View Full Version : Health Department: Sayonara, Sandwiches!

What a disaster this story (http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050930/NEWS01/509300358/1001) reveals...For the past 19 years, Sharon Black has spent her Saturday afternoons making dozens of sandwiches and handing them out to homeless people, complete with a cup of chilled juice and a helping of human kindness.
But after the state Department of Health learned this month that Black's Kau Kau Wagon — that's what she calls her loose-knit group of volunteers — lacked a required permit, she was ordered to stop. One complaint, and nearly two decadesof heartwarming humanity is quashed? Even more frustrating was that the group got a permit and had an approved kitchen to make the sandwiches: the Institute for Human Services. But when Black went to IHS to vouch for her efforts, Lynn Maunakea said no. That they were fine helping when it was "under the radar," but they weren't willing to do it officially. And, by the way, Maunakea said, Black can't do it anymore.

That's worse than that story about the health department shutting down a kid's sidewalk lemonade stand. Surely there must be a way around this. :(

If Lingle wants to earn back some karma, she should find an executive power in her purse to use here. I empathise with the Health Department in a way, and certainly if non-credible folks were out there giving bad food to the homeless they'd be slammed for not doing their job, but... sheesh.
What really galls me is Lynn Maunakea's position. Okay, fine, you don't want to write a letter to say, "These sandwiches are made in our approved facility." But to then say, "Now that folks are paying attention, you gotta get outta here." That's awful. Maunakea's been in a pinch many a time, caught in a tight place and looking for help from anyone. I'll eat my hat if a rule has never been bent, a check never cashed, to keep her doors open.
Surely she can see a bit of the IHS' mission in what the sandwich folks are doing... and become an ally and an advocate to find a solution for them, rather than just piling on the misfortune.

MAMA owned several "resturants" in the Chinatown area. Sharon Black's distribution of food never affected any of the bussinesses in the area. Infact, one could see the lines, the distributions of food , the clean-ups in the place. It would be left in better shape then which they came.
How unfortunate that Maunakea would back down in giving a letter to the Health Dept. so Sharon can continue in distributing food to the Homeless and the needy. I will not give to IHS anymore, no way. There are other agencies that can benefit and with Directors who are truly for the Homeless and Needy!
I hope and pray that a resturant will see Sharon's plight and come to her aide. My best to Sharon and crew. I remember one Thanksgiving. I was nosy. I stood in line like the rest. Got a plate for someone who couldn't walk. Wow! That was a meal! I wanted to go back in line for myself!!!! :D
Good Luck.

Aloha All
Peshkwe sent me this link to join u all. First of all I want to say a huge MAHALO for ur support of our lil program KAU KAU wagon. WOW I had no idea but this is wonderful to be able to see all these wonderful people show some heart for others in our community with the greatest of needs.
It's people like u that give lil programs like ours a chance to make a difference. And how can I ever tell u thank u enough? But trust me I'll always try.
To make sure u all have an update, My Auntie Penny, who owns the Penny's Snack Bar, wrote the letter for us and I now have a permit. Although I know by no means will my harassment be over doing what we do, we have a great start in the right direction. The DOH inspector who helped us on this...TONY, was wonderful to us every step of the way. He went way out of his way to help us through this process. So we will be out there today doing what we do, bringing food and most of all the reality of HOPE from our hearts to those who need us most.
I'll write more soon and give more details. But for now I just wanted to make sure u know how thankful for ur support.
BTW for those of u who don't know....LMAO I type way faster then my thoughts and have been dubbed the Huked Un Funix Qween. So bare with me on all the typos and mispellings. Yes, I really am educated. LOL Just not too talented in the typing dept of life. LOL
Hope u all have a wonderful weekend!!

Aloha e Kalona. Thanks for joining us here. Here's hoping that this week's brush with trouble gains you some exposure and some new support for what you're doing... and glad that it's already brought you a new partnership and hopefully some renewed faith in humanity. I'll watch for you on the news -- smiling, if not a little wet.
I liked the Advertiser update. And how the problem with the Health Department was minimized and the eviction by IHS became the primary obstacle. Still don't know what they were thinking. Kudos to Penny Vance and Penny's Lunch Wagon and Snack Bar on Sand Island Access Road. Next time I'm in the neighborhood, I'll put in an extra big order!

Aww thanks PZ
It really has helped refresh our faith and hope in the community as a whole. Sometimes it feels like we're alone out there but then a lil miracle like this comes along. So just maybe our getting banned A K A homeless LOL from IHS will turn out to be a blessing after all.
And just maybe the good board members at IHS will ask some serious questions of their director. Last I heard the salary there as a director is quite hefty. Makes it kinda hard to understand how it appears that they may have forgotten their own mission. I sure miss the attitude of Father Du Tiel. I am confident he would have never allowed for such a thing to happen.
Most important to me above all the BS, is that the people who are in need at IHS don't get consequences for admin behavior that has nothing to do with them. I would NEVER advocate that IHS patrons not get the help this generous communty has shared with them through the years. Every lil bit helps. The problem in my eyes is not the ones there getting the help but maybe the ones providing the help.
Also I would like to strongly say that by far MOST of the staff at IHS has been wonderful to us. Especially the kitchen staff. We will miss working with them!
So please if ur a supporter of IHS, keep on supporting them, becuace it's not about the staff, it's about the people who are in need. We have to separate the admin BS from the people there seeking help to get on their feet.
But as u know there's always more to a story then is publicly stated. So keep ur eyes open and u'll see how the dots begin to connect. lol hint hint.
Have a great weekend ALL !!!

