What was really bizzare was that this morning at around 8am while walking to another building to attend a meeting, the sky was blue, no clouds and no wind, great weather to fly model rockets in. After the meeting around 9:30 am, dark clouds. Well at least it's not that windy.

At midday today, I was sure we were in for clear blue skies for some time! By the time I was driving home, the sky was starting to look pretty darn spooky.

I'll take heavy rains over a hurricane anyday, though. Besides, thunderstorms are kinda cool.

While rainfall was diminishing, excessive runoff and saturated soil from earlier rain will continue to cause flash flooding of streams, highways, underpasses and low-lying areas.

Makaha...a bit overcast but still a beach day; warm and humid but not uncomfortably so.

Yesterday, early afternoon, I was talking on the phone with a friend and he interrupted the conversation with..."Wow! It's pouring here.". 'Here' is Makaha Valley! I'm down the street, on the ocean. No rain and plenty people on the beach! We never did get the downpour that those just a mile or so away experienced.

Well, lightning strikes certainly aren't an everyday occurrance anywhere in Hawaii! We had lightning strikes hit two jets out of HNL, one Aloha and one Hawaiian, and they both turned back just in case (no injuries or major damage, though). There was also the strike on a poor coconut tree in Kailua. Whew!

Whoa easy tiger! I love/appreciate rain... that's why my side of the island is so green. But yeah it's kinda funny (to me) how some start running for cover when it's raining lightly or even drizzling.."whoa it's raining!" lol. Rain is the norm here in the Kahalu'u/Ahuimanu area... almost kinda like Hilo.

Last time I went to Lihu'e, (December 2003) I flew there via Hawaiian. It was the first flight to Lihu'e of the day, and all told, the 35 minute flight from Honolulu was uneventful. Well it was, until my plane's final landing approach to LIH airport was interrupted by a thunder storm which appeared at the last minute. I remember seeing Lihu'e and the Hoary Ridge Range clearly from my window seat, as we made our descent..I thought all was well. Then the pilot all of a sudden did a full power thrust up, we started gaining altitude, and started headed back in the direction of O'ahu. We flew towards O'ahu, or maybe we were in a holding pattern for at least ten minutes. All the while, there was no explanation why the landing had been aborted so suddenly. Maybe 5 minutes later the pilot came on the plane's intercom and explained about the thunder storm with lightning that appeared over the runway that we were to land on, and he wasn't about to put the 717 down until the storm cleared. It was kind of scary!

Hearing all you O'ahu people go on about a little rain makes this Hilo native laugh. Well, it was much more than just "a little rain". As Cezanne noted, we're used to rain here on the windward side of O`ahu just like you are in Hilo. You may have noticed that we don't usually talk about the everyday rain, but in this case it was a full-tilt Flash Flood Warning, complete with entire sections of Kamehameha Highway totally submerged and closed, blocking all traffic between Kaneohe and Turtle Bay, and it also caused raw sewage spills, etc. So yeah, it was far more than the "just a little rain" that you're laughing at.

Heck, I know streets and schools shut down fairly frequently due to rain and flooding, but the only time I was directly affected by rain-related closures was... you guessed, it, while living in Hilo. A particularly wet day prompted UHH to cancel classes.

I remember walking back to my dorm room, incredulous. "Hilo cancelling classes because of rain? That's like... Michigan cancelling classes because of snow, or Arizona cancelling classes because of sun!"

Could the tragic helicopter accident (http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050926/NEWS01/509260316) on Kauai be attributed to the effects of Jova? Survivors indicated that everything was going fine until the copter flew into a "wall of rain" and headed into the ocean.

"...interviews with the surviving passengers indicated the aircraft had been flying uneventfully when the passengers saw what they described as a "wall of rain."

"The helicopter flew in there. They couldn't see. And suddenly they were near water," she said.

Charnon said the pilot reported that on entering the system he maintained visual contact with the shore and was attempting to turn the helicopter to fly back out of the storm when he experienced "a rapid sink rate." Eckrote said the pilot also reported reduced rotor speed before his aircraft hit the ocean.

Residents have described the sudden thunderstorm that appeared over Kaua'i's north shore valleys as intense, with heavy rain and flash flooding, thunder, lightning and strong wind. Charnon's interviews yielded almost identical descriptions of weather conditions from the crash survivors.

