View Full Version : U2's Vertigo Tour Ending in Hawaii?

My friend sent me this link (http://www.u2tours.com/news/article.src?ID=1178) from the U2 Tours website:

File this under RUMOR for now, but by all accounts it seems true: The Vertigo Tour will come to an end in April when U2 plays Hawaii for the first time since 1985. We've had several emails in recent weeks from fans and sources saying they heard this from various members of U2's crew and staff, all the way up to the top. It's been discussed on radio in Hawaii. And it's most recently been mentioned by Carter Alan on WZLX radio in Boston, too.

RUMOR has it that the band continues to hold claims on several U.S. stadiums for shows next summer, but those dates will not be exercised ... Hawaii appears to be the end of the road.

For now file this one under "speculation".

According to the official U2 site, it's very possible they'll be here around that time as they're hitting NZ and Australia at the end of March, and like most bands that come here, play either there or Japan either going or coming back from those Pacific locations. They are schedule in Sydney on April 1. Even if they didn't bring their awesome stage show, I'm still going to this one. The band is still in prime form after all these years..........

U2 plays the stadium April 8, with an April 9 backup sellout date.

And Steve Miller Band plays Diamond Head Crater on April 1 (no joke).

Best "seats" are general admission. If you're lucky, you'll be one of the chosen few to go inside the hoop for the show.

I'll be camped and run like a bastard when the doors open.

This show is completely off the hook. Considering the amount of equipment involved, the ticket prices are actually pretty good.

pzarquon
January 13th, 2006, 06:28 AM
A few more details (http://starbulletin.com/2006/01/13/features/story06.html) from the Star-Bulletin. There'll be 15,000 "general admission" tickets at $49.50 to get on the field -- no seats, no bringing chairs. $165 gets you a seat in the lower blue and orange sections of the stadium, and $95 puts you in brown, red, and yellow (a.k.a. the "nosebleed section").

My inclination would be to agree that the field is probably the best bet, and definitely more like the concert experience I'd envision. I'm surprised it'll cost more, actually, to be further back in the stands.

Then again, I must be getting old, 'cause I can still see the appeal of having a reserved seat, versus camping out and running like a bastard as dick says.

cezanne
January 13th, 2006, 08:05 PM
Man that's why I hate concerts at Aloha Stadium. Even if you were sitting in the orange, it's still not close enough... and for that price? Probably gonna get General admission to get up close... but dang I ain't a kid anymore... I wanna sit down.

before you go to ebay... it seems some tickets were either added (it happens) or the totally SOLD OUT reports were premature. Including the one by yours truly. bottom line: www.Ticketmaster.com may still have some...

and ya never know, sometimes even more are released right before the show... for example, promoter 'holds' that are not needed after all, so might as well make them available.

anyway, better get back to work. :)

Don't know if you're familiar with eBay but it's an auction site so one cent is probably just a starting bid and not the actual selling price.

WooooooooooooooooH@!!!!!!

I'm fired up tonight! Booooyahakasha!

U2 did not sell out until 10pm (not 10am) on the day that tickets went on sale. . . . . .

I will say that I love U2. They rock. Not quite as much now as they used to, but they still can kick some arse.

I have bad news for the ladies, and good news for the dudes. Bono is short. Not only is he short, but he is hairy. And close up, he looks an awful lot like Robin Williams. So all short, hairy dudes who can pass for Robin Williams, unite. And tell the lovely ladies that you will follow!

I'm quite familiar with Ebay its just that a one cent starting bid is rather odd to me and doesnt sound very legit. I notice some people arent even bidding on the item.

Is there ticket brokers out there in Honolulu? I know when I was in Los Angeles visting and I wanted to go to Lakers games at the old LA Forum I would just look in the paper to see who was selling tickets and go to the actual ticket shop and buy the tickets. It was as simple as that.

The Advertiser reports that U2 may add a second show:

"We're very optimistic," Aloha Stadium Authority spokesman Patrick Leonard said yesterday of a second concert date. An announcement of a second concert, possibly on April 9, could come as early as tomorrow, he said.

Because TicketMasters is online anybody from anywhere can buy tickets for any event at any location. I suspect many speculators from out of state buying tickets and then re-selling on eBay. I bought my tickets from TicketMasters with the convenience of doing it from my computer rather than camping out at the stadium. The fees are a small price to pay for the convenience.

Totally. My theory is that you actually have a better chance getting the tix you want on the computer at home, than at the box office. Considering GA sold out in minutes, if you aren't first in line at the box office, the chance of you getting what you want there is pretty slim.

I'll be parked with four computers again when when the tix for the second show go on sale.

You are absolutely right. I had to wait 4 minutes for the GA tickets online but it's much quicker than waiting in line. If you waitied in line at the box office say 20 minutes before you get to the window, then you're out of luck because the GA tickets sold out in 10 minutes.

No you're not.