Aloha Kalona!
So just maybe our getting banned A K A homeless LOL from IHS will turn out to be a blessing after all.I'm thinking you're exactly right. I believe certain things happen for a reason, and although you say that your immediate solution (Penny Vance's aloha) is a temporary one, I think it needed to eventually happen anyway. Although you'd been allowed all these past years to utilize the IHS facilities with no apparent problems, it's now become obvious that that arrangement, which has since come under the bureaucratic watch of Ms. Maunakea, really wasn't pono.
If, as Ms. Maunakea stated earlier, you and the Kau Kau Wagon had all this time been working "under the radar screen" of scrutiny, I also believe that if Father Du Tiel was still in charge, he would've provided you with whatever stealth protection you needed to remain under the radar screen, rather than worry about his own welfare like Ms. Maunakea is apparently doing, because I believe that in his own heart he would've felt that the mission of your work was a righteous one.
But as u know there's always more to a story then is publicly stated. So keep ur eyes open and u'll see how the dots begin to connect. lol hint hint. You can bet we'll all be watching for this drama to unfold. ;)
May the wind be always at your back with smooth sailing from here on in. Aloha! http://allthingshawaiian.com/lurkah/graphics/shaka.gif

LMAO U get em!!! :) Thanks....the wind at my back has been the blessing of people like u who believe in being a part of the solution and who care enough to make a difference in their own special way. As far as the Lynns of the world, ehhh they get to live with their own stuff...Karma is an amazing thing when u mess with it enough. What u put out u always get back many times over that includes good and not so good.
They can slap us around all they think they need to BUT I am confident they will NEVER get our heart. We believe in making a difference and we will continue to find ways to do so. The greatest part is we're not alone. Thanks to people like u and others on this discussion board who are willing to see the big picture.
Father Du Tiel started his program with peanut butter snadwhiches. And his dream to make a difference grew into IHS. I'm sure he is one of the many angels looking upon us through our battles.

It seems the 'grass roots' aspect of what Father Du Tiel did and you do is what works best. Then, projects start to grow and everything gets mired in administrative paperwork (not to mention egos), obligations, rules and regs. All of a sudden the mission becomes secondary (or lower).
I so agree with you about the karmic consequences. It'll happen...and then some! In the meantime...when one door closes there's always another waiting to open. Ya just have to find it! You've already found a window. The door is not far away! Thank you for making a difference in the lives of people who really need it. There, but for the grace of God...go any one of us. No one is immune.

Funny t'ing, because a distributor of food to my school's snackshop (musubis, bentos, etc) had to stop because they too didn't have any permits (but the students loved the musubis, and they were big for the price).
Now the distributor raised the price for something that is 1/2 the size smaller than the previous musubi.

Tutu...I agree...sometimes there's a reason for everything. And I think in our case, it's going to be improve. I agree in many cases the bigger an organization becomes the more red tape can be attached and the vision and original purpose decreases from other distractions. But I think in some few cases that isn't always how it is.
When I started my KauKau wagon in the 80's, we went out with a few gallons of juice, and about 30-50 sandwiches. We used my kids Radio Flyer wagon, to haul it through the park. I saw children living in the park and when the holidays came, I just couldn't stand the thought that these kids would have no celebration, no tree, no nothing, not even a hot meal. So I recruited this chirch to help. I remember clearly getting into a serious battle with the Parks and Recs director. Looking back now, I still laugh at the insanity of it all.
I dug this small hole in the ground and put a Christmas tree. he pulled it out, I slammed it back in. This went on like two children. LOL Keep in mind this time period because back then u rarely ever heard the word "homeless"
Next thing u know Linda Hosek (a reporter) decided to do a story about this battle. She called us the Kau Kau wagon which obviously stuck with us.
U really couldn't tell the homeless apart from me. I fit in like a glove. LOL
Some things are just natural. Anyway here's the kicker, after all that fight to get the tree in there, two nights later it was stolen. LMAO! I was annoyed yet laughing. Anyway, determined as I was, I went out and bought another one, a lil more Charlie Brown looking though. Ehhhh Budget was tight then too.
The end results we had a HUGE Christmas with gifts, toys, and hot meals for everyone.
All these years later, we now pass out over 200 plus sandwiches. 10 gallons of juice, snacks and cloths and stuff we get, when we get them. The last Sat of the month we have a church....the Seventh Day Adventist of Monoa that does the meal for us. And wow let me tell u, they make our sandwiches look kinda ghetto. HAHA So I'd say we grew quite a bit from the early days.
Christmas for the past many years has been put on by the Hawaiian Hilton. WOW! they don't play around. I can't tell u how tempting it is to get right in line. The staff there is awesome! Talk about some wonderful hearted people!
At Thanksgiving, I am over joyed. Tons of people get together and cook and work so hard. They bring hot fresh turkeys and all the fixings. We even had some wonderful high profile people help serve the meal. For those getting the meals, this seems to really give them a moment of feeling special. That to me is so awesome to see their excitement when an official takes the time to acknowledge them as real human beings with real needs. All politics aside it is a wonderful event to see unfold. Don't get me wrong. I sweat having enough every year. But somehow I just jamm those phone lines and everyone I know gets called. I shamelessly ask for everything. The public comes through like champions. Talk about ALOHA....WOW this would bring a fire in the coldest of hearts. I'm always in awe. We feed over 600 people for that event.
So not all programs that grow lose the big picture or the reason for being there. I doubt we ever will. Cause for us it must and will always be about the people in need and about the HOPE we share. Hope has no price. :)

So let me tell u about how it went today. LMAO Not a single officer even showed up. I guess after the BS call to my house yesterday pretending to be a homeless guy and concerned if I got my permit or not, they realized I had the permit. LMAO ROTFF!!! !!
Anyway, there was a few extra volunteers, some students from U.H. doing a project study. LOL geeez they really know how to pick em huh? And this couple with a lil baby that bought a lil toy wagon with sandwiches and juice. IOn the wagon they had these signs..."ALOHA doesn't need a permit" etc. LMAO I had to crack up laughing as did Candy. One of the guys who is buying the pups came out with his daughter and bought some T-Shirts. It was really awesome.
I think they were all very surprised at our lil operation. One of the downtown board members was there as well. He's always been a very good supporter of what I do. He got to see once again for himself that YES we do clean up, and NO, no one was urinating and defacating on the ground. Geeeez.
And ur all gonna love this part....the Parks and Recs guys gave us a Huge Congrats! LMAO!! They are really good to us as well. So that was really neat!
It was really nice to be able to have more then enough food and snacks. And yeah we did get there a lil later then usual, but mostly because of the rain and trying to rearrange our norm route. I think Loves bakery is gonna miss us now, cause every weekend we would buy 20 plus loafs of bread, but now that will be much tougher to do, so I have one of our reg volunteers buy the bread from the Navy Commisary. It's actually cheaper for us as well.
It was interesting the smiles and thank u's we got from the whole line. They knew. They read the article and talked heavily about it. They were so happy with us for fighting and so mad at Lynn for her actions and lack of compassion for them. It was really interesting to hear them speak out like that.
So it all worked out good. And it felt better then ever!
LMAO I am posting on two boards now and I really am getting confused what I shared where. LOL Geeeez this is gonna be tough to keep up with. But I can't help but see some humor in this challenge. So if I ever seem like I am being repetitive it's only because I am lost! HAHAHAHA

