View Full Version : What pisses you off? - Chapter 4

This doesn't really "piss" me off. It simply irks me.

I dislike it when a business entity, such as Sprint or Cingular, shows a map of the 48 contiguous states without (what I feel should be required) insets of Hawai'i and Alaska, in their advertisments. Then they go on to tout their "nationwide" cellular coverage. Come on! They want to tell me about their abilty to service my cellular needs, yet they can't even get the complete map of the USA correct?

I know. It's a mea iki. But if a company is going to use a map of the USA in their ads and boast of nationwide coverage, they ought to make sure that they aren't forgetting two integral parts of the nation it does business in.

surfingfarmboy:

Like you said, even though it is only mea iki,

I think that if you are bothered by it,
you still have every right to be irked & be pissed off.

I guess Sprint & Cingular don't know their map very well. ;) :p

In life's big picture this hardly registers on the Richter Scale of piss offs but it's a piss off nonetheless...I spend a lot of time posting informational web pages pertaining to various casting projects so that actors and models are armed with knowledge. Before they can book an appointment for an audition they MUST read that web page. Without exception on every job, talent will call me directly, instead of their agents, and ask me questions that are already answered! They have yet to ask a unique question! Go figure! I wish I had a nickle for every time I said, "It's on the web page."!

At the high end of that Richter Scale...Stage mothers (or fathers). I was informed of one mom slapping her child around and calling her names outside my office building because the 8 year old didn't want to audition. 'Nuff said...grrrrrrrr...

Had I witnessed it, I woulda called the cops. I mean, it's not like a silly audition for a silly commercial is monumentally significant to a child's life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, health or welfare. There'd better not be a next time, but if there is, I'll call you, Auntie, and we'll take turns at the Whack Whacks while awaiting the police, 'kay? I'm not far from Chinatown!

Speaking of spaces...

How about selfish drivers, or overly coutious drivers.

You are looking for a place to park (for the longest time),
then all of a sudden, you see someone's car double parked
(or using 2 parking stall instead of one)!.

Man, if that person wasn't double parked for some reasons or another,
you could go in there yourself to park your own car.

I figure, they shouldn't even be driving their brand new car out like that on a busy day,
just to double park so that they wouldn't get their poor car all scratch up.

How about another one...

Your friend(s) calls you up wanting to get together with you to make plans....

Later the date rolls around, makes an excuse to say that he/she doesn't have money!. or worse yet, keeps doing that to you all the time, to a point of you having never to have a get together with that friend, because that kind of a friend is nothing but a free loader!.

What I would like to know is....

Why we even have that type of people around, any way?!.

Why can't they wake up & smell the coffee,
that he/she would really have to actually pay his/her way!.

Sorry Golf lingo isnt "Par for the course" around here ................ :D Maybe I should have just "layed up" and "chipped on" for an easy "birdie" or at the very most "par". But then again what have you got lose when your laying "dormie" 3 with 3 to go? You go for the "green" in two and get the "eagle" to finish the "match" with the "clubhouse lead"! Then again after that lousy "putting" I had that day I guess I can just call it the "rub of the green". However I did sink a 35 foot "double breaker" on the 8th to get "up and down" and save "par" to keep the match "all square" . That kind of made up for having a less then stellar performance on the "links" :D

I won't bore you with all the details, but I discovered that some got their hands on one of my Visual C++ programs that I turned in for a college class, and took the credit of writing the code themselves. They made one mistake....Usually you start out with comments in the program to let the professor know some basic information about the program and the author. Well you guessed it this individual forgot to change my name in the comments section...OOPS.... I am presenting my case to the dean, so I will let everyone know what happens.

What pisses me off (or irks me)...

--Certain unnamed professors from UH who have been here for a couple years and have yet managed to not learn any people skills during that time.

--People who blatantly drive through red lights.

--People who block driveways and don't show "aloha" when it's rush hour.

--People who have to be better than everyone else around them.

Here is one...

This shouldn't be hard to figure out...

Take 2 people jay walking for instance,

One lives here on Oahu...

And another one is just visiting (who knows from where).

Here comes an officer....

Guess which one he'll/she'll most likely give the ticket to for jay walking?

Definately not the visitor....

Why?

Well...

I deduce that, is...

The visitor doesn't live here, has a plane to catch sooner or later, probably wont beable to comeback for the ticket that was given to him/her, & most of all, they want the visitor(s) to keep coming back, that's why they are not given the tickets for it!.

So...

Stop jay walking, so that you wont be given given a ticket for it. It's too darn expensive!.

Just stay in the cross walk, so what ever happens,
you'll most likely be in the right (of the law). ;)

I hate it when cabbies milk the meter AND YOU'RE A KAMAAINA WHO KNOWS how to get home via faster routes!

