I thought I'd make a thread about how many programs people are currently running on their computer.
Here's my list for tonight:
Firefox (with 3 tabs)
GTA:SA
GTA:SA control center
ad muncher
NOD32
Webroot's spysweeper
rainlendar
EDIT: A few moments after I made this thread, my computer restarted. I guess its revenge for using it to look for a laptop  (and the last thing I need is someone to say "OWN3D!!")

Firefox in the foreground, of course, with Finder (does that count?), Dashboard, Mail, iTunes, and Skype running in the background. Sometimes I'll have iChat going. I boosted the RAM on this Mac to 2GB, but even with all that room I try not to have too much running at the same time.
On my PC, I would have easily six or seven programs running by default, not counting close to a dozen services and other oddities in the system tray (usually programs that I couldn't set to suppress their tray icons). Mac live makes me want to run more frugally, I guess.

I often forget about the finder since it's always there. But I would say that counts too. Keeps everything organized. You are lucky to have a G5 that can push to 2gigs or more of RAM. I have my G4 to near capacity at 1.12 GB. That said, it seems to run very smoothly even with all these applications open... though I have to admit, they are not memory hogs like Final Cut Pro (which I don't have).

I try not to have too many things going at once, too, since I try to be a good network citizen. However, I normally have:
Finder
Safari
Dashboard
Fetch
Skype
iTunes
MS Word (I go to it so often, I find it's efficient just to leave it open)
On my PC, there are a lot more with names I don't always comprehend. I'm just not fond of Windows.

I have to use one of these things at work and I feel the same way about Windoze.

I try to not run anything unnecessary in the background so my computer can run optimally so my system tray is rather uncluttered, but here are the essentials I do run:
Windows XP Professional
AVG anti-virus
Ad-Aware 1.06
Various hardware drivers necessary to run my laptop
And that damned toilet that's in our bedroom!!!!