LMAO Lurka Ummm Uhhh I don't think so. Not if it means treating people like that. I'll just keep it all simple from my end. I don't want anything to allow or encourage me to forget WHY I do what I do. I want to always be thankful that I get to make a difference because I genuinely care. My PR skills aren't that great especially when it comes to advocating for those in need against those that forget why they do what they do and for who. :)

I agree AlohaBear, it should never be wrong if the intent to help others is genuine and from the heart. If anything we as a community need to embrace and encourage those willing to step fourth in any way we can including a simple phone call to the right place to support those who dare try and make a difference in a positive and healthy way.
There's been some really good things that have happened since the article.
Wendy's donated two blocks of Cheese for this weekend, others have come fourth and donated bread, and lettuce. Some of have writen letters to the editor. It all really makes such a huge difference.
Even our Thanksgiving meal of HOPE is gaining it's own HOPE in some people that are offering to help out in many different ways. For those of u who have never experienced the deepest smile of those getting the help, I can't describe to u how wonderful it is. Makes me feel kinda selfish at the end, cause it's such a priceless return.

Kimmo,
I know this sounds a lil nuts, but I do know there are still people in this state that really do care and really do have the Aloha in their heart. I just keep my attention to them. As for those who don't, they get to live with that.
Not a single one of us is gauranteed from ever being in a position where life doesn't hit us so hard that we are in need. The storm of Katrina was one of the toughest examples. Katrina didn't care who was rich or poor, or who was who. I can only hope in the depths of my heart that no one else will have to go through that experience. But like I said there is no gaurantees.
For every voice just as ur own that speaks out against what they believe is wrong, is a voice that dares to make a difference. Just as what happened on our case. We are thankful people spoke up and things turned for the better.
But w/o those voices we would have never had a chance to keep doing what we are doing.
:)

Nah Kalona, I was only teasing. You're akamai in realizing that the "Aunty Aloha mu'umu'u" that you wear as the Kau Kau Wagon Lady was tailor-made just for you, especially with your unique background and ability to personally relate to the life and living conditions these homeless folks are living on a daily basis.

I just can't imagine what the holidays would be like if we didn't share. It's so much a part of my holiday tradition for many years, I think I'd be lost if it was any other way. Hugs to u big time!! Hope to see u soon.
Lurka
I agree big time, no expectations is the wisest and most real way to reach out and share. basically it's the old saying what comes around goes around many times over. What u put out is what u get back. I can't count how many times I have been blessed with good things unexpected. Even a simple thank u, is priceless. And sometimes that thank u simply comes in the form of a smile. I got tons of smiles this past Sat.
JDUB
OK I accept ur positive unique comments. LOL Actually I kinda find ur comments with some humor. I am so glad to hear that our motivation is being shared with u.
Like I said...Imagine this Island alone has 1.25 million people, and if each person did one thing....anything at all, we could make a HUGE difference.

The Lt. Gov's (Duke Aiona) office called me a few minutes ago stating they are looking into the law RE: feeding Hawaii's hungry.
They are seeking ways to possible change it, or adjust it so people like me who are trying to make a difference can do so w/o all the red tape, cost of permits, etc....and still maintain the safety of those in need.
This is really good especially for those in need and for those who are genuine in trying to help out in their community.
Thank u all again for making a difference by being heard and supporting such a powerful issue of human compassion!!
Have a great weekend! :)

That would be awesome if they could pull this off, Kalona, even if it might be used as a warm and fuzzy publicity thing for them come this Thanksgiving. But eh...nothing wrong with that, yeah? Main thing the people are the ones who'll be benefitting in the long run, long after Mr. Aiona is gone from office. :D

Geev 'em Kalona! Tell Duke what it would take for you to be able to continue your program and to get other groups involved in these programs. It's everybody's kuleana to take care of their neighbors, especially if those neighbors are in dire straits because society or mental illness has forced them to be homeless.

But I can say this, Duke has come out so far every year I have asked him. He's been humble and supportive and I believe he really does have a heart for the people and he does keep it real. He's been genuine as long as I have known him.
I do know there a few politicians like him such as Suzanne Chun. And unfortunately there are some that are just about the public image and have NO clue how to walk the talk. For those, I don't bother to waist my energy.
I just do my famous stink eye and walk on. LOL And here's the humor part....
I actually got written up and investigated for my outstanding stink eye ability.
LMAO I offered to wear dark sun glasses to help remedy the problem. LOL But I guess that wasn't taken too well. LOL Long story. It's not a good thing to be seen as the unrully rebel child of the system. HAHAHA Geeez!

Eh Kalona, is this story (http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051101/NEWS01/511010311/1001) one of the "dots" that you were talking about?

The truth is I really do wish her well. She did do some good there. I guess for us at the Kau Kau wagon, something else came into play that most likely has nothing to do with our program and she was possibly responding to the preasure from else where. Like I said the bottom line in all this, is it's all about those in need, not those of us who serve. I wouldn't want any person who needs to go w/o because of things that have nothing to do with them.
Have u been watching the Medical Examiner story on KITV? I hope so. Cause that's where the links begin. I think u can go to the KITV site and ck out the story. It gets more interesting each night which would include tonights report as well. Maybe then this whole ugliness will create a bigger picture then currently meets the eye. :)
Anyway, right now I am busting my butt trying to get everything together for the TG dinner for the 26th of Nov at 1230 ...Gateway Park...next to Hawaii theater. We have lots of needs. We have made some progress.
So if any of u out there believe u can help out please let us know.
We need more ready to serve cooked hams and turkeys, pans of yams cooked & ready to serve, we need pans of stuffing, pans of cranberry sauce, more rolls, fresh fruits, lots of pies sliced, a generator, tables and chairs, toiletries, old cloths, and fast food coupons that can be used all year round to continue to give those in need another meal after the event. We also need the to go containors for the food, more large heavy duty paper plates.
and we could use some tarps.
We did get some live local music, but no generator, we got star bucks coffee and some jamba juice, we got the eating utencils, and some of the stuff I mentioned above. So there is hope that we will get this all together. I just have to jamm my phone lines and keep shamelessly begging. LOL HAHA
The great news is we have lots of volunteers to serve. Wish we had that every week, but ehhh I won't complain, we're just glad we can make this an extra special day for those who need it.
I dunno if u all know but the reason we decided to do this the Sat after TG is because we found that there is many programs that actually do TG day. Hunger and need for those in our community is a daily thing. We are a small program but I believe every lil bit counts and makes a difference.
Hope u all have a great weekend. For all u Veterans out there....MAHALO!