Once a cabbie tried milking the taxi meter by driving way too slow and taking the LONGGGGGGGG route when I needed to get to Goodyear Tires on Waialae Avenue from Ward Warehouse. I told him that all I have is a $20 so if he wants a nice tip he'd better find the shortcuts reallly fast.

I never knew you could cut thru parking lots in Kakaako and go diagonally from Ward and Ala Moana to Atkinson and Kapiolani! I was impressed! He managed to get an $8 tip and I was able to pick up my car and get back to work all within my lunch hour. :D

i recently had a similar experience, so i feel your pain, man...i had just finished a gig in waikiki and flagged one of those cheapo guys stalking barflies on lewers...i told him exactly where i had to go and how i wanted to get there (i was going downtown, and wanted him to take ala moana blvd to alakea)...he ended up ignoring me and when i called him on it, he flew into a vietnamese rage...he screamed me to get out or he'd call the cops and i told him that i was already calling them on my cell...he slammed on the brakes and tried to be menacing, but i laughed and told him i had his license number...he sped off like a bat out of hell...i'm glad i only had my guitar on me, or he'd have made of with the rest of my gear if i had put it in the trunk...

There's a lot of things that piss me off including paying more taxes, people who cut me off while I am driving, spam email, telemarketing calls, junk faxes... among others.

Currently I am getting these mailings from sports betting magazines that I never subscribed to. Several of them. I don't gamble, rarely watch professional or college sports on TV. How in hell did I end up on the mailing list? Everytime I get one of these pesky little magz, I rip off the mailing label and toss the publication straight to the trash.

Is there a way for me to get off these mailing lists without actually having to contact the publishers (for fear of being put on another mailing list). These mailings have been occuring now for 2 years, always at the start and during most of the football season.

Go to this link for the Direct Mail Association (http://www.dmaconsumers.org/consumerassistance.html) and sign up to be removed from direct mailings and eblasts. I'm assuming you've already registered your phone number on the "Do Not Call" list, too.

There's no guarantee that all that direct mail and spam will stop completely because there are no laws prohibiting businesses from advertising that way. However, as a trade association, the DMA does have some clout with its members, so you might see some reduction in the junk mail you receive in your mailbox and on your computer.

Serenity, while I despise spam email of all types, I already have that under control. I have DSL through LavaNet and one of the best things LavaNet ever did for me was set up procmail and a white list for my primary email address, which I was using long before they implemented the more user friendly spam safeguards they now have in place. So I am happy with that and get no spam at my lavanet mailbox.

I also have created several other email domains and mailboxes on several servers to keep myself free of spam in most cases. And when one box gets to be troublesome, I just delete it... easy to do if you have your own domain.

For my public address, I just use yahoo.com since it is web based and no spam ever gets downloaded to my computer like the POP accounts I have. Ditto for my gmail account. I only use that as web based. Both offer POP and IMAP, but I don't need it.

My big gripe for this thread at this time is the junk gambling magazines that I get in regular email. I think Ms. Miulang offered a link to the DMA which I will check on later. I am already on the National Do Not Call list, but still get some junk phone calls.

because admin. is messing with with me again, & doing what ever with my own post, when I was not the one who infact divided it in the first place!. I'm sorry you're upset, Serenity. I'm not sure I understand specifically what you're referring to. If you decide to return to HawaiiThreads.com, feel free to send me a Private Message with your concerns.

FWIW, if you're referring to the splitting of threads (i.e. making a "Chapter 4" for this long-running topic), this is done regularly and fairly arbitrarily. It is true that some responses will be separated from the post they're related to, but hopefully people understand that if it's not in "Chapter 4," it's in "Chapter 3."

If you're referring to the combining of multiple posts, this is done on occasion when users post several subsequent posts to a single thread, for example responding separately to individual points in previous posts, when a single post summarizing all replies would have sufficed. This is just housekeeping, and of course your words aren't changed.

Further questions and comments about how this site is run are welcome at the Front Desk (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/forumdisplay.php?f=26). We now return this thread to its normal laundry list of pet peeves!

I really don't like how this forum has become anti-haole and anti-christian. I am a local, haole, christian So much blaming goes on here that is misplaced. People complain about sacrilegious actions towards religious icons they care about while using sacrilegious wording towards other religious icons they don't. I am a hard working, caring, sharing and tax paying individual. I'm not getting or asking for any public programs to help me, but my contributions over the years have helped many. I'm burnt out on starting positive threads and having some people not contribute to it other than snide comments or outright negative ones. I have now fallen into that mode with a recent post and don't want continue. So live aloha...

