View Full Version : Who has Road Runner internet ?

Does any one use Road Runner internet connection ?
I am sick and tired of this Verizon DSL (what ever their new name is) and want to get rid of it. Between paying that bill and the other bill from Bizwind Kimchee every month, (which I have never understood what it is for)........ it is kind of ridiculous.
I have no idea what to expect from Road Runner and would like to know. Please tell me all.
TIA

I also use to have Verizon DSL then I changed to Dial-up due to my HP Computer being out of whack. Now that it's working, I'm going to stick with Hawaiian Tel (the new name) that took over Verizon in Hawai'i...cheaper by $15.00. From what the commercial says on t.v. LOL I'm calling them tomarrow.
Currently, I'm paying an average of $100.00 for Dial-up and Land line which is quite expensive. That's not including the cell bill. Anybody know of a better plan or option that is out there?

I had Oceanic RoadRunner. Happily switched to Verizon DSL and will never go back. Well... okay, even if Oceanic dropped its price to $14.95 a month, I'd still have to think about it a moment.
I've had my hair-pulling evenings with DSL, but nothing compared to the hell RoadRunner was. Always having a connection didn't matter much if I was getting only a few kilobytes a minute. Maybe when I was younger, waiting until 1 a.m. for more bandwidth was fine, but...
What on earth is Kimchee.net (http://www.kimchee.net/)/Bizwind (http://www.bizwind.com/) (the same company) billing you for, if you're paying for Verizon service direct? (And that Kimchee homepage is obnoxious. I'd dump them for that alone!) I imagine Kimchee might be a reseller, but getting all those bills, I'd be worried that you're double or triple paying for something.

Heck yeah.
If dial-up's good enough for you, I always recommend FlexNet (http://www.flex.com), which is just ten bucks a month and reliable as can be. FlexNet boasts that for this great deal, you will get absolutely zero tech support, but you don't need it -- you've got all the tech support you need right here at HawaiiThreads. I'm sure Adrian would be happy to come to your house to set it up for you, too.

I've used RR for over five years now, both on the Mainland and here in HI. Other than the long wait time to have it installed, I have no complaints. No outages (here in Waikiki and in Columbus, OH), they've helped me every time I've had a problem, and though they are expensive, I guess I've never known anybody else and am reluctant to switch to something less expensive, due to my positive experiences with RR thus far. (Knock on wood).
The only thing that caused me alarm was when the service technician came to my house once and couldn't figure out something about the externals on my new computer. He figured it out eventually though.

I have Verizon DSL and love it. While I'm still a lava.net fan and continue to hang on to my dial-up account...just in case...it looks like kimchee.net does repackage and resell DSL like lava.net does. DSL is so much more expensive that way and in the case of lava.net, you're paying for customer service and tech support...an area where they shine. Can't say the same for Verizon! I pay a total of $54./mo. for both accounts. That does not include the monthly phone bill. It would cost me another $40./mo. for commercial DSL at the office which, eventually, I'll do thru Hawaiian Telcom.
Verizon DSL is supposed to be 'plug and play'. Yah! Right! I spent one entire week-end getting it to a point where I could use it and that was with some phone help from some very techie friends. Verizon's off-shore tech support was completely clueless. That's when we could understand what the other was saying!
Is anyone familiar with satellite broadband? There's a 'hot spot' in my office but, wow, is it ever tempermental. Not just for me but for everyone who's tried it with their laptops. I'm wondering if it's that tempermental for the actual subscriber.

Someone I know who lives in a rural area on the Big Island has Oceanic Cable internet. Her connection is usually always fast. Someone I knew who used to live here in Honolulu had Oceanic Cable internet and her connection was spotty. It was good some of the time, but at other times I guess with everyone else in her neighborhood online at the same time, the connection slowed down. Not to mention that tech support issues for Macs had to be referred to someone in Ontario.
Personally after being a longtime dial-up customer at lava.net, I changed over to DSL with lava.net. It is not cheap, but then again lava.net has great tech support, they have people right here in Honolulu who know stuff about Macs and they provide me with an almost fool proof spam filter.
I can also vouch for FlexNet dialup if needed. It's good to have a dialup account if you have like a laptop computer and go out into the boonies where there are no wifi hotspots, let alone high speed cable or DSL. Just about everyone has a phone jack in their home or business.