Thank u sooooooo much! We really are short on hams, yams, stuffing, pies, fresh fruits and rolls. We got some but I am worried it may not be enough. However I have been on the phone big time so I am working on building what we do have. I went to the Foodbank yesterday and scored some cases of cranberry sauce, and these awesome lil mini airline food packs. They are perfect for the people. That was an exciting new find. We even scored some bread and lettuce for this weekend. So we are set for this weekend.
I am so glad the Foodbank is there. They sure make a huge difference for our lil program.
Sliced and ready to serve would be great! We will be there 1230....or maybe a lil earlier. I certainly will try to get there earlier. Be sure to confirm with me what u or others can bring so I can keep track and know what to keep focus on to get more of. Right now we have 17 turkeys.....we need 12 more. So atleast we're a lil over the half way mark. :)
We even got some Star Bucks coffee and jamba juice. We're getting there but just a lil scary sometimes as the time gets closer.

Aloha All
Hope u all had a good weekend. :)
I thought I would share a lil update on things.
Sen. Suzanne Chun sent me a bill that looks good to help out those that are helping out others. It's about where an organization or group, can use State Facility kitchins to make their food to give out to those in need, such as the schools ect. I think that would good. I am sure it would be helpful. It may not be the complete answer but no doubt it is a good answer to start with and certainly could make a difference.
Our HUGE Thanksgiving of Hope Dinner is looking really good. The Lt Gov Aiona will be there along with Ed Kubo, and Peter Carlysle (sp ck) Plus some of the Shopo members. Actually we have a great group of people that will be there to help out. We have many people to serve. And we were able to get lots of good stuff to pass out.
However...we still need a lil bit more to able to meet the full needs of all those that come.
OK ...we are so close it's a lil scary! But we're almost there. 6 days to go.
Here's what we still NEED to make it complete.......and enough to serve atleast 600 people.
We NEED 5 more pans of cranberry sauce
We NEED 15 more pans of Yams
We NEED 6 more Turkeys
We NEED 11 more Hams
We NEED 10 more pans of Stuffing
We Need 12 bags of Fresh Fruit
We Need 5 more cans of whip cream
We still NEED 12 more tables, a generator
OUR WISH LIST
Fast food coupons
That's it.....If u know of anyone that can help out please let me know.
They are also welcome to drop off anything 1230 on the corner of Hotel and Bethel Street.
Nov 26th Sat. next to the Hawaii Theater. We should be there until the food is gone....maybe around 3-4pm.
I would like to deeply thank each of u especially those of u who called to help out. WOW! I think Thanksgiving is really one of my favorite holidays cause it's the time of the year, I not only get to give Thanks, but I find that I am so thankful to have had the chance to do what we do because of each of u!

It's gonna be more like Christmas if u ask me. Seeing those faces light up there and the excitement is so contagious!
The Star Bulletin did a good story today. I was a bit surprised. I thought maybe they had forgotten. But when I went to go get coffee for my sisters and kids while they waited in line to purchace their bargains, I saw my mug shot on the front page BIG and I swear I looked like a salewoman for stuffing and yams. LMAO!!! So much for my effort to encourage the camera man into conselaing the wrinkles and dark circles from lack of sleep. LOL No shame I had to try.
Ur all really amazing and I just don't know how to thank u enough. I just wish u all could see the smiles of hope that I get to see doing this.

WOW and Pesh I love how u called and joined us VIA phone. That was too wonderful!
Yes, the event filled my heart right over the top. It was something I will forever keep as a treasure. The volunteers were the best it gets. They were the real HEROS! I just was the lucky one to put it together but they were the reason for the events success. There are no words that can describe seeing that much community heart in one place giving their all to help others. WOW. Talk about blessings to be thankful for...this was by far an understatement.
It was as if we came from Deaths door and totally came alive and then some!
AND the band.....The Soundettes. OMG They were awesome! They took this lil program from the ghetto so to speak LMAO to a new height of class and warmth. The sound crew and set up of the music and the band combined was a dream come true. The smiles out there were the biggest I had ever seen. They even bought this excellent Hula dancer. She was great! The TG of HOPE was the best ever!!! I didn't think it could get better but gawd it was the best!
This was the best lack of sleep time I ever had. And so we move onto Christmas. The good news is we don't need food cause the Hawaiian Hilton does all that. All we do is the suppliment stuffs. Maybe some of u would like to join us there. Let me know.

Aunty I look forward to seeing u Christmas.
OK People, I know u about had enough of me asking for things.....But there's NO way I cannot. When it comes to children I can't turn my back in anyway.
I dunno how I got this task in my lap but it's there and I deparately need help.
There's a childrens shelter on the Eva side with 42 kids ranging from ages
o-17. The agency that has helped them other Christmas's has bailed out on them in the last minute (I can relate to that feeling) to help another program. WOW that's stinks!!!
Anyway the kind of gifts these kids are looking for is really simple things such as a Samoan bible, knee high socks, lego's etc. These children are homeless, the parents have a job but not enough to pay rent anywhere. They are all drug free parents and have been tested.
NO child should be w/o Christmas. I am going to get their wish list and I am going to ask every soul I know to ensure these children have the Chirstmas every child deserves.
Together we can make this happen. Like I said this is not something I went looking for, it found me. And I simply can't ignore it. I don't have the kind of money to do this on my own. My job is messing with me big time and I don't have the extra I use to have. But I am determined to see this happen.
Please e-mail me if u can help.............