I really don't like how this forum has become anti-haole and anti-christian.

I have to say that I respectfully disagree with a generalization like this. Yes, I have seen some anti-haole and anti-Christian postings, some very nasty ones, even - and very often, the posters themselves are taken to task for their attitudes (some have even had their accounts closed after they made abusive farewells.) But for the most part, HT seems to me to be populated by intelligent and opinionated people, both from the Islands and away - people who are thoughtful, creative, tolerant, and fascinating.

Even if I don't subscribe to the same attitudes as some of the posters (and a good thing, too - HT would be BORING if everyone thought and felt the exact same ways I do), I am pleased to see the overall level of discussion that occurs here. I've recently seen (by exploring other threads) that some posters whose attitudes I didn't like, turned out to be witty, erudite and interesting people - we just view the world through different lenses sometimes.

Perhaps, MM, you should explore other threads - check out what people have to say on a wider range of topics. Perhaps you've only been exploring some of the more controversial or fiery threads. Accept that people in an open forum will disagree with you sometimes, but rejoice in the freedom we have to do just that. And keep posting!

Yeah I got that the other day when I tried to call road runner. I hung up before the recording finished. Then I read on another forum that some one was on hold for three hours.....cannot imagine waiting that long. I would have hung up.

This morning I called HECO. They made me mad too...their recording says some thing about how all the people are busy and to call back later, and then it hangs up on you. I did get through to them later and they were very courteous on the phone.

I have not tried to call Hawaiian Telecom yet, but I would bet ten bucks they are experiencing "high call volumes" also. I think I am going to write a bunch of letters and to hell with the phone calls. I am tired of being mad on the phone.

"This call may be monitored" is another recording that makes me mad. Maybe I should tell them the same thing and turn on my tape recorder and monitor them.

Or as those huge companies with multiple call centers and agents who are paid to just basically answer one call after another (they get "compensated" on their ability to answer a lot of calls) and pass a problem on to someone else would say, "WHAT customer service???? ROFLMAO". The people who are answering the phones are not paid as much as they should be to put up with the misplaced abuse they sometimes get from irate customers. That is another one of those jobs that you couldn't get to me to take even if it paid a million dollars. I don't need the kind of abuse that call center agents are subjected to. There are lots of call center agents who would LIKE to give better customer service, but their companies aren't compensating them on how "nice" they are or how well they handle the caller's problems/questions. Most large companies only care about how many calls get answered.

Now I know why programmers stay up all night to finish their programs.

I'm trying to finish an assignment (the first time I didn't turn it in early) and the IF statements are driving me crazy!!

IF work = "hard" then
'take break
computerchair = "empty"
else
hair = "ripped out from head"
end if

(actually, typing that felt good. Now I'm relaxed.)

I hate when people talk crap about what they have no idea about. When people are afraid to LEAD. I was born and raised here in Hawaii. I love it!! People here NEED to travel and see what OUR WORLD has to offer. OPEN YOUR MIND AND YOUR HEARTS. We live in a place that almost EVERYONE in the world DREAMS of coming to. When they get here all most of us think is "GO HOME" Guess what???? That is OUR bread and butter!! grow up, meeet new people and enjoy the new friends that will enrich your lives!!!!

People who steal my (or any other farmer's) crops.

Looks like I lost about 100 good-sized pumpkins from a few of the acres I planted pumpkin on last night. Yeah..they knew what they were doing..stole them just at the perfect time, i.e., harvest time. Pumpkin isn't a major crop for me..I mostly plant it for the keiki around here to pick one out this time of year, for Halloween. It's just so damned grating to me.

I went through all this nonsense in Ka'u, especially with the citrus crop. No matter where I go, it gets me all huhu, cause I know it's people who know when a crop is ripe for the picking..other farmers or people who know something about a given crop that your average non-farmer wouldn't know..who are stabbing me in the back.

Nope.

"comfortable" is correctly pronounced "kumf' ter bul" (can't put in the upside-down "e" in certain places, so excuse my bumbling way of explaining this ...)

It also is correct to pronounce it in the more stilted manner, "kum'-fer-te-bel" (again with the upside-down "e" in places). But it's not more correct to pronounce it this way than the other just because this way sounds more formal.

carry on ... you will be tested later ...

Funny how you make these "mainlander" comparisons every time the offender is someone living HERE, in Hawaii.

There is an awful lot of rude behavior on the roads right here, and they're not "mainlanders." They're people who live right here.

So, by definition, it's not mainland style. It's Hawaii style. Such a shame, yes, but it's the truth. I'm know it wasn't always like this, just like it wasn't always "like this" on the mainland. But it is now, and we have to stop blaming "mainlanders" for our own bad behavior. It's a cheap shot and a cop-out.