Ok, that's it. I'm confused. I have Dial-up. I can't use my phone because of the land line that is being used by the computer. Hence I want to get DSL. DSL or Hawaiian Tel? Price of Verizon vs Hawaiian Tel $15.00 offer less. Anybody have and know the quality of service of Hawaiian Tel? Which ever is better...I'll go on the commercial for FREE. LOL :p

Auntie...
Do you have a cell phone?
Do you have call forwarding on your land line?
If yes to both, and you're happy with dial-up, just call forward your land line to your cell phone during those times you're online.
Just a thought...

for what it's worth, i've been using road runner for something like 8 years now and i've never had a serious problem. download times are fast for me; don't know if it's just the area i live in.
that's not to say that i like rr, tho. even though you pay a little at first, the price goes up pretty quickly (introductory rate vs regular rate). also, when i moved from one apartment to another in the same building, they insisted that they had to hook me up and they charged me for it. that's such bs.

I have Verizon DSL. Price is about $65 including a phone line which is mandatory. The DSL service requires an active phone account.
I used to have RR but switched due to it being $15 cheaper per month. Both worked equally fine for me. I might go back to RR and drop the phone line as both my wife and I rely entirely on cellular service and seldom ever answer the landline.
My mom uses Flex and has a dialup.

I had Oceanic RoadRunner. Happily switched to Verizon DSL and will never go back. Well... okay, even if Oceanic dropped its price to $14.95 a month, I'd still have to think about it a moment.
From what it says on Oceanic's web site, Road Runner costs $69.95 to install and $44.95 for a month for service.
I've had my hair-pulling evenings with DSL, but nothing compared to the hell RoadRunner was. Always having a connection didn't matter much if I was getting only a few kilobytes a minute. Maybe when I was younger, waiting until 1 a.m. for more bandwidth was fine, but...
Yes we have had hair pulling days and weeks with from Verison (now Hawaiian Tel) DSL. I think we started up our service with them in 2000. To get them on the phone, they put me on hold for one hour. Then the person that I talked to said it was not their problem and that I should call Bizwind. I would call Bizwind and they would tell me to call Verizon. Once Bizwind told me that my computer had a virus, which it did not. The DSL still goes on and off intermittently, not often, but at the prices we pay for it, it is very aggravating. Whne it cuts off, or what ever it is called, I have to unplug the DSL modem, wait a few minutes, and plug it back in. Then it connects to the internet, usually...at least that is how it has been recently.
What on earth is Kimchee.net (http://www.kimchee.net/)/Bizwind (http://www.bizwind.com/) (the same company) billing you for, if you're paying for Verizon service direct? (And that Kimchee homepage is obnoxious. I'd dump them for that alone!) I have no idea what Bizwind/Kimchee does, other than make me really mad when I have to talk to them on the phone....and charge us $21.95 a month. I am computer illiterate. They know this. I am easy to "stall" when there is a problem because I do not know what is going on.
Hawaiian Telecom charges us $32.50 a month for ADSL Bronze + (768K/128K). On another page of the bill from Hawaiian Telecom there is a charge for Dial-up access-Standard Plan $19.95. They also charge $30.88 a month for regulated local service...which is the phone. After taxes etc, the entire Hawaiian Tel charges are close to $100.00 every month. Yes we pay double and triple the way it looks to me. I gave up calling them to find out why, because they give me the run around, and being computer illiterate, (which is obvious to them, when I talk to them) I do not know what to do.
We live in Mililani. We are moving to Moiliili. My idea was to get rid of the land line, get a second cell phone for me, on my man's Nexthell account, get Road Runner for our internet connection and tell the phone company to CENSORED. However after reading about Road Runner hell, I do not know what to do.
Thanks for the information.