Something odd went down with that. I haven't quite figured out the details so we backed off with the statement of "they have their wish list met"
Hmmmm. I sure hope so but seems odd.
But thanks for offereing to help. That's awesome.
I just had to share this with u all. It really gave me chicken skin. I couldn't help but think of the
Kau Kau Wagona and all the fabulous volunteers who have supported us in so many ways!!!
As I have always said....every lil bit really counts.
WOW!!!! This song is ALL of US!!!!! Very inspirational. Very soulful and so beautiful.
I hope u enjoy this as much as I do. It speaks my heart better then any song I have heard in many years. WOW!! Love it.
I have my greatest Christmas gift but it isn't under my tree or in a pretty box with ribbon and bows. It's what u have each shared with me. I am blessed more then I could have ever imagined. U shared my vision of hope, my strongest life dream came true.
I'm overwhelmed and so thankful! Thank u all for ur support in so many great ways. U have touched my heart. There is no greater gift then that for me.
From My heart .....

DESTINY'S CHILD LYRICS
Stand Up For Love
[Beyonce]
There are times I find it hard to sleep at night
We are living through such trouble times
And every child that reaches out
For someone to hold
For one moment
They become my own
And how can I pretend that I don't know
What's going on?
When every second
And every minute
Another soul is gone
And I believe that in my life
I will see
An end to hopelessness
Or giving up
Or suffering
Then we all stand together this one time
Then no one will get left behind
And stand up for life
Stand up
And here me sing
Stand up
For love
[Kelly]
Im inspired
And hope
For each and everyday
That's how I know that things are going to change
So how can I pretend that I don't know
What's going on?
When every second
And every minute
Another soul is gone
And I believe that in my life
I will see
An end to hopelessness
Or giving up
Or suffering
If we all stand together this one time
Then no one will get left behind
And stand up for life
Stand up
For love
[Michelle]
And it all starts right here
And it starts right now
One person stand up man!
And the rest will follow
From the forgotten
And From the Unloved
Im gonna sing this song,
And I believe
That in my life
I will see
An end to hopelessness
Or giving up
Or suffering
If we all stand together this one time
Then no one will get left behind
And stand up
for life
stand up
and sing
Stand up
For love

Wheeeew this age thing is rough. I forgot my password here. LOL
I felt like I was in the rumblestillkin game. After several times I finally got it. Now if I am lucky I will remember which one worked. HAHA
Anyway just wanted to come by and wish u and ur loved ones all a safe, happy, healthy holidays and new year. I also wanted to thank each of u for ur support in helping the kau Kau wagon stay on it's feet to keep doing what it does. And trust me ur voice really does count. Everything is set to go for Christmas...thanks to the Hawaiian Hilton and their awesome staff. We will even have some nice entertainment.
Any of of u are welcome to come by. U can't serve or bring food though. That's all covered. However if u want to bring, candy, old cloths, and things like that, it would be welcome. Fresh Fruits are great and the fast food coupons are the best! Or just come by and enjoy the company and Hula dancers and stuff. I can tell u this it wouldn't be Christmas for me w/o this event. I love to see all the smiles even if it's just for a small moment of time.
If u think about it, it's the smiles we share in those times that stay with us forever.

Oooops LOL Told ya I have brain damage. I forgot to give that info.
It's Sunday Christmas day We will be serving at 1100 am. on Bethel and Hotel Street...next to Hawaii Theater in downtown.
On Christmas Eve....We will also be doing our regular thing, giving out sandwiches and snacks on Christmas eve the 24th Sat. ....same location.....but the usual time....1:45 pm..no later then 2:00 pm. We don't have cloths and stuff that day. So if u want, feel free to bring whatever u want that day and pass it out. :) That would be great! Then they would kinda have two Christmas celebrations. LOL No shame here. HUH? hahaha Candy canes, fresh fruits would be awesome, maybe some extra sanwiches, or sliced up fresh carrot, hard boiled eggs are a huge hit. Last week a friend made some home made fudge. OMG it was so ono!!! I had to make an extra effort to stay away from that area. LOL HAHA
Hope to see u there.

Awww No worry. I'm there every Sat. So we'll catch up.
The event went really well. I think one of the things the regulars noticed was a HUGE increase in Seniors. Lots more fixed income people then usual.
However the smiles were tons. That was the best part. The Hawaiian Hilton employees really rock. They are so amazing and just so awesome. I can't begin to say how thankful we are.
I enjoyed watching the News last night and reading the papers. It seemed the reporters were all on a hot roll, showing just how many people gave up their time, efforts and resources to help others. One program after the other.
And to think some stupid over priced study had the nerve to say Hawaii people are cheap when it comes to volunteers and giving. Obviously they have never been to the real Hawaii and they have no real clue about the truths of the people here and just how big these hearts genuinely are. Too bad cause they would have known this state really does have some of the very best hearts when it comes to helping those in needs. Now that is the facts not just some magic ink BS. :)
Now onto our New year.
Happy New Year to ALL of u. I wish u all the very best in health, happiness, love, safety and all the great blessings u each earned and deserve!

Urgent!!!!!!!!!! SOS
There's a bill at the Senate right now that will be heard today at 2pm. It is about allowing non profits to use State Facility Kitchens to prepare food for those in need. This will help remove the red tape of the Dept Of Health permit for an approved kitchen for those who want to help out in the community to feed those in need. It would help so that the group can use the approved kitchen, and not have to worry about permits ect.
All u would need to do in order for this to get passed the first reading would be is to Fax a letter by no later then 2pm today to the Senate saying u support this bill. Ur welcome to hand write it or type it.
It is Senate Bill 2734 Senator Baker/ Senator Inouye Bill.
The Fax number is 586-6659
If u want u can show up to support the bill as well. The hearing is today at 2:45pm Capitol Room 225.
Mahalo for any support u can help with. Remember all u have to do is fax a short letter stating u support the bill. And then be sure to give ur name and contact info. One sentence is all it takes.
EVERY LETTER COUNTS! especially at such short notice.
MAHALO BIG TIME!