Oh glad you asked.

The aggravation of the day is this Bissell Proheat Clearview 1699 Carpet Shampoo Machine. To make a long story short, it has died and tonight I plan to give it a wonderful funeral in the bottom of the dumpster. No more $100.00 trips to the repair shop. Once was more than enough. Celebrating it's death !!! Ha ha ha ~!

I am having problems with electrical appliances.

My coffee maker tried to die. It does work, it you just plug it in and do not use the on/off switch.

Last week when I tried to clean the oven it shot sparks out at me. No, I did not have enough sense to just throw the breaker switch OFF.

One of my vacuums works ok, since a member here rescued me by telling me that it needs a belt...which I replaced over last weekend.

The other vacuum is a hunk of junk from Sear's that lost it's suction right about the time the extended warranty expired. Amazing isn't it ?

Do I dare clean the refrigerator ?

Takes the clothes dryer 90 minutes to dry a small load of jeans.

My new fan is dying too I think.

So, I have a vacuum that does not suck and a fan that does not blow. Heh heh heh.

Today was my Progamming final, and I couldn't get the results to display in the program! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v81/adri1456/smilies/awcrap.gif I had a 30 minute head start from everyone else because I came in early, but looks like my brain was sleeping. I think I passed the class with a low B (I've been getting perfects throughout the quarter, but suddenly my brain went skiing on Mauna Kea or something).

I spent a couple of hours on the program this afternoon, and I finished what I could dig up from the code I got, and modified it to work easier. I'll try to see if I can reproduce what the paper said, then hopefully learn from my mistakes.

I think I need coffee, but I'm afraid I might shrink to below 5ft.

I haven't dreamed in programming yet (which I thought was a joke), but self learning won't be for me anytime soon, because the book is useless in codes you can use, and the internet isn't helping either (I thought there isn't anything the internet can cure). Now Networking, that'll give me nightmares (atleast not the LAN stuff, but the corperate networks and subnet mask *cringes*)

... when I need to take care of older dimentia people, and they do crazy things.

One of our clients just walked outside to the Ice Cream truck in her pajamas, and I had to chase after her (with no cell phone, because I was going to ask my Mom [who I thought was watching them] something). She asked for 5 cones, and I told the person in the truck to don't take that order, then proceeded to take her back home, but she makes a scene pulling my hand and I let go to stop from waking up the neighborhood. She got her wish, but SHE ORDERED 5 CONES! I somehow helped her carry those back to the house, and she gave one to everyone. My Mom just came out of the bathroom and she's furious as I am.
She just told me that she gave her yogurt for a snack before she went upstairs, but the client thinks she's thin (she's apparently regaining the fat she lost).

My father-in-law had Alzheimers. Just had to go with the flow no matter how nuts his actions might seem at the time. I looked at it this way: to him, it all makes perfect sense so there's no arguing about it.

I noticed his long-term memory seemed to be intact so If I had to spend time with him, I'd chat with him about stuff that happened way back when. And I'd listen carefully and ask him for details. Was interesting.

One day he was telling me about living at Damon Track, where the airport is now. Then he started telling me about "S" street (streets had letters in that area). "You know where 'S' street is?" He asked.

I told him, "That's where the "S" car goes, right?" (Escargo, as in snails).

He smiled. I beat him to the punchline. And it wasn't one of the jokes he'd ever told before, either.

It was among the last lucid moments he had in what was becoming an increasingly clouded mind.

Liver cancer took him before Alzheimers could demolish what was left. It was a sad blessing, the lesser of two evils.

Hi Auntie Lynn,

First of all, BIG HUGS to you! I had to smile and chuckle when reading your post because I FEEL for you! Having to deal with customer service people for any kind of technology bugs me and agitates me to no end. The people who have to do that for a living....I pity them!

I always think I'm going to maintain my composure when calling customer service and then lose it in a matter of minutes. Scenario follows...

Me: Hello, yes, I'd like to check on my order, which I placed over the phone back on Sept. 24th.
Them: Okay, can I have your cell phone number, blah blah blah, your order number, etc. etc. etc.
Me: Yup, here it is...123456.
Them: Hmmm. Can you hold?
Me: Sure, ok.
Them: Ma'am, we can't seem to find that order number.
Me: Whaddya mean? I just looked it up online, on the Cingular website, and the number is right there.
Them: It was a web order?
Me: No, it was a phone order.
Them: I'm sorry, we can't seem to help you. There is no order by that number.
Me: How on earth can I see the order number under MY account on YOUR website and YOU can't seem to find it on YOUR computer? And by the way, how is it that I change my plan and order a phone a few hours before my husband (who orders the exact same thing) and he gets his in 3 days and I'm told MINE IS ON BACKORDER?????
Them: I'm sorry ma'am, can you hold?
Me: Can I PLEASE talk to someone else? Isn't there a supervisor or something?
Them: (Put me on hold forever)
Me: (I hung up and called again)

I hope everything gets fixed real soon!