Perhaps you'd care to elaborate on and discuss the similarities of "Stories for Boys" and "Mofo?" Or perhaps "Trash, Trampoline and the Party Girl" and "The First Time (Soundtrack Version)?"

it's a matter of taste. the material dun speak to me. At first glance, it sounds all the same; tho the Edge is regarded as one of the top what.... 20 guitarists around, it sounds as tho he is repeating his riffs. and they don't seem to alter or deviate from a few mid level chords.
Bono's breathless singing, his posturing and overly political, cause oriented songs... the whole shootin match appears pretentious and self concious. Each song appears to be an echo of the last, with some changes.
But, at second, glance, well, it still leaves me cold. that's ok, tho. if EVERYone liked them as many do, yer tix prices would be thru the roof... even more.

Hmmm...I've liked them since I was around five years old. That was in the 80s. Does that make me the hipster that aged? Or am I considered someone who is aged but now wants to be hip? Or does that mean I was a hipster at age five who didn't know she was a hipster yet? What do you define as aged? I've always considered myself a nerd. Can there nerdy hipsters? Or am I a nerdy aged person who wants to be hip at the ripe ol' venerable age of 26? Sigh...gee, thanks. Now I'm questioning issues of mortality first thing in the morning and feel old. :p

This aging hipster or aged hip-wannabe U2 fan needs to go for her walk now before she's too old to move and needs a cane. You never know how much more I'll age before work later this morning, right? :D Maybe I'd better stock up on some pain meds while on my walk so that I remember before the Alzheimer's sets in and it's too late. That's the hipster thing to do, isn't it?

I was livin large in High School when U2 was GIGANTIC in the 80's....The War Album was it....and in college they just kept pumpin out the music and tours....Mysterious Ways....Wild Horses....Pride....Desire...Haven't Found What I'm Lookin For.....and so on

U2 is up there with Beatles, Elvis, Hendrix, Stones, Eagles, Doobie Bros, Who, Prince, Stevie Wonder, etc etc....I would say that U2 is easily in the top 20 of all time.

My daughter is almost 5. U2 is gettin old. I could have seen the Beatles or Elvis or Hendrix if my parents would have taken me. So I am takin my daughter to U2 because of the historical reasons. She already seen the Wailers (as in Bob Marley), and some of those dudes looked real old.

Music is one of the timekeepers on human society by which we measure and compare the passing of the generations. Joplin, Vaughn, Gillespie, Coltrane, Hooker, ..... Sinatra, Crosby, Martin, Mathis,.....Valens, Lewis, King,....Beatles, Elvis, Stones.....Eagles, Doobies, Black Sabbath....Cars, Talking Heads, U2, Madonna,.....Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Sugar Hill,....Snoop, Dre, Eminem,....it wont ever stop...and every generation will think what's ahead of them is noise, whats behind them is old fashioned, and what they like and listen to is the greatest music ever.

Lucky for me, I love all music.

My friend was telling me that the "young 'uns" consider 80s music to be in the "oldies" category. I always wondered when that would happen! I recall thinking that 70s music was RIGHT to be in the "oldies" category when I was living in the late 80s/early 90s, but I'm having a difficult time wrapping my mind around the fact that the 80s were really 20 + years ago--woo hoo, I like da "oldies!"

You might be right about aging hipsters, but you couldn't be more incorrect about it being because we think young people like them.

It's okay. You are probably young. You can be forgiven.

It is one thing to give the music an honest listen and dislike it (as with Kimo55), but another thing entirely to assume that there is something wrong with those who do.

You don't get it, and that's okay. You can be forgiven.

I will never. Ever. Forget when, on Monday, May 30, 1983 (I was fourteen), U2 played the US Festival. The band (as did others) simply rocked. During the extended jam on "Sunday Bloody Sunday" (a song protesting the revolution in Northern Ireland), Bono took the band's then-trademark white flag and climbed the scaffolding at the side of the stage. He must have gone up forty feet.

That was the day I got it. This is what rock and roll is supposed to be. I am too young to have heard Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction" when it was new, or Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changing" when it was new, but for a fourteen-year-old in 1983, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" was a song like that.

I know I am not the only one who reacted to this song (and others by the same band) this way. It was the idea that a rock song could try to move the world that did it for me. Rock and roll has always been about sex, but it is also about rebellion, and U2's rebelling against the rebellion is one of the most rebellious things EVER.

As you can see, there are people my age who have had meaningful experiences with U2 and its music. You are free to dislike the music any way you wish, but to accuse us "aging hipsters" of bandwagon-jumping is only ignorant.

---

Edited to add:
Another thing to remember about U2's performance that night was that it was followed immedately by Missing Persons and Dale Bozzio's plexiglass bra. Holy moly.

Also, the US Festivals were sponsored by Steve Wozniak. How cool is that?

My sis called me last night to say that she had picked up some U2 tickets that just got released. Sure enough...checked Ticketmaster tonight, and there are both reserved and general admission tickets for sale. Wonder if they finally tracked down the people that bought more than 4 per household and are putting their tickets back up for sale? (Since I had read that U2's policy is no more than 4 per household and we all know how a lot of mainland ticket scammers pick up a bunch to sell for big bucks). Anyway...guess I'll be going in the General Admission section. :D