OK U can also e-mail ur testimony as well. But u must hurry because the hearing is at 245pm. Ur suppose to have ur testimony there 24hrs in advance but the lady told me that if the e-mail gets there early enough it may still be read and will still count as a support.

Direct ur testimony to HTH and TGO
include bill number SB2734
U may want to call and leave a message as well that u have

WOW that's awesome .....MAHALO SO MUCH!!! To me this is about encouraging people to be able to do something if they want to w/o making obstacles. Recently because HPD has pushed away programs that do not have the permit, our numbers at the Kau Kau wagon have deeply increased.
It hasn't been easy meeting the demand but ehhhh we will always give it the best we have cause we believe in what we do...simple and real :)
If you want to confirm your e-mail's receipt, you need to do so using the Public Access Line's phone number. Do not call the Senators' offices direct as they don't receive the e-mails. Evidently, the e-mails get processed and given to the respective committees.
HB, I'm guessing you already e-mailed your testimony. Here's a copy of what I sent. When I called to confirm the e-mail with Senator Baker's office the employee was nice but sort of curt and told me it had to be confirmed through the Public Access Line (so I sent Kalona an e-mail to send out to that effect). For those of you who've not e-mailed yet, it's important that the subject area has the SB number and the e-mail itself again has the SB number as well as your contact info.
My subject line: IN SUPPORT OF SB 2734
Dear Senators Baker and Inouye:
I greatly support Senate Bill 2734 that allows non profits to use State Facility Kitchens to prepare food for those in need. This Senate Bill is very much needed and I truly appreciate it now being done to help our community-at-large.
Our state of HI needs to be proactive in doing what we can to help those less fortunate than we are. Lessening red tape for non profits in being able to use approved State Facility Kitchens helps immensely.
Please do everything you can to help ensure that SENATE BILL 2734 gets enacted.
Sincerely grateful for your doing this,

I went to feed the Homeless today as usual. alohacandy, kalona808 and the rest of the crew were there too. The crowd large, many are elderly. New faces always appear every week. It's sad...everytime I go. :(
I do my best to make them smile when they come to my station. I passed out "candies" today. I flirted with the old fella's and made them laugh. One in particular had baby blue eyes. I told him his eyes touch my heart today. I asked his name...he said, "Dan." He asked mine. I told him Lynn. From walking a bit hunched in line, he walked away standing tall! ;)
Today, I started singing "We Are Family...." everybody laughed and smiled. It doesn't take money to make someone smile for a little bit. All it takes is Aloha.
Compassion and showing you care is all they ask. It is so heartwarming to give than to recieve. Please join us if you have time.
On another note...as I was leaving, Sharon called me over. A woman was laying on her side. She was on the concrete wall fronting Hotel and Bethel Streets. She fell last night approximatey around 7:10 p.m. Unable to yell for help for minutes, she finally got the attention of a Police Officer. He called 911 who sent an ambulance.
When the ambulance arrived they considered the call a Non-Emergency and did not take her to the hospital. The officer shook his head and made a police report of the incident. There was a Witness.
The woman is Homeless. 51 years old. I checked her and found she was injured. Her left side numb, black and blue left eye and partial numbness on her left side of her face. I called 911 immediately.
I was asked by the operator all kinds of questions. I answered them all.
There is an agency where they investigate allegations of wrong doings of said agencies. It is called OIC. I told the woman, Elizabeth, I would follow-up on it for her. I believe her rights were violated.
alohacandy and kalona808 stayed with Elizabeth till the Ambulance arrived and made sure she got the help she needed.
It is an insult to everyone if this is happening. How cruel. How unjust.

Per Kalona808:
This elderly homeless lady fell last night and injured her side. The poor ting. Dagggg! The police last night called the Ambulance to help her, but from what the lady told us they refused to help her.
According to her, they told her it was not a 911 call, and then the EMT complained about his back being sore and that she was too heavy. IF...I repeat IF.... that is accurate GAWD that was cruel! Those in the emergency service field know clearly u don't get to pick and choose who u deal with. Yes, they smell bad sometimes, but when ur homeless, getting to a shower isn't easy for everyone especially in the case of this lady who was left out all night and couldn't even walk to a bathroom.
It bothered me right to my core. This poor lady has a ton of very serious medical issues on top of her fall last night. She has a huge tumor, huge boils, diabetes, and tons of other medical issues. And yet she was left on the street all night on the cement wall.
She also recently had surgery and was in the hospital for 3 months. But when she was released she was released right back to the streets. That just doesn't make sense to me. I don't understand why she wasn't assisted in getting into a care home. All hospitals have social workers. That's a part of their job from my understanding. Maybe she was never referred to a hospital worker cause she has a worker. I dunno, but I do know somewhere someone really let this lady down as a human being!!
Actually I think she was let down by too many people.
Well, those of u who know me well enough know I wasn't going to accept this lady being denied treatment. I had Aunty call for the ambulance and I was shocked, it was as if it was a 21 question series. WOW! And then they told Aunt P, that they would be there in 15 minutes. There must be something I don't know about going on. Some other part of the story. Maybe this poor lady has called the ambulance several times and now basically they are burnt out and feel like taking her to the hospital is like spinning their wheels. I've seen that happen before. And sometimes as wrong as it is, it's a common human reaction. U feel like dagg why do I bother and so easy to forget the big picture of why.
Plus I have also seen some of the emergency workers get a really bad time for bringing the non choice patients in, especially when they are homeless, or addicts, or chronics due to medical issues. Too much burnout on too many sides of the coin. And yet instead of fighting for a long term solution too many just lose their compassion and instead treat the person less as they should.
Anyway, Candy was there and she helped. Now that's a lady with tons of people passion. Her heart for others is as real and genuine as one can hope to have even the smallest portion.
The EMTs got there about 30 minutes after we called. One of the guys was real patient and u could tell he still had enough heart to look past the ugly side of the job, and instead saw the human.
The other one was testy and I could tell he was really holding back on what he was thinking. I think he found it annoying that I was there, BUT maybe he figured out who I was then he knew I wasn't going to back down on any denial stuff. I would have put up one hell of a fight. I dunno exactly why he held back but I could tell he was going that extra mile to control unleashing his real thoughts. Very unfriendly and cold. Without a doubt someone that had been doing the job for long enough to block out any side of the people compassion especially not the choice people.
End of story she was taken to the hospital to get some treatment. I certainly hope that she does get the treatment and not an in and out the door thing. If she is a frequent flyer like I think she may be from the responses she seems to be getting, then I know there is a chance she will be released within a few hours unless they find something that has to be treated.
I'm glad there is still enough of us out there that haven't lost our human side so much that we no longer see these people as humans and instead see them as inconveniences. That's so wrong.
alohacandy
August 5th, 2006, 11:57 PM
Kalona is correct about hospital social workers being able to help people get placed somewhere...like a care home or foster home. Having worked in medical social work for 20+ years, I know for a fact that many people refuse to be placed. Some would rather sleep in a park than go to a shelter or a care home. It can be very frustrating for the medical professionals involved who know that the person would be safer and cared for but as long as they are capable of making their own decisions, we can't force them to be placed. I'm glad that we were able to see the EMTs take this lady to be checked out at the hospital. She deserved that at the very least.