"a day or two late." countcher blessings.
imagine being stiffed by about a thousand.
As mentioned previously, this overseas production company 'stole' about fifteen hundred from me for services rendered.

a rapper that had a movie come out a while ago, had a scene in a 'tiki bar' wherein i sold them about 800 bux worth of tropical props. This major studio never paid for it. and i mean never. not late, just never. after repeated attempts to collect. rhymes with former smothers.

a major rock video channel bounced a very large check (about $1,300.00) for props and decor i sent them years ago. took a long time to get remuneration. This kind of thing hurts a small businessperson greatly. set me back and messed up other business and bank relations. be very happy you get yer checks within a week or at all.

thankfully, these are exceptions to the rule, as for the many years working with, to, at, and for the film industry in Burbank and L.A., Mostly i have worked with great people with longrunning back and forth business. and this on every level and every aspect of the industry; directors, producers, prop houses. actors. music publishers, agents. managers. you name it. I will not make a negative blanket statement, cuz it ain't true. But the few do damage for the many, sometimes.

...the non-existance of bookstores in Hawaii. I know that Barnes and Noble will open at Ala Moana soon, but Waldens/borders at Ala Moana is closed, same goes for borders Pearlridge (but they're opening a bigger store next year)...
Hey, Doc!
You don't have to wait that long for Borders at Pearlridge. Read here:
Borders to open Pearlridge store (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2005/Oct/08/bz/FP510080309.html )
I'm excited about this Thursday's opening. I drive by it every day going to and coming home from work. They even have their Borders signs all lit up.

I wasn't aware of Barnes and Noble opening at Ala Moana...where will that be?

Ironically, the locations of the two competing bookstores will be in the old spaces of the same store in the two centers: they're both where JC Penney used to be.

How ironic, indeed!

Speaking of JC Penney, that pisses me off that they closed up so many of their stores. Now I have to either mail order or shop when in Vegas. :(

After spending countless hours working on my brochure, profreeding and redesigning the document. I go and print it at Kinkos and take it home, then while I was folding it I read it, and I found a few misspellings! But its no biggie, because the clerk did print it for free, but she gave me 4 copies instead of the intended 3.

I just hate pau hana traffic. First off, the bus arrives 45 minutes late (taking a 4:30 bus), the there was traffic in the Aiea area, where I got off to stop by Pearlridge, then caught the bus that was behind the first bus I caught (and if it wasn't for the bridge, I could have caught the bus I got off) and it took another 45 minutes to reach home (at 6pm).

It pisses me off when people have preachy, hypocritical messages on their cars.

Like "Support Our Troops" on a ridiculously oversized, manhood-enhancing, gas-guzzling Ford Excursion whose driver apparently hasn't make the connection between his self-centered idiocy and the deaths of 2,000 young Americans. I swear to God, someone get me a high-powered rifle, and I'll sit on an overpass and ... Did I say that out loud?

On the way to work today, a car in front and to the right of me had that annoying "Slow Down, This Ain't The Mainland" bumper sticker. As I passed the car on the left, I saw that the young female driver had a cell phone plastered to her ear and was paying NO attention to anything going on around her. I felt like yelling, "Stop yapping -- this ain't the office!" but she had her window rolled up. Oh, to be young and oblivious.

what pisses me off here, is what perplexes me as much;
HOW to do some restaurants function and stay alive anyway?!

So we go to Palomino's for a birthday celebration. upon entering, a gaggle of young girls mill about at the entrance. it is up to us to introduce ourselves and request our reserved table.
The waiter, though conciliatory, continually returns to our table and tells us they ran out of this, ran out of that, AFTER we order it.
(I managed and worked in many restaurants thru the decades and we always had an open rapport with the barstaff and kitchen help; WHAT is on the 86 list? and IF and when something is no more, TELL us then and there.

The birthday girl had a plate of cold fish and rice delivered to her. Reprehensible. The birthday girl receiving cold food? the waiter brings another plate. the Fish is hot, but the rice, again, is cold. I have Lobster ravioli. and two beers with dinner. i wanted hefeweisen, but after ordering it, and waiting a while, was told, "we ran out of it". I am quite thirsty by this time, Woulda drank any beer. Why didn't he bring me ANY beer to just sip on while he explained the one i wanted was no more?!
i then choose another beer, he goes away. returns a little while later, again. empty handed. "We ran out of that too, sir."

