs, 45s and CDs in my inventory of thousands of recordings.

My favorite artists are the classics: Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, Tammy Wynette, Elvis Presley (he recorded a bunch of country tracks), Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, and Randy Travis to name a few.

It seems to me that country music is driven more by hit singles vs. memorable albums.

Hey Mel! Thanks for that information. I had no idea.
It really was informative to me. So thanks. :D
I didn't understand country was not around as much, I guess as Hawaiian music is not a main station in Oregon or Virginia either. Hmmm...go figure.

OH! And I recently saw randy Travis in concert! wow I loved that, he puts on a real old style gospel almost country music show...very cool. Brought me to tears many songs.

But I do have to disagree that there are MANY full albums in country that are highly successful. Randy Travis having 2 and Reba, and the Judds as well.

Hawaii, Honolulu in particular, is probably not very big on country music. That's probably why Melveen Leed heads for Nashville when she makes country recordings, rather than using locals. Ledward Ka`apana has a healthy respect for country's roots - that shows up in some of his music to a degree, but pure country? Not so much.

Oh yes there are, I won't disagree with that. Country albums sell in the millions too just like other popular music. From a historic perspective, I can hardly think of many country albums that stand out on their own in terms of a complete package. The one that stands out for me is Johnny Cash live At Folsom Prison on Columbia Records.

Perhaps it is my interest in country music was late in coming and that most of the songs I know were hit singles and reissued on many compilation albums which are certainly popular if you just want to get all the hits.

That's probably why Melveen Leed heads for Nashville when she makes country recordings, rather than using locals. Ledward Ka`apana has a healthy respect for country's roots - that shows up in some of his music to a degree, but pure country? Not so much.

It is kind of funny to think that Hawaii artists don't record country and when they do they go elsewhere. BTW, didn't the steel guitar become popular in Hawaii before it was widely adopted by country music?

I think if we had to gather all of the country music albums produced in Hawaii we couldn't even fill one single LP crate with them. The only one besides the handful of Melveen Leed albums that I can think of is by Becky Mello, who first appeared on the Homegrown II album and later came out with one single album (the I have) in 1978 or so. Any other Hawaii produced country albums a country fan should know about?

I go more for particular artists rather than individual albums -

John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Nnenna Freelon, Renee Olstead, Michael Buble, Billie Holliday, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Jack Johnson, Empty Hats, anything my students have recorded, Aaron Goldberg Trio, Dan Monroe, Amy Winehouse

I'm sure I'm leaving out some. Some of these have been an inspiration to me and others I have worked with and/or are friends with, and others I just admire as artists.

Specific songs I like -

Dear Prudence - the Beatles - first use of a sub-kick mic.
Revolution 19 (18?) - John Lennon - first use of sampling (the old school way)
Goodbye My Lover - James Blunt - piano was recorded in Cary Fisher's bathroom - if you listen closely you can hear the difference in reverb between the voice and piano (not artificial)

That's all I can think of right now and probably more than anyone wanted to know (a smilely face should go here but they don't seem to be working).

Love, love, LOVE the new Amy Winehouse album. The Dap-Kings backing her up make it 'specially funky--weird Etta James, Ronettes vibe to it.

I agree 100%. A friend of my son went out of his way to bring me a copy. He said "you gotta listen to this - you're going to love it!" - and he was right.

While not in my all time top 10, I too bought the Amy Winehouse album a few weeks ago when it was on sale at BestBuy for $8 on a friend's recommendation. Good and soulful music, several of the songs are added to my iTunes high rotation playlist now.

What's wrong with that? Nothing to my opinion.