In this morning's StarBulletin http://starbulletin.com/2006/08/11/news/story02.html
HPD worker charged in record tampering
The woman claims the city is retaliating for her civil lawsuit
By Debra Barayuga
"An Oahu grand jury indicted Sharon Black, a civilian crisis-intervention counselor with the Honolulu Police Department for nine years, yesterday with second-degree unauthorized computer access, fourth-degree theft and tampering with government records about a year ago."
"Black denies doing anything wrong and says it was the result of a misunderstanding that she believed had been cleared up a year ago after she returned the reports sought by the medical examiner."
Bail for Black, who continues to run the Kaukau Wagon to provide meals for the homeless, was set at $5,000.

Department of Health, like many other controlling government institutions, was created using arguments that sound like this "You can't do it on your own, that's why we must protect you". This is the basic philosophical pillar of modern liberalism. The presumption is that you are incapable of fending for yourself, pretty much under all circumstances.
A bad restaurant got someone sick. Government decides to regulate the industry. But economics would drive the business down the drain.
Would you eat food that made you sick?
It's ironic that liberal philosophy leads to the creation of a Department of Health, which then shuts down food delivery to the most needy in our society, who would otherwise be the benefactors of social generosity.
"Hey, I know they are starving. But we don't want them to get sick! " Duh.
Just more Cognitive Dissonance on the left.

The lines once again long. The energy felt? Electrifying!!!!
We continued to serve our fellow neighbors who need our help. More new faces. More elderly people in line. Once again, the Homeless Problem escalates everyday. :(
No one is Safe. No one is 100% certain that he or she will be secured from the same plight of the ones who are in line today.
Aloha Harvest brought a container full of food and products again. Pizza, Bakery Products from Starbucks and other well known Bakeries in Hawai'i. KFC and ukipila goodies. Fresh Fruit Salad and Sandwiches too. A feast for all who came. :D
Loaves of Bread I offered to give away (two loaves each).heheheh People couldn't carry it cause they had too much in their hands already. Was so funny. I needed a gimick to make people come to my station and take the loaves. I yelled! It worked. They took. HAHAHAHAHAHA
My grandson, Antonio came with me today. He sat near me and behaved. He watched as Grandma did her thing making people laugh and showing her Aloha. I hope and pray he will continue my Legacy. ;)
We continue to need donations of clothes. Please bring whatever you can to Bethel and Hotel Streets on Saturdays @ 1:45 p.m. or contact me through PM. Or at lynn.vasquez@gmail.com
KauKau Wagon is there every Saturday except the last Saturday of the month.

Sharon Black was taken in and booked on Monday and is now out on bail. She will be arraigned on Thurs. at 8:30 a.m. at the Courtroom on 4th floor at 1111 Alakea St. She had a difficult day but her daughter and 2 friends were with her for support. We believe in her innocence and that justice will prevail in this complete waste of taxpayers' money. She will continue her Kau Kau Wagon every Saturday as she has done for many years. Any support her extended ohana can give her is most appreciated.
FYI She has been trying to find a lunch wagon to expand her outreach. If anyone knows of any that are for sale and CHEAP...or knows how to secure funding for her...please let us know.

You can count on me to be there!

I agree with you that Tax Payer's money is being wasted.
I'm angry at a System in which can't prosecute the true wrongdoers. I'm angry at the FBI for taking their sweet time. Let all the indictments begin so all Hawai'i can know WHO and WHAT they committed!!!
Sharon is INNOCENT!!!
The nerve.

Department of Health, like many other controlling government institutions, was created using arguments that sound like this "You can't do it on your own, that's why we must protect you". This is the basic philosophical pillar of modern liberalism. The presumption is that you are incapable of fending for yourself, pretty much under all circumstances.
Yes TimKona, that darn Department of Health, sticking their nose into things like testing for contaminated water, licensing adult residential care homes to track safety, regulating restaurant kitchens for cleanliness, and maintaining vital records (who needs records?!). Yep, you've got a point, we sure don't need any of those sort of public services from a "government institution"; Just let the strong survive!
Just more Cognitive Dissonance on the left.
Oh pleeeeeazzzze....

I'll be going to lend support to my good friend Sharon Black tomarrow morning. Her Trial date will be set. It will be at that time when the Truth will come out. I stand strong as well as her supporters and continue to believe she is Innocent of any wrong doing.
It's such a shame when so many others who are guilty of worse crimes are getting away and still remain in power. In time everything will come out. In time. I believe Justice will prevail...it always does. ;)

I went to Circuit Court this morning. Also, there was alohacandy, Linda, a retired 21 years HPD Detective, Cran and her daughter, Chas (Sharon's son) and of course Sharon.
And Ben Gutierrez of of Channel 4 News!!!
The Court was packed. Everyone in a somber mood. The Female Public Defender very strict and Bull Doggish.heheheh Very Bull Doggish. She separated Sharon from me. :p
Nah, I understood why.
Anyways. It went as expected.
Trial date is set for October 16, 2006.
We all will be there with more of her supporters in Full attendance!
I'm in charge of the Homeless!!! ;)

I arrived early. The amount of people startled me. I was worried we might not be able to feed them all. :( Sharon arrived with her son. Unlike last week with other goodies from Aloha Harvest - we only had our own meal to give away.
Sandwiches, cookies, Reese's candy and orange juice or water.
We counted at least 250 people. Everyone were fed and had seconds too! :D
It's getting bigger each week. We need HELP! Don't forget to donate if you can to our walk next week for The Food Bank Fundraiser.
The date is Aug 26th Saturday. The registration is at 830am and the walk will start at 9am. Also u can register online. They have an application or u can call and get one. The site explains it all. We would love to have u join us.
However, for those who would like to donate we are the KAU KAU Wagon agency #760. If u write a ck and ear mark for the Kau Kau Wagon 760, it will go into our Food Bank account. Food Bank will match the funds and it's tax deductable.