OOoooookkkkaaaayyyy. What DO you have? he sez what. so i order that.

later, during dinner, and after an amount of time that they could have made more money on me by serving me at least another beer or two, when and IF anyone noticed my glass was near empty, I requested an anchor steam, please. about ten minutes go by. I get up to find him to, again, request my beer. and also request a creme brulee for the birthday gal, who i have pointed out discretely and described then, as well as once before. (when the creme brullee arrives, the person comes up and sez: "OK, who is the birthday girl?" while swinging the dish about...

about 2 thirds of the way through the dindin that i am enjoying ... yumm,,, creamy lobster ravioli, I need to visit "the room". I return a minute later and see my plate gone. No one asked me nor anyone else at table if they can take away a plate of about half eaten lobster dinner. Not only that, all other plates and stuff was cleared except the birthday gal's dinner, which of course, she was still enjoying at whatever leasure pace she is entitled to. I would be eating also, too, so as to not make her feel conspicuous or rushed, but that would not be my fate; I am as Oliver; my food taken away arbitrarily, tho' we would be charged the full rate.

add insult to injury, I am still hungry. I don't wanna stop eating yet, and it is dismaying and a little bit of a shock to see yer lobster gone. vanished before you are done. for no reason, at no one's behest. ... I purposefully held back from eating most of the day with the intent of reaaallly enjoying my meal with family and friends. just to have it scooped away from me unceremoniously while I am not looking?!
da hell kinda place was that anyway?!

We have this good bread with dinner, but no butter is served. i must request it. Bread is cold. I ask a passing hostess or waitress and ask; "eh you guys ever serve your bread heated?"
"No we never do...."
is the reply.

I ask for another thing of bread when the basket empties. Now, it is heated. what daaaa?! Why could we not have ... ahhh fergeddit.

Upon leaving, i ask one of the bimbos, I mean young ladies at the hostess stand where the manager is. i would like to talk with the manager.
She gestures in the general direction of the bar. i walk a few steps that way, looking at her. "WHERE is the manager!?"
still, she waves her hand in that area. I see a bar fulla people. What exactly DOES she expect me to do? Go up to each and ask, "please kind sir, are yoooo the manager?!"

three times i request she show me who the manager is., Even tho she should ascertain I am a customer who requires an intro to the manager, personally, then and there; she appears to be doing nothing more than drying her fingernail polish.

Finally she points him out. he is busy talking with waitstaff or bartenders about football or something. I tell him I just had a 20 dollar plate of lobster served me and almost half of it yanked away from me. he sez; "well, i can have some made for you and you can eat it at home". nice gesture, but too little too late. I say that is not the point; I wanted to dine with my dinner companions. the well has been poisoned already. i say this just in the remote chance you may be interested in preventing this in future.
(now, most any restaurant manager back in the day of good service would have assertively handled this by possibly deducting something from the check. But no such gesture was forthcoming. Nor an invite for a free drink or appetizer next time we came; just; "have some take home!"

I say:
Oh and another thing; in many upscale restaurants it sometimes is customary to not have the table completely cleared while one person finishes their dinner all alone. This is uncomfortable.
he sez; "well, its our policy to do that; to clear all the plates regardless, but we always ask if the person wants their plate taken away." I then respond with the first and only thing that would instantly come to any thinking person's mind;
"well, that certainly wasn't your policy the moment MY dinner was taken from me..."

Service. "good service" where did it go to?

And all you aloha spirit filled readers out there in HT land, don't bother responding with:
"well I dated a waitress and she came home every nite bitching about how everyone she serves is a spoiled demanding whiner"
or
"well, you should be more pleasant"
or
"You should lower your expectations"
or
"I dated a couple of waitreses who cried to me that it's a hard job and hate it when customers come in expecting happy happy server and stupid customers that think they are too important to be inconvenienced and that pisses me off"

as before, this whole diatribe presupposes that we, all there, tonight, were the epitome of congeniality. But the message is; the way we were treated was not commensurate with the supposed level of cuisine, supposed stature or reputation of the restaurant and the definite level of the bill.

I've been to palomino a few times and never had it that bad. But I would be just as outraged as you at the service and especially the manager's attitude. But the manager's attitude tells you where it all comes from, eh?

Like Craig said, miniscule tip says it all.

I'd give them, like, a dollar for tip. One buck. Be sure to split it with the busboy and the bar, eh?!! Hahahah.

Of course, after a night like that, I won't be back. I went to a restaurant in 1978 where I experienced an evening like that. The restaurant is still around. But I have never set foot in it again.

My condolences.