The installation process with Verizon DSL is a bit of a challenge. For geeks, it's close to plug-it-in-and-go, but for your average customer, they'd prefer not having to deal with any plugs at all! Our neighbors were happy to swtich to DSL, but I had to go over to help get it set up.
The question is, is the "modem by mail, do it yourself" model still the prevailing one, now that supposedly Hawaiian Telecom is on the case and based here in Hawaii? Is it going to remain until Verizon DSL is truly a Hawaiian Telcom service?

Aunty Lynn's dialup seems fast compared to my DSL (probabably because the connection is being shared by 5 other computers networked together.) I didn't believe it was dial up until I had to reconnect to it after I rebooted the computer.

LavaNet was pretty much the same. Free modem in the mail. Disconnect phone from jack, add on some filter thing and splitter I believe (I'm too lazy to look now), reconnect phone, connect modem, connect router, connect computers. Set network preferences, was done in about 10 to 15 minutes.
As I recall Oceanic Cable was fairly simple to set up too as I did help my former Honolulu friend set her's up to a Power Mac G4 and laptop.
I'm not as geekly as some of you here. I still use OSX 10.3.9 and Mac OS9 and 8 (on an older computer). Geeks tend to use the latest of everything, Mac and/or Windows or even Linux.

Oh ! Well, that does answer my question, in a way. However, I have no way of knowing how fast your DSL is, or how fast Auntie's dial up is.....know what I mean ? I also have heard that Road Runner is as fast as DSL or even faster. I do not see how that could be ? Also, on the web site for Road Runner through Oceanic there is a page that shows the requirements. Now I have no idea if my computer is even compatible. My definition of RAM is ......Aires. I do not know what any of the terms mean. Obviously, we did not set this computer up ourselves. Before any one tries to teach me what computer terms are, let me clue you. I still some times call the monitor my tv screen. It took two people over the internet more than an hour to teach me how to open more than one window at a time. It took several people to teach me how to copy and paste. This was in a chat room and one by one they all gave up. :o
*LOL* How fast is fast and how slow is slow. Guess we all have different definitions of fast and slow.
I see that most people that posted here about Road Runner are not too happy with that service. I just hate to pay all the fees etc., and then find out that I do not like Road Runner either.
What to do, what to do......I have to decide in a few days. Or, just throw the computer and all it's components (is that the right word ?) down the trash chute ! Ha ! I need to find some humor in this situation.

On Aunty Lynn's computer, the speed it connected at was about 53kbps (53 kilobytes per second), and the last time I did a speed test on a website on my DSL, I clocked in at about 1mbps (1 megabits per second), but that was when I was the only person on the network (but I shut off access to the router for everyone else just incase)
And about RR's customer satisfaction, here's a local forum (http://www.forumshawaii.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=194138) that shows similar feels about RR and VZDSL. Also at that forum link, you can check out other internet-related problems (VZDSL has been going up and down for me lately, as you'll see in one of the threads [I'm under the username "y.likebeef"]).

You're probably too young to remember when modems were first on the market. We thought 128k baud was superfast back then (of course, the alternative...no modem at all...sucked, which is how it was when I got my first dual floppy drive IBM PC) :p . The faster the speed, the less productive you become, I think, because the human body can only work at a certain pace. So if the speed at which the data is delivered exceeds the human brain's capacity to comprehend it, why are we asking for more speed all the time? Sometimes it's refreshing to watch the hourglass take a few more seconds to refresh the screen. Since I'm not a gamer, I don't really need the super high speeds that one can attain with broadband most of the time. And if broadband or DSL was so widespread, why hasn't the price for service gone down? What happened to "economies of scale"?

I just got off the phone with Jerry and Kennedy of Hawaiian Tel. Per Jerry @ 643-3456. Hawaiian Tel bought out Verizon DSL. The only things Verizon gives is technical support and billings in regards to customer services till Feb. 2006.
DSL annual fee comes out to $ 49.99 per month. The package deal is
$ 29. 95 per month. When I asked about the $ 15.00 less in the commercial, he said that applies to Cable companies like Oceanic (RR).
There is a one time fee for installation of $ 19.95. No and's, if's, or but's.
The equipment comes free of charge but if you cancel within one year you will be charged.
I subscribed. The installation is by Friday. The equipment should arrive by Monday.
Oh! Per Miss Kennedy, Online and Phone oTechnical Support for Hawaiian Tel will be from the Islands and not from some "distance land!"

in answer to your question (tourquiseduck), i live in a condo in town near central union church/punahou/beretania. download speeds have been general fast for me. as an example and a test, i just went to the blues podcasting site at http://www.roadhousepodcast.com/ and downloaded roadhouse_031.mp3 which is about 41.5 MB; i had a consistent download speed of 400 KB/sec and so downloaded the entire file in about a minute.
if verizon charges about $50/month, that's about the same price as cable/roadrunner. i've never tried verizon so i can't really compare the two but like i said, so far no major problems with roadrunner....

