Aloha……Aloha…….Aloha…….Aloha……..Aloha…….Aloha……Alo ha……

A new record company, Major Hana Records, launches in Hana and
releases a debut compilation CD, “'OHANA - Volume One”, featuring
22 songs (13 of which are in the traditional Hawaiian language and 9 in
English) from 8 of the Island of Maui's most talented artists and bands.

“'OHANA - Volume One” was produced by Dave Cochrane, who has written for and/or produced The Commodores, Lionel Richie, LL Cool J, James Brown, Public Enemy, Sheryl Crow, Paula Abdul, Atlantic Starr and many others.

The Artists on “'OHANA - Volume 1” are:
Uncle Boy Kanae - Hawaiian celebrity, radio personality, MC, host of countless Hawaiian events;
Bradah Larry & The Hailiimaile Band - Bradah Larry Golis, who plays regularly at the Grand Waila and the Four Seasons, Maui's two premier 'Westside' hotels and his boys from upcountry;
Kaleo - formerly of the famed Ho'opi'i Brothers;

Block notes that “touring the world for the past 20 years with a variety of bands has given me the opportunity to learn first hand how different countries sell and present new music to their people. I'm excited to have the opportunity to introduce great Hawaiian music to the UK, Europe, the Far East, South America and other areas that don't even realize Hawaiian music exists. A lot of kids here in the US don't even know about the Hawaiian music, culture, and history. This is by far the best record I have ever been a part of and look forward to more great albums to come.”

Producer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Cochrane adds, “This is the most natural, interesting and creative record I have had the opportunity to produce. The debut release of Major Hana Records is the culmination of my 20 year association with Jonathan Block and I look forward to making many more great records for the world to enjoy for years to come.”

Welcome, hana. But please, don't act like the Danny Couch lover who was here (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=4028) a while ago. That was one music fan who really put the "fan" in "fanatic". :rolleyes:

Most of the songs they play are written by all of them, as they each throw their own unique influences into the mix. They are also known for playing obscure cover songs by artists such as the Grateful Dead and Men At Work. not to niggle, but am I the only one who thinks of Judy Garland and freaking ~Kansas~ whenever that song is played, regardless of who remade it?

Interesting.
I think of Brudda IZ, myself. Maybe because I never much was a Judy Garland fan. I remember those Toys R Us commercials and some movie that song of his was used in. 50 First Dates?

Actually the Iz version of "Over the Rainbow" was used in the eToys online store commercials of the late 1990s.

...yep, as well as the song played in the credits for Meet Joe Black, and a few other opportunities.

Regardless, the song ain't a Hawaiian one, whether Israel did it or not.

Or maybe this is a good chance for us to discuss what DOES make a song Hawaiian™?

This band is blowing up!

Kanekoa, the amazing band from Maui, fronted by 2 electric ukuleles, is playing a special 'early LA show' at The Mint on Pico Blvd, on Thursday, June 15, from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

"Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Kaulana Kanekoa and ukulele ace, Vince Esquire, has been a hit on iTunes. 8 months after it's release, the song is now Number 30 on the US Folk Chart, Number 1 on the Canada Folk Chart and Number 5 on the Austrailia Folk Chart.

Look for this band to be featured in a the upcoming Farrelley Brothers production, "Billy The Great". Director/Producer Peter Farrelley raves, "Kanekoa was the best show I've seen in 15 years. I love them."

Kanekoa has been together for 10 years and is the only band in the world fronted by 2 electric ukuleles.

The boys recently played for the Trustees of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences on Maui.

Don't miss this rare LA performance!

So... how much did they have to pay for the stage time during this 'special early LA show' next month?

hana
June 17th, 2006, 05:25 PM
$0.00 - the same figure they are paying for their, Thursday July 13, 'Special Early Show" -- 6:00pm-8:00pm. You see Palolo, when the band is really good -- they don't 'pay to play'.

Sorry for you if you've had that experience -- but bands that pay clubs to play are simply perpetuating an age old problem, and yes, stupidity breeds morons -- and there are LOTS out there.

If you were lucky enough to catch the Kanekoa show -- you would have been blown away...

Look for exciting things to come from these guys VERY SOON.