Bummers, Kimo. In a restaurant of that quality we all expect and deserve better service. I've not had even mediocre service at Palomino's but law of averages says it's gotta happen to someone at sometime. Sorry to hear it was you. How 'bout pasting your post above into an email to the manager?

I'm on their mailing list, from which I got the following info:

My question is, why did the rest of the people at your table not say something to the waiter when he started to clear your plate? I don't mean to imply that the loss of your plate is their fault but it just seems like human nature to say something. Just curious, that's all!

kimo55
November 20th, 2005, 09:52 AM
This is a corporate chain; they con't care cuz they don't have to.
corporate policy is; don't spend money on help that does not need to be there; consequently, the waiter was late with all drinks, and too slow with after dinner coffee, cuz he had no assitance; busboys to help with incidentals...
He was overworked handling things other help should do.

Will try this email sue, but as most corporate chains, they want no incoming. No spam nor any feedback on what they may improve upon.
Except via html forms and fields. That addy would take it thru this conduit:
http://reply.whatcounts.com/bin/front

"why did the rest of the people at your table not say something to the waiter when he started to clear your plate? "

Whoever stole it, didn't "start to clear the plate" apparently.
The others at the table were talking animatedly as we all were that nite and did not notice the person whizz by and scoop the plate wikiwiki like.

"I don't mean to imply that the loss of your plate is their fault but it just seems like human nature to say something. Just curious, that's all!"
The part of human nature to enjoy each others company to the exclusion of attention to whatever else was going on, took over, esp. as we were in a quite celebratory mood then as we had drinks at home before and drinks there. So we were partying. celebrating a birthday.
We really didn't think he had to be sentinels after our own table.

We were hoping we didn't think we had to protect ourselves from ill-trained predatory servers. Who deliver the salad plate with their thumb stuck in the salad. and grab plates from us while we are dining, while at the same time, ask: "You still working on this?"

oh. and another thing that got me panties inabunch; when he asked us if we wanted coffee, many did; there were some that wanted decaffe and some wanted regular. ya know; "I'll have decaffe..." "I would like regular", that's how it goes after dindin, ya know... BUT!
he continually tried to press us to summarise;
"So! Thats TWO decaffe and THREE regular?!"

as if WE should figure out the order for him. i tellya; I am not in any mood or condition by that time of nite to help the waiter figure out, synthesize, re-word or consolidate any part of the order for his brain to carry back to the kitchen. I don't wanna get my mathematical mind functioning late at nite, no matter how small the quiz is. That is his job.

kimo55

law of averages says it's gotta happen to someone at sometime.

Don't know how often the law of averages didctates stuff li'dat will happen to others, there, but the waiter was not oblivious; he was continually apologizing for the place and for running outta stuff so often. We felt badly for him, t'aint his fault. ('cept he shoulda known what WAS 86'd beforehand, rather than make ME wait fer mah gawdayumed beer for half an hour, thengewvurrymush)

how often does the law of averages say a stack of plates will be dropped and come crashing to the floor, just three feet from seat of the birthday girl?

In response to the horrible/non-existent/lousy/lacking/lame service at Palamino's.....I got this to say.

I am always slow in my thinking when this kind of thing happens. While I was reading your post, it came to my mind that maybe telling them that you are a Mystery Shopper and get paid to write reviews on places of business. They probably could care less, but you never know yeah ?

I like the idea posted about writing things down on a clipboard and make like you going write it in the newspaper.

There are web sites where you can go post your consumer review about places. I don't have a link. Bet it is easy for find though.

aaaahhhhh yessss!
Yes, Palomino is owned by RUI. RUI also owns Zoopa, Palisade (very very yupscale restaurant with a view) and used to own Cinnabon. I think you should definitely complain about the treatment you got to the GM of Palomino Hawaii. All the times I've ever eaten at the flagship restaurant here in town, I've never had bad service. I think even though it is a "corporate" restaurant, they do have certain standards that need to be met throughout the chain, and if you feel those aren't being met because you had bad service, you need to let them know so they can correct the situation. If you had complained at the time of the incident, you might also have been given some comps, not that that would make up for the spoiled birthday dinner, but Palomino has a reputation to uphold and they certainly don't like to hear their guests air their displeasure with their friends...I mean, after all, you weren't dining at a McD, and for the prices you paid, you'd expect better service than what you got.

Like Craig said, miniscule tip says it all.

I'd give them, like, a dollar for tip. One buck. Be sure to split it with the busboy and the bar, eh?!! Hahahah.

Blaine

OK, I can't maintain my silence any longer.

The waiter was extremely apologetic about everything. He wasn't the problem. What is he supposed to do, stick his finger in everyone's dinner to make sure it's hot? That's a kitchen problem. Why blame the waiter?