:D I am older than dirt.....trust me, I can remember when the only computers that were available were room sized ones from IBM. One of my first office jobs was keypunch and computer operator. Hows that for old ? Ha, I bet you do not even know what a key punch is ! Hey I can even remember the name of the computer....Was an IBM Systems 3 Model 10. This is the first PC I have ever had. We got in about five years ago. When any thing happens and it does not work right I get on an instant messenger and ask lots of questions to my poor friends that have finally learned to hide from me at times like that.
For me the slower the speed the dumber I get..sitting here spacing out, waiting for the page to load. I remember when we had dial up I would get so mad at having to wait so long I was hardly ever even on the computer.
Then there is the story of Net Zero......that blunder cost over $500.00. I will spare you the details unless you want to hear about it.

I had Road Runner from June 2000 until April 2004. It initally had huge problems
with speed and poor customer service. The latter was the reason why I switched to Verizon Online DSL. You can't beat 3Mbps/768K service for 29.95
a month :). Compare that with Road Runner with 5Mbps/384K for 44.95.

Well depending on the condition of your phone line and your loop length to
the Central Office/Remote Terminal, Road Runner might be your only choice
besides dialup :( .

I tried to call Oceanic this morning to get information about their RR service.....they were "experiencing a high volume of calls" so I hung up and thought I will call them tomorrow...However, after reading the site you sent me to....it is sounding more worse than dial up ! Four year old information or not...if they did it to people before, what is to say that they would not do it again, yeah ? I also need to check out this lava net place thououghly. Earth Link is out...they have a time limit on internet connection......never again, 'nough said. I still do not know what the hell we will do. Still reading and trying to decide.
Thanks for the information.

My man just explained to me why we have all these charges. Here it is :
When we got DSL service in 2000, it was from GTE. At that time, they had us get an ISP....we got Bizwind. So.....we signed up for all that...took weeks to get it all going..and yeah they mailed us the DSL modem, which is a Fujitsu Speedport. I cannot remember exactly how much they charged for installation. I imagine it was a load.
The DSL was miserable to get it going...took us weeks it I remember correctly. We had to go to the computer store and buy stuff...I do not remember what it was.
So, we have paid, since 2000...monthly fees of :
Bronze DSL from ...first it was GTE, then Verizon, now Hawaiian Tel. $32.50
Dial up access (can you believe this ?) @ $19.95
Bizwind/Kimchee charges $21.95 a month.
And the phone bill on top of all this, too.
Now for this big explanation......as per a very long phone conversation(s),we could have changed over (to what ?) and got rid of Bizwind, and kept the DSL service through Verizon......however we would have been off line for weeks before we got connected back up. They also told my man that for him to keep his current email address, which is XXXXX@gte.net we HAD to keep the dial up bill. So, five years later we are still paying all this...double, triple charges, for what ? This is why I just want to get rid of this land line completely and be rid of the whole bill once and for all. I am still thinking, even after reading all the garbage about how bad RR is....we may get it !
I am totally burned out on all this right now. I want to sincerely thank every one that responded to this post. I will be back tomorrow !!

I have not had any major complaints about RR, except that I do notice certain times when the computer seems slower. I'm in the Aiea area, but don't know if that makes any difference. Maybe lots of users around here.
What I have not liked about RR is having to call and talk to any sort of tech guys. I once was on the phone for about 3 hours with various techs (including mainland techs) and one got rather snitty with me. He was really rather rude and impatient and I should have hung up on him.
Other than that, not too many problems.