Btw: In the rush of serving, I had a wonderful surprise visit from a dear friend. He came up and gave me a Honi Honi and kiss to tell me how he was proud of me in what I was doing for the Homeless. It was my Hanai brother ~ Mr. Robert Cazimero.

I was thinking, obviously there's a boring, earthly explanation for that image. It must be a line or rope, maybe the camera strap or something, and it's too close to the lens, so it's out of focus. But it just fades away on the left, so it can't be a line or a rope or whatever. It doesn't look like a ray of sunlight, either, not at that angle!
God's finger?
Leo Lakio, what do you think it is?

HPD worker fails to stop theft cases against her
By Debra Barayuga
"A state judge has declined to halt administrative and criminal proceedings against a Honolulu police civilian worker for allegedly stealing medical examiner records."
"In court documents filed Tuesday in Circuit Court, Black contends the administrative and criminal proceedings against her are "part of a program of retaliation" by HPD for the sexual harassment suit she brought against HPD nine years ago and that the theft allegations are baseless."
"Black maintains she had permission from the medical examiner to use their records and took the records home to work on her report. She said the medical examiner staff knew she obtained copies because they had assisted her in printing out copies and had provided similar information to her. She said she returned the records the next day after she was asked to return them, and thought the matter was resolved."
"Still pending is a complaint Black filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging discrimination and retaliation by HPD after it learned of the theft allegations. If the EEOC finds in her favor, Black is expected to file suit in U.S. District Court, Beatty said."
In time Justice will PREVAIL. In time. ;)

I recieved a telephone call around lunch time today. It was Jade Moon. She contacted me through HT regarding a post I wrote on this thread. She had some things to give to the Homeless. Anyways, she called and asked if she could come by to dropped them off my Hale. Of course, I told told her Yes!!!
Wow! Jade Moon as has always been a guest in my Hale for years. I've missed her these past months when she left. :( As soon as she got out of her vehicle...I was stunned of her Beauty and Class.
Jade Moon came to MWH to bring her clothes and whatevers to donate to the Homeless of Kaukau Wagon. I thought was going be two bags. No way!!!! Ukapila bags with awesome clothes and accessories!!! All still look brand new!! :D
Beautiful Silk Scarves (I collect Scarves) but hands off to me. This is Donations for the Homeless. Mahalo Lovely Lady, Jade Moon. I've finally met you. Now I've got to meet the other Best Reporter in my book, Pretty Lady, Erika Engles!!!

Anyone wanna give Kalona a hand with the prep things for the weekend feed?
She's had some surgery and can't do as much of the lifting and all the up/down bending that she normally can.
Most everyone who can, shows up at the scheduled time so it's no problem with the unloading...it's just this time (and maybe next time too), things will be tough for building all the sammitches and loading up with the lifting and major movement being verboten by the doc.
Give her a hollah if ya can lend a hand with the preps in some way even if you can't stay to help with the feed, it's all good.

Peshkwe, Prior to her Surgery date...Sharon and I found out we were going in the same day. We told each other to stay away and don't bother one another in fear of being scolded again like 15 year olds and separated like we were in Court.heheheh
Luckily, she was coming out and I was going in. We missed each other by minutes. We only found out by email as were coming out of our sedation and full of Pain. We both missed the Food Bank Walk but alohacandy did excellent as did Chas!
My procedure was nothing compared to Sharons. She certianly needs Bedrest. She is so full of Aloha and Love. She thinks of the Homeless and those less fortunate before herself.
We always need volunteers to assist us on Saturdays. Now more than ever Sharon needs help. Like Peshkwe asked, please give Sharon a hollar if you can assist in making sandwiches.

From what I heard Chas went and messed up his ankle, so he's doin a really good hopalong gimp impression, which kinda puts a crimp in his ability to shift stuff too. Sharon's recently been a recipiant of 'Doc fuss' for busting open something already.
Someone nail her feet to the floor till she gets better or the woman will literally bust a gut trying to do.

LMAO Geeez, Cran and Lynn....over here dropping dimes on me like that. LOL
Glad my doc doesn't read this site. I didn't even know u were all still posting here. I had to try and read some back post and still I think I have way more to catch up on. :D
FYI I have been a good girl and I have slowed down. I had to take my babies to the park, either that or steam clean my rugs. And we both know doing that would bust open everything.
Speaking of Newsreporters....My daughter had the meanest crush on Shawn Ching for the longest time in HS. Tooo funny! But no doubt he has quite a list of female fans. I have a few favs also. I like the reporters who are down to earth in their style and delivery of a story. Keoki is up there, sometimes even with a serious news story he has me laughing. Such as when he was digging the Medical Examiners trash with garden gloves. LOL HAHAHA
Anyway Lynn PLEASE be sure and tell Jade thank u so much from us.
Also I kinda have bad news, we have to skim through the stuff because every now and then although people have the very best intentions there are certain items we can't pass out. I use to just put the bags on the grass and let those who need take what they wanted but a few times they found some odd items. Once was a wedding dress. That was interesting. LMAO
Another time we found some hmmm how shall we state this delicately....but battery operated intimate toys?
OMG!!! One of the Mahoo grabbed it and was having quite a wonderful time. EEEEEK!!! Other items like stripper cloths and stuff like that too. I can tell u quite a list of things that made us go Ooooo Ooooo My ummm not good!!! LOL (putting it mildly)
For weeks one lady walked around with a purple corset and those breast dangle things along with an interest