They also gave us a nice bottle of pinor noir for half-price (half the menu price), by way of apology for things, which I certainly appreciated. So I saved $25 there. That amounts to more than a 10 percent discount off the bill.

I wish I had been paying attention when the busboy took the last third of Kimo's dinner. We were talking, goofing around and taking pictures, and I was turned away from his seat (since he wasn't there). Nobody saw his plate disappear. The manager did offer to give him replacement food. I would have taken it. He chose not to. <shrug>

The evening was not a total disaster. Yes, a few things went wrong, almost all of them related to which beers were available to the one person at the table drinking beer. And the bimbos at the front desk behaved badly. One of them should have taken Kimo over and introduced him to the manager, for God's sake. That's abominable. However, for the most part, everything was fine ... better than fine, in fact. My mom was happy with it; it was her 82nd birthday.

Leaving a penny as a tip in such a situation would be an extraordinarily classless, petty thing to do. I tipped properly, and I will go spend my money there again.

I've had worse experiences at many restaurants in Honolulu. If I refused to go to every restaurant I had a problem with, Oahu's economy would collapse. I make my dissatisfaction known and get on with my life.

I suppose we could have handled the situation this way. (http://www.dailycomet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051117/NEWS/511170326/1013)

"The waiter was extremely apologetic about everything."

yea. over and over. loudly.
my point; he shouldnta had to.

"What is he supposed to do, stick his finger in everyone's dinner to make sure it's hot?"

nope. finger sticking in food was another server's duty that nite at our table apparently.

"They also gave us a nice bottle of pinot noir for half-price (half the menu price), by way of apology for things, which I certainly appreciated. So I saved $25 there."

That was an apology at the beginning of it all, for the fact they hadda return and say:
"we ain't got da kine wine you guys just ordered. whuddelsyuh want?"

and... sorry, maddie, but no; that was a 2004 Pinot Noir they gave us. The one they alluded to on the menu was a 2000 Chateau StJean.
Different vintage, different price.
The wine they gave us, was not even on the menu, at all. Mighta been an extra, or a sample bottle, or a mistake in the delivery, but it wasn't on the wine list.
What we received at a discounted price of twennyfive bux was on average, a ten dollar retail vino.

hey, whoa there! no one else is implying it was totally ruined. after all, as a guest there that nite what da hell do i have to say about anything anyway? nuthin. Just out of a sense of justice, and to get it off my chest, i needed to vent re; experiences in an industry i am all too painfully conversant with, having worked as a butler, waiter, manager, bartender, etc, etc... for far too long in the past...

and of course, i would never have raised hell anywhere near the birthday gal. The elucidation of the shortcomings was made to the manager and here today...
Never in front of the Queen for the day.

My friends in the restaurant business used to tell me that there's about a 30% markup on the price of a bottle of wine on a menu, so if a wine lists at $30 on a menu, it only cost the restaurant around $10-15. A 2004 Pinot? Sheesh. That stuff would still be at the grape juice stage! 2000 Chateau St. Jean sounds more promising, although most of the best pinots come from Oregon (look for Adelsheim...great pinot with a very pretty label).

That always happens during the local news. Get one commercial on KHON, then I change the channel to KITV, get one commercial. Then I change 'em to KGMB, get one too. Then I change to KHNL, get something I already heard about on da' odda' channels.

Or how about when it seems the commercial is longer than the program itself. :(

I agree, HT has better "news" and wala au 'kine stuffs. Maui No Ka Oi too! :)

Thank you, but my birthday was in June. My sister and I took several people out to dinner last night to celebrate my mom's 82nd birthday. Kimo was one of our guests. My mom was the "birthday girl."

Do you really want to get into a discussion about wine with me, Allen? Drink a Chateau St. Jean merlot YOUNG. The 2000 is a little past its prime, but would have been OK. The 2004 was dandy. (No, not "grape juice.") And you don't drink the stuff anyway, so what do you care?

<sigh>

Sorry your entire evening was ruined. Gosh Almighty, I'll try to do better next time.

Better yet, YOU buy next time. Then I'll go into a public forum and yap about how awful it was.

Over and out ...

No apology needed! Sorry I'm a little bitchy. (OK, more than a little!)

Thank you for the birthday wishes for my mom ... I will let her know. I just got off the phone with her, so I'll tell her tomorrow. Then I get to have that discussion about Internet buddies, which is always fun. Heh!

Drivers who speed in intersections + rainy weather = wet pedestrians.

I didn't get wet when a VW Jetta zoomed by me at an intersection, but a friend of mine did. To make it worse, the guy ran a stop light.