So I take it you have at least 2 email addresses, maybe a third. One from the Bizwind, one from the dial up and maybe a third from DSL service from Verizon?

as an example and a test, i just went to the blues podcasting site at http://www.roadhousepodcast.com/ and downloaded roadhouse_031.mp3 which is about 41.5 MB; i had a consistent download speed of 400 KB/sec and so downloaded the entire file in about a minute.
I just timed that download, and it looks like it took me 4:25 to download that same file at about 157 KB/sec (but then again, I have 2 other computers on the same network as me on the moment). Maybe I'll kick everyone off the network and try again later.

I use hotmail and yahoo email accounts. Last night my man explained to me, as best he understand this situation.....about all these charges we pay. He uses gte.net email account. They told him on the phone (when Verizon took over GTE) that to keep that email address he has to keep paying that $19.95 a month. He did not want to change his email address (for reasons unknown to me) so he keeps paying for this dial up, which we cannot even access since we have DSL. When we got DSL it was in 2000. It was GTE then. That is why we have Bizwind, which I guess is called an ISP....and GTE said we had to get an ISP... and then when Verizon took over from GTE we did not change it because they told us that it would take several weeks to change over. None of it makes any sense at all to me. I did not even know that Bizwind or Verizon offers email accounts.
Is Road Runner the only other option we have if we decide to get rid of the land line ? I am really stewing over this and need to make a decision soon. I am so ignorant of computers. I read threads and wonder what they are talking about ! I do not even know enough to ask an intelligent question. I am doing good to be able to set the time on my 1989 clock radio.

I contacted him private message the first day he posted that he will help people. I got his cell # and he has my man's cell #. If I need him, which I am pretty sure I will....I going call him up. So, I can get rid of the land line here and go on from that point I guess.....in a few days. Still undecided about what internet connection we will get. Maybe we will keep the phone. I am lucky to know what year it is, actually..... :D With all the shuffling around I have been doing. I go looking for stuff and realize it's at the new place already. Kind of fun actually, never a dull moment.
Thank you so much for offering to let me use your computer ! I may take you up on that ! I would not really need to do that, unless we are without service for over a month. If it comes to that, I would have already had internet withdrawals and offed myself. Just kidding....am finding some humor today. I do have a serious internet addition though.

just to make sure you know, there are a LOT of things that you can get for free. for example, if you want an email account, you have LOTS of choices: yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc. they're all free with lots of fantastic features. antivirus programs? free. spyware programs? free. web browsers? free. word processing programs? free. etc. many businesses will not tell you this so whether it's doc or someone else, be sure to get some good advice and don't think that you have to pay for everything. you've been paying way too much for much too long!

Well, there's other ways you can get the mainstream products for free also, but yes, you can get free alternatives for virtually anything.
Heck, if you can find an old computer (for free) then just load linux and install an office program, web browser, email program, AV, and if you like, some games.

I use hotmail, yahoo email, spybot, adaware and AVG anti virus. I am very happy with all of them. The price was right, free. The other thing that I find usefull is www.answersthatwork.com I use the task list thing on that site.
I insisted that we get the virus thing, Norton 2004 (I think that is what it is called). It cost around 80 bucks. I have never seen such a mess in my life. I fought with it for two weeks and decided to return it. Of course, the return policy was...you guessed it, two weeks. I went online and read reviews....*LOL* Never saw such cussing in my life ! At least I no longer felt alone.
Now is the time for me to tell you about my NetZero Free Internet. I saw it advertised and decided to try it. This was when we first got the computer in 2000. The thing wanted me to pick an address (?)...none in Hawaii at all. So, I made up a mainland address because I did not know what to do. Oh, I was so proud of myself when I got that all accomplished and it worked ! That is, until the phone bill came. It was over $500.00 and yes we paid it !! Yup, every time I went online it was dialing from some far away place and we paid for long distance dial up. I am telling you all this so you can have a good laugh !! I was not laughing then, needless to say but now it is kind of funny.

I have RR and getting customer support on the line hasn't been a problem. I've always gotten to a live person. I've had to call more recently since I got a new cable modem. Everytime the cable goes out the Internet feed dies. I usually call it in so they know that area is having problems. That gets it prioritized so they can dispatch someone to the scene faster.