They recall "thunder and lightning, and torrential rainpours" following the crash, she said...."

I should have mentioned that event happened in April of 1979. At the time I was working at Hawaii Community College as a student help and the building where I was working at had a dip in the ground about 2 feet deep. I don't know what really happen but the storm drain in the ground was stuck up and there was water in that dip. Some other students from the dorm on the other side of the dip got out the surfboards and was having fun in the water.

Do you get those problems because a lot of the natural drainage is gone due to overpopulation? BTW... It looks like we will see some rain again this weekend. I know it's better than a hurricane.... The only hurricane I want to see is that drink from the Hard Rock Cafe! (http://www.hardrock.com/locations/cafes/documents/hrc_us_drinks.pdf) :D

Woo hoo!

Torrential downpour here in Mililani. A wall of water. Gutters are overloaded, blowing water several feet but still overflowing off the roof. The street's a river - walking in it to pick up my daughter from the neighbor's house, each step created a wake. It looked like I was water skiing standing still!

Had to shut all the windows - water was coming in sideways. Pulled out the flashlights, in case we lose power. May even lose cable and DSL, depending on how waterlogged things get.

Bright flashes of lighting, 10-12 second delays before the crash of thunder. How exciting!

Storms are really exciting! Especially if you don't have to worry about driving or going to work. Maybe it's because they are "electrical," but storms just invigorate me!

It was cool how the thunder came so soon after the flash flood warnings on tv. I love these chilly nites---going to have to dig out the extra blankets! :D

From here in Kaneohe I could see lightning every 10 to 12 seconds at around 9pm last night, when you folks in central O`ahu were getting slammed. Hope all of you are okay and didn't have any damage.
It's 7am here, and no wind at all except for tiny puffs from the south. Beautiful sunrise!
Looking at the radar picture just now, there's a huge system south of O`ahu and heading this way, and the colors of the image show very heavy rain and, probably, more lightning. I'd guess we'll see/feel it around 10 or 11 this morning.

Aha! It was around 9p last night that I saw those very faint flashes in Makaha. Musta been the residual light from windward or central Oahu. Whatta beautiful morning it is in Makaha...blue skies, white clouds, people already on the beach fishing, beachcombing, feeding the birds and swimming. I wonder how long that will last! Weather forcast for today: Mosty sunny skies with a chance of a few windward and mauka showers. Tonight calls for scattered showers mainly windward and mauka. Todays high in the upper 80's, low in the lower 70's trades 5-10 MPH! No marine warnings in effect...but watch out for those army men!

That's pretty much been the same weather report I've always given for over 20-years of doing it. You could actually record it and play it year after year after year. Since if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes!

it's just past 10am in Kea'au and it's not too bad, just overcast. Last night however in Hilo was as if the world was coming to an end!

Which brings me to an interesting situation last night. I was grocery shopping at KTA (my wife made me go there) around 10pm and a clerk told me if I heard anything about an impending earthquake and tsunami that is supposed to hit the Hawaiian Islands soon. She said some Mormons were told to fly back home to their respective islands while at a function in Honolulu yesterday.

Apparently these Mormons were going door to door here in Hilo asking residents to prepare for an evacuation soon.

I haven't heard anything in the news nor has my wife. With last night's thunder and lightning, it kinda spooked me a bit. Anyone hear of anything regarding the Mormons and impending natural disasters locally?

I don't think it's S.A.D. (http://www.nmha.org/infoctr/factsheets/27.cfm) or anything (seems any variation from "perfectly happy" is a disorder these days), but I certainly find myself craving a blast of sun lately, and neurotically turn on every light in the house.

That was amazing yesterday...no pause between lightning and thunder! Was so funny 'cuz at the time I was auditioning teen guys for a movie and the scene involved lots of heavy, angry emotions. The director had each group of 4 boys start out by pushing and shoving each other to get them 'in the mood'. Just as I rolled the camera, the director shouted 'action' and the kids started yelling at each other...the thunder struck so loud it scared all the testosterone outta the boys!!! Was so funny to see 'em go from all moked up to startled with one big boom of thunder!