This may be slightly off-topic, but when Verizon was the DSL provider there was an instruction in autoexec.bat that would call up the Verizon Support Center login at machine startup. I've still got that; I click the "x" box to get rid of it, but I'm wondering if any former Verizon DSL users have just deleted the Verizon programs (through "add/remove") and had any unexpected results.
Can it be done safely without screwing up things? It's more a nuisance than anything else, but I'm all for eliminating nuisances if it can be done without harm.

Well it is moving day. Don't know if we will get it all moved today, but am hoping so.
Have decided to give Road Runner a try. If I do not like it, I can change later cause they do not lock customers into a long contract. They have a 30 money back guarantee, too.
Did you all know that Oceanic now offers phone service ? I did not know that until I had a long phone discussion with them yesterday. The cheapest rate they have for phone service is $39.95 a month.
They have a promption going on now....Cable TV (standard cable with 75 channels and digital with 45 channels) and Road Runner for $91.95 a month for one year..then the rates go to $111.70. Sounds like a deal to me.
Where we live now, the basic cable TV is free. Where we are moving to it will cost us $46.80 a month...IF I have the information correct.
Today I have to call and make an appointment for the Oceanic technician to come to our new place and turn on the cable tv. After that, I have to go pick up the self install kit for Road Runner. I do not know when it will be ready for my internet connection.....doc1456 if you are reading this, I will probably be calling you when ever I can get the thing ready. It could be a wekk or two ? Not sure. Bring a hammer to hit my keyboard so you do not hurt you hand. :D
I am probably going to turn off the DSL connection I have here in a few days. It depends on if we get all our stuff moved out of here today or not.

And in some cases, RoadRunner users have it worse than customers of other providers that use different upstream links:
ISP battle leaves thousands with reduced Net use (http://www.techworld.com/opsys/news/index.cfm?NewsID=4531)
A dispute between two of the Internet's biggest service providers has exploded into the public arena after a large number of business and consumer customers saw their Net use curtailed. The first customers knew of the dispute was on Wednesday morning, when ISP Level 3 terminated its peering agreement with Cogent. The loss of this direct link meant that a portion of each network's users could not contact anything hosted on the other network, including websites, other types of servers and e-mail addresses. Among others, the Level 3 decision affected users of Road Runner, the US cable broadband service run by Time Warner.

It appears the the latency problems have been resolved.
But someone from HT is going to give me a call hopefully. I'm
going to complain about the poor peering arrangements Sprint
has.

I ordered Oceanic TV Cable and Road Runner service yesterday. They said that the technician will come to my house on Thursday to hook me up. They said I can get a second line for the computer and they will bring the modem for Road Runner and hook that up too......and the whole installation deal will cost $28.00. I asked her three times to make sure I understand, *LOL* Yup, whole thing for $28.00.
At least they do not have me locked into a year long contract like we had to have with the DSL. With Road Runner there is a 30 money back guarantee.

I hope you talked to your neighbors to see who has RR, because during peak times, it will slow to dial up speeds (trust me, friends told me that a million times).

The upside and downside is DSL is the whole "install it yourself" deal. I prefer that, but for those who understandably expect things to just work, it's ridiculous to just send 'em the modem in the box and say, "Good luck!" Installation for $28? Sheesh. Was I imagining this, or when RoadRunner first came out, didn't it cost over $50? And $50 was the discounted installation price?
Viva la competition!
On the mainland, RoadRunner users were one of the key innocent victims of the whole Level 3/Cogent peering spat. Is that the case here? Or are Hawaii's top tier providers a different mix?

Was not able to talk to neighbors...we do not live there yet. :D Have just been in and out moving boxes of stuff. Right now I will have to make do with what ever it turns out to be. If it turns out to be junk I will change it over to some thing else. It does come with a 30 day money back guarantee, in writing on their web site.
Thanks for your concern, I appreciate.

That DSL installation crap and the charges we paid for about five years is the reason I wanted to get away from DSL. The "install it yourself DSL" is for people who know what they are doing. That does not include me. It was an unending night mare.....they pulled the thing on us, that 1stwahine is going through right now.....the told us our modem would be here on a certain day....it did not show up. We called...they said it had been shipped. (they lied)....we waited...we called.....and on and on and on.....I felt tell them to go CENSORED them selves and just get dial-up internet back, with any one but them. It went on for over two weeks, it may have been even longer, I cannot remember exactly how long it was. It was a mess.....trying to call them on the phone, waiting on hold for over an hour each time we had to call.....between them and Bizwind, passing the buck, each one blaming the other because our DSL did not work....The good thing I have to say is that as of next monday our DSL and dial-up crap will be disconnected ! Good riddance to it.
Yeah, I was amazed when they said they would install the tv cable (what ever they do there ?) There is a cable outlet in there already, and it does work.....install one more line, bring the Road Runner modem, install that and also hook up the computer all for $28.00. They even quoted me exactly what the amount of the first bill will be, and so on. I wrote it all down, and have the name of the person I spoke with written down too and you can believe I will be checking out the bills every month. I will never again get screwed over like we did with the DSL crap. If I cannot understand the bill I will get some one that does understand it ! Ha !!

Dear
Thank you for your email.
I checked with our Network Operations team and they shared they are having discussions with Sprint to verify if the number of hops can be reduced. We are also considering some local peering points for our network. Mr. Stene, both of these items will take some time to work through.
We appreciate your patience. We will continue to enhance and refine our network. You are a valued customer.
Sincerely,

Wait, you only have one monitor, mouse and keyboard. Unless you have more that I don't know about, then you can't have 2 computers running with one monitor/keyboard/mouse. Plus, you'll need a router ($70 at compusa), and cabling.

Auntie, all you really need is the computer you're using right now connected to the Internet. Use the brand new Verizon DSL modem and keep the modem I sent you as a spare, and use your other computer as a spare backup computer in case something goes hamajang with this one.

Oh, and start on learning some stretches or have something to pull you away from your computer every few hours, because once you have DSL, you won't stop surfing the internet (sure, you only surf hawaiithreads.com and your blog, but soon you'll find videos and pictures of lost friends, soon you'll run out of space on your computer, then I'll need to install a larger drive, soon you'll be spending your money on some antiques found on ebay.... just be prepared of losing some sleep.)

Everyday has been one thing or another using DSL! Yes, the speed is fast when I can use it. Problems are computer freezes, unknown Hard Error, Beginning dump of Pysical Memory, and other things I never had before!
Luckily, I have Dial-up connection so I don't have to be without connection to the internet. It's a see saw game of DSL and Dial-up everyday. HawanTel has issued me a one month Free Service Charge.
I will be calling them again tomarrow and ask what's the problem. My son-inlaw told me to switch to Oceanic. No problems. I should have, could have but didn't.

I browsed through the whole thread. As far as slowdowns, are you guys using wireless connections? Just wondering because some folks don't lock down their wireless and the neighbors may be leeching off your connection.
Anyways, I got Verizon DSL last month. Its pretty good. I'll probably keep it.
I did set up everything myself and skipped the installation disk. I have an Ethernet cable connection for the primary computer and wireless for additional computers.
The only problem I do experience is that, if I leave the computer idle for long periods of time, I need to restart or log back in to reset it. If not then the connection is flakey. Sometimes I can renew my connection through the routers web interface but it doesn't always work.

Hawaiian Telcom was having problems with latency when they transitioned
backbones recently. Hence the speed issues. I cannot speak for anyone else
but I don't believe it was due someone using a wireless router.
In regards to your situation, it sounds like your router is flaky . I can leave
my computer connected for hours through my router and DSL modem with
no drop offs.

LOL !! I am trying to read all these answers and still undecided what to do.
Just remember that with DSL you have your own line and with Road Runner you share with many others. Depending on your area, your computer will slow down and speed up according to how many people are on at the same time. Also, if you have sensitive information on your computer, just remember that because you are sharing the same line with so many others, it will be much easier to hack into your computer and steal information.

Not necessarily true, as far I understand between you and the CMTS {headend}
is encrypted.Yes in the past you were able to see your neighbors files, but not
now.
